Jeffery Kenneth CARTER AGE 64 - PLAINWELL, MI

Jeffery passed away on September 5, 2019 at his home. He was born on January 29, 1955 in, Toledo, OH, the son of the late Kenneth Carter and Nancy (Vaughn) Carter. On October 5, 1979, he married Sandra T. Carter (Genis), who survives him. Jeffery was a 1979 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he received his B.S. He worked for Glassmaster Controls as Chief Financial Officer, retiring in 2012. Previously he had worked at Sears for twenty years in various positions. He loved Corvettes, spending time boating and fishing and was an avid University of Michigan sports fan. Jeffery is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Sandra Carter; one sister, Darcy (Richard) Wilson; nieces and nephews, Sean Genis, Stephanie Jones, Cameron Wilson, Zachary Wilson and Cody Wilson; aunts and uncles, Pam and Tom Dickens & January and Thomas Roskelly. Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of life will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jeffery`s memory may be sent to Christian Neighbors Food Pantry. “Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name…” (Philippians 2:9)

It is common for people to want to make a name for themselves. Actors, politicians, athletes, yes even pastors, are often driven by name recognition and the desire for power and authority over others. There is an old proverb which would seem to contradict this, “A good name is to be desired above riches” (Proverbs 22:1). Yet the very next verse puts it in perspective, “Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all” (Proverbs 22:2). As long as we do everything for the glory of God, selfish pride is no longer an issue. While it is a good thing to take pride in what the Lord has done in our lives (healthy pride); there is such a thing as taking ourselves too seriously! A case in point is the psalmist who called out kings and rulers of his time who arrogantly set themselves up against God (Psalm 2:1-2). The psalmist then mocks their sense of self-importance by saying, “The One enthroned in heaven laughs…” (Psalm 2:4). There is a reason the sixth-century pope (Gregory the Great) placed pride at the top of his codified list of the seven deadly sins. He listed pride first because it is the root from which others sins grow. The antidote to pride is humility. The irony is that only as we humble ourselves before the Lord are we lifted up (James 4:10). The good news is that we become strong when we call upon “the name that is above every name (Philippians 2:9)” In the name of Jesus sinners were saved (Luke 19:9, 10), the blind received their sight, the lame walked, lepers were cured, the deaf heard and the dead were raised (Luke 7:21-22). In His name strongholds are demolished (2 Cor.10:4), demons tremble (James 2:l9) and multitudes are fed (John 6:35). Even the wind and sea obeyed Him (Matthew 8:27). Jesus alone has the power to bestow life, forgive sins and offer eternal life. Satan could not defeat Him. The tomb could not hold Him. Jesus has final authority over the universe (Ephesians 1:20-22; Colossians 1:16) and one day all believers will reign with Him (Revelation 5:10; 22:5) forever. God invites us to pray in His strong name (John 16:23). Thus, the phrase “In Jesus’ name” is more than an empty saying or post-script to prayer. To call upon His name is to experience His power. One day “at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father” (Philippians 2:l0, 11). If ultimately we shall bow before Him, why not now?

Prayer: Lord of heaven and earth, we bow before You today and always. In Your strong name we pray. Amen.
