Did you know...

A devastating fire destroyed nine businesses on the south side of West Allegan Street in June 1863, including Albert R. Foster’s Drug Store. Foster had the current brick building built in the early 1890s, and since that time it has housed grocery stores, a retail stove business, candy store, coin shop and Bob’s Hardware. Born in 1834, Albert was the youngest son of Otsego’s first settler, Dr. Samuel Foster. His title of doctor reflected his career as a nineteenth century druggist, however, he was more widely known for his frequent encounters with the wrong side of the law. He was known to have sold his illegal home brew and narcotics, and was always game for offending his downtown neighbors by allowing his cows to graze about town or by hanging skunk skins outside his front door. When drunk and rowdy he was given to mounting his horse and galloping up and down the sidewalks causing considerable annoyance and danger to the pedestrians. He was nearly imprisoned for the murder of fellow Otsego resident, Loren Curtis, with whom he had an earlier disagreement. Curtis was shot as he crossed in front of Foster’s building one dark and muggy night in July 1867. Townspeople felt strongly Foster was guilty, but the lack of an eyewitness in the dark of night helped him evade a conviction. Albert R. Foster died in Otsego in 1899.

Let’s talk about freedom. On July 4, 1776, a paper called the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress and we eventually became “the land of the free.” On September 23, l862, Abraham Lincoln read the Emancipation Proclamation which proclaimed liberty for a race of people in America. Another kind of freedom is freedom in Christ. A great fear of the early church was that Christianity would become nothing more than a narrow sect. Addressing that fear, Apostle Paul wrote to believers in Galatia, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1) To those suffering from the bondage of guilt, our Savior offers the freedom of forgiveness. To those suffering from the bondage of fear, our Lord offers the freedom of hope. To those suffering from the bondage of physical suffering, our Great Physician offers the freedom of healing. To believers entering the “valley of the shadow of death” our Lord offers the freedom of eternity. The great British preacher, W.E. Sangster told of going to a zoo. As he was enjoying the sites he came upon an eagle in a cage. He saw the powerful wings and beautiful feathers. As he stood near, someone in the crowd voiced what everyone must have been thinking. “Made for the skies and crammed in a cage.” We were made for freedom. Good News! In Jesus Christ, you can experience freedom in captivity. Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to break out of any prison of the human spirit and find freedom in Jesus Christ. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

Obituaries Leon "Lee" HANEY AGE 88 – PLAINWELL, MI

Lee passed away on the evening of June 24, 2014, at Life Care Center of Plainwell where he had spent the last month of his life. He was the eldest of five children, born September 13, 1925 to Ivan and Hazel (Potter) Haney in Berlemont. He served his country as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Marian Mudget Brenner June 6, 1964. They celebrated their 50th anniversary at a small gathering at Life Care earlier this month. Lee was employed at Consumers Energy's gas distribution for 36 years, first as a pipeline welder and then for 18 years as a supervisor. He enjoyed gardening, golfing, playing cards, fishing and hunting and was always eager to assist with domestic chores and aid to family and friends in need. Lee is survived by his wife, Marian; daughters, Janet (Ron) Cozart; Norma (Enrique) Hope, Cathy (Blair) Bates, Karen Ann Haney; sons, Marvin (Sue) Brenner; Roger Brenner, and Wayne (Ellen) Haney; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Duane, Albert and Jim; his sister, Mary Lou Morris; his daughter, Linda Conklin; and his son, Michael Brenner. Burial took place at Earl Cemetery in Pine Grove Township. A memorial service took place on Wednesday, July 2, at Gun Plain Township Hall from 2-4 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Great Lakes Hospice or Chula Vista Garden Club.

AGE 44 – KALAMAZOO, MI Mark passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014 after a long illness. Mark was born May 31, 1970 in Kalamazoo, the son of Edward and Linda (Boutain) Clark. He was a graduate of Otsego High School and attended college. For many years, he was employed with Prab in Kalamazoo. He enjoyed race cars, motorcycles and fishing. Mark was a hard working father and loved being with his children. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; 3 children, Ryan, Telvin and Quinton; his parents of Otsego; 2 brothers, Michael (Lisa) Clark of Kalamazoo and their son, Brady, Wayne (Jennifer) Clark of Otsego and their children, Samantha and Mitchell. Services were held at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, on Saturday, June 28th, 2014 with Celebrant Laurel Marsh officiating. Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. AGE 78 – PLAINWELL, MI Betty passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014 in Allegan. Betty was born November 21, 1935 in Allegan to Alva and Anna (Babbitt) Hayes. She had worked for Wm. Crispe Hospital for 11 years and then worked for Parker Hannifin for 31 years retiring in 1998. In her leisure time she enjoyed flower gardening, wintering in Florida and playing shuffle board where she had competed in the Master’s Tournament in Palmetto, FL. More than anything she loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On April 21, 1973 she married Birl Sparks who preceded her death in 2013. Surviving are her children, Gail (Floyd) Harmon of Mendon, Gordon (Jackie) Stineback of Otsego and Sandra (Steve) Harmon of Allegan; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; her sister, Peggy (Paul) Boysen of Arkansas. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Birl and her step-father Bill Pearson in 2014. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 1, 2014 with Mr. Mike Risner and Hospice Chaplain Greg Carlson officiating. Burial followed at Oakhill Cemetery, Orangeville. Dawn passed away Monday evening, June 30, 2014 at Kairos Dwelling in Kalamazoo. She was born on January 19, 1951 in Kalamazoo, one of four children to Norman and Gloria (Goodsell) Vliek. Her hobbies included knitting, traveling, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren. On January 2, 1971, she married Edward Bronson, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Todd Bronson of Otsego and Tonya (Trey) Hiemstra of Otsego; five grandchildren, Nicholas Salladay, Kristin Hiemstra, Brittany Hiemstra, Kaitlynn Hiemstra and Macey Hiemstra; sister, Linda (Jim) Hefele of Tucson, AZ; brother, Randy (Mary) Vliek of Vicksburg; sister-in-law, Mary Vliek of Florida; several nieces and nephews; a circle of friends; and her Goff Lake family. Preceding her in death were her parents, Norman and Gloria Vliek and brother, Terry Vliek. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 5,2014, followed by a luncheon at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo.
