The Bible speaks of at least four kinds of burdens:

• The Ultimate Burden. “He himself bore our sins in his body on a tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed” – I Peter 2:24 (NIV) • The Burdens We Share. “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” – Galatians 6:2

• The Burdens We Bear. “For each one should carry his own load” – Galatians 6:5

• The Burdens We Must Give to God. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” – I Peter 5:7

Let’s talk about number four (The burdens we must give to God). The Knox translation reads “Throw back on him the burden of all your anxiety for he is concerned for you.” God has promised to hear every thought, every prayer, every problem, every hurt and every concern. God knows that the burdens of life are too heavy for us to carry alone. He wants to help us. It is easy enough to take our burdens to the Lord. The question is why do we keep taking them back? Prayer: Dear Lord, give me the courage to take my burdens to You and not take them back. In Jesus’ name. Amen. 161st Allegan County Fair Sept. 6th-14th Skerbeck Brothers Shows announces a NEW RIDE AND FUN HOUSE for the 161st Allegan County Fair Sept 6th-14th, 2013. Thrill seekers will be excited by the company’s newest spectacular ride, the Twin Flip. The Twin Flip is manufactured in Italy, and boasts an impressive European design and ride action. The ride consists of twin-arm structures that rotate around its vertical axis. The end of each of the arms contains a group of four gondolas which rotate around each arm, and each gondola rotates freely. The ride carries up to 32 passengers at a time, and passengers are snugly attached to their seats by overhead, roller coaster-style restraints. The Twin Flip is a massive portable ride that requires two trucks and trailers to transport to events. This ride provides a very intense experience. Music and strobe lights add to the effect. The ride is really popular with teens - they line up for it!

ELEPHANT ENCOUNTER An educational and entertaining experience for the entire family. Audiences are guided through an up close and personal encounter with the world's largest land animals. There is no place where people can see elephants like they can during the Elephant Encounter Program. People are inspired as they experience the full force of each elephant's unique, individual personality. This unique program provides audiences with an education on Asian and African elephants. The program features Cora, an Asian elephant, weighing around 9,000 pounds and Shannon an African elephant weighing 6,500 pounds. The elephants will dazzle you with their talents.

PARADE MARSHAL We are pleased to announce our 2013 Allegan County Fair Parade Marshal will be Phyllis Drozd! After serving almost 50 years on the AAESA Board (joining in 1965) and becoming President in 1977, Phyllis recently retired from the AAESA Board. DELANO BARN ROOF While you are enjoying the livestock this year you may want to check out the new roof on the Delano Barn. This came about suddenly as one of Michigan’s winter storms tore approximately 200 ft of the cap off of the barn roof last January. The roof is 126' wide x 228' long. Dave Joostberns had the new steel roof back on in no time. The barn will be a lot cooler for the animals this year with 100' of ridge vents and steel reflecting the sun. The Delano Barn is the Allegan County Fair’s largest barn.

Paul passed away Friday, August 23, 2013. Paul was born December 18, 1949 in Kalamazoo to Robert and Louwina (Dykehouse) Petersen. Paul had been employed with Meijer for 30 years and with Parker-Hannifin for 15 years. Paul enjoyed golfing, his dog and tinkering. He loved being with his family, friends and especially his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife Ann Marie (Gilligan) Petersen; a daughter, Sheila (Mike) Howard of Quakertown, PA, a son, Todd Petersen of Plainwell; 4 grandchildren, Jacob, Ryan, Samantha and Tim; 4 brothers, Russ (Genevieve) Dykehouse of New Mexico, Robert (Georgia) Petersen of Kalamazoo, Dave (Kathi) Petersen of Kalamazoo, Dennis (Karen) Petersen of Vicksburg; brother-in-law, Jim (Carleen) Gilligan of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Bernie and Deb Deaton, Glenn and Kim Merica and countless other friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial visitation was held Wednesday, August 28th at the

George passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013, at his home. Mr. Pearson was born December 4, 1919, in Plainwell to Arnold and Anna (Dewispelaere) Pearson and was a lifelong resident of the area. In 1937 he graduated from Plainwell High School. For many years George and his brothers owned and operated Pearson and Sons Marathon in Plainwell. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening, fishing, bowling and was an avid Plainwell football fan. On July 9, 1949, in Otsego he married Hazel Keene, who passed away in February. Also preceding him in death were a daughter-in-law, Kelene Pearson; four brothers, Jack, Joe, Jim and Arnie Pearson; and a sister, Shirley Hileski. Surviving are seven children, Michael (Patricia) Pearson of Otsego, James (Janet) Pearson, Kathleen Loughead, George Pearson, Jr. and David (Jenann) Pearson, all of Plainwell, Lisa (Paul) Pearson of Kalamazoo and Mark Pearson of Plainwell; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 30, 2013 at St. Margaret Church, Otsego, Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley and Rev. Fr. Don Klingler Celebrants. Roger W. BRENNER AGE 63 – OTSEGO, MI

Roger passed away Monday, August 26, 2013, in Kalamazoo. Mr. Brenner was born March 1, 1950 in Plainwell to Paul and Marian (Zienstra) Brenner and was a lifelong resident of the area. During the Vietnam War he served his country in the U.S. Army. For over 30 years he was employed with Lifesavers Candy in Holland, retiring when the company closed. In his leisure time he enjoyed gardening and watching sports, especially the Lions and Tigers, and going to Las Vegas and other casino trips. Roger had coached several of his sons’ baseball and basketball teams. On September 29, 1973 he married Becky Morgan, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Chad (Dawn) Brenner of Allegan and Jason Brenner of Otsego; two grandchildren, Hayley and Donavan; three siblings, Pauline Hines of Georgia, Maynard (Jenny) Brenner of Wayland and Karen Shea of Plainwell; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may visit with Roger’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, August 30 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 31, 2013, Bill Rose celebrant. Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego, with Military Honors by V.F.W. Post #3030. Zofia passed away Friday, August 23, 2013, in Bartlett, IL. Mrs. Maruniak was born March 19, 1929, in Drochobycz, Poland to Tadeusz and Jozefa (Szandrowska) Slotwinski. Zofia was a devoted homemaker, a humanist, and a nature and animal lover. She attended St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading and playing the piano. On August 14, 1949, in Szymbark, Poland, she married Adam Maruniak who passed away in 1992. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Lidia Maruniak in 1992 and Barbara Magiera in 2010; and a brother, Zbigniew Slotwinski in 2008. Surviving are a daughter, Teresa (Juan) Ramos of Bartlett, IL; two grandsons, Brian and Alex Ramos; and a son-in-law, Andrew Magiera of Richland. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Rev. Fr. Brian Stanley officiated. Cremation took place. AGE 95 – SONORA, CA

Alice passed away Monday, July 14, 2013 in Sonora, CA at the home of her son, Dr. Russell Hoenes Jr. Alice was born in Marshall, Michigan on February 28, 1918 to Ethel Hoodemaker Carpenter and J.R. Carpenter. She graduated from Marshall High School and married the love of her life, Russell (Pete) Hoenes in February 1937. She and Russell lived in the Kalamazoo and Otsego area and raised two children, Judy Hoenes Thorburn and Russell Hoenes Jr. Alice returned to college once her children were in school and graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Kalamazoo while completing her Master’s degree in Social Work. She then worked as a social worker in the Kalamazoo Schools until retirement. After retiring, she worked with the Adventist Community Center in Otsego as manager, continuing her lifelong mission to assist those in need. Alice devoted her life to caring for others and providing support leading to growth and self-sufficiency. She offered her home, books to read, food, and anything else needed to help people be independent and feel loved. Alice is survived by her daughter Judy Thorburn and Judy’s husband Andy, her granddaughter Ann Stewart McBee and Ann’s husband Dan, her grandson Gary Stewart Jr. and Gary’s wife Anne, her great-grandson Jameson, her son Russell Hoenes Jr. and Russell’s wife Sally, her grandson Greg Hoenes and Greg’s wife Jill, her great-grandson Brennan, her granddaughter Kari and Kari’s husband Pete Quijada, her great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Reilly, and Reese Todo, her granddaughter Marci and Marci’s husband Dave Hutson and her great-grandchildren Noah and Juliet. Alice enjoyed living in the country and being a partner to her husband Russell, who loved the earth and grew corn, watermelon, raspberries and other fruits and vegetables for her to can, freeze and share with her family. Alice loved the company of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and her extended family and their children. After retirement she continued with her church to serve the community. Alice enjoyed crafts, such as making Christmas ornaments with beads or dough, and spent her later years happily watching old movies with her grandkids. She never ceased working to support and give her love to those around her. She was very much loved by all who knew her, young and old, and she will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at the Otsego Seventh Day Adventist Church 216 S. Farmer St., Otsego, Michigan on September 21 at 3:00 PM
