PLAINWELL’S KENYON PARK GETS AN UPGRADE PLAINWELL

Kenyon City Park is a 31.5 acre regional park that serves the recreational needs of the City of Plainwell and its neighboring cities & townships. The park features 3 softball fields, soccer fields, a picnic pavilion, and restrooms. Located at 929 Lincoln Parkway, Plainwell.

The Rotary Club of Plainwell recently initiated and completed an upgrade project for Kenyon City Park. The project included new playground equipment in the way of a spider climber, balance beam, charcoal grills and a new coat of paint to the picnic pavilion. Plainwell Rotary secured a matching grant from Rotary District 6360 and raised the remainder of the money through various fundraisers as well as contributions from The City of Plainwell, ConestogaRovers and Associates, JBS, Home Depot and Hardings Market. The project embraces one of the six “Areas of Focus” for Rotary, namely Economic and Community Development. Rotary, through its fundraising activities, the support of the communities and its members; lend support to a multitude of projects and charities that assist people at the local, state, national and international levels. This project was supported by the community for the benefit of the community. Plainwell Rotary thanks everyone for helping with this worthy project.

This article is about the importance of the Third Person of the Holy Trinity: the Holy Spirit. We are good at remembering the seasons of Christmas and Easter, but what about Pentecost? Pentecost is the longest season on the church calendar and commemorates the birth of the Church and the coming of the Holy Spirit in His fullness (Acts 2:4). Without Pentecost (Holy Spirit) there is no such thing as Christianity. David passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015 in Kalamazoo. David was born August 15, 1927 in Kalamazoo to Floyd McNair and Margaret Marie (Kelly) Chappell. He graduated from St. Augustine High School and attended Western Michigan University. David was an Army Veteran of WWII serving as a radio operator in the occupational force in Japan. For many years he was employed with Local #357 Plumber Pipefitters and served as Superintendent during the construction of the Cook and Palisades Nuclear Plants. He was a former member of the Plainwell Lions Club and the Otsego Elks and had served as a St. Margaret School Board Member. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus #7796 and had served as Grand Knight and received the Knight of the Year award several times. Dave had built several of his homes and in his leisure time he enjoyed sailing on Lake Michigan and Pine Lake. On September 30, 1950 at St. Augustine’s in Kalamazoo he married Marilyn Elizabeth Allen, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Gregory (Jodi Voss) of Yakima, WA, Jeff (Char) of Plainwell, Jennifer (Tim) Mitchell of Otsego, David (Gail Harmon) of Shelbyville, Nancy (John) Eaton of Kalamazoo and Joel (Cynthia) of Otsego; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle in 1984; a granddaughter, Erica Mitchell in 2009; a great-granddaughter, Audrey Mellis in 2011; and siblings, Robert, Betty Johnson, Richard, Paul, James, Fredric and Gerald. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Margaret Catholic Church Monday, June 1, 2015 with Rev. Fr. Donald Klingler, Celebrant. Burial followed at St. Margaret Catholic Cemetery, Otsego, with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030. Contributions in memory of David may be made to St. Margaret School, or Knights of Columbus #7796. Millie passed away Friday, May 29, 2015 in Kalamazoo. She was born Decembeer 23, 1939 in Steele, MO, the daughter of Bryan and Ethel (Basden) Cooper. Millie loved to sing and she loved being with her family. Surviving are 5 children, Teddy (Catherine) Winn, Darla (Tim) Lassiter, Karen (Doug) VanderPyle, Patricia (Rick) Sheldon, Bryan Winn; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Rickie Sheldon; greatgranddaughter, Aaliyah Hamblin and by her 4 brothers, Paul, Jim, Bob and Joe Cooper. Cremation has taken place. Al (Topper) passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015 after a long battle with cancer. The loving son of Alvin (Sr.) and Connie Frisch, Al was born in Antigo, WI on March 6, 1971. He received his diploma from Vicksburg Adult Education. Al was an avid hunter, fisherman and Owner/Operator and delivered for Home Depot. He married the love of his life, Sheila VanderVeen on October 10, 2009. Al is survived by his parents Alvin Sr. and Connie (Boodt) Frisch, wife Sheila, children; Alyssa, Codey, and Danny; sisters, Tina Bannister, and Michelle Johnson and his nieces and nephews. Ruth passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at her home. Ruth was born February 9, 1921 to Walter & Neve (Powers) Amick. Ruth’s family includes her children: Lawrence (Elaine) Lonsbury, Lavern (Mary Lou) Lonsbury, Linda (Allen) Sonnerville, Leland (Jill) Lonsbury; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 plus years, Lester, her brother, Ford and a grandchild, Curtiss. Ruth enjoyed reading and crocheting. She also enjoyed traveling and loved the Lord. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June, 8 at 1:00 p.m. at the Oak Grove Bible Church: 7655 Ravine Rd. Kalamazoo MI 49009. Memorial donations can be made to Reverence Home, Health and Hospice. Gloria J. LAFOUNTAIN AGE 62 – OTSEGO, MI

Gloria passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at her home in Otsego. She was born August 19, 1952 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Melvin and Betty (Randall) Hawley. She enjoyed watching the birds, especially hummingbirds, taking care of her chickens, cooking, keeping her house tidy and going to garage sales. Gloria lived for her family and loved spending time with and taking care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On January 18, 1969 in Otsego, she married Richard “Rick” LaFountain who survives. Also surviving are her 5 children, Deb (David) VanDerHoff, Dixie LaFountain, Ricky LaFountain, Amanda (Micah) Herring and Amy LaFountain all of Otsego; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and by her sister, Doris Bular of Allegan. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Don, Ron, Gary and Doug. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
