On Sunday, June 8, 2014, also known as Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the birth of the church. Originally, the Day of Pentecost (literally “the fiftieth”) was the Jewish Festival of Weeks (like our Thanksgiving Day observance) which was celebrated seven weeks after the wheat harvest season began. Here is the order of events: • His mighty resurrection! • His re-assuring post-resurrection appearances! • His comforting promise! “I will send my Holy Spirit” • His great commission! • His instruction to wait for the Holy Spirit to descend. • His glorious ascension into heaven!

Then it happened! 50 days following His resurrection His mighty Holy Spirit came in fullness and was marked by: • Tongues of fire • Infilling of the Holy Spirit • For the very first time the gospel of Jesus Christ was heard in l4 different languages. • Much excitement. • Rapid growth (3,000 souls converted in one day!) • The faith expanded as far away as Rome (l500 miles away) and to points beyond.

Whenever the name of Jesus Christ is lifted up; Whenever Christ is born in our hearts by faith; Whenever sinners repent and believers are filled with His love … the spirit of Pentecost continues to this day! So … Praise God for the Holy Spirit! Praise God for the gospel of Jesus Christ! Praise God for the church! Happy birthday church!
