May is Hunger Awareness Month How Hunger Affects Us

• Hunger hinders our ability to focus and study. Children who experience hunger early on are more likely to perform poorly academically, repeat a grade and/or require special assistance while in school.

• From birth, irreversible brain damage can be caused because of iodine deficiency in the mother. Iodine deficiency is easily preventable and affects around 1.9 billion people worldwide. • Hunger results in a lower IQ and less developed brain matter than well-nourished children.

• Hunger and stress affect the functioning of the brain that determines decision making.

• Studies from the American Psychological Association reveal the psychological effects of hunger on education. Hunger has been observed to cause depression, anxiety and withdrawal, all of which are obstructions to a child trying to focus on education. • Hunger can also cause behavioral problems. In a classroom setting, a single child’s behavior can affect the rest of the students, the teacher’s attention and the overall learning atmosphere. In this case, hunger not only disturbs the affected child’s learning, but the learning of others as well.

Stephen C. WESTIN AGE 71 – OTSEGO, MI

Steve was born in San Diego, California on March 18, 1944. At age 4 he moved with his grandparents to Freeport, Minnesota where he resided until age 14. Freeport is a rural farming community and this is where Steve began his love for the soil and all things connected to the Earth. One of his favorite pastimes was walking through the ﬁelds in the spring collecting rocks and keeping the interesting ones to add to his collection. Steve was introduced to the fascinating world of astronomy by his neighbor who owned a telescope and loved sharing the mysteries of the universe with everyone. Steve's grade school training was at Sacred Heart and thanks to the Benedictine Nuns and under the guidance of a kind Benedictine Priest, Father Lionus, he learned the value of living a moral and ethical life and those same values have directed him throughout his life. Steve joined the Army and was trained in Helicopter Mechanics. He obtained the rank of SP5 and also served as a Flight Operations Specialist. While in Vietnam Steve visited the Buddhist monastery often, he was curious and wanted to learn more about the culture. Steve resided in Otsego, Michigan with his wife Mare` and grown children, spouses and grandchildren. Steve dedicated his life to these sciences and continued to develop and share his knowledge with others. He had been very busy teaching, lecturing, and working with people of all walks of life. Steve lectured on many types of sciences and taught them purely with respect to each “Master” in their particular ﬁeld. It is in the development and practical implementation that Steve used the term “the harmonious development of art and sciences” in which he combined his knowledge of all the sciences and intertwined them to create a harmonious environment. Steve is survived by his wife, Mare (Wangerin) Westin; daughters, Brenda Conrad and Amanda (Conrad) Banas and her husband Anthony Banas; grandchildren, Zachary Conrad, Mackenzie Banas, Samantha Banas, and Meagan (Banas) Wolters and her husband Nick Wolters; great-granddaughter, Paige West; as well as close family friend thought of as a daughter, Debra Keeley and her Husband Glen Keeley along with their children Ryan and Jordan Keeley. Steve is preceded in death by his father, “Big “Chuck; his mother, Joan and a brother, Terry. Stevie will be missed dearly by all that knew him and the knowledge that we will now have to work for. A private family burial will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. With Military Honors by VFW Post #3030, Otsego. A celebration to honor Steve’s life will be held later this summer. Leonora ‘Lee’ A. OPPERMAN AGE 80 – OTSEGO, MI

Leonora passed away Saturday, May 9, 2015 in Kalamazoo. Lee was born December 25, 1934 in Kalamazoo to Eric and Esther (Roekle) Puschel. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1952 and Bronson School of Nursing in 1955. Lee worked at the Kalamazoo County Health Dept. for over 30 years and was a long time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego. In her leisure time she enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pinochle, knitting, crocheting and being ‘Grandma’ to so many. On April 17, 1971 she married Kenneth Opperman who preceded her in 2006. Surviving are her sisters, Phyllis Curtis of Plainwell and Amalia (Ronald) Stelljes of Round Rock, TX; a brother, Paul (Jeanette) Puschel of Kalamazoo; and a sister-in-law, Bette Puschel of Northport, MI; numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband; a brother, Mendel Puschel; a sister, Vera VanLoo and brother-in-law, William Curtis. A Funeral Service was held Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at the Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego with Pastor Josh Olson officiating. Burial took place at West Cooper Cemetery. Mildred passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015 at her home in Trowbridge Township. She was born May 31, 1931 in Allegan the daughter of DeForest and Marion (Schuler) Myers. For many years she owned and operated Millie’s Aloha Restaurant until her retirement in October 1993. In her spare time Mildred enjoyed gardening, sewing, scrapbooking to make cards, and all kinds of crafts from left over sewing projects. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. On December 18, 1948 at the Otsego Baptist Church she married Floyd Beldon who passed away in 1980. Surviving are her children, Joann (James) Lumbard, Jean (Don) Thompson, Judy (Dale) Thompson and Joy (Kenneth) Darby; 10 grandchildren, Kim Milbocker, James Lumbard II, Ryan Thompson, Ike Thompson, Sy Thompson, Jason, Anthony and Jonathan Beldon, Kathleen Emmons and Haley Emmons and by her 8 great-grandchildren, Dakota Milbocker, Jessica Lumbard, McKenzie Thompson, Ava Jo Thompson, Dade Beldon, Noah Beldon, Natalie Beldon and Andrew Beldon. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; son, Thomas Beldon in 2003; her infant daughter, Jill; and by her infant granddaughter, Jody. A Funeral service was held Wednesday, May 13, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor James Davis officiating. Honors by VFW Post #3030 Ladies Auxiliary.
