Greetings Library Patrons! It is with guarded optimism that we are excited to announce we will be heading into Phase Two of our Reopening Plan!! HERE ARE THE IMPORTANT DATES: The library begins to reopen starting next week! Monday, June 8: Nonessential ODL Staff return to work to prepare for a drive holds. All materials returned will be quarantined for 72 hours. Your returns will not be checked in for four days after you return them. No fines will be accrued during the quarantine period because all checkins will be backdated 4 days.

Monday, June 15: Drive Thru Pickup Window Opens (Procedure follows)

As things have changed on an almost constant basis, these dates could be subject to further change. We want to stress that the safety of our community and staff is of top priority to us. Staff at our drive thru window will be trained in proper use of PPE, have daily health screenings/temperature checks upon arrival to work. Staff will be trained in procedures to keep Drive Thru services as sanitary and touch free as possible, but we do wish for the community to realize they will need to take steps to protect themselves also when utilizing any curbside services. If you are a vulnerable adult who wishes to have a trusted friend or relative pick up your materials, please call the library after June 10 to arrange for that.

We will not be ready to begin a social distance model of the library (Phase 3) beyond drive thru for an undetermined amount of time. We need to install Plexiglas and signage, reorganize our library features, put other safety features into place, and develop new procedures for our staff. It is possible that computer service could return before the stacks reopen. Preparing for the social distance model of the library could take several weeks or more, or could be ready sooner than we think. We have been currently working on getting our roof repaired, working with a remote staff, ordering PPE, preparing for drive thru pickup, as well as regular administrative duties. All of this is new to all of us. We thank you for your continued patience as we get through this time together and look forward to serving you at the Drive Thru Pickup window!

ANNOUNCING ODL’s NEW DRIVE THRU PICKUP! Drive Thru Window Pickup Procedure: Place your material(s) on hold by using the library’s online card catalog or by calling the library at (269) 694-9690. If you are able, please use the online system for placing holds. Begin placing holds online and by phone starting June 10. The Drive Thru Pickup Window opens on Monday, June 15! Open window hours will be: Mon-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-3.

Items requested will be held for 7 days before being returned to the shelves. Fines may not be paid at the window. Please utilize the book drop for book returns. Staff will NOT take returned items at the window. Please call the library with any issues with your library card do not address library issues at the curbside window. The drive thru pickup is for drive thru pickup of holds ONLY. ABSOLUTELY NO WALK-UP or BICYCLE CHECKOUTS at the window, FOR YOUR SAFETY THE DRIVE-UP WINDOW IS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES ONLY and all patrons must remain inside of their vehicle. Staff will only bring items to the window that are already on hold via the methods described above. Please do not pull up the window and then request your items. Regular material limits and checkout rules, and fees for lost/damaged items apply. We will also offer Interlibrary loan via curbside pickup when the Melcat service returns.

Because we do not know the volume of cars to expect at first, we request that you enter on Platt Street and pull up to the library’s marked drive thru pickup window (just beyond the drive thru book drop). Please do not block Dix Street waiting in line. Use the Platt Street entrance instead. Library staff will be at the curbside window. There is a two-way intercom. Staff will request your library card number, please have this handy to read to them. They will not be collecting your physical card. If you do not have a library card, they will ask an identifying verification question to confirm your identity. Staff will checkout your holds to you, and deliver them through the window. Your items will be slid out the window to you in a bag inside a tub.

Charles “Chuck” CARTEN

Milton K. (Red) Strand passed away on May 10, 2020, in Princess Anne, MD. He was born on August 11, 1932 in Kalamazoo, MI the son of Carl and Mildred Strand. He was a 1950 graduate of Allegan High School, and received an Assoc degree in Agriculture from Michigan State Univ. and managed several grain elevators around Michigan before returning to live in Allegan County. He served in the USAF during the Korean war. He loved to spend time in his cabin near Mesick and deer hunting with his friends. He was a Mason for 63 years and was Past Master of Allegan Masonic Lodge 111. In 1955 he married Frances Wightman who predeceased him in 2016. He is survived by his son Brad (Joy) Strand of MD, daughter in law Marve Strand, and granddaughter MJ of ND, brother Fred (Bonnie) Strand and sister Joyce (George) Galloway, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wiife, son Mark, grandson, Travis Strand, 3 sisters and 1 brother. Milton was a quiet man who was very courageous. Per his wishes cremation has taken place and no service is planned at this time.

Charles Carten passed away on June 3, 2020, at the age of 82. Chuck was born on December 23, 1937 to Charles & Theressa (Snyder) Carten. Chuck married Charlene on January 23, 1960. He served his country proudly in the US Navy from 1955 to 1958. He is survived by his wife Charlene; his children: Kimberly Cochran, Karen Carten and Becky (Julie) Carten-Crandell; four grandchildren: Trevor Cochran, Mindy (Michael) Daws, Leah Carten-Crandell and Aaron Carten-Crandell; great grandchildren: Ryleigh Daws, Hayden Daws; his uncle Pete Snider and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Bonnie (Leslie) Sweeris. Memorial donations may be made to Paws with a Cause or Hospice of Holland. Ron HOLMES

AGE 83 • PLAINWELL, MI Ron passed away peacefully at his daughter's home in Plainwell, on Sunday May 31, after a 4 year battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Ronald Richard Holmes was born on July 3, 1936 in Cincinnati, OH. His family moved to Kalamazoo in the late 1940's. He attended St. Augustine Catholic School where he met the love of his life Donna M. O'Bryan in the 7th grade. They were married in October 1955 and celebrated 64 yrs. of marriage. Ron was employed by the railroad for 43yrs and could hear a train whistle from anywhere. For many years Ron was a transport volunteer for the Cancer Center and the Sisters of St. Joseph. Ron was also an active member of the 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus. Ron was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Ann, adult son Andrew Holmes, and great grandson Brayden Curry. He is survived by his wife Donna, and his children: Tom and Paula Holmes (Lee and Hannah), Joe and Sandy Holmes (Audrey, Noelle, Kirk) and Jeanne Greene (Ben, Tim and Rachel Gauthier), 8 great-grand children, his brother, William Holmes, and many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Funeral Mass will be celebrated July 3, at 10:00 am, at St. Augustine Cathedral Rev. Fr. Robert Creagan celebrant. Ronald L. FRANCISCO AGE 85 • DOSTER, MI

Ron was born on the kitchen table, in the depths of the Depression, on a hard-scrabble dairy farm in Cressy Corners, which in those years was a stop along the C K & S railroad, roughly half-way between Doster and Richland Junction. After turning 19, and leaving briefly to serve his country, he decided given the choice he'd just as soon not spend his life poking his head underneath the hinder end of cows so he left the farm for factory employment, first in a paper mill and later with Fisher Body. He lived the American dream, marrying young, siring a son and a daughter and providing his family with a secure Middle Class life style. He was a steady, ever loyal and always forgiving father. He discouraged his children from wearing blue jeans to school, reasoning jeans were all he had as a boy and wanting his own kids to have better. Later in life he married a second time and took his adult step-children into his heart. Although Ron died within a few miles of where he was born, he enjoyed travel and for many years lived the life of a snow-bird, wintering first in New Mexico and later Alabama. He was always ready for a trip north and for many, many years participated in the annual Mackinac Bridge walk. He will be remembered for his interest in others and his generous spirit. He won a greased pig at the Barry County Fair. As a recently married man with a growing family he really could have used the meat himself but ended up giving it away to another less fortunate family. A visitation will be held on Monday, June 8 from 10:00am to 11:00am at the McCowen & Secord Funeral Home Marshall & Gren Chapel 120 S. Woodhams St. Plainwell MI 49080

AGE 77 • PLAINWELL, MI John passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020 at his home in Plainwell. He was born July 15, 1942 in Moulton, Alabama, the son of Clinton and Jessie Terry. For many years John had worked on a farm until his retirement in 2008. In his free time he enjoyed bodybuilding. Surviving are his daughter, Angela, sisters, Etta Marshall, Hasal Bumgart, Willa Bellingar and brother, Ken Terry. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Charles Jr.; daughter, Jessica and siblings, Robert, Lacey, Besmer, Dee, Edna, J.C., M.C., R.T. and Laurdson. A private family graveside service took place at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego with Pastor Ken Terry Jr. officiating. AGE 53 • ORANGEVILLE, MI Tracie passed away peacefully on June 3, 2020 at Henry Ford Hospital with her family at her side. Tracie was born on January 13, 1967 in Plainwell, the daughter of J.C. and Janet (Swain) Ritchie. Tracie was always up for a new adventure. She loved the outdoors, especially mushroom hunting and ﬁshing. Tracie would always help anyone with anything and loved to make people laugh. She will be remembered for her contagious smile. Tracie loved her kids, grandkids and extended family. She shared a special bond with her grandkids, especially Baylee. Tracie is survived by her parents; sons: Josh (Nicole) Holden and Devin (Tylier) Holden; grandchildren: Conner, Jordan, Baylee, and one grandchild due in December; brother: Jay (Ashley) Ritchie; sister: Teresa (John Madden) Banas and Tammy (Larry) Drewyor; several nieces and nephews; and many extended family and friends. Tracie was preceded in death by a brotherin-law: Frank Banas, grandparents: Elva Wilson, Green Richie, and Rhoda Richie. Tracie’s funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 8, 2020, 11:00 AM at the Pentecostal Church of Christ with a visitation one hour prior from 10:00-11:00 AM. “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” – Jeremiah 29:11

Dear Graduates,

You will be remembered as the class that endured the historic COVID 19 pandemic crisis. This is an unprecedented event you neither expected nor wanted. In some ways, the last months of your senior year in high school were taken away from you. Your dreams of finishing strong were diminished. Your class lived the old adage, “Life is what happens when you are planning for something else.” You have probably learned more in the past months of your high school education than you ever thought possible. You have learned to adapt and adjust. You have learned perseverance and vigilance at a tender age. In ancient times there was a class of people who faced similar challenges. Their story is told in the Bible (Old Testament book of Jeremiah). Jeremiah was an Old Testament prophet whom God sent with a message of hope and salvation. The people of God belonging to Jeremiah’s generation were experiencing a different kind of crisis and for a different reason. They experienced 70 years of forced exile in the ancient city of Babylon (Modern day Iraq). It was something they definitely were not prepared for. Instead of “stay at home,” they were forced to live “away from home.” Your class has at least one thing in common with them: an uncertain future. God did not forsake them. God had a plan for them just as God has a plan for you. God visited them through the prophet Jeremiah with a message of hope and promise: “I will give you a hope and a future” (paraphrased). What exactly does this mean? It means that God is for you, not against you. It means God has a plan for your life. God wants you to prosper but not in a way you may think. There is a difference between being rich in things and being rich in God. To be rich in God is to humble yourself before God. It is to seek God’s plan for your life and to glorify God in all that you do. History shows many who exceeded expectations. For example, Acclaimed American author, Helen Keller (1880-1968), was the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. She once said, “I thank God for my handicaps. For through them, I have found myself, my work and my God.” A newspaper editor fired Walt Disney because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” For the first third of her life, Wilma Rudolph could not even walk. In l960 she became the first American woman ever to win three gold medals in track and field in a single Olympics! I know these examples are extreme, but they have a point. We can face any challenge as long as we know we do not have to face it alone. Therefore, when a mountain is before you; climb it. When a hurdle is standing in front of you; jump over it! When you fall down; stand up and keep going! When running your race; never give up! Your generation has coined a new saying which I like. When facing a challenge, you tend to say, “I’ve got this!” God has a saying too. When placing your future in God’s hands; if you listen carefully, you will hear God saying, “I’ve got this!” (Philippians 4:13). Class of 2020: Congratulations! PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on June 15, 2020 at 5:45 o’clock p.m., at the Hopkins Elementary School, Hopkins, Michigan or electronically pursuant to Michigan Executive Order 2020-75, the Board of Education of Hopkins Public Schools will hold a public hearing to consider the District’s proposed 2020–2021 budget.

The Board may not adopt its proposed 2020-2021 budget until after a public hearing. A copy of the proposed 2020-2021 budget, including the proposed property tax millage rate, is available for public inspection during normal business hours at 400 Clark Street, Hopkins, Michigan.

The property tax millage rate proposed to be levied to support the proposed budget will be a subject of the hearing. This notice is given by order of the Board of Education.

Requirements for RUBBISH PICK-UP

1. All residents living on private roads must have the trash placed at the end of the road in a pile. 2. Refuse must be limited to what two men can lift. 3. Barrels with both ends cannot be picked up; land fills will not accept them. 4. All barrels, including barrels with trash in them, will be taken. Any barrel or container too heavy for two men to pick up will not be taken. 5. Trash piles should be located within easy reach from the road, not 20 to 30 feet, for the convenience of the trash haulers. 6. All objects must be bagged or put in containers that will be picked up. No loose materials will be picked up. 7. Containers must be left at curbside and they will not be returned. 8. Old appliances will be picked up if they can be lifted by two men. No refrigerators, freezers or air conditioners unless refrigerants are removed by a professional and tagged. Remember... Appliances can be recycled. 9. NO YARD WASTE! 10. NO BUILDING MATERIALS WILL BE PICKED UP 11. NO TIRES WILL BE PICKED UP 12. NO GARBAGE or container for food products will be picked up. 13. NO ROCKS, SAND, CONCRETE, RUBBLE OR DEAD ANIMALS will be picked up. 14. No motor oil or containers with liquids such as oil based and latex paint. Cans with dried paint are acceptable if lids are removed. 15. No call backs will be made if refuse is placed after the truck has serviced your house. 16. Complaints will be verified (field checked) by Township personnel and checked against driver’s log. 17. Any item not picked up because of the above reasons must be taken off the curbside and stored out of sight by noon of the day following each pick-up. 18.
