Surrounded by her family and the laughter and stories of her life, Kathie passed away at home on September 18, 2022 Kathie Amanda John son (Kate) was born on Sep tember 22, 1949 in Tustin, Michigan to Robert and Opal Johnson She graduated from Marion High School in 1968 and Central Michigan University in 1972 For 30 years she was a high school English Teacher at Wayland Union High School in Wayland, Michigan where she was awarded the Katheryn Lorraine Brenner Outstand ing Teacher Award in 2004 After retirement she was adjunct faculty at Western Michigan University School of Education, training and mentoring new teachers as she had mentored colleagues and student teachers during her tenure at Wayland For 40 years she and Bart Volkers partnered in life, travel, grandparenting, and creating a home together in Otsego, Michigan

THE BACK STORY

To illustrate His point, Jesus told the stor y about a wedding feast This is known as the Parable of the Ten Br idesmaids In Jesus’ time the groom and groomsmen would go to the br ide’s home where she and her br idesmaids would be waiting The entire wedding par ty would then have a grand processional through the streets back to groom’s house where the ceremony took place

REFLECTION: It appears that at the beginning of the gospel slaves had joy in their hear ts because the Gospel signaled their emancipation Paul knows slaver y is wrong but it took the Br itish Chr istians in 1807 to end the slave trade (google William Wilberforce) Paul may have been the first of the Apostles of the Gospel to teach the need to abolish slaver y He freed the slaves to accept God in their hear ts and God accepted them as full fledged, bor n again people He goes fur ther and declares, by God’s grace, that the Chr istian owners treat them as brothers and sisters in Chr ist and in effect sets them free Paul’s wr itings, that taught to extinguish ownership of another per son, were going to make a wor ld wide cultural change Indeed the condition of slaver y was abominable The Gospel of Jesus Chr ist was and still is the main mode of ending its activities even today Paul seizes the moment to teach the profound message of Jesus to slaves and slave owners He understands that taking advantage of another person is a sin Anything that has the slightest appearance of being of this nature is a sin Paul sends shock waves into the church by saying to slave owners that their slaves are brothers and sisters in Chr ist The result of Paul’s teaching was seen as ver y unreasonable and irrational It reminds me of people today who, when reading the commandments of God, want some sins not to be sins This is the depth and strangeness of the Gospel to a society lost in dar kness Today we str uggle with obvious Bible teachings on sin which our culture thinks are okay There are ser ious issues like killing, harsh impr isonment, homelessness, and countless abuses in our society People readily accept barbar ic means of bir th control and use of dr ugs It is as obvious then, as it is now, that the bitter ness of afflictions on human beings is appalling Paul br ings to our minds how wretchedly people treat others As Chr istians we need to be compassionate and merciful in coming along side others To change the wor ld, it’s going to take one person at a time It star ts with each of us being bor n again of God

Once referred to as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to recognize all the men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces during wartime and peacetime. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, there are over 21.8 million veterans in the United States, many of whom served in wars, like the Korean Conflict, and the Persian Gulf War. On November 11th, pay tribute to our veterans and thank them for the sacrifice they have made to preserve our freedom and protect our country.
