The Shoppers Guide was founded and published in 1940 by Howard Bargwell. He did all the work by hand. The paper was distributed once a month to approx. 1000 Otsego residents for free. The paper changed ownership through the years, and was bought in 1946 by Mack Bennett. He increased circulation into Plainwell and delivery to once a week, distributing to approx. 3500 residents. In 1970 computerized typesetting was offered and was purchased to improve the publication. Circulation was increased to 8500 residents. In 1974 due to the high costs of the postal service, the Shoppers Guide started its own delivery system. In 1975 it relocated to the current location downtown Otsego. Ron Bennett took ownership of the paper in the early 1980’s and after retiring in 2001, passed ownership to his son, Marty Bennett. The Community Shoppers Guide is now a 3rd generation owned company.

Why Settle?

“I press on toward the goal …” Philippians 3:14 A fifty year memory comes to mind as I write these words. Having returned home from a track meet I ran in, my mother asked, “Well, how did you perform?” I replied, “I could have done better.” She asked, “Then, why didn’t you?”

Too often we settle for less than our best effort. It is true in every field of endeavor … education, music, athletics, business, church, government, our work, our profession, our relationships. I have heard people say, “When I retire I’m going to sit back and do nothing.” Are you kidding? One of the reasons I enjoy writing these articles is that it keeps me on the growing edge. It would be easy for me to simply go to my files and pull out old messages and repeat them in this column. If so, I would be settling.

If we are not moving forward, progressing, improving; then it can be said of us we are regressing. This is especially true in the Christian life. As believers in the living Christ, mediocrity should not be in our vocabulary. Examples of mediocrity from Scriptures include: • The Elder Brother (Luke l5) • The One-talent Servant (Matthew 25) • The Foolish Maidens (Matthew 25) • The Priest and the Levite (Luke 10) In the above verse (Philippians 3:14), Apostle Paul is saying he wants to be all Christ wants him to be. I like the way Eugene H. Peterson says it. “… don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an authority in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward – to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back” (The Message).

I think my mother was right. Why settle for anything less than my best for God? Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Obituaries Christopher SMIT

AGE 84 – PLAINWELL, MI Christopher passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013 in Allegan. Mr. Smit was born February 18, 1929 in Kalamazoo to Christopher and Velma (Rutledge) Smit. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Christopher was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell and in his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, reading and crossword puzzles. On March 28, 1952 at the Cooper Baptist Church he married Marilyn Kelly who survives. Also surviving are his children Chris (Anita) Smit of Alfred, ME, Mark (Nancy) Smit of Plainwell, Laurel (Tim) Marsh of Kalamazoo and Lon Smit of Paw Paw; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Lynn (Fred) Yager and a sister-in-law, Judy Smit. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Herman Smit. Private services will be held at a later time. Burial took place at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Rosemary JACOBS AGE 93 – PLAINWELL, MI (formerly of Kalamazoo)

Rosemary passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Plainwell. Mrs. Jacobs was born April 3, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Henry and Frances (Glorioso) Aiuppy. For many years she was employed with WL Molding. In her leisure time her two greatest joys were her plants and her cats. She could grow anything and loved caring for her cats. On May 22, 1948 in Otsego she was married to Charles Jacobs, Jr. who died in 2002. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Charles Aiuppy; a grandson, Lucas; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth. Surviving are two daughters and a son, Geraldine (Don) Frabe of South Haven, Kenneth (Bev) Jacobs of Parchment and Frances ‘Fran’ (Rod) Wall of Leonidas; her grandchildren, Carol, Mike, Brad, Rachael, Kate, Keeley, Chris, Kasie, Robert and Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Austin, Brandon, Grant, Brady, Taeley, Triston, Lola, Devon, Chelsea, Joey and Cody; several brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with Rosemary’s family from 5 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M.
