Some years ago a story circulated about the Pope. It seems he had an important speech to give at the United Nations. As he was being chauffeured in a black limousine he began to feel anxious about arriving on time … so he told the driver to “step on it!” The driver “stepped on it” and they got pulled over by a police officer. Seeing the Pope in the back seat, the police officer chose not to give the driver a ticket. They continued their journey. It seemed like they hit every stop light and it slowed them down. The Pope again got anxious and again said to the driver, “step on it!” The driver responded, “Hey, I have a wife and kids, I already have too many points and if I get another, they may take my license from me.” Feeling even more anxious, the Pope said, “Pull over! You get in the back seat and I’ll drive!” Seeing that he was going to be late, the Pope got behind the wheel and off they went “lickety cut.” You guessed it; they got pulled over again by another police officer. The police officer took one look at the driver and went back to his police car, got on his phone and talked to the captain. “Captain, you won’t believe who I just pulled over for speeding. And I don’t know what to do about it.” The captain replied, “Officer, who did you pull over this time? A congressman? The city mayor? The captain said, “Well… who did you pull over this time?” The officer replied, “I don’t know, but whoever he is, he has the Pope driving for him!” This silly story raises an important question: Who is in control of your life? From the time of our childhood, we learn the meaning of authority. The role of authority begins with our parents and follows us throughout our lives. Authority takes on various forms including the fields of education, business, law enforcement, government, politics and religion. “Firstborn” (Colossians l:l5) means God has authority over “heaven and earth, things visible and invisible, thrones, powers and rulers” (Colossians l: l6). Jesus has authority to bestow life (John 5:21), to satisfy the hungry (John 6:35), to forgive sins (Mark 2:10), to heal the sick (Mark 2:11), to raise the dead (John 11:25), to teach the truth (Matthew 7:28,29), to speak the truth (John 7:46); to command obedience (John l5:14), to lift human burdens (Matthew 11:28-30), to make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), to judge the world (Matthew 25:31-40, John 5:27) and to intercede for us in heavenly places (Hebrews 4:14). What this means is that each day we get to decide what or who will rule our lives. Money or the Master? Selfish desires or selfless service? Personal attention or Godly affection? Instant gratification or eternal glory? Take-away: Life works better when we allow Jesus Christ to be in the driver’s seat of our lives.

AGE 96 – ALAMO TOWNSHIP, MI Vawn passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born January 7, 1921 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Charles and Hettie (Hoodemaker) Campbell. Vawn had worked at the Kalamazoo Country Club as a waitress. As a young girl she enjoyed trips to the family cottage at Baseline Lake with her mother. In her spare time she liked knitting, crocheting, bowling, fishing, dancing, playing cards, summers at Baseline Lake, spending the winters in Florida and golfing in area leagues until she was 93. Most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. On May 24, 1940 she married Edward Drobny who passed away in 2000. Surviving are her children, Veronica (Ken) Crowell and Gary (Harriette) Drobny; daughter-in-law, Jacque Drobny; 6 grandchildren, Chad, Christy, Marni, Matthew, Jason and Steven; 9 greatgrandchildren, Morgan, Carly, Chase, Erica, Abigail, Emma, Carly, Evan and Landon; great-great-granddaughter, Amelia and niece and nephews, Malcolm, David and Sharon. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Charles Drobny in 2003 and siblings, Dwight Campbell, Virginia Miles and an infant sister. Friends may visit with Vawn’s family from 5-7 P.M., Friday, August 18, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 19, 2017 with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Judyth K. TIMMERMAN AGE 77 – KALAMAZOO, MI

Judy went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 14, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center. She was born September 30, 1939 in Kalamazoo the daughter of Sam and Jacoba (Bergler) Adams. Judy was a 1957 Kalamazoo Christian High School graduate. She had worked as an office manager at Western Michigan University until her retirement. Judy was very athletic and in the 1950’s had played Jr. Lassies baseball, she also enjoyed bowling, golfing, softball and had umpired many little league games. Judy loved babies especially her grandchildren and liked spending time with her family. She was an active member of Centerpoint Church of Kalamazoo. On September 18, 1959 she married Glenn Timmerman who survives. Also surviving are her children, Jeff (Beth) Timmerman of Kalamazoo and Jodie (Cory) Evans of South Carolina; grandchildren, Erin (Ian) Vargo, Jenna (Michael) Coyle, Kyle Timmerman, Andrew Timmerman and Bohdan Evans; 2 great-grandchildren and her sister, Sharon Overbeek. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jack and Duane. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 17, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Darwin VanderWal officiated. Burial followed at Alamo Center Cemetery in Alamo Township. Contributions in memory of Judy may be made to the American Cancer Society. Eudora passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Life Care Center in Plainwell. She was born August 29, 1925 in Dunkirk, Ohio the daughter of Desmer and Cora (Gilliam) Conrad. For 17 years she had worked at Parker Hannifin. In her spare time she enjoyed going to flea markets, reading, sewing, dancing and working in her yard. Eudora was a member of the Eagles. Surviving are her children, Charles Smith, Shari Smith-Dortch, Elva SmithChambless, Harriett Smith-Drobny, Richard Smith, Jeannie Roebuck and Carl Dortch; 30 grandchildren; many great and great-greatgrandchildren and niece, Judy Vanderslik. She was preceded in death by her parents, children, Sherriann Dortch, Sara Zupanic, James Baker and Russell Smith and her sister, Lenora. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Ray Brown officiated. Burial of ashes took place at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego. Bob passed away on August 14, 2017 at Stanford Lodge. Bob was born on February 25, 1921 to Charles & Hazel (Pallett) Arehart. Bob served his country proudly in the Army during WWII. Bob’s family includes his children: David Arehart and Janis (Rick) Katje; 5 grandchildren: Patric Arehart, Kristen (James) Wheaton, Kyle (Rachel) Katje, Kurt (Patty) Katje and Keith (Nichole) Katje; 7 great grandchildren: Brittany, Madison, Kenyon, Kaylee, Kolton, Jack and Owen; 1 great great grandson: Liam as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years EvaJune; siblings: Esther Fleming, Helen Teders, Lewis Arehart, Velma Hicks, Carl Arehart, John Arehart and MaryJean Arehart. Cathy passed away Friday evening, August 11, 2017 at her home in Otsego, MI after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born July 31, 1959 in Plainwell, MI to Ralph and Margaret (Peggy) Rutledge Like. Cathy was the baby of the family, growing up with two older sisters. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Cathy was an avid collector of owls. If it had an owl on it or looked like one she wanted it. She loved tending and growing beautiful flowers around her home. She worked in the Plainwell and Otsego area most of her life. She is survived by her longtime partner and best friend Brian VanderBosch. Her three daughters: Joey Bigham, Jaime Bigham & Jessica Bigham-Sheridan. Nine grandchildren: Jacob, Jaycee, Skyler and Tyler Layne, Makayla and Alex Vercruysse, Audria Jordan and Natasha Therkildsen and William Bigham. Sisters: Christine Hale and Louise Dyer. Many nieces and nephews and friends that she loved like family. She was preceded in death by her parents and niece Sheila Hudon. Cremation has taken place and a graveside memorial will be announced at a later date.

Jeff passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2017 in Ann Arbor. He was born March 28, 1964 in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Robert and Martha (Coffee) Novotny. For 25 years Jeff had worked at Stryker Instruments in Kalamazoo. Jeff was a super hero movie fanatic and in his spare time enjoyed riding dune buggies at Silver Lake and tinkering in his garage. Surviving are his children, Phillip (Erinn Routh) Novotny and Alecia Novotny both of Otsego; grandchildren, Leroy, Kolby and Dakota; his mother; sister, Kristy (Chuck) Cushman of Plainwell and niece and nephews, Chase, Emma and Carter Cushman. He was preceded in death by his father and grandson, Andrew Novotny in 2007. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 21, 2017 at At the Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry in Otsego with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.
