In recent weeks, hurricanes, storm surge flooding, and tornadoes have wreaked havoc in our southern states. For several days, 24 hour news coverage showed unimaginable scenes of destruction, devastation and displacement. Our hearts went out to the victims. There was a phrase that was used often throughout the news coverage. It was the phrase “Eye of the storm.” This is defined as the calm region at the center of the hurricane. This brings to mind the words of David, the Psalmist. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” David was no stranger to trouble. Before he became Israel’s greatest king, he lived the life of a fugitive. Pursued by King Saul (who was insanely jealous of him), he fled for his life and led the life of an outlaw. After the death of Saul, he was anointed king and enjoyed great success. He sinned with Bathsheba and because of that carried much guilt. The Fifty-first Psalm is his prayer of repentance. The point is there are many kinds of storms we face in life … some are wind, rain and fire … some are emotional … some are spiritual. Sam passed away at home on Saturday, September 16, 2017. Sam was born in Clare County on July 29, 1952. At age five he became a member of the Payne family and was preceded in death by his adopted parents, Robert J. and Ruth B. (Podbilski) Payne. He was also preceded in death by his mother inlaw, Nettie Walker; sister in-law, Edith Blaksley and his grandpa and grandma Thompson. Sam attended public schools in Marion, Michigan where he was active in baseball, football, track and band. He worked with his father as a young man, who owned and operated Marion Dairy. Sam started delivering milk at the age of 13 with a special issued driver’s license. On December 26, 1980, he was united in marriage to the former Joyce E. Walker who survives. Sam is also survived by his children, Amy, Lisa, Robert A. and Thomas A. Payne; nephew, Ian Downs, with whom he shared a special bond; granddaughters, Brittany, Jessica, Hailey and Emma and four great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include his sisters, Marla (Dean) Namboothiri and Sandy K. Payne; sister in-law, Nancy (Dave) Cretsinger; brother in-law, Harry Blaksley; former wife and mother of his daughters, Kathy (Dusa) Smith and many nieces, nephews and extended family. In Sam’s later years, he enjoyed a good cup of coffee and a game of Dominos with friends; a smooth cherry cigar and a motorcycle ride on warm days. Although he was a bit of a rebel, Sam loved his country and appreciated traditional values. He also had a great love for history, woodworking and spending time with his family. A celebration of Sam’s life will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Motorcycle Association, c/o the funeral home. Joyce passed away peacefully on Sept. 20, 2017. Joyce was born on December 26, 1938 to Alton & Nelda (Weller) Ayers. Joyce’s family includes her daughter: Cindy Hokenmaier; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Alton & Nelda and her step father Robert Hall; two children: Suzy Steele and Mike Steele. She really enjoyed nature, in particular flowers and trees. Joyce enjoyed traveling and loved an adventure. She lived for her grandchildren and always enjoyed creating memories with her lifelong friends and relatives. Joyce worked for Allegan Intermediate School District and Grand Rapids Public Schools as an Adaptive Physical Education and swimming teacher with special needs students for over 30 years. The family would like to thank Joyce’s partner, Bob Howrigan for his love and support over her last year and a half. Visit with her family and friends at her celebration of life gathering on Friday, Sept. 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Life Story Funeral Home, Plainwell. A graveside service has taken place. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to auctions, fishing, gardening and spending time with his grandkids and family. Ted is survived by his children: Jamie (James Hopper) Hill, Matt Hill (Carissa Ormsbee) and Megan Hill. Grandchildren: Gavin, Mattix, Landin, Taylar, Talon, Mikah, Layla, Faythe, John, Camden, Faylyn and Deegan. He was preceded in death by his mother. No memorial services are planned at this time.
