Walkers with a minimum pledge of $25 will be entered into the "poker walk." They will pick up 7 playing cards along the walk and the best hands will be awarded prizes. "All proceeds from the walk will go to the Plainwell Arts Council's Public Art Procurement Program," according to Cathy Green, Arts Council Treasurer. "We have our inaugural project, a sculpture at the mill entry plaza underway. Next year, we are going to commission a building mural, and more sculpture."

There is nothing more beautiful than to see a person age gracefully. Dr. Frank Caprio said, “Growing old is a matter of attitude, not arteries… we keep young by keeping our thoughts young. The body will gradually age… but what does it matter if the spirit is young?” (Living in the Balance, Arundel Press, l951 [page 200]. A well-known gerontologist says, because of the popularity of physical exercise, many are growing stronger with age, leading many to ask “Can 70 be the new 50?” Astronaut John Glenn returned to space in his late 70s. President George H. Bush skydived on his 85th birthday and plans to do it again on his 90th birthday. This leads me tell you about an amazing person. She is typical of the adage “age is a state of mind.” She doesn’t jump out of airplanes but she has ridden on a motorcycle! She rises early in the morning to bake goodies for her family and friends, drives her friends to doctor appointments, shoots baskets with her great grandsons, climbs the bleachers to watch her great grandchildren play basketball, carries her own lawn chair, coat and blanket to all sporting events, is active in her church and a volunteer in the community. She walked a mile a day until her doctor told her to stop walking alone. Her calendar is full. If you want to see her, you have to call for an appointment. She never passes up an opportunity to go somewhere. Who is this amazing woman? Happy Birthday to June Starr (August 25). I won’t tell you her age.
