“THE MEMORY CHAIR”

“In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple” – Isaiah 6:1

After more than 47 years Grandma Jo and I still have our first piece of furniture … a rocking chair we bought from Plainwell Decorators during the summer of our engagement. We stained it and finished it. It sat in Grandma Jo’s childhood home on Hicks St. until l967 (the year of our marriage) when we took it with us to Wilmore, KY where I attended seminary. When we drove to our first appointment (three years later), the rocking chair (still our only piece of furniture) rode on the top of my dad’s car held tight by a rope all the way to Jeromesville, Ohio! It followed us to East Jordan, Shelby, Parchment and Otsego. It rocked two generations of children in our family. It still has a creaking sound when we rock on it. Over the years we have accumulated other pieces of furniture, but this one has special meaning for us. It has been said a well-worn memory is a sacred thing. And now you know why I call it “the memory chair.” I think Isaiah, the prophet, would understand. God’s holy piece of furniture is not a chair, but a throne. Isaiah had a vision of the Lord sitting high upon a throne in the heavens. Jesus invites us to cope with daily living by lifting our eyes “on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits on God’s right hand in the place of honor and power.” (Col. 3:1 NLT).

In July, 1972, Kathy Sue Wilcox le her home aer an argument and she has not been seen since. She was 15 at the time, entering her sophomore year at Otsego High School. Her disappearance is still an open case with the Otsego P.D. It has been 42 years since Kathy disappeared. To help raise public awareness of Kathy’s disappearance, and to keep Kathy’s memory alive, there will be a remembrance held on ursday, July 17th at 6pm at Northside Park in Otsego, Michigan (330 Watson Road...aka 16th Street). e entire community is invited to this much overdue event to remember one of Otsego’s own missing children.

To the Family of John Try

We did not know John until we bought property across the street from them and built a new house. From the very first day John watched over our property like it was his own. At first we were not sure what to think of the guy who alway wore his hat backwards, but we quickly realized he had our backs. Our new neighborhood was safe under his watchful eye and we were grateful for that. John was the first to welcome us to the neighborhood and we were never strangers. He immediately treated us like he had known us all his life - he was just that kind of guy. Early on, we realized that John took extreme pride in how his yard looked and knew the pressure was on to try and meet his standards. Quickly we realized we were not up to the tasks, although we still tried everyday to keep our yard looking as good as his. Whenever we were outside working on a project, John went to his pole barn and came back with the right tool, or the right piece of equipment to make our work easier. He was especially happy if he could get out his little bobcat and play with it on our behalf. He never wanted anything in return and was always smiling and glad to help even though he had his own list of projects a mile long waiting for him to complete. What we most want you to know is that in the 5 short years we knew him he made a big impact on us and became very special to us. He always had a wave, a smile and time for us. He was a special person and we feel extremely lucky to have been fortunate enough to know him, although for way too short a period of time. Thanks for sharing him with us. We will both miss him everyday. Looking out the window, not seeing him going across the yard with his hat backwards, driving the golf cart, or mowing the lawn has been extremely difficult to bear. The neighborhood will never again be quite as special as it used to be. Rest assured John, that in your absence we will keep a watchful eye out for Pam and try to make sure she is safe and taken care of, as you would if the situation were reversed. You all have our love, support and prayers.

Obituaries George Pearl CHANNELLS, Jr. AGE 86 – MARTIN, MI

George passed away on the evening of July 5, 2014 at the Wings of Hope Hospice House in Allegan. Born January 19, 1928, his parents were George P. Channells, Sr. and Maude (Delaney) Channells. George attended Martin Public Schools until serving his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After his service, George worked for many years as a printer for Saniwax Paper Company, and for the City of Kalamazoo. George loved working with his hands, building two homes for his family, and many furniture pieces for his loved ones. He enjoyed bowling, ﬁshing, and had a deep love of animals. On February 25, 1949 he married Pauline Troff, celebrating 65 years of marriage this year. George is survived by his wife, Pauline (Troff) Channells; one daughter, Brook and her husband, Thomas, Kievit; sons George Channells III and wife Catherine; Rodney Channells and wife Kathy; and Joseph Channells; grandchildren Curtis (Dawn) Channells, Timothy (Leann) Channells, Jeremy (Terri) Channells, George IV (Ashley) Channells, Erin (John) Clements, Kiley (Scott) Haynes, Dustin Channells, and Heather Channells, as well as 16 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his parents, and by his son, Todd Channells, in 1972. A gathering for friends and family to remember George will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 851 E. 112th Avenue in Martin from 2pm to 5pm. Contributions in memory of George may be made to the Wings of Hope Hospice House in Allegan.
