Did you know...
According to an Otsego Union article, it was during the construction of a hotel in 1835 that the village of Otsego was named, and it all depended on the flip of a copper coin whether the new town would bear its present name or that of Montpelier. Land developer Horace Comstock and owner of the hotel wanted to call the town “Otsego” and Dr. Samuel Foster, one of the earliest settlers, wanted the town to bear the name “Montpelier”. These gentlemen decided to determine the matter by “flipping a copper.” Mr. Comstock won and the name Otsego was first publically proclaimed from the porch of the hotel.

Otsego is also a Native American name meaning "place of the rock". However, an alternative theory is that it is derived from a lake and a county in New York state. This Mohawk Iroquoian word can mean either "clear water" or "meeting place." Montpelier is the French spelling of the name Montpellier, meaning 'Mount of the Pilgrim’.

“CHRISTIAN MATURITY” “The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear …” Mark 4:28 (R.S.V.) As in the plant world, a believer does not become a mature Christian overnight. Christian maturity is a lifelong process, beginning at spiritual birth (John 3:3) continuing throughout our spiritual journey until the time love is made perfect in the heavenly realm (I Corinthians l3:10; Jude 1:24). The word perfect literally means full-grown, adult and complete (as opposed to being petty, childish and immature). Of course, Jesus set the standard for perfection in love (Hebrews 5:9). Thus, we must make love our aim (I Corinthians l4:1 R.S.V.) Apostle Peter talked about growing in the grace, and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). The road to maturity includes at least 3 stages: •The Childish Stage: “Do something for me!” •The Adolescent Stage: “I don’t need your help! I can do it myself!” •The Mature Adult Stage: “Let me do something for you!” Most of our relational problems (political, international, family, church, etc.) could be easily solved if persons would act in mature ways. We can choose to be mature. Consider these options:
•In work – instead of asking, “How does this benefit me?” try asking “How can we work together for the benefit of all?” •In marriage – instead of asking, “What can you do for me?” try asking “What can I do for you?” •In going to church – Instead of asking “What’s in it for me?” try asking “How can I serve?” •In prayer – Instead of praying “Lord, give me” try praying “Lord, use me.”
What might happen if we took our love for God to the next level? Prayer: Dear Lord, I choose to be more like You. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. . Happy 16th Birthday to Jacob Starr on August 21
