FALL, FOOTBALL, AND FAITH

I enjoy the Fall season for many reasons, but the start of football season is one of them I began my football career when I was 7 At the age of 12, my team was hosting one of the best and most feared teams in our league My mom decided to come to the game Every player on this team looked bigger than our biggest player For three quarters, we got demolished I don’t remember the exact score, but it was something like 30-0 Things got worse for me in the fourth quarter when I experienced one of the most embarrassing moments of my life! I was playing defensive tackle On one particular play, I didn’t get blocked I ran hard through the line and toward the back who was running to my left I started to chase him down until, out of nowhere, a 300 pound (preacher exaggeration) full back blindsided me, taking me off my feet and to the ground I was flat on my back on the field with my wind, and my pride knocked out of me I looked over to the sideline, hoping my coach would come rescue me That’s when it happened! My mom, in front of all the players and fans, came running onto the field to save me I had never been so humiliated in my life

I quickly got onto my feet and ran off the field When me and my mom got to the sideline, I let her have it “Mom, how could you do that to me? Why would you embarrass me in front of all these people by running onto the field? What were you thinking?” I’ll never forget what she said She looked at me with deep compassion and said, “I couldn’t just stay on the sideline while my son was suffering on the field ” And that, my friends, is what God through Jesus Christ has done for us God saw humanity suffering on the field of life, flat on our backs in hopeless despair and intense pain He just couldn’t stay on the sideline Instead, he ran onto the field, becoming one of us to suffer with us and to save us because he loves us God is not aloof and far removed from the pain and angst of the human condition Nope, he willingly entered into it Why? Because, like my mom, God couldn’t stay on the safe sideline watching his daughters and sons suffer on the field Wow!
