A Sampling of the Names in the Collection: The Otsego Area Historical Society is pleased to offer for sale individual portrait negatives and prints from the Plainwell and Otsego photographic studios of Joe Sherman, Nick DeVries, Russ Culver, and Cecil Davis. This historic collection of nearly 30,000 portrait sessions covers the years 1935 – 2009, and contains individual and family portraits, weddings, high school senior pictures, and many more!

The collection is now fully indexed thanks to thousands of volunteer hours, and is available online at www.otsegohistory.org (see “Photo Index”). Search for your family name among the thousands of entries. The index contains basic information regarding each portrait session, including date, negative number, and sometimes a brief description. If you find a listing that you’d like to see, simply jot down the negative number and last name, and contact the historical society at oahs@otsegohistory.org, (269)694-4681 or visit the museum on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. Each portrait session is packaged in its original studio envelope. Some envelopes may contain one image, and some may contain multiple images—including forgotten portraits that were not chosen for final printing! Each portrait envelope costs ONLY $12, and the more you purchase, the bigger the discount per envelope. Purchasing an envelope transfers copyright ownership of the contents from the historical society to you and enables you to have reprints made legally. The historical society can also provide your purchased images scanned onto a CD for your convenience.

“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully …” - I Corinthians 13:12 Some things are hard to understand. When we lose a loved one, especially suddenly, unexpectedly, tragically or at a tender age, we are often left with questions we cannot answer. Perhaps we are not spiritually equipped to know why. In Deuteronomy 29:29 we read, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God …” The psalmist quoted God as saying, “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9). How do we explain the unexplainable? Over the years of listening to bereaved families, the most common remark I hear is, “I don’t know how anyone can face such a loss without Jesus Christ.” A man who suffered terminal illness remarked, “The Lord has been with me all of my life, He is not going to leave me now.” Our only hope is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (John 11:25, 26) Therefore, there are some things believers can be sure of: •We never walk alone. (Matthew 28:20) •Jesus is our primary source of comfort (Matthew 5:4) •Jesus weeps with us. (John 11:35) •Jesus understands our sorrow. (Isaiah 53:3) •Because He lives, we shall live also. (John 14:19) •His resurrection is our only hope for eternal life. (I Corinthians l5:13,14) •Our loved ones are in a safe place. (John 14:1,2) •We shall meet our loved ones again. (I Thessalonians 4:17)

Allie passed away July 25, 2017 at Allegan General Hospital. Allie was born August 9, 1921 in Wayland; the son of Allie S. and Cecil (Ogden) Watkins. A veteran, Allie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Allie was also a Kalamazoo Police Officer and he was a millwright and a loyal employee of Allied Paper Corporation for many years. Allie was a resident of the William Crispe Community House for the last six years. He loved working on and building cars. Allie married the love of his life, the former Lois Randel and together they had five children. Allie is survived by his children: Barb (Kerry) Simonton of Parchment, Bob (Dodi) Watkins of Mattawan, Allie S. (Evie) Watkins III of Plainwell, and Kathy Fenstemaker of California, eight grandchildren, and eighteen great-grandchildren. Allie was preceded in death by his parents, and a daughter: Connie. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions to William Crispe Community House, Plainwell will be appreciated. Kyle passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at his home in Paw Paw. He was born September 27, 1986 in Kalamazoo the son of Larry and Denise (Cadman) Button. Kyle was a 2005 Gobles High School graduate and went on to complete the Van Buren County Fire Academy and was a volunteer fireman for several years. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, traveling and playing disc golf. Kyle was very competitive and loved playing on the Tuesday night softball league with his friends. On August 17, 2014 he married LeAnn Haveman who survives. Also surviving are his mother, Denise Button of Allegan; siblings, Rory (Laura LaMore) Button of Battle Creek and Chris (Megan) Button of Kalamazoo; his grandfather, Cliff of Portage along with many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral services were held Thursday, August 3, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego Celebrant Bill Rose officiated. Burial of ashes will take place at Hudson Corner’s Cemetery. AGE 93 – PLAINWELL, MI “You reap what you sow,” and Ada reaped a wonderful life from what she sowed to her family and friends during her time on this earth. Ada passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Plainwell, Monday, July 3, 2017. She was born October 25, 1923 in Plainwell, the daughter of Dorr and Pearl Oliver. She retired from Parker Hannifin. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, yard-work, and caring for her family. She was married to Frank Ernst, who preceded her in death in 2000. Sister, Clarabelle Nifong, and son-in-law, Albert Lawrie, also preceded her in death. Surviving are her son, Douglas (Kathe) Ernst; daughter, Jean Lawrie; grandson, Brian (Jenny) Ernst; granddaughter Michele White; and four greatgrandchildren, Abby and Kelsey Ernst and Tyler and Trenton White. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Burial of ashes will be at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell, MI, at a later time. Contributions in Ada’s name may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice.

David F. MARSAC AGE 82 – DELTON, MI

David passed away July 28, 2017 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born November 23, 1934 in Oxford, Michigan the son of Clifford and Ruth (Swann) Marsac. He served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. For many years he had worked for Consumers Energy and then General Motors until his retirement. In his spare time David enjoyed golfing on area leagues, even hitting a hole in one, he belonged to the quilting group at the Gun Lake Community Church, and he enjoyed exercising, playing cards, bird watching and traveling across the US and overseas. He was a member of the American Legion of Dorr. David was a people person and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. On July 19, 1993 he married Jeannie Lawler who survives. Also surviving are his children, Fred (Debi) Marsac of Clarkston and Janet (Brian) Sinclair of Grand Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Daniel (Karine), Kara (Matt), Ben and Hannah; great-granddaughter, Leilani; siblings, Yvonne Marsac and Joe Marsac along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Neal and John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, August 4, 2017 at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego with Rev. Fr. Simon Manjooran officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell. Military Honors by the American Legion of Dorr. John R. HOLCOM AGE 92 – OTSEGO, MI

John passed away Friday, July 28, 2017 at Diana’s Care in Otsego. He was born June 30, 1925 in Leroy, MI the son of Russell and Beulah (Strine) Holcom. John proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII. For many years he had been a mechanic at Clark Equipment in Battle Creek until his retirement in 1986. John enjoyed his retirement working in his shop at home doing wood work. Over the years he had made several musical instruments and pieces of furniture for his family and friends. He also enjoyed working in his yard and garden. John was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Otsego. On May 7, 1949 at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Tustin, MI he married Margaret Fauble who passed away in 2013. Surviving are his children, Carol Rose of Plainwell, John (Deb) Holcom of Tifton, GA and Marcia (Dale) Working of Kalamazoo; 5 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Ronald (Kathy) Holcom and siblings, Robert, Elwood and Ronald Holcom and Louella Briggs. Funeral services were held, Monday, July 31, 2017 at Peace Lutheran Church in Otsego. Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann officiated. Cremation followed. James I. CRONKHITE AGE 88 – OTSEGO, MI

James went home to be with his Lord on Monday, July 31, 2017. A life is lived between the dashes. Born February 1, 1929 in a house in Allegan, James Ivan Cronkhite lived a good life. He was a soft spoken man who saw the value of his family as his purpose in life. Married in 1950 to Joyce Elaine Merchant, the couple lost their first born child to stillbirth. They went on to have four more children. James modeled for his children a good work ethic. When times were hard he held down several jobs at one time. He retired from Rock-Tenn in Otsego after forty-six years in the paper industry. When called to duty, he served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. Along with being a car enthusiast and avid bowler, Jim loved horses and collecting memorabilia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a member of Allegan Wesleyan Church and was baptized as a sign of his faith. He will be truly missed but left a legacy of love through the people who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father Ivan Cronkhite, mother Elsie (Morris) Cronkhite (Berry), infant daughter and sister Donna Walters. Surviving are his wife of sixty-seven years, Joyce E. (Merchant) Cronkhite, brother Eugene Cronkhite of Otsego, son James I. Cronkhite Jr. (Jean) of Otsego, daughter Patricia Weiss (Ken) of Ft. Wayne, IN, daughter Denise Atwood (Robert Dejong) of Otsego, son Kenneth Cronkhite of Otsego, twelve grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and two of his beloved cats Andy and Suzie. At James’ request there has been a cremation and no public service will take place. The family would wish that any donations or acts of love be expressed with contributions to Hospice Wings of Hope, Allegan, MI in James’ name.
