Through our communities’ giving spirit, the Postal Employees collected 11,440 pounds of food for our local food pantry and helping agency, “Christian Neighbors,” which serves those in need locally. Special thanks to Bud Berry, Postmaster Fred Torres of the Plainwell Post Office and Julie Wheeler and Postmaster Anne Kyes-Hill of the Otsego Post Office for organizing and helping with the event. Thank you to all of the adult and youth volunteers who helped that day to make it possible. We appreciate Pizza Hut for pizza donations and Upper Crust for announcing this event on their sign. Lastly, thank you to each one of you who donated food to this effort!! You truly helped to stock our bare shelves.

Hunger Myths vs. Realities

Myth: Only homeless, jobless people need emergency food. Reality: Food banks and emergency food providers continue to serve more working poor families than ever. 50% of the folks that receive food from emergency food providers are children and seniors. 43% of the folks we serve are employed.

Myth: Food Stamps are intended to supply a family with all the food they need every month. Reality: The food stamp program is a supplemental program. Food stamps cannot be used for soap, diapers, and paper products. Furthermore, on average food stamps only last families 2.6 weeks out of 4, per month.

Myth: Hunger is only a big city problem. Reality: Hunger strikes people in rural, suburban and urban communities. Hunger is about poverty too. 40% of Michigan’s hungry people live in rural or suburban areas.

Myth: We can’t have a hunger problem at the same time we have an obesity problem in the U.S. Reality: Hunger is not about calories; it is about securing an acceptable, healthy, safe food supply for a family and knowing it is there day after day. The causes of obesity are separate. Sadly, the least expensive foods are often low in nutrition and high in calories.

Myth: Hunger is not a problem for senior citizens because they are wealthier than ever. Reality: Many seniors still struggle on a fixed income. Medical expenses frequently use up a large chunk of available cash.

Myth: There are so many public programs for getting help with food...no one could be hungry. Government is taking care of the hunger problem. Reality: Cumbersome application processes, transportation and confusion about eligibility often hinder participation in the public programs. People with food shortages are turning to the non-profit, charity network (like Christian Neighbors) when they need help. www.fbcmich.org

Penny L. (Young) GOODACRE AGE 62 – OTSEGO, MI

Penny went to be with her Lord and Savior suddenly on May 13, 2015. Penny was born August 29, 1954 in Kalamazoo; the daughter of Donald and Georgia Young. A 1972 graduate of Otsego High School, Penny enjoyed reading mystery novels, had a passion for sewing, working crossword puzzles and gardening. She loved her first winter in Florida riding bikes and walking along the beach with the love of her life. On October 4, 1975, Penny married her high-school sweetheart Robert Goodacre who survives. Penny is also survived by her daughters Vanessa (Steve) Sawyer and Nicole (John) Wagner, her mother Georgia Young, her sisters and brother Susan Keyzer, Nancy Corradini, Theresa Summers, Ronald (Ruth) Young, Amy (Brian) Tetreault-Blok, 3 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Penny was reunited with her loving father Donald, mother-in-law Phyllis, father-inlaw Robert Sr., and brothers-in-law Gary Keyzer, Sonny Fairfield, Dennis Corradini, John Summers and Shawn Tetreault, who preceded her in death. Penny was a kindhearted, passionate, loving wife and mother who always put her family first. Her loved ones fondly remember celebrating many holidays in her home, her meticulously hand-crafted baby clothes, and the unconditional love for her mother amongst many others. A memorial service was held Sunday, May 17th at the Otsego Moose Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations may be accepted at the Otsego Moose Lodge 345 or VFW Post 3030, Otsego, MI. Curt passed away May 18, 2015. He was born March 15, 1934 in Hindman, KY, the son of Lee and Julie (Messer) Conley. A retired employee of several paper mills in the Kalamazoo area, Curt spent his retirement years, working for Riley Farms and Stan Leep Farms. A "jack of all trades", Curt always kept busy; and he enjoyed upholstery, especially car seats and furniture. Curt also loved hunting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. On January 1, 1993, Curt married the former Malvia Dyer who survives. Curt is also survived by a daughter: Colleen (Jeff) Honacker, step children: Robin Waite and James Whittaker, brothers: Billy Rae Conley and Bob (Vicky) Conley, a grandson: Michael, and several nieces and nephews. Curt was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Aileen Dyson, Marie Creech, and Bonnie Gordon. Funeral Services were held Thursday, May 21, 2015. Pastors Mike Risner and Rich Sheldon, officiated. Burial took place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Orangeville. Memorial contributions to Wings of Hope Hospice will be appreciated.
