“THE BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE”

“When Jesus noticed how the guests sought out the best seats at the table, he told them a parable …” Luke l4:7 When it comes to Sunday worship (as with other events) people tend to have a favorite place to sit and there is that old adage which reads “Come early if you want a back row seat!” One Sabbath Jesus was a meal guest of a prominent Pharisee (VIP- Very Important Person). He noticed how other guests (also VIPS) rushed to the table, not so much for the food, but for places of honor at the table. In Eastern culture, hospitality was a much desired social virtue. The Talmud (early Jewish civil and religious law) had a certain protocol which dictated where people sat and in what order. The uppermost seat was reserved for the most distinguished guest. When the scramble for seats ended, the host was embarrassed to discover the main Guest of Honor had taken the lowest seat. Jesus used the occasion to point out one important truth: “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke l4:11). The Kingdom of God is not about position; it is about having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; it is not about honor; it is about humility. It is not about self-importance; it is about being God’s servant people. Mother Teresa said it well, “The fruit of love is service.” Jesus said it best, “the first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark l0:31). Thus, the best seat in the house is the seat of service. Prayer: Lord, please reserve for me the best seat in the house this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. In Jesus’ name. Amen

QUALIFYING INCOME LIMIT TO DEFER SUMMER PROPERTY TAXES MODIFIED Change impacts senior citizens, veterans and persons with disabilities

The Michigan General Property Tax Act has been amended to allow certain citizens, including senior citizens, veterans, and persons with disabilities to defer their summer property taxes if they have a household income below $40,000.

To qualify for the deferment under the new qualifying income limit, a resident must meet one or more of the following conditions as defined by the State Income Tax Act: • Is a totally and permanently disabled person, blind person, paraplegic, quadriplegic, eligible service person, eligible veteran, or eligible widow or widower. • Is 62 years of age or older, including the unremarried surviving spouse of a person who was 62/or older at time of death.

Residents who believe they qualify under the new limit and wish to defer their summer property taxes can obtain an Application for Deferment of Summer Taxes from the treasurer of their local property tax collecting unit. Collection of the approved deferred taxes will be delayed until winter taxes are due.

Edwin ‘Ed’ BILETH AGE 82 - OTSEGO, MI

Ed passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at his home. Mr. Bileth was born March 31, 1932 in Grand Rapids. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Ed worked for 30 years for General Motors retiring in 1995. Surviving are his children, Ron (Linda) Cook, Ron (Gloria) Wheaton, Jim Wheaton, Linette Russell; his grandchildren, Mike Menck, Tim (Becky) Menck, Jimmy (Kristian) Wheaton, Dave (Carol) Barber, Jorge (Heather) Vazquez, Kimberly Wheaton, Lindsey Russell, Timmy Beebe; 9 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Dolores Bileth and 3 brothers. A private family burial will take place later at Miner Cemetery. Pat passed away, Tuesday, July 29, 2014 in Kalamazoo. Pat was born September 8, 1933 in Alamo Township, the daughter of Alberian and Gladys (Abraham) Stephens. She enjoyed reading, watching old movies, collecting antiques and decorative painting. On June 4, 1953 in Otsego, Pat married Lenard Kling who preceded her in death in 2011. She is survived by her sons, Lenard Kling Jr. and Kevin (Shelley) Kling both of Otsego; 2 granddaughters, Amanda (Wayne) Vandenburg and Randi (Joe Gauthier) Kling; her sisters-in-law, Caroline Kling, Irene Haas, Glenda Kling and Shirley Kling a brother-in-law, Richard (Ann) Kling; several nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her siblings, Al (Doris) Stephens and Rose Stephens. Services will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 1:00 P.M., at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Pastor Mark Minegar officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Home Cemetery Otsego. Frederick T. CAMPBELL AGE 91 – OTSEGO, MI

Fred passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at his home in Otsego. Fred was born May 5, 1923 in Woodsfield, Ohio to Ralph and Louise (Barry) Campbell. He served his country in the US Army and met the love of his life Gilda Berardi while on a two day leave with her brother Tony. They were married April 24, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA spending 68 years together until her passing in February 2014. Fred was employed with the MEAD Corporation as a production worker until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, Otsego V.F.W. Post #3030. In his leisure time he loved hunting & fishing, watching westerns, listening to country music and word search books. He and Gilda had traveled to all 48 lower states and had volunteered for the Otsego Library. Surviving are his children, George “Andy” Campbell, Anna Schulz, Diana Campbell, Thomas (Jan) Campbell and David (Arlene) Campbell; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Virginia, Sue and Pete. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife; great-granddaughter, Breanna; Friends may visit with Fred’s family on Monday, Aug. 4 from 6-8 P.M. at

Joan passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 in Martin. Joan was born April 19, 1931 in Plainwell the daughter of Allert and Myrtle (Grinage) DeMann. Joan had been employed at Allegan Public Schools as a payroll clerk retiring in 1992. In her leisure time she enjoyed golfing, knitting, playing cards, watching her grandkids play sports, traveling, puzzle books and bowling. On March 30, 1951 at the DeMann Family farm in Martin she married Myron Knight who survives. Also surviving are her sons, Dennis (Kathy) Knight, Duane (Deb) Knight; daughter-in-law, Marie Knight; 13 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; her sister, Bonnie (David) Colvin and a brother, Ronald (Sharon) DeMann. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son Don Knight. A Funeral Service took place Wednesday, July 30th at the Watson Bible Church. Pastor James Collison officiated. Theodore passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Ted was born February 4, 1965 in Kalamazoo the son of James and Maxine (Wilkinson) Simonds. He had done lawn care as the owner/operator of Bill & Ted’s Lawn Care and had worked several other jobs in the area, most recently working for Gary Sanders Well Drilling. Ted enjoyed trains, traveling to the lake for sunsets and spending time fishing. He will be remembered as a kind hearted man who loved his family. Surviving are his father, James; his siblings, Dale (Lucy) Simonds of Allegan, Ralph (Ruth) Simonds of Allegan, LaVerne (Joyce) Simonds of Mattawan and Michael (Deborah) Simonds of Otsego; several nieces and nephews; and his soul mate Sue Miner. He was preceded in death by his mother and by his best friend Bill Miner. Cremation has taken place. AGE 94 – PLAINWELL, MI Leona passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 in Plainwell. Leona was born September 8, 1919 in Gobles to Erwin and Lura (Turner) Kelly. She graduated from Gobles High School in 1937 as Valedictorian of her class and then attended Parsons Business College in Kalamazoo. Leona worked at Burroughs Manufacturing/LSI in Kalamazoo retiring after 27 years. She was member of PSI (Professional Secretaries International) and was Secretary of the Year in 1984. On August 20, 1939, in Gobles she was married to James L. Smith who preceded her death in 2011. They were married almost 72 years. Leona was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gobles where she played piano. For the past several years she was a member of the Otsego United Methodist Church where she was especially active with the making of the famous Apple Dumplings. She was an Avid Detroit Tigers fan; enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading, putting puzzles together, playing cards and canning fruits and vegetables; and especially loved to do embroidery making special gifts for all her children. Leona was a farmer’s wife which placed her on the tractor in the fields and also cooking meals for farm hands for several years. She lived on their farm until 2012 when she moved to Stanford Lodge. Surviving are three daughters, Janet (Bob) Cushman and Carol (Donald) VerHage and Shirley Hayse, all of Otsego; a daughter-in-law, Roxie Smith of Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Marion VanStrein and Erwin (Betty) Kelly. Leona was preceded in death by her son, Larry Smith; and a son-in-law, Daniel Hayse; and a brother Bernith Kelly. In keeping with her wishes cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Leona’s family from 6-8 P.M. Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will take place Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11:00 A.M., Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. AGE 87 - PLAINWELL Phillip passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at home. Phillip was born August 23, 1926 in Kalamazoo to Eby and Viola (Phelps) Rowe. He was lovingly known as “Charlie”, “Uncle Charlie” and “Chuckles”. He loved people by visiting with neighbors and friends and having company. Phillip enjoyed being busy helping people do chores and odd jobs. He liked country music, polkas and strumming of his guitar, playing baseball and basketball and loved tractor rides. Surviving are his sister Virginia; 4 nieces and 4 nephews; many great nieces, nephews and cousins; especially a special great niece Melissa; his buddies, Marlin, Wilson, Quinton and Tim. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Margaret and brother Robert. Cremation has taken place.
