“LAY SERVANT MINISTRIES”

“On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria” – Acts 8:1

Since the beginning of the church lay persons have been empowered by the Holy Spirit to serve Jesus Christ. While the apostles did their share of the work, the New Testament Church was largely a lay movement. Persons such as Stephen, Philip and Paul led this movement. The Protestant Reformation reinforced the idea of “Priesthood of all believers” meaning that every believer is a minister. In our own denomination a man by the name of John Wesley is considered the Father of Methodism. His ministry literally transformed a century. Wesley believed the work of evangelism was more than what the ordained clergy could do alone. Thousands of persons were being converted to Christ and needed to be taught the Scriptures. Thus, he introduced the concept of lay preaching. Today we call them Lay Servants, modeled after the example of Christ who washed His disciples’ feet (John 13). While all of us are ministers at some level, Lay Servants in our denomination are called of God, filled with the Holy Spirit and trained to perform such ministries as leading, caring, preaching and teaching in the local church and beyond. We will be celebrating Lay Servant Ministry in our church this Sunday, June 28, 2015 at l0:00 a.m. Chris Slinkman will deliver the good news and be commissioned as a Lay Servant. Come and see! Prayer: Dear Lord, bless the service all of us are privileged to share for Your glory. Amen.

The Allegan County Sheriff's Office and the Plainwell Department of Public Safety are encouraging parents & caregivers to bring children in their car seats to a free Child Safety Seat Inspection to be held: Tuesday, June 30, 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Plainwell Department of Public Safety, 119 Island Avenue, Plainwell. A limited amount of replacement seats will be available at most inspection stations for those who qualify.

AGE 89 – BATTLE CREEK, MI formerly of Otsego Betty went home to be with the Lord on Thurday, June 18, 2015 in Battle Creek. She was born March 2, 1926 in Otsego the daughter of Eber and Helen (VanFleet) Smith. She had received a teaching certificate from Allegan County Normal School. Surviving are her children, Richard Veenkant of Battle Creek, Robert ‘Bob’ Veenkant of Covington, KY, Chuck (Pam) Veenkant of Kalamazoo, Helen Kerne of Pomeroy, WA, ZoAnn Veenkant of CA and James White of McKinney, TX; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special niece Deborah (Greg) Guina. Betty was preceded by 2 husbands, Herman Veenkant and Jesse White; an infant daughter Barbara Jean in 1951; 4 sisters, Dorothy Smith, Helen Thompson, Evelyn Ringel and Frances Smith; a brother, Harold Smith. A funeral service was held June 24, 2015 at the Northeastern Baptist Church, Kalamazoo with Pastor Greg Bishop, officiating. Burial was held at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. In lieu of flowers contributions in memory of Betty may be made to the Funeral Home for expenses. Gordon Carlton REICHELT AGE 82 – SPARTA, MI

Gordon went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 23, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilene Hawley Reichelt in January and granddaughter, Audra. He was a faithful member of Kent City Baptist Church. Gordon courageously served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned a milk route business for 17 years. Gordon then retired from Farmers Co-Op. where he worked for 35 years. On Valentine’s Day in 1959 he married the love of his life, Ilene and they had two beautiful daughters. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Lori & Tim Beason, Linda & Jim Gleason; grandchildren, Sarah Beason, Daniel Beason, Hannah Wheeler, and Rebekah Wheeler; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Duaine Reichelt officiating. Friends may meet the family at the funeral home on Saturday, 3 – 7 P.M. Ray passed away June 15, 2015. He was born in Hopkins, MI on June 13, 1936. He was a truck driver for 40 years, retiring from Chemical Learman in 1999. Ray was a member of the Moose, V.F.W., The American Legion and Eagles for many years. He was also an Allegan County Sheriff’s Posse member. He enjoyed fishing, boating and golf. Surviving are his wife Betty, daughters, Stacey Thames and Shanon (Bryan) Bernier, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, brothers, John Howard Syers and Carrol Syers and sister, Frieda Harper. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life Service will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Otsego. Contributions in his memory can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Kalamazoo, MI or to the American Cancer Society.

James K. PARKS AGE 82 – OTSEGO, MI

James passed away on June 23, 2015. He was born December 15, 1932 in Grand Rapids, MI to Richard and Berenice (Churcott) Parks. Jim kept his marvelous sense of humor right up to the end. During the Korean War Jim was stationed in Tokyo. He and a friend went duck hunting on the Sea of Japan during his years in the Army. He enjoyed a lifetime of hunting and fishing throughout Michigan and in Wyoming. Jim loved children, particularly his grandkids. He would lovingly tease them and then dazzle them with his winning smile. Jim loved motorcycling and went on trips to the Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 1 in California. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Marlene Zimmerman, whom he married January 24, 1959 in Windsor, Ontario; his children, Jeff (Diane) Parks of Grandville, Marianne Morgan of Traverse City and Beth Parks (Keith Doezema) of Martin; eight grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Eric Parks, Megan Parks, Jacob Morgan, Emily Morgan-Ellis (Taylor Ellis), Benjamin Morgan, Brian Doezema, Alissa Doezema and Sahrie Doezema; and a great-granddaughter, Elena. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert (Retta) Parks, Gloria Medendorp, Richard (Sherry) Parks and Diane Murphy. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Donna, Marge and Jean. Cremation has taken place and a service for James will be held in late July. Contributions in memory of Jim may be made to WVGR- Radio, Michigan Radio, 535 W. Mary Jane ‘Bunny’ CARY AGE 89 – OTSEGO, MI

Mary Jane “Bunny” passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015 in Kalamazoo. She was born November 6, 1925 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Jefferson and Frances ‘Kitty’ Cummings. She graduated from Western Michigan University and taught in Dowagiac, Gobles and then for Otsego Public Schools for 35 years retiring in 1985. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing cards, bowling, ceramics and shopping. On June 6, 1948 she married Paul ‘Pete’ Cary who survives. Also surviving are her children, Chris (David) Hicks of Springfield, IL, Peter (Laura) Cary of Otsego and Kevin (Melissa) Cary of Cedar Springs; her granddaughter Helena Cary. A Funeral Service was held Thursday June 25, 2015 at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. AGE 78 – OTSEGO, MI Beverly passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 in the arms of her family. She was born October 17, 1936 in Homer to Clinton and Bertha (Carlisle) Drinkwater. Beverly was a devoted homemaker and loved being with her family and taking care of her grandkids. In her leisure time she enjoyed playing cards and Bingo, working in her yard and she loved to dance. Surviving are seven children, Marvin (Nancy) Cox of Otsego, Robert (Pattye) Cox of Kalamazoo, Steven (Carla) Cox of Cooper, Elaine (David) Cowels of Martin, Dora (Bruce) Watson of Plainwell, Nora (Richard) Cheyne and Michelle (Frederick) McCloud, both of Otsego; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Dwight (Betty) Drinkwater, Joyce Piepkow and Carol Hebert all of Springport and Janice (Jim) Butler of Homer; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin R. Cox in 1990; and by her siblings, Gerald Drinkwater, Doris Rowbotham, Marlene Howell, June Bigelow and William Drinkwater. A Funeral Service will be held at

AGE 84 – OTSEGO, MI Fred passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at his home. Mr. Katje was born September 12, 1931 in Martin to Gary and Bessie (VanderPloeg) Katje and was a lifelong resident of the area. For 38 years he was employed with Menasha Corp. in Otsego, retiring in 1994. For over 50 years he had been a member of Calvary Community Church. In his leisure time Fred enjoyed gardening, snowmobiling, camping and being with his family. On May 8, 1965 in Otsego he married Marilyn Rantz who survives. Also surviving are his children, Dawn Katje, Kim Kanet, Jeff (Sue) Martin and Kate Katje; grandchildren, Brooke (Matt) Bakhuyzen, Colleen (Jason) Broadhurst, Chad (Sami) Martin and A.J. (Laura) Foote; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Joshua, Benjamin, Faith, Esther, Sarah, Xander, Zacory and Shailyn; brothers, Jim, John and Bob, sisters, Ann, Emily, Dorothy, Joyce and Joan and their spouses; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a sister, Betty; and a great-grandson, Levi. A funeral service was held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 25, 2015 at the Martin Reformed Church, Pastor Joshua Amaezechi officiating. Burial followed at East Martin Cemetery. Ernest J. ‘Ernie’ HAGERMAN AGE 83 – ALLEGAN, MI

Mr. Hagerman passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Wings Home in Allegan. He was born January 14, 1932 in Shepherd, MI to Ernest and Vera (Edmonds) Hagerman. Ernie served his country in the U.S. Army. For many years he was employed in sales, retiring in 1996. In his leisure time he enjoyed family time, playing cards, going to the casino, hunting and fishing. On May 6, 1974 in Allegan he married Pat Collins, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Robin Laraway of Allegan and Rinda (Michael) Taylor of Plainwell; grandkids, Chaston (Haley) Querbach, Mandi (Tony) Longtin and Aaron (Sean) Roberts; a sister, Mavis Querbach of Plainwell; many nieces, nephews and cousins; a close friend, Bob Conley; and many loving neighbors. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Armond, George and Everett; and by his sister, Helen Cook. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at Hartman’s Conference Center 690 Eastern Ave., Allegan, at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 7, 2015, with Chaplain Greg Carlson officiating. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Ernie may be made to Wings Home in Allegan or West Michigan Cancer Center.
