Imagine a political campaign without mudslinging words! Oh, the power of words. Words can heal or words can hurt. Words can bring peace or cause war. Words can build up or tear down. The right words can bring harmony; wrong words can stir up conflict. A four year old boy was talking about his younger sister and said, “She has her teeth, but her words haven’t come in yet.” A part of growing up is getting the right words in and the right words out. In Proverbs 16:24 we read, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). Here are some examples of right words:

Joseph MARIO

AGE 96 – TAVARES, FL (Formerly of Otsego and Pine Lake) Joseph passed away Friday, January 15, 2016 at his home in Florida. He was born October 31, 1919 in Otsego to Samuel and Frances (Congemi) Mario. Joseph was a 1938 Otsego High School graduate and Molar Barber School in Chicago, IL. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II. For many years he owned and operated the Otsego Barber Shop. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and his home on Pine Lake. On June 28, 1941 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Allegan, MI, he married Alberta Bishop who passed away on November 25, 2015. Surviving are his two children, Andrea (Thomas) Cassidy and Joseph Michael (Penny) Mario; 4 grandchildren, Andrea (Shay) Adkins, Robert (Bonny) Mario , Tim Mario and Joey Mario; 6 greatgrandchildren, Amanda and April Mario, Alyssa Mario, Gracie and Joe Mario and Mike (Melissa) Burke; sister-in-law, Linda Mario and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 74 years, Alberta; his parents; four brothers, Sam, John, Tony and Frank and by his sister, Catherine. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego, with Rev. Fr. Donald Klingler officiating. Burial of ashes will follow at St. Margaret Cemetery, Otsego. Jack HOLMES

AGE 77 – OTSEGO, MI Jack passed away Friday, June 3, 2016 at the Wings Home in Allegan. He was born April 18, 1939 in Otsego the son of Clifton and Laura (Root) Holmes. Jack served his country in the United States Navy. He was a lifelong resident of the area and had worked at Gibson Guitar, Kal-Equip, GenTex, Donnelly Corporation, Allen Test Products and had retired from Preferred Plastics. After his retirement he drove cars for Harold Zeigler Ford. In his spare time Jack enjoyed playing music, fishing, golfing, shooting pool, spending time with his family and friends and mowing the yard on his riding mower. He was a life member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. On June 25, 1977 he married Linda Edson who survives. Also surviving are his children, Dan (Sherri Kuiper) Holmes of Plainwell, Deb (Keith) Todd of Otsego, Denise (Bob) Golm of Byron Center, Darlene (Bob) Enos of Otsego, Jackie (Marvin) Fox of Plainwell, David (Kathie) Holmes of Wayland and Angela (Fred Oaks) Holmes of Kalamazoo; 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, LeRoy, brothers, William and Tom Holmes and by his sisters, Laura Lewis and Ruth Holmes. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant, Bill Rose officiated. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Military Honors by Otsego VFW Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Jack may be made to the Wings Home of Allegan or Otsego VFW Post #3030. We would like to thank each of you for your kindness and love for us during our sadness of losing our husband and father.

Russell C. BROWN, JR. AGE 69 – KALAMAZOO, MI

Russell passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at his home in Alamo Township. He was born August 8, 1946 in Plainwell, the son of Russell Sr. and N Jean (Brewster) Brown. Russell served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, throwing horseshoes, camping, going mudding, off roading and photography. On August 22, 1987 in Allegan, he married Kathleen Bergholtz who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jennifer Brown and Timothy Brown; grandchildren, Alex and Garrett Boyer and Ethan and Christopher Brown and his sister, Jeanne (Steven) Killick. He was preceded in death by his parents. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes with Military Honors will take place Wednesday, June 15, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. AGE 94 – TAVARES, FL (Formerly of Otsego and Pine Lake) Alberta passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2015 in Florida. She was born January 14, 1921 in Battle Creek, and was raised from birth by her grandmother, Orpha May Bishop. Alberta graduated from Plainwell High School in 1939 and then from Cosmetology School in 1940. She had owned and operated Nu Mode Beauty Shop in Otsego and co-owned Mario’s Beauty Shop in Otsego with her sister-in –law, Linda Mario. Alberta enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting, and was very fond of her home on Pine Lake. On June 28, 1941 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Allegan she married Joseph Mario. They have now been reunited in Heaven after Joseph’s passing on January 15, 2016. John (Jack) Irvin NICHOLS AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI

Jack went home to be with the Lord on June 7, 2016 after suffering a stroke. Jack was born in Niles, MI on January 4, 1932 to Irvin and Ethel (Tiffany) Nichols. He was a 1949 graduate of Plainwell High School. Jack’s family includes Barbara (Haffner), his wife of 65 years (married 3/2/1951), his children: Julie (Shawn) Gotch, Sally Nichols and Tom (Mary) Nichols; his sister Pat (Ralph) Taylor, and nine grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dave. Jack and Barbara served the Lord as missionaries in Haiti, Puerto Rico and Mexico from 1961 to 1998. Jack taught and trained pastors and helped them plant churches. After retirement they were active at Plainwell Baptist Church, the church where they had been married and which sent them out as missionaries. Visit with his family and friends on Friday, June 10 from 10-11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Plainwell (404 W. Bridge Street, Plainwell, MI 49080). A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at the same location. Memorial donations can be made to Nogales Baptist Seminary through Lifestory Funeral Homes. Frances passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born March 11, 1936 in Douglas, the daughter of Chester and Hilda (Stein) Wightman. For 19 years Frances had worked at Borgess Medical Center as a Registered Nurse until her retirement in 2000. In her spare time she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, writing poetry and playing the organ. Frances was a supporter of Christian Neighbors and the Shriners Hospitals for Children and was a member of the Eastern Star in Bedford, MI and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #89 in Allegan. Surviving are her husband, Milton “Red” Strand; son, Brad (Joy) Strand of Princess Anne, MD; daughter-in-law, Marve Strand of Watford, ND and her siblings, Lucille, Doris (George), Caroline (Jim), and Phil (Fae). She is preceded in death by her son, Mark, grandson, Travis Strand and brother, Dale. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Allegan Masonic Lodge, M-40 South, at 1:00 PM.
