job was to offer care and prayer to people who were preparing to meet their Maker I learned so much about god, people, and myself through that challenging experience one of the most profound encounters I had was with a woman whose name, I think, was Joy When I arrived at the hospital for my shift, the nurses told me that I should visit Joy who only had a few days, or perhaps hours, to live I hadn’t met Joy yet and expected her to be distraught and defeated as she neared death I wasn’t prepared for what happened next

When I walked into her room, she was surrounded by her family I m guessing Joy was around 60 years of age the first thing I noticed was a cancerous tumor the size of a football protruding from Joy’s abdomen the pancreatic cancer was consuming Joy’s body the tumor looked so painful, so hideous I looked up from the cancerous tumor to Joy’s face, expected it to be full of fear and pain Instead, Joy’s face bore the countenance of, well, joy! Joy’s radiant, peaceful, and joy-filled face was totally incongruent with her ugly, painful, and life-consuming tumor With her husband, children, and grandchildren around her bed, Joy testified to the peace of Jesus She began to sing some songs of praise to god I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears Joy seemed fearless in the face of death How could that be? Joy had Jesus Joy in pain had joy in pain because she had Jesus by her bedside She firmly believed what Jesus said in John 16:33 “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart I have overcome the world!” Cancer doesn’t have the final word; Christ does!

Richard Rasmussen (Dick), a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp passed away, Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at his home in Otsego, MI, surrounded by his family The son of Ross and Margery (McNair) Rasmussen

He was born March 14 1945 in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Allegan, Michigan Dick graduated from Allegan High School He worked as a Millwright for Rockwell International and Steelcase, displaying his ability to assemble and set up most any machine and maintain equipment

At the ago of 20, Dick enlisted into the Marines, serving most of his time in the Vietnam War He was an active member of the Otsego VFW Post 3030 He liked the camaraderie of the other members and friends he made there He especially enjoyed working in the kitchen during the popular ﬁsh fry events Dick is survived by his daughters, Kristy (Matt) Milbocker and Jill (Al) LeMaire His four grandchildren, Tara LeMaire, Chase Milbocker, Cole Milbocker, and Freddie LeMaire He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Rasmussen According to his wishes cremation has taken place Burial of ashes will be held at 10:30

Nancy Scott passed away, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at Kauhale in Otsego She was born October 24, 1948, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of John and Arlene “Did” (Parker) Kennedy Nancy received her master’s degree in education from Western Michigan University She started her teaching career with the migrant program in Fennville and for 28 years at Gobles Public Schools until her retirement Nancy loved children and encouraged and nurtured many students over the years When she was younger, Nancy enjoyed taking walks She loved being on the farm and driving her tractor On December 19, 1970, in Kalamazoo, she married Kenneth Scott who passed away in 2005 Surviving are her sons, Russell Scott and Jeff (Jennifer) Scott both of Alamo; 4 grandchildren Maddux Kaden Grace and Harper; siblings, John Jr (Beth) Kennedy and Roger Kennedy along with many nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents and husband According to her wishes cremation has taken place Burial of ashes will take place at Trowbridge Cemetery A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held at a later time Contributions in memory of Nancy may be made to Kauhale Assisted Living Activities Fund

Charlie passed away, Friday, June 28, 2024, at Alamo Nursing Home in Alamo Township He was born August 29, 1946, in Kalamazoo, the son of Thomas and Rachel (Barrett) Kinnane Charlie began umpiring when his son started playing t-ball It soon became his life’s passion, and he became an MHSAA registered official and was an official for 35 years His favorite memory during his career was umpiring games played by Derek Jeter Charlie was happiest when watching his grandchildren play sports Later in life Charlie enjoyed playing cards and looked forward to his Thursday card games with his buddies On April 12, 1969, he married Lucille Lang, and they were married for 12 years and shared two sons Surviving are his sons, Chuck (Tera) Kinnane of Plainwell and George (spouse, Tyler Schaefer) Kinnane of Grand Rapids 5 grandchildren Madison Kennedy, McKinley, Kaylynn and Ariana along with many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Patricia Martin, Thomas Kinnane, Michael Kinnane, Katherine Brawner and infant sister, Sharon A funeral service was held Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the Winkel Funeral Home Burial followed at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Charlie may be made to the West Michigan Officials Association or to Alamo Nursing Home Activities Fund
