The Old Testament writers had a difficult time naming God. The best they (Moses) could do was “I Am who I Am.” Jesus called Him Abba meaning Father. The word Abba means “daddy.” It is a tender, affectionate, personal word. A class of children was asked to draw a picture of God. They came up with some pretty good pictures of clouds, rainbows, etc. One girl drew a picture of her father complete with suit and tie. Before her father could say anything, the child said, “I didn’t know what God looks like, so I just drew my daddy instead.” The challenge for fathers is to show their children what God looks like and we can all learn from the example of Jesus.

Raymond W. SYERS AGE 79 – ALAMO, MI

Ray passed away June 15, 2015. He was born in Hopkins, MI on June 13, 1936. He was a truck driver for 40 years, retiring from Chemical Learman in 1999. Ray was a member of the Moose, V.F.W., The American Legion and Eagles for many years. He was also an Allegan County Sheriff’s Posse member. He enjoyed fishing, boating and golf. Surviving are his wife Betty, daughters, Stacey Thames and Shanon (Bryan) Bernier, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, brothers, John Howard Syers and Carrol Syers and sister, Frieda Harper. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Otsego. Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Kalamazoo, MI or to the American Cancer Society.

She also loved her loyal cat Maggie Mae. She was preceded in death by her husband Duane; her daughter Gail Lynn Mills, her sister Joyce McGuire and her parents. Sandra worked 25 years at Upjohn. Margaret C. “Marge” AVERY AGE 86 – OTSEGO, MI

Marge passed away Friday, June 12, 2015 at her home in Otsego. She was born December 28, 1928, the only child of Leonard and Helen (Beale) Loomis. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and attended Western Reserve University for two years. She married in 1950 and was blessed with 3 children. After completing college and a degree in Library Science, she taught school and also was a school librarian. In 1969 Marge moved to Michigan. There she met and married Kenneth Avery on June 12, 1971. With his two children they became a happily “blended” family and had a teen graduate from high school for four years in a row. Marge completed her working years as a teller at Kalamazoo Savings (now Charter One) and retired in 1992. In her spare time Marge enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, and quilting. She made many quilts for family and friends. She loved horses and dogs. Rosie and Lola were her very special canine friends. She is survived by her children; Carol (Bob) Howard of Battle Creek, Holly Guminski of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Bruce (Susan) Ramsey of Silverdale, WA, Alan (Rhonda) Avery of Oscoda and Glen Ramsey of Alamo Township. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ken, on November 15, 2005 and by her daughterin-law, Kimberly Ramsey, wife of Glen Ramsey on April 3, 2015. A Christian Funeral was held Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego, Pastor Josh Olson officiated. She will be laid to rest next to her husband Kenneth in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Frankfort, MI. Contributions in memory of Marge may be made to Peace Lutheran Church or the ASPCA. Paul (also known as “Shorty” at the Moose Lodge in Otsego) passed away June 11, 2015 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. Longtime resident of Otsego/Plainwell area, Paul worked at Menasha for several years. He enjoyed driving truck for a living and taking road trips with his wife. He will be very missed by all his family and friends. A special thanks to Hospice and Life Care Center for all their wonderful care.
