“BATTLE AT THE BORDER”

The issue of immigration has been highly publicized and politicized lately. What really got our attention and broke our hearts were images of children being separated from their parents. This caused a great public outcry, as it should. Unfortunately this is not a new problem. The battle at the border has been going on for many centuries. The question is whether or not there is a Christian response. A thoughtful response would come from at least three sources: THE BIBLE

As always, the Bible is our guide. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, sharper than any twoedged sword …” (Hebrews 4:12). In the Bible, we are all aliens. Here are some examples from the Scriptures: • God said to the Israelites, “Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt” (Exodus 22:21). • Ruth, a Moabite and daughter in law, was befriended by Naomi (Ruth 1:16-17). • Early in His childhood, the parents of Jesus were forced to flee to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15). • In Romans 12:13 we are told to “Share with God’s people in need. Practice hospitality.” • By faith, Abraham “made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country” (Hebrews 11:9). • “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:1). THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS CHRIST

In one of His parables, Jesus honored a Good Samaritan who helped a person in need (Luke l0:29-42). Jesus welcomed the stranger, encouraged the forsaken and loved His enemies. He called out His disciples who wanted Him to cast down fire from Heaven upon those who were not like them. He honored the faith of an outsider. He crossed the racial bearer. In the greatest sermon ever preached, He taught us to turn the other cheek, go the second mile and to love our enemies. Jesus built bridges not walls. COMMON SENSE

Common sense tells us to do the right thing. Jesus gives us the bottom line of all arguments, “As you have done it unto one of the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40).

In other words, we are to treat others as we would treat Him. Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to treat others as we would treat You. Amen.

Bennett Family Agency Moves to New Location in Plainwell

Bennett Family Agency had an official ribbon cutting ceremony at their new location at 133 N. Main Street in Plainwell earlier this month. Robert and Julli Bennett have owned their insurance agency since February of 2017 and have been a part of the Plainwell community since 2001. Their previous office on the other side of 131 worked well, but now they are downtown and "love the downtown bustle and all that the city has to offer to be involved in with community projects and events." Their new building used to be a dry cleaning business, then a photography business. "We were lucky enough to find the building at the right time and the owner was excited to pass the torch to another long time icon in the making for the Plainwell Community."

Mel passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at Alamo Nursing Home. He was born August 6, 1935 in Chicago, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Ortmann) Marschall. Mel graduated from Otsego High School in 1953, and went on to proudly serve his country in the US Army. For 35 years he had worked at Sears as a mechanic and had also worked 10 years at Otsego High School. In his free time Mel enjoyed hunting, working in his vegetable garden, farming and watching football. On September 29, 1956 in Kalamazoo he married Linda Scott who passed away in 2014. Mel and Linda loved their family very much and had been foster parents for 30 years. Surviving are his children, Diane (Gene) Slater and Carl Marschall; grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Slater, Scott (Kim) Slater, Keri (Sean) Newton, Kevin (Laura) Slater, Kristy (Travis) Taylor, Jessica Brady, Cassie Marschall and Chelsea Marschall and a very special sister-in-law, Sue Marschall. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Christopher in 1977 and brother, Chris Marschall. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 20, 2018 at the Alamo Community Congregational Church with Pastor Don Boss officiating. Burial will follow at Alamo Center Cemetery, Alamo Township. Contributions in memory of Mel may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, Alamo Nursing Home or Alamo Community Congregational Church. Edward G. JANKOWIAK AGE 66 - WAYLAND, MI

Ed passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at his home in Wayland. He was born May 10, 1952 in Saginaw, the son of Virgil and Bonnie (Hilliker) Jankowiak. Ed had worked at Carter Lumber and had been a truck driver for Best Way Disposal. In his spare time he loved riding motorcycles. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. In 1990 he married Jessica Laws who survives. Also surviving are his children, Amy Middaugh, Timothy Jankowiak, Bob Schultz, Amy Schultz and Angela Schultz; 21 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister, Armena (Mike) Pett and brother, Bill (Deb) Jankowiak. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Erica Reed and brothers, Ken, Virgil Jr and Wayne. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Matthew ESHBAUGH AGE 39 - OTSEGO, MI

Matthew Paul Eshbaugh passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born July 25, 1978, in Kalamazoo, the son of Brad Eshbaugh and Cindy (Bular) Patterson. Matt had most recently worked as a lift operator at Bittersweet Ski Resort. On July 14, 2003, he married Heather Stolworthy and they were able to share their 15th anniversary together before his death. Matt cherished his time with his dogs, Xena and Bruizer. He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Heather Eshbaugh; children, Cameron and Cassia Baker; his mother, Cindy Patterson; father and stepmother, Brad and Julie Eshbaugh; his grandmothers: Nancy Eshbaugh and Luella Eshbaugh; his brothers and sisters: Kevin Slater, Andrew Eshbaugh, Michael Johnson, Joseph Johnson, and Dawn Johnson; several aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews, including a very special niece, Heather Michelle Marsh. Matt was preceded in death by his sister Michelle Johnson; step-father, Curtis Patterson; his grandfathers: Richard Bular and Ralph Eshbaugh; his aunt, Pamela Mathis and a dear aunt, Aunt Tootie Guthrie. The family will greet friends and family during a time to celebrate Matt’s life on Sunday, July 22, 2018, from 12-3 PM at Robert Morris Park (8415 East H Ave, Kalamazoo) on Campbell Lake. Marie passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born July 25, 1937 in Plainwell, the daughter of George and Betty (Leonard) Fletcher. Marie had worked at Checker Motors, General Motors and Perrigo. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and watching old western movies. Surviving are her children, Steve Oetman of Allegan, Terry (Tami) Oetman of Kalamazoo, Larry Oetman of Otsego and Alan Oetman of Plainwell; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and her brother, George Fletcher of Hamilton. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Tara Oetman and her siblings, Dean, Billy, Jack and Gail. A graveside service will take place at 1:00 P.M., Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.
