Drivers, Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Tips • Look out for and always yield the right-of-way to people walking, jogging, biking, etc.; • Pull out slowly from driveways and parking areas while watching for vulnerable road users, including children and others on the sidewalk or nearby pathways; • Stop fully before turning at driveways and intersections to make sure you do not cut off pedestrians or approaching bicyclists with right of way; • Never turn right immediately after passing a cyclist - wait until the cyclist has completed the trip through the intersection; • Do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks, as they may be allowing a pedestrian to cross the street; • Yield to anyone crossing the street when turning left on a green light; • Watch for surprising changes in direction, especially by children or cyclists avoiding road hazards. • When parallel parked, check for approaching cyclists before opening your door; • Leave sufficient space when passing vulnerable road users and take every possible precaution to avoid collision.

Pedestrians are reminded to:

• Try to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them and do not assume that because you can see the driver, the driver can see you; • Watch for cars that are turning or backing up; • Be vigilant in parking lots, especially when accompanying small children; • Increase visibility at night by carrying a flashlight when walking and by wearing light-colored or reflective clothing that highlights body movements.

Bicyclists should: • Always ride WITH other traffic; • Obey the rules of the road as any other vehicle operator, including all traffic signs, lane markings and signals, and use hand signals to indicate turns, slowing or stopping; • Wear bicycle helmets and reflective clothing; • Stay as far to the right as practical when riding in traffic lanes; • Not ride more than two abreast in a single lane, so long as it does not interfere with the normal flow of vehicular traffic; • Avoid entering the roadway without first stopping to look for vehicles;

• Cross the street at an intersection or designated crosswalk when possible and always stop, look left, right, and left again before crossing. Do not rely solely on pedestrian traffic signals;

• Always yield to pedestrians;

• Ride predictably and defensively, and do not ride while drunk or distracted;

• Have a white front headlight and a red rear reflector if riding after dark or in low light conditions.

“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training…” - I Corinthians 9:25

Faith in Christ is like running a race (Hebrews 12:1, 2). We are commissioned by God to live our lives so that at the end of the day it may be said of us we have “fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Our goal is to “win the prize for which God has called us heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). Our eternal reward is “the crown of righteousness” which the Lord Himself will give us on the day to come. (2 Timothy 4:8). While one can do nothing to earn salvation (Ephesians 2:8), Christian growth and maturity is a process, not a stopping point. Just like runners in a race, this requires self discipline and strict training (I Corinthians 9:25). We are instructed to pursue righteousness (I Timothy 6:11). Reading the Bible is one way of pursuing righteousness. In 2 Timothy 3:l5 we read, “All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful in teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” Praying, praising God in worship, sharing our faith and serving Christ through the church are other ways we can grow in our faith. Training in righteousness is a lifelong process. With that in mind, it is my privilege to share the following results of the Third Annual Community Church Challenge (Ready-or-Not 5K Race). Robert A. MACAK AGE 72 – OTSEGO, MI

Robert passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo surrounded by his loved ones. He was born March 14, 1943 in Chicago, IL the son of Robert and Josephine (Tikalsky) Macak. For more than 18 years Bob had worked for WL Molding as an engineer. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing bingo, hunting, fishing, flying planes and taking care of “geezers” as he always said. On November 19, 1976 at the First Congregational Church of Otsego he married Terri Zwiers who survives. Also surviving are his children, Tracy (Todd) Boekeloo of Portage, Terry (Jason) Fiala of Highlands Ranch, CO, Sara (John) Saylor of Paw Paw and “rent-a-kid” daughter, Katey Fuhrman; 3 grandchildren, Logan Crespo, Rachel Boekeloo, Leanna Saylor and another due on his birthday, 3/14/16; sister, Donna Mae Gilchrist of Missouri and his mother-in-law, Jean Zwiers of Martin. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin sister, Barbara Barbour. Cremation has taken place. Friends may visit with Bob’s family Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Ray Brown officiating. AGE 91 – PLAINWELL, MI Hattie passed away peacefully Saturday,0000 August 1, 2015 in Plainwell. Hattie was born July 16, 1924 in Nebo, KY, to Eva and Ira Ipock. For many years she worked as a dishwasher in a local restaurant. She was an extremely hard worker. She had a wonderful garden wherever she lived. She enjoyed flower gardening and canning, nothing went to waste. She was very fond of dogs, particularly Chihuahuas, the family always had one. Also surviving is a twin sister whom she enjoyed living next to for many years. On November 2, 1946 she married Everett Brock in Norwood, Ohio. They had 64 years together until his death in 2010. She is survived by 2 sons and a daughter: Ronnie (Kathy) Brock of Plainwell; Roger (Carol) Brock of Otsego; Darlene Brock of Plainwell; two grandsons, Ronnie Jr. (Cindi) of Portage; David (Jamie) Brock of Plainwell; one granddaughter, Becky (Bill) Dennis of Plainwell; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place; there will be no memorial service at this time. Private burial in KY will take place at a later date. The family would like to thank Life Care Center of Plainwell and Great Lakes Hospice for their special attention and exceptional care.

The older of two children, Brenda was born to Clarence Arthur and Bernice Elizabeth (Punches) Grauman on January 18, 1940 in Allegan, Michigan. She was a graduate of Plainwell High School and WMU. On November 20, 1959, in Plainwell, Brenda married the love of her life, Robert Powers, and together they raised four children. Brenda owned and operated the Mercantile Antiques and Costume Shop in Otsego for 20 years. She will be remembered for her love of adventure, her sharp wit, cando attitude, her passion for serving the underdog, and for her love of the Lord. A life-long social bug, she will be dearly missed by many, including special friends from the Goon Squad, the Golden Girls, the Plainwell High School class of ’58 monthly lunch group and the loving church family of the Otsego United Methodist Church. Brenda was never afraid to “let her light shine”, so we ask all who knew and loved her to light a candle in memory of a life well used and to seek out how we too, may shine our light on the world. Brenda was preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Bernice Grauman. She is survived by her husband Robert; her children, Jeff (Mary) Powers of Grand Rapids, Jerrie (Tom) Matthews, Sherrie (Larry) Town and Tim (Susan) Powers all of Otsego; 12 grandchildren, Ashley (Richard) Humphries, Brian Powers, Andrea Powers, Matt (Cathy) Matthews, Kevin (Kim) Matthews, Jenna (Matthew) Leyndyke, Bobby Matthews, Aric (Lindsey) Town, Adam Town, Veronica Powers, Jessica Powers and Sabrina Powers; 7 greatgrandchildren, Navene, Kennedy, Brady, Claire, Cameron, Evelyn and Case; her sister, Mary Howe and her brother Jerry Grauman. Friends may meet with her family, Sunday, August 9, 2015 from 4 to 7 PM at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. A service celebrating the life of Brenda will be held Monday, August 10, 2015 at 11: 00 A.M. at the Otsego United Methodist Church, Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Contributions in memory of Brenda may be made to the charity of your choice, or please consider honoring Brenda by performing a random act of kindness.
