A Sampling of the Names in the Collection: The Otsego Area Historical Society is pleased to offer for sale individual portrait negatives and prints from the Plainwell and Otsego photographic studios of Joe Sherman, Nick DeVries, Russ Culver, and Cecil Davis. This historic collection of nearly 30,000 portrait sessions covers the years 1935 – 2009, and contains individual and family portraits, weddings, high school senior pictures, and many more!

The collection is now fully indexed thanks to thousands of volunteer hours, and is available online at www.otsegohistory.org (see “Photo Index”). Search for your family name among the thousands of entries. The index contains basic information regarding each portrait session, including date, negative number, and sometimes a brief description. If you find a listing that you’d like to see, simply jot down the negative number and last name, and contact the historical society at oahs@otsegohistory.org, (269)694-4681 or visit the museum on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. Each portrait session is packaged in its original studio envelope. Some envelopes may contain one image, and some may contain multiple images—including forgotten portraits that were not chosen for final printing! Each portrait envelope costs ONLY $12, and the more you purchase, the bigger the discount per envelope. Purchasing an envelope transfers copyright ownership of the contents from the historical society to you and enables you to have reprints made legally. The LYNX Golf Course in Otsego Hosts Special Olympics Golf Outing The LYNX Golf Course has hosted a golf tournament to benefit Special Olympics Michigan yearly since 2014. Dave Porter and his Special Olympian son, Gabe, first suggested being part of this worthy fundraiser. “Dave and Gabe are two very special people to us at the Lynx," owner Jim Szilagyi explains. “They play 4-5 times a week as Gabe loves to play golf. Gabe and Dave play a two person scramble together at night. We have a deal that when Gabe makes a natural birdie he gets a lemonade on us. Some weeks we run low on lemonade." This Sponsor Golf Outing and Special Olympic Skills Competition is a great opportunity for the LYNX to give back while contributing to the community. "The food is very good, the course is in great shape, but it re-

ally is about the Special Olympic Athletes for us," Jim emphasizes. “The shear joy these athletes display when they have a chance to participate and be rewarded for their efforts at the Awards Ceremony is very moving.”

The Lynx had support from local businesses in Allegan, Otsego and Plainwell for their last outing on July 15, 2017. Big and small donations came in for the raffle, golf outing, tee sponsorships and donations. This year over $17,300 was raised with more donations still coming in. In fact, donations are still being accepted. You can make checks payable to Special Olympics - MI and send it to the LYNX and they will forward it to Special Olympics - MI. The local/regional community has contributed more than $30,000 in three years. Jim added, "We are in awe of the

generous contributions by so many and very thankful our community cares as much as it does."

OBITUARIES Everett STONER Jr.

AGE 90 – PLAINWELL, MI Everett passed away Sunday, July 23, 2017 at Vicina Gardens in Otsego. He was born November 17, 1926 in Wetaug, Illinois, to Carl Stoner and Frances DaVault. Everett proudly served his country in the US Army in Vienna, Austria during WWII. He had been a truck driver for Indianhead Truck Lines until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the Teamsters from 1949 until 1985. On May 17, 1947 he married Betty Bennett who passed away June 14, 2017. They had recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Surviving are his children, Janice Double and Steve (Penny) Stoner both of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Jamy Bowman, Jerry Bowe and her children, Morgan Brea and CJ, Gabrial Stoner and his children, Evan and Blake, and Kasey Stroud and her children, Aiden and Audrey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Stoner and Frances Adams and his wife. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. John passed away, Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at his home in Otsego surrounded by his family. He was born April 24, 1934 in Hopkins, the son of John and Cecil (McBride) Syers. He had worked at Mac Sim Bar, Mead and Rock Ten until his retirement. In his spare time John enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, going to the casino, playing bingo, spending time with his family especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. On October 4, 1952 at St. John Lutheran Church in Allegan he married Darlene Roblyer who survives. Also surviving are his children, Mae (Robert) Sousley, Doris Paradine, Mary (Stan) Town, Oney Syers, Glenda (Fay) Brewster, George (Lisa Hazen) Syers, Gail (Rex) Morey and Roy (Gloria) Farnham; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; his sister, Freda Harper along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Justin Syers, granddaughter, Bobby Long, great-grandchildren, Johnathon and Lorenzo Mayfield; son-in-law, Robert Paradine; brothers, Carol and Ray Syers and by his niece, Beth Nicholes. Friends may visit with John’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 P.M. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery at a later time. Contributions in memory of John may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego. Arnold passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017 in Hastings, MI. He was born March 23, 1936 in Bradley, MI, the son of Russell and Leta (Hayward) Boulter. Arnold was a graduate of Western Michigan School of Paper Engineering and had interned at Otsego Machine Shop, had worked at several shops as a tool and die maker and had retired from General Motors. Along with wife of 56 years, Ardith, he had owned and operated Boulters Hardware and Gifts in Otsego for 17 years. Arnold had been a member of the Otsego Fire Department, Timber Ridge ski patrol, Otsego Moose Lodge and Otsego United Methodist Church. In his spare time he enjoyed making cabinets and many homes in the area still have wood floors and cabinets he had made and installed. He had also restored a Chris-Craft boat. Arnold was a skilled woodworker, tool and die maker, problem solver and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was very social and could strike up a conversation with anyone. In September of 2015 he married Kathryn “Kay” Mahler who survives. Also surviving are his children, Kevin (Robin) Boulter of Delton, Kurt (Tammy) Boulter of Plainwell, Brenda (Scott) Try of Portage and Korene (John) VandenBerg of Plainwell; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 more due soon and his siblings, Stewart Boulter of Colorado and Roger Boulter of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ardith. Friends may visit with Arnold’s family from 5-8 P.M., Monday, July 31, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. A private family burial will take place at Prairieville Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Arnold may be made to Otsego United Methodist Church. Years ago a popular bumper sticker read, “We’re spending our children’s inheritance.” We are all familiar with the saying, “You can’t take it with you.” Some leave vast fortunes, some leave little by way of material things, but we all leave something. Jesus talked about storing up “treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew 6:20). Unfortunately, many people think success in life is determined by earthly treasures. According to our definition of success, Jesus was one of history’s greatest failures. He was trained to be a respectable craftsman, but turned His back on it. He never drew a salary, owned a home, earned a degree in higher education or wrote a book. Yet He is considered the greatest person who ever lived. Jesus never condemned material wealth but warned us about allowing money to be our master. Once a rich man died and the community mourned his loss. Someone asked, “How much did he leave?” Another replied, “He left all he had.” We forget this life is a preparation for the next life. When we invest in the kingdom of God, we can be sure we are making a commitment to something of eternal value. As someone remarked, “Serving God is hard work, but the benefits are out of this world!” Over the years I have conducted hundreds of funerals. In sitting down with the family to hear their stories, I cannot recall a single person saying “His or her greatest legacy was accumulating material possessions.” One of the greatest of human needs is to love and be loved. At the end of the day, the greatest gift one can give is the gift of love. Prayer: “Praise be to God … In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you …” I Peter 1:3,4
