COMMITTEE NEWS

Organization

The Organization Committee wants our community volunteers to know they are greatly appreciated. So, one of our team’s new plans is a “Welcome Volunteer” bag that will be handed out to all new volunteers when they checkin to help at an event. The bag will include volunteer information and some cool Otsego Main Street swag. We have also created an email account called Community Mailer Otsego Main Street, that we have been using to “blast” emails out to our community volunteers with valuable information about things happening in Otsego. If you wish to be added to the email list, please contact the Main Street office. Another important role of the Organization Committee is fundraising and we are pleased to announce the formation of a sub-committee to work on Fund Development. This group will work on ideas for creating major funding for future big projects to help make our downtown a charming and inviting place for all ages. The Organization Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month, 4:15pm at City Hall, please feel free to stop by and check us out….we’d love to have new members.

Economic Vitalization

The Economic Vitality Committee is working to bring new businesses to downtown Otsego. This starts with a detailed database of all business space in the downtown which can be utilized to help prospective businesses find the best property for their needs. In addition, this committee is responsible for the new signs you will see appearing in the windows of available properties. The first of these can be seen in the building which previously housed Flower GalleRe’ and more are on the way. Finally, the Economic Vitality Committee is looking to actively recruit new businesses with unique products and services which would draw shoppers to our downtown. The committee will be using the market study completed thru a state grant in 2015 for inspiration on businesses our residents would like to see open. However we continue to value the feedback of our residents, if you have ideas for a particular available property in the downtown we would love to hear from you. For those interested in learning more about this committee please feel free to join us as we meet the second Monday of each month at 6:15 pm in the Main Street Office within the Otsego Historical Museum.

Promotions

The job of the Promotion Committee is to PROMOTE downtown as the center of commerce, culture, & community life for residents & visitors alike. Kicking off this year was the Pirate Poker Crawl hosted in April 2017. This event gained the highest number in tickets sales to date compared to other Poker Crawls hosted by Main Street. We started off the year with a bang and hope to continue to do so with other upcoming events. The Main Street office is currently accepting applications for a new event called the Pet Mayoral Election. Details for this event can be found on the Otsego Main Street Facebook page and at www.otsegomainstreet.org. Applications are being accepted through June 1st. Also, coming soon is Flip Flop Friday on Friday June 23rd, 5-8 pm. Details for this event can also be found on the Main Street Facebook page and in the Community Shoppers Guide. If you are interested in becoming a vendor for this event, contact the Main Street office by email or call Otsego City Hall. If you are interested in becoming a member or volunteer for the promotions committee, we typically meet the first Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. at the Otsego Historical Museum. Feel free to stop by if you would like to participate or to learn more about what we do. Our next scheduled meeting is Monday, June 12, 2017.

The Design Committee works to develop plans to make Otsego look great. We always welcome your ideas for our city! The riverfront development is moving forward. The Art Garden has new art, be sure to check it out! It’s located between Judy’s Restaurant and Otsego Barber Shop. Adopt a flower bed! The flowers are here! There are a few flower beds that have not been adopted this year. Volunteers are needed to adopt and care for a flower bed. We provide the flowers and watering, you plant and weed the beds over the growing season. Please contact City Hall if your are interested at 269-692-3391. Coming soon! On Memorial Day crowds will gather, bands will play, veterans will march, flags will waive, dignitaries will speak and taps will be played in what has become a solemn remembrance of those who fought and died for freedom. We are grateful to all who have served our country. Whether in a National Cemetery, a large city, small hamlet, or in a small country cemetery, the message will be the same … Honor … Duty … Courage … Valor … Love … Sacrifice.

On November l9, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln unknowingly created a memory that would become a National observance soon after his death. Lincoln was asked to speak at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. While the Union Army had recently defeated the Southern forces in the Battle of Gettysburg, a place had been provided so the bodies of those who perished during the war could be properly laid to rest. In his wisdom, Lincoln recognized the sacrifices made by the Union soldiers. They would be for naught if the living did not rededicate themselves to the cause of freedom. In one of America’s bestknown speeches, President Lincoln said in part:

“ ... It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” (Gettysburg Address)

There is only one thing worse than death and that is not remembering. As we honor the memory of all Americans who died in service to our country, let us be reminded that memory is a gift of God. Let us use it well.

Prayer: God of peace, one day wars will cease and you will be crowned Lord of all. We thank you for this comforting promise. Amen.

AGE 82 – OTSEGO, MI Mary Ann passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 in Kalamazoo. She was born January 18, 1935 in Owensboro, Kentucky the daughter of Anson and Velma (Gossmer) Reed. She enjoyed spending time in her yard and decorating her home, loved to travel, shop and enjoyed spending time on the water. She was a strong woman who raised four children on her own. She loved to dance and enjoyed listening to bands at the bowling alley in the 60’s. She also enjoyed playing the piano. Mary Ann always made time for her family; she was ready to load up a car full of kids for a trip to the lake at a moment’s notice. Her kids are sure they have visited every stretch of beach along Lake Michigan’s shoreline. They also remember her reluctance to wear a suit because of what she called her “chicken legs”. On February 6, 1988 in Plainwell she married Robert Wood who preceded her in death in 2015. Surviving are her children, Deborah Hodgemire of Plainwell, James (Donna Hunter) Peck of Lawton, Douglas (Sandy Hall) Peck of Shelbyville and Gary (Sue) Peck of Otsego; step children, Lynne (Joel) Cook and Jeffrey Wood of Gobles; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her son-in-law, Keith and her sister, Ellyn Wood. Friends may meet with Mary Ann’s family Friday, May 26, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Cremation will follow. A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday, May 28, 2017 beginning at 4:00 P.M. at the home of Deborah Hodgemire, 11045 Gilkey Rd., Plainwell. Burial of ashes will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell at a later time. Obituaries William ‘Bill’ GROTH AGE 75 – MARTIN, MI

William passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 in Allegan. Bill was born August 9, 1941 in Hartford, MI the son of Henry A. and Cecile (Hilderley) Groth. Bill drove a feed truck for Wolverine Feed for 12 years before going to work at Plainwell Paper where he worked for over 23 years until they closed. In his spare time, he enjoyed cutting wood, gardening, fixing mowers and tinkering in the garage. On March 16, 1963, he married Kathleen Myers who survives. Also surviving are his children, Michael (Sharon) Groth of Gobles and Michelle (Daniel) Wubben of Dorr; 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may meet with Bill’s family from 10-11 A.M. Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Trowbridge United Methodist Church, 355 – 26th Street, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor John Moore officiating. Kathleen L. “Kathy” MISNER AGE 68 – OTSEGO, MI

Kathy passed away Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born October 11, 1948 in Plainwell the daughter of Lyle and Helen (Wilkins) Barton. Kathy was a lifelong resident of the area and enjoyed serving the community. For 26 years she had served as an Otsego City Commissioner. She had been part of the Otsego Main Street and Downtown Development Committee, had helped to design, raise funds for and maintain the Otsego Veterans Memorial at Memorial Park and was an active supporter of Sylvia’s Place for over 20 years. Kathy had owned and operated Decorators Plus for 27 years, opening in Plainwell and later moving into Otsego, until her retirement in 2007. She then went on to work at Bob’s Hardware in the paint department. On May 8, 1999 in Plainwell she married James Misner who survives. Also surviving are her children, Adam Strong of Otsego, Brian (Jill) Misner of Plainwell, Shawn (Shawn) Kolhoff of Plainwell, Neil (Amy) Misner of CO and Amy (Brian) Dole of Shelbyville; 14 grandchildren; brother, Marc (Rhonda) Barton of Otsego; many extended family members including special cousins and aunts and her dog, Sophie. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services were held May 25, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church. Pastor Joe Shaler officiated. Cremation took place. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery at a later time. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Kathy may be made to the Otsego Main Street for the downtown mural. AGE 96 – PLAINWELL, MI Leon passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2017 in his Plainwell home. Leon was born on April 6, 1921. He graduated from Plainwell High School with the class of 1940. About this time, he attended a local festival where he met the love of his life, her name was Juanita Weaver. After graduation, he enrolled in the Army, and it was not long after meeting Juanita that he was called off to war. Leon came home on furlough, and on September 14, 1945, wedding bells rang at the Congregational Church in Otsego. They welcomed two children into their lives, Susan and Sally. He and Juanita were very loving parents, and the family celebrated many happy times together. To help support his family, Leon worked as a lineman for Michigan Bell for over 40 years! He was the president of the Plainwell Chamber of Commerce, served on the City of Plainwell Council, and was also a member of Michigan Jaycees. Leon was never a person to talk about someone in a negative way, so it was ﬁtting for him to serve in these community positions. He is survived by his two daughters: Susan (Hassan) Kaakani, of MN and Sally (Steve) Laws, of Otsego; one granddaughter: Ashley Oglesbee, of GA; adopted son: Shaun (Alan) Frederick, of NC; sister: Shirley Van Buskirk, of Portage; brother-inlaw: Bob Arehart, of Plainwell; sister-in-law: Joyce Rex, of Otsego. He is preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; siblings: Al Kenyon, Eva June Arehart, and Marshall Kenyon. The funeral has already taken place. Funeral services were held, May 10, 2017 at Life Story Funeral Home - Plainwell A special thanks to Stacie Sutherland, our family's caregiver, who is more of a member of the family.
