Out of Favor Boys is one of Southwest Michigan’s premier contemporary blues bands. They’ve been the house band at two of Kalamazoo’s longest-lasting Thursday Blues Jams at Wonderful’s Funky Basement and The 411 Club. The band has played with some national blues musicians like Tab Benoit, Watermelon Slim and Robert Bradley.

Steam Powered Bluegrass is a group of musicians based out of the greater Grand Rapids, Michigan area. They are one of the newer bands on the local scene, starting in 2011, made up of veterans from the West Michigan music scene. Each of the faces in the band are well known in a tri-state region as veteran pickers and singers.

WANTED: Auto Detail Shop Team Lead

Winner of West Michigan’s Best and Brightest Companies to work for is seeking the right individual to join this fast paced, high volume auto dealership in Plainwell MI as an Auto Detail shop team lead.

The Team Leader role will be a working leader and should have a proven track record of leading a team to reach its goal. A successful candidate in this positon will have excellent communication skills to provide training and daily direction to the team. As a Team Leader you will manage the flow of day to day operations ensuring deadlines are met. Candidates must be outgoing and people friendly, motivated and able to multi-task, as well as able to work with a deadline. As a working detailer you must be extremely thorough cleaning, polishing and waxing the automobile, both inside and out, to produce a show-quality level of detail. This position also ensures that all vehicles are prepped for delivery, clean and on time while adhering to the department delivery schedule. The Detailer will also cautiously move cars on the property organizing them in a presentable manner. This will be a full time position working the following schedule with additional hours as needed to exceed customer expectations: Monday: 9am-8pm, Tuesday/Wednesday: 11am-8pm, Thursday: off, Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday: 9am-4pm

Plainwell Welcomes River Bend Yoga The City of Plainwell held a ribbon cutting ceremony for new business, River Bend Yoga on July 15, 2016. Owner Abbie Hanson started River Bend Yoga in May 2016, formerly Flow Yoga. Abbie grew up dancing and always had a dream of owning her own studio. While in Chicago, she "took a yoga class and fell in love. I was encouraged that yoga stressed how you feel not so much how you look." She continued pursuing yoga as she moved across the country to California. "I began to practice with many amazing instructors and went through a 200 hour program with yoga guru Shiva Rea." She then brought that experience and love for yoga back to Michigan with her to her hometown. Abbie particularly loves this location, at 211 E. Bannister St., Suite A-1, because it's "a calm peaceful space nestled along the Kalamazoo river. The serenity of nature peaks through the windowsâ&#x20AC;¦" River Bend Yoga offers donationbased classes on Sundays at 5pm, with donations going to local charities. They also have classes outside at the Plainwell band shell on Tuesday nights during the summer. Beginners can try the Yoga for Beginners 6 week sessions to learn not only the basic yoga practice, but also the history and basic philosophy. “FAITHFUL IN LITTLE” By Rev. Dan Minor

You have been faithful with little things… Matthew 25:23 During the Civil War, a courier on horseback was given an urgent message and told to take it to the general engaged in a decisive battle. The story has it that the courier never made it because his horse “threw a shoe.” Later someone penned these famous lines: “For want of a nail, a shoe was lost. For want of a shoe, a horse was lost. For want of a horse, a rider was lost. For want of a rider, a message was lost. For want of a message, a plan was lost. For want of a plan, a battle was lost. For want of a battle, a war was lost.” Oh, the importance of little things. Here are some more examples: “The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Chinese proverb “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow” – unknown source In the Kingdom of God, little is much … feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, clothing the needy, visiting the sick and those in prison, etc. (Matthew 25:34-40). Doing the little things well is the difference between success and failure, strong marriages and weak marriages; good working relationships and weak working relationships; growing churches and declining churches. At the end of the day, we will be judged on how faithful we were in little things. What are some little things you can do today to encourage others? Prayer: Lord, help me to live my life in such a way that in the life to come I may hear your rewarding words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Amen.

OBITUARIES Ruth Mary Watkins PEW AGE 95 – KALAMAZOO, MI (Formerly of Bloomfield Hills)

Mrs. Ruth Mary Watkins Pew, formerly of Bloomfield Hills, died Thursday, July 14, 2016 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. She was married for 19 years to Frederick Norman Pew, who died in Meentinny, Cork County, Ireland on May 8, 1995. Ruth Mary, born January 7, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan, was the youngest daughter of the late Ralph Edmund Watkins and Grace Alice (Woodhouse), both of Detroit, Michigan. She was a direct descendant of Major General Benjamin Thaxter Lincoln, a patriot in the Revolutionary War. Ruth Mary spent her school years at the Convent of the Sacred Heart on Lawrence Avenue. During her teenage years she was a member of the TKE sorority and led a very active social life. She attended Michigan State College from 1939 to 1940 and was the freshman homecoming queen at Michigan State College in 1939. Mrs. Pew was a real estate agent in Bloomfield Hills while raising her daughters. One of the highlights of Mrs. Pew’s life was holding court at Chalmers Lake, on her floating chair wearing her flippers and blue flowered swim cap with a Coke in the beverage holder. Her daughters and their friends would spend long summer days swimming and hanging out on the raft while Mrs. Pew would share stories and fun times with them while trying to catch the elusive small mouth bass. Mrs. Pew was a lifelong resident of the Detroit area and lived on Chalmers Lake for 52 years until December 2003 when she moved to western Michigan to be under the care of her youngest daughter, Ruth Watkins Jaynes. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Watkins Pew, of Beverly Hills, Michigan and Ruth Watkins Jaynes, of Plainwell, Michigan. Interment took place on Friday, July 22, 2016 at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Academy of the Sacred Heart, 1250 Kensington Road, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 483043029. Rev. Gerald A. FISH

AGE 89 – SHELBYVILLE, MI (Formerly of Kalamazoo) Jerry went to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, July 14, 2016 at Wings Home in Allegan. He was born on October 1, 1926 in Dowagiac, the son of the late Guy and Marion (Pierce) Fish. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict serving in the South Pacific and the Philippine Islands; and also served in the US Army Reserve for 3 years. He had a love for God and his country. Jerry was employed by Consumers Power as a lineman for 41 years until his retirement. With his strong love for the Lord, he became an ordained minister and served in many capacities. Jerry was an active member of the Shelbyville United Methodist Church and previously at Oakwood United Methodist Church. He was a Boy Scout Leader with Oakwood Methodist Church Troop 16 with his 2 sons. Jerry was an active and proud member of Otsego American Legion Post #84, Otsego VFW Post #3030, and the National Rifle Association (NRA). He enjoyed hunting, camping, traveling and motorcycles. On February 18, 1945, he was married to Virginia (Niles) Fish, who preceded him in death on June 29, 2002. On November 29, 2003, he was married to Barb (Morris) Fish, who survives. Also surviving are three children: Judy (Ron) Hardy, Ken (Julie) Fisher, and Diane (Randy) Cheng; daughter-in-law: Myra Fish; three step-children: Jim (Sharon) Morris, Todd Morris and Bettejean (Dave) Bakutis; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eleven greatgrandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sister: Lois Foster of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death were his son: Jerry Fish; grandson: Chad Priest; sister: Louise Frank and half-brother: Charles Kelly. Interment took place on Wednesday, July 20, at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park, 3941 S. Westnedge Ave., Kalamazoo. A service to celebrate Rev. Fish’s life was held July 20, 2016. Pastor Sean Kidd officiated. Memorial contributions may be directed to Wings Home of Allegan or Shelbyville United Methodist Church. AGE 63 – PLAINWELL, MI Anne passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 at her home. Anne was born February 5, 1953 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Keith and Margaret (Cross) Bullock. She owned and operated her own currier service from which she retired. Anne enjoyed collecting bears, matches and crackle glass. She is survived by 2 sons, Delaneo (Regge). Haskins and Robert Haskins; 5 grandchildren; a daughter-inlaw, Rhonda; her sister, Lynne Livingston; a sister-in-law, Sally Bullock and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Paul Bullock. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service. James L. FULLER AGE 67 – OTSEGO, MI

Jim passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at Bronson Hospital. He was born March 8, 1949 in Allegan the son of George and Dorene (Collick) Fuller. Jim served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. As a young man he had worked for the Otsego DPW and learned to operate heavy equipment which he continued to do after his employment there. In his spare time Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a member of the Otsego VFW Post #3030. On August 31, 1968 at the Otsego Church of God he married Pamela Boze who survives. Also surviving are his children, James II (Joni) Fuller of Delton and Sarah (Houston) Morrow of Galesburg; 6 grandchildren, Aeryk (Whitney), Stacie, James III, Shelby, Mia and Miles; 2 greatgrandchildren, Jaxson and Raelin; siblings, Linda (Carl) Sparks and George Fuller Jr. along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Phyllis Phelps, Sue Cardiff and Norma Todd. Friends may visit with Jim’s family starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the Funeral Service at 12:00 PM with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Roger passed away July 19, 2016 in Plainwell. Roger was born June 7, 1965 in Adrian the son of Donald and Betty (Bent) Augustine. Roger enjoyed following NASCAR, football and baseball. He had lived in Fife Lake and had recently moved back to the Plainwell area. Surviving are his sister Rhonda Augustine of Traverse City; aunts Ruth Barber and Betty Barber; many cousins including special cousins, Deborah Barber and Linda Sherwood; special friends Chuck Sayers and Kurt Kole. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at this time. Contributions in memory of Roger may be made to a charity of choice. Dorothy passed away Monday, July 18, 2016 in Kalamazoo. She was born October 5, 1928 in Kalamazoo. Dorothy graduated from Plainwell High School in 1946 and had worked at DeHavens in Plainwell and at various shops in Plainwell and Otsego. She loved to read and she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years she enjoyed spending the winters in Florida. Dorothy adored her husband Glenn whom she married on January 29, 1955 in Plainwell and who passed away in 2005. She is survived by two daughters, Sheila (David) Howard of Plainwell and Kim Gregory of Kalamazoo; her grandchildren, Brad Howard of Plainwell and Tami (Peter) Koppers of Otsego; great-grandchildren, Meghan, Emma and Molly; sisters-in-law, Beverly Colegrove and Wilma Gregory. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Doris Dolsen and many other siblings and family members. Dirk “Don” H. ELFERINK AGE 95 – ZEELAND, MI formerly of Martin

Dirk passed away on July 18, 2016. Born in Martin on July 1, 1921, to Henry and Jennie (Van Duin) Elferink. He graduated from Martin High School and served his country during WWII in U.S. Army. Dirk married Wilma Jean Orris and they raised their four children on their family farm. Dirk also worked for Plainwell Paper for 23 years before his retirement. Dirk and Jean moved to Zeeland in 1995 and became members of First Reformed Church. In 2005, Jean preceded Dirk in death, and Dirk was also preceded in death by two daughters: Janet Westerveld and Linda Kramer. A new chapter started in Dirk's life when he met Juella "Judy" Schipper. They married June 10, 2006, and enjoyed 10 years of marriage together. Dirk is survived by his wife, Judy, children: Donna and Dan Oster of Zeeland, Donald Elferink of Holland, sons-in-law: Bert Westerveld of the Netherlands, and Dirk Kramer of Harriston, Ontario; 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, step-children: Pat and Larry Van Dam, Pam and Bob Rynsburger, Mark and Ellen Schipper, Robin and Steve Vork; 13 step-grandchildren, 33 step-great-grandchildren, brother Elbert and Shirley Elferink, in-laws: Pearl Shook, Lavina Schipper. Funeral services will be 11:00 Friday, July 22, 2016, First Reformed Church, 125 E. Lincoln Ave., Zeeland. Visitation is 10-10:45 am, prior to the funeral. Interment is in East Martin Cemetery.
