With the paper business booming in Otsego, mill owner George Bardeen built his second plant in Otsego in 1891 on the west side of Farmer Street, immediately south of the Kalamazoo River. It made specialty papers and employed over 100 people. It was shut down during the Depression and was torn down in 1935.

- OBITUARIES – Verna M. LOUALLEN AGE 79 – OTSEGO, MI

passed away Verna Monday, May 19, 2014, at her home. Verna was born February 14, 1935, in Pullman to Robert and Irene (Finn) Burrows. She had been a member of Bitely Community Church for many years. As a young girl she had helped at the Fly Inn Restaurant in Plainwell and then was employed with Plainwell Sanitarium from the age of 17 until it closed. Following her work there, she worked at Golden Pizza, also worked in the psychiatric ward at Borgess Hospital in the early 70s and ended her career working on her farm in Otsego. Surviving are her daughter, Brenda Dunklee of Otsego; four grandsons, Richard (Jamie) Dunklee, Matthew (Jammie) Dunklee, Nathan (Jamie) Dunklee and Timothy Dunklee, all of Otsego; nine greatgrandchildren; her siblings, Robert (Carol) Burrows of AZ, Richard Seekman of AZ, Stanley Seekman of Otsego, Mary Ann Schiero of Otsego, Karen (Jack) Campbell of Kalamazoo; a sister-in-law, Carol Seekman of Otsego; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Earl Seekman; an infant son, Walter Earl Louallen; her first husband, Bart Louallen; sister, Lorna Pirrone; brothers, Rusty Seekman and Daniel Seekman; brother-in-law, Joseph Pirrone; sister-inlaw, Rene Seekman and her son-in-law, Vern Dunklee. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 21, 2014. Wings of Hope Chaplain, Greg Carlson, officiated. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell will take place later. Contributions in memory of Verna may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice. Gil passed away May 17, 2014 at his home. Gil served his country proudly in the Navy Reserves for 10 years. He also served on the Martin Fire Dept. for 52 years with 17 years as Chief. His family includes his wife of 62 years, Dona; his children: Mark (Doreen) Gilson, Tanya (Tim) Griffioen, Jodie (Sherri) Gilson; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings Margaret and Carl as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Margie and Judy. Jackie Diane LAKIE AGE 66 – PLAINWELL, MI

Jackie passed away at Borgess Medical Center on May 10, 2014 with her family by her side. Jackie, the only daughter of 3 children, was born May 30, 1947 to Evelyn and James Babbitt. Jackie married David Lakie Jr., her first and only love, on June 11, 1965. She worked as a cosmetologist until she and her husband became general managers for Ideal Roller Rink in Plainwell, MI. Also during this time she and David started a Towing Service. Years later, they moved into their long time home on Miller Road where they continued their successful business called Dave’s Towing Service. They owned and operated this business together for almost 40 years. Jackie spent a lot of her time with her mother Evelyn. They did everything together and were nearly inseparable. Jackie enjoyed listening & singing along to oldies music from the 40’s 50’s & 60’s. She was an amazing cook & never disappointed around the holidays with her homemade treats. She also enjoyed shopping, mini vacations, roller skating and bowling. She was on a bowling league for many years where she met many of her lifelong friends. Jackie and Dave also enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. Jackie was held dearly in the hearts of many people, especially her nieces and nephews. She had a very special bond with the children of her siblings. “Aunt Jackie” was a name given to her by not only her family but by the many people she helped in her life. She was the woman who made sure that her family stayed in contact by organizing birthday and holiday parties. Jackie will be missed by many but never forgotten. Her memories will be held close by her friends and family. Jackie is preceded in death by her father James Babbitt, mother Evelyn Babbitt and brother Dennis Babbitt. She is survived by her husband David Lakie Jr., son David John Babbitt, grandchildren Chelsea and Jacob and brother Creg (Diane) Babbitt.
