The Otsego Area Historical Museum had a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Saturday, May 15, 2021 to celebrate their purchase of the museum building from the Otsego DDA. The building was built back in 1907 and previously had been Otsego's Waterworks building. The DDA remodeled and restored the building. It was a perfect fit for the citizens looking for a place to preserve the City's history and artifacts. The Otsego Area Historical Museum opened in September 2004. Citizens are invited to donate historical items to the Otsego Museum knowing they will be properly cared for and often used in displays for the public. The Otsego Museum is open on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. Keep an eye out for upcoming presentations and displays or just drop in on a Saturday to take a step back into history. 218 N. Farmer St. There has been great progress on the riverfront pavilion project with work on the roof nearly complete. Planning continues on our next phase of riverfront development. In addition to our projects we have also begun our spring beautification events including a spring cleanup of downtown and hanging our flower baskets!

The Community Engagement Team is preparing for the return of a number of annual events such as Gus Macker as well as planning a ribbon cutting ceremony in June to celebrate the completion of the riverfront pavilion. Other projects include a community mural and other downtown art projects, and we encourage any artists or others interested in supporting public art in Otsego to reach out and get involved! Finally, we will be partnering with the Otsego District Public Library to bring families downtown as part of their summer reading program during the month of July.

FLOWER BED Every year we make our downtown flower beds available for adoption by families and organizations interested in lending a helping hand! Flowers are provided by Otsego Main Street and made available for pick up. After planting the bed, we encourage everyone to maintain their bed by visiting approximately once a month to weed. We still have a number of beds available, reach out to the Main Street Manager for more information. Have some extra flowers in your garden? We are also accepting donations of flowers for our downtown beds!

TeenServe coming this summer to Plainwell, Mi! TeenServe has organized 57 work camps in 42 locations where over 13,000 participants have completed work on more than 2,422 homes. Workcamps have been held in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Plainwell TeenServe 2021 is coming to our community this summer. This summer, teens from all over the country will be staying at Plainwell High School to help repair homes in our community. It is not too late to apply for FREE house painting, wheelchair ramps, and other minor home repairs. Call 1-800-596-3498 to apply today! Residents will be selected based on physical and financial needs. TeenServe is still looking for volunteers to help during the week of June 27th - July 3rd, 2021. Princess is having a very hard time at the animal shelter, she is not holding up well and needs to get into a foster or forever home ASAP. At this time she is exhibiting signs of anxiety so this is an urgent need to get her out of the shelter environment. Princess is just one year old, weighs 69 pounds, and she is friendly and playful. She is still a pup and may jump up looking for attention, but she does listen pretty well and will sit when asked. She would do best in a home where someone can be home to work with her, let her decompress and settle into a routine. Princess will need to be the only pet in the home and any children in the home should be teenagers. Experience with Dobermans is preferred but not required. If you can offer Princess a safe, loving home (either foster or forever) please fill out an online application at wishbonepetrescue.org. Bret SUNNERVILLE
Bob passed away Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo. He was born February 12, 1938 in Paw Paw, the son of Tony and Helen (Reits) Pionke. Bob graduated from State High School in 1956. During his high school career he proved to be a top athlete. Bob was on the varsity football team for 4 years, AllState 2 years and served as captain of the team; the varsity basketball team for 3 years and set a school scoring record during the State Quarter Final game; the varsity baseball team for 4 years, the top hitter in Kalamazoo for 2 years and received All Southwestern Michigan honors; the varsity track team for 4 years and was on the 2nd place 880 relay team at the State Meet. He also played Legion Baseball for Kalamazoo during the summer and was recruited for a try-out with the Detroit Tigers. Bob earned 15 varsity letters and was on Kalamazoo All-City Teams in football, basketball and baseball. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Kalamazoo College where he continued to excel in sports, earning 8 varsity letters in baseball, golf and football and was a co-captain of the football team his senior year and his Master’s Degree from Western Michigan University. Following his graduation Bob taught at Lincoln Jr. High in Kalamazoo then at Kalamazoo University High for a year before beginning his 34 year career at Otsego Public Schools. He taught Social Studies and Math in junior high and coached junior high and J.V. basketball, high school football and baseball. His coaching achievements included an undefeated baseball season with 22 consecutive wins and a football conference championship. He then served as Athletic Director and Assistant Principal of the High School and Middle School. Bob retired in 1995. He loved playing in golf leagues recording 2 holes-in-one and a double eagle. Bob and Roberta spent winters in Florida and loved to meet with their son, Jeff, and his family. Other favorite activities included watching birds, playing Bridge and Solitaire, computer video games, walking, going out to dinner, lunch or breakfast with friends. He and Roberta went on several cruises [Alaska, Hawaii, Bermuda, and Paris/Normandy] and he loved to travel, including a recent trek to Italy. He continued to follow sports on TV including professional and college football, March Madness, and cheering for U of M and the Tigers and Lions. Bob had been a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge #1711 and the Retired Teachers. On June 29, 1969 at the First Methodist Church in Kalamazoo he married the love of his life, Roberta L. Baker, who survives. Also surviving are son, Jeff (Heather) Miles of CT; 3 grandchildren, Cameron, Andrew and Haley Miles; his sister Mary Ann Eaton of Portage; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Georgia Royce; and brothers-in-law, Jack Wooden, Bill Royce and Jay Eaton. Graveside services were held on May 20th at Mount Ever-Rest South in Kalamazoo at 11am. Contributions in memory of Bob may be made to Otsego Public Schools (OPS) Foundation.
Marcia passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 at Allegan County Medical Care Community. She was born December 12, 1940 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Clarence and A. Elizabeth (Clark) Scheidt. Marcia grew up in Richland, Kalamazoo and Portage and moved to Otsego in 2002. She was an LPN at Borgess Hospital, factory worker at Production Plated Plastics in Richland and had various other jobs in and around the Kalamazoo area. Marcia enjoyed volunteering and was the first recipient of Community Mental Health Services to serve on the Kalamazoo County Human Services Board. She was the Consumer Advocate for mentally and physically challenged adults and served on many committees and task forces. She also volunteered for the Red Cross and Michigan Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Center for Independent Living and various other organizations in the Kalamazoo area. In her free time Marcia had made many wall hangings for her family and enjoyed crafting, caring for plants and working in her garden. She loved reading all kinds of books and listening to a variety of music. She was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego. Surviving are her brothers, Jim Scheidt of Shelbyville and John (Bonnie Kay) Scheidt of Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM., Monday, May 24, 2021 at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, with a Rosary starting at 10:30 AM., with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery in Richland. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Marcia may be made to the family to help purchase a grave marker or to Hospice of Holland. Bret passed away Monday, May 10, 2021 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born June 1, 1964 in Plainwell, the son of Ernest and Jerrilyn (Pell) Sunnerville. Bret was raised on the family dairy farm where he loved to ride horses and had a special bond with every dog he ever owned. He graduated from Martin High School in 1982 and built his family home around the corner from the farm. Bret was a lifelong learner and had attended Moody Bible Institute, Hope College and Calvin Seminary. He enjoyed reading, working out, gardening, teaching theology and loved to talk about politics and current events. He was intelligent, had a wonderful sense of humor and was full of fun. Most of all Bret was proud of his children, loved his family and his Lord. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego. On December 10, 1993 in Grand Rapids he married Paula Brunink who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jack who is serving in the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan, Sam and Chloe both of Martin; his parents; siblings, Laura (Jose) Martinez of East Leroy and Sue (Tracy) McConnell of Lawrence along with several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 21, 2021 at St. Margaret Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Burial will follow at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery in Otsego. Contributions in memory of Bret may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project. Neola Marie MARTIN AGE 84 - MARTIN, MI
Neola Marie Martin (Trumbull) of Martin, MI, passed away in the comfort of her home Tuesday evening, May 18, 2021 while surrounded by her family. She was born February 4, 1937, in Calhoun county, a daughter of the late Max and Dora (Horan) Trumbull. She married the love of her life, James Martin under the beautiful summer sun on July 28, 1953. Neola was a homemaker and helped at the school up until her 4 children were teenagers then worked at Johnson Sandwich Company. In 1989, Jim and Neola embarked on the adventure of entrepreneurship and opened Martin Tire where she managed the bookkeeping and scheduling. Neola was always involved with everything her children were in. She was a band parent, participated in athletic boosters, and would run the concession stand for home basketball games. She enjoyed golf, dancing, painting, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was always the first to ask to hold the baby and absolutely adored having little ones around. Watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren was never a chore and she always said, “If I’m going to have one, I’ll take them all.” This idea flowed through to whenever family needed help, we help each other and there was always food and drinks for the hard workers. In her early retirement years, Jim and Neola turned into “snow bunnies” and would spend half of the year in the Sunshine state of Florida. There they would golf the days away and spend the evenings swapping stories with their siblings. Neola was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Josh Trumbull and Larry Hutchins, and sister Delores Smith. Neola is survived by her adoring husband of 67 years, James Martin; sisters, Paula Kay and Linda Lou; her four children, Rick (Lori) Martin, Deborah (Daniel) Boniface, Randy (Christine) Martin, and Donovan (Cindy) Martin all of Allegan county; several grandchildren; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many other family members and friends who miss her feisty and stubborn spirit. A celebration of life service will be held at Martin United Methodist Church on Saturday May 22nd at 11:00am with a luncheon to follow. The family expresses appreciation and memorial contributions may be made to the Wings of Hope Hospice of Allegan. Nathaniel Lee CHAPMAN AGE 81 - KALAMAZOO, MI
Nathaniel of Cooper Township, Kalamazoo, MI passed away on Friday, May 14, 2021 at the age of 81. Nathaniel was born on March 7, 1940 in Kalamazoo, MI and was the son of Nathaniel E. and Edrie M. (Stainbrook) Chapman. As a young boy he sang for a Lutheran church in Kalamazoo. He graduated from Plainwell High School with the Class of 1958. After high school he enlisted into the United States Army and served his country for three years. On September 3, 1966 he married the love of his life, Carolyn Adams. And together they had two children: Nathaniel “Gordon” and Kelly Anne. He enjoyed bowling, roller-skating and line dancing. He and his wife were members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA). They enjoyed traveling by motorhome as well. He retired from Mejiers as a I&C Technician with over 30 years of service. His family will remember him as fun loving, great sense of humor and very social. Nathaniel is survived by his son Nathaniel “Gordon” Chapman, of Stevensville; daughter: Kelly Anne Chapman, of FL; four grandchildren: Nathaniel David Chapman, Matthew Chapman, Ailya Shapiro and Dakota Shapiro. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Chapman; his parents: Nathaniel and Edrie Chapman; mother and father-in-law: Gordon and Imogene Adams. A graveside burial of his ashes will be held at West Cooper Cemetery on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 12noon with military honors. A Memorial Gathering open house will be held on Saturday from 2pm to 5pm at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, Marshall-Gren Chapel.
