In 1990, I was 17 years old and about to begin my senior year of high school when I was told that I had cancer. As the words flowed from my doctors lips, my life was changed forever. I had two options: live 3 years on the treatment they had available or have a relatively new procedure called a bone marrow transplant.

My family and I chose the transplant. In the year after my transplant, I became very ill and fell into a coma with a blood infection. My parents were told I would die within a few hours. Miraculously and by God’s healing power, I lived.

I had an emergency splenectomy, my right foot amputated, and many complications with my heart that I still deal with today. I was also told I would never have children. However, 10 years after my husband John and I were married, we had Jack (now a 7th grader at OMS). Jack came 2 months early. My pregnancy was difficult but he was and is a survivor!

When Jack was 6 months old, my gynecologist felt a tumor in my abdomen and within 24 hrs I was having a total nephrectomy. Again, miraculously the cancer had not spread, and it was removed along with my right kidney. Since then, I have had two hip replacements and deal with lifelong issues every day. You will never know clarity and true peace of mind until you look death in the face and know how much of what we worry about is so meaningless. I thank my God every day for allowing me to feel that peace and experience the blessing of true clarity.

This year, I celebrate 28 years since my bone marrow transplant, and my original disease of CML has never returned.

Kenneth R. KESSLER

Kyra passed away Sunday, September 9, 2018 at her home in Allegan. She was born January 5, 1991 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the daughter of Theron and Hope (Adams) Sutton. Kyra was a 2009 graduate of Lakewood High School in Sumter, South Carolina. She had attended DeVry University and the University of South Carolina. Kyra was proudly serving her country as a Yeoman Second Class in an active unit in the US Navy Reserves. She was also a Department of Defense Sexual Assault Advocate for the Navy Reserves. Kyra loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking, working out, spending time with her dog, Casper, playing video games and anime and had started an anime club at her high school. Surviving are her parents, Theron and Hope Sutton of Allegan, husband, Stephen Meyer of South Carolina; brother, Shane Sutton of Allegan; sister, Ashley Moore of Kentucky; the love of her life, nephew, Rayne Sutton who she affectionately called “the kid” along with a large extended family. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, September 15, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego With the US Navy Chaplin officiating. Ken passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born August 7, 1944 in Hammond, Indiana the son of Russell and Helen (Paswinski) Kessler. Ken moved to the area in 1990 and for many years he had worked for Wise International. He loved to tinker and liked making things for his grandchildren. He also enjoyed working on cars and tractors and restoring refrigerators. On November 27, 1976 in Hessville, Indiana he married Nada Osting who passed away in May 2017. Surviving are his daughter Kristine Adams of Florida and step-son, Scott (Christina) Doelling of Ohio; 5 grandchildren; 3 greatgrandchildren and sister, Ruth Chovanec of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Kimberly Wilson. Friends may visit with Ken’s family starting at 5:00 P.M., Friday, September 14, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego until the time of the funeral service at 6:00 P.M., with Pastor Barry Lucas officiating. Amber L. HEDGES AGE 20 - ALLEGAN, MI

Amber passed away Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. She was born September 15, 1997 the daughter of Donnie and Carla (Burton) Hedges. Amber was a 2016 Allegan High School graduate and was currently attending Hillside Young Adult Campus. She had volunteered at many local businesses including, Save-A-Lot, My Best Friend’s Inn and Hillside West Cafeteria. Amber enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics in bowling, swimming and T-ball. She liked fishing and woodworking. She had made many wooden signs for businesses in the area including Aubrey’s Closet. Amber was a very kind and loving girl who always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by her family, teachers, classmates and friends. Surviving are her parents and brother, William Hedges of Allegan. She was preceded in death by her infant sister, Cindy Hedges in 1993. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. Richard L. “Dick” WOOD AGE 86 - KALAMAZOO, MI

Dick L. Wood of Kalamazoo passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice House. He was the son of Fred J. and Alice Wood of Otsego. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Margaret and Gertrude; brothers, William and Robert and his first wife of 60 years, Eleanor. His loving memory is now shared by his wife, Donna; daughters, Holly (Dennis) Swincicki, Kandie Wood and Leslie (Robert) Dreger; grandchildren, Michael (Heather) Henderson, Elizabeth (Eric) Baldwin, Katelynd Dreger and Allyson (Jonathon) Lowis; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. He also extended his love to 3 step-daughters; 7 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren. Dick loved the Lord and was very dedicated to his church. He also was involved with Christian Neighbors lending his hand to help others. He loved sports, playing cards and was a true craftsman woodworker. Dick spent over 40 years with State Farm Insurance as an agent and manager. His life was a wonderful example to his family, friends and anyone he met. His spirit will live on in those he loved. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday September 28, 2018 at the Otsego Church of God with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. Jim passed a w a y Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born March 2, 1942 in Otsego the son of Lewis and Ruth (Robinson) Folk. Jim proudly served his country in the US Air Force. Through the years he had worked for a silo company, Menasha and Walmart. With the help of his family Jim had also demolished several buildings in the local area. He loved to travel and also enjoyed following NASCAR, watching old western movies, going for evening rides looking for deer and spending time with his family and friends. On February 16, 1962 in Otsego he married the love of his life Wanda Mott who passed away in 2003. Together they opened their hearts and home to 21 foster children over the years. Jim was a very giving person and was always willing to help anyone in need. Surviving are his children, David (Terri) Folk, Diane (Dean) Jones and Kevin (Doreen) Folk, 7 grandchildren, Tony, Kris, Pat, Tom, Mike, Jeff and Lauren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 greatgreat-grandchild; brothers, Alan (Ethel) Folk and William (Carol) Folk; sister, Gloria Chency; sisters-in-law, Millie Folk and Bonnie (Duane) Ketchum; brothers-in-law, Karl (Linda) Mott and Lyle Selby; many nieces and nephews and close friends who were like family, Nate and Linda Vance and children, Nicholas and Emily. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter, Linda; brothers, Robert, Norman and Sam and step-father, Ernest Licht. According to his wishes cremation has taken place. AGE 102 - ALAMO TWP., MI Fran passed away Friday, September 7, 2018 at Alamo Nursing Home. She was born July 14, 1916 in Gobles the daughter of Vernon and Isa (Giddings) Niles. Fran enjoyed dancing, shopping, doing crossword puzzles, trips to the casino and playing bridge with her bridge club. She was a member of the Otsego Elks, Otsego VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the United Methodist Church of Otsego. On November 16, 1936 she married Raymond “Rake” Myers who passed away in 1995. Surviving are her sons, Dean (Sharon) Myers of Alamo and Dennis (Donna Beaman) Myers of Gobles; 3 grandchildren, Kelli (Matt) Drobny, Gene (Tina) Myers and Shane (Tracy) Myers; 6 greatgrandchildren, Charlee, Matt, Morgan, Chase, Mike and Connor and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Elaine Brown and daughter-in-law, Oneta Myers. According to her wishes cremation has taken place. “THE HAPPY SOUL”

Question: What is the one thing all of us have which will last forever? Answer: The human soul.

The soul has been defined as the inner life of a person, the seat of emotions, the center of human personality. It has been said we are souls living in bodies.

In Genesis 2:7 we read, “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul.” The word breath in Hebrew is equated with the word Spirit. Thus, in breathing upon him, humankind became a living soul.

In the Bible there are different expressions of the soul such as: the refreshed soul (Psalm l9:7), the restored soul (Psalm 23:3), the thirsty soul (Psalm 42:2), the downcast soul (Psalm 42:11), the waiting soul (Psalm 62:1), the grateful soul (Psalm 139:14), the foolish soul (Luke 12:20), the lost soul (Mark 8:36).

Let’s talk about the happy soul (Psalm 103:1). What makes it happy?

1. The happy soul knows the true source of happiness.

This truth is illustrated in the gospel song Ethel Walters made famous.

2. The happy soul knows the greatness of our God.

This truth is illustrated in the following popular hymn.

“Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee; how great thou art, how great thou art!” (Stuart K. Hine)

3. The happy soul knows its final destination. This truth is illustrated in another well-known hymn.

“And, Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight, the clouds rolled back as a scroll; the trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend, even so, it is well with my soul” (Horatio G. Spafford)

Only God has the power to save a soul and renew a soul. The same God who “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” (Genesis 2:7) has the power to breathe new life into us and carry us eventually to our true home in heaven.

Prayer: Dear Shepherd of our souls, we rest our souls in You. Amen.

Curtis T. PARKHURST AGE 82 - OTSEGO, MI

Curtis passed away Monday, September 10, 2018 at his home in Otsego. He was born February 24, 1936 in Grand Rapids, the son of Lawrence and Mary (Beach) Parkhurst. Curtis was a 1954 Comstock Park High School graduate. For many years he had been a surveyor for the Michigan Transportation Right of Way Department until his retirement in 1989. Curtis was a member of Allegan Wesleyan Church for 35 years and currently attended the Otsego Church of God. He also was a founding member of the Western Michigan Friendship Force. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, electronics and volunteering at Kids Hope. On September 3, 1960 he married Darlene Heath who passed away in 1977. On January 24, 1980 he married Jennette Bargwell who survives. Also surviving are his children, Jack (Lori), Jim (Julie), Curt (Tonia), Robert and Kathy (Dale) along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Peggy and grandson, Jacob. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Friday, September 14, 2018 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. A private family burial will be held Saturday at Sand Lake Cemetery in Sand Lake with Rev. Lee Zabrocki officiating. Contributions in memory of Curtis may be made to the Otsego Church of God.
