FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
or some – especially those with large yards – putting the lawnmower away for the winter is accompanied with feelings of relief and accomplishment.
Another mowing season in the books. Another long winter break from trimming, clipping and cutting. But before you store your mower in the shed, there are some simple steps to take to make sure your equipment will be ready to go when the springtime season makes its rounds again. Drain the Tank Leaving your mower’s tank full over the winter can lead to bad gas that can slow down your performance or even harm your engine when it’s time to mow again. Luckily, draining your tank is one of the simplest forms of preventive maintenance you can perform. Syphoning or funneling gas out of a mower can be awkward and messy. Take a few more passes around your yard until your mower runs out of gas, then store your mower away for the winter. Other DIY Tips Mower maintenance does not have be complicated. There are many simple steps you can take to keep your machine running long and strong. With your engine off, use a plastic scraper to remove all of the grass clippings and matted grass from underneath your mower’s deck and blades. Changing your spark plugs yearly is also a simple, quick way to ensure optimum performance. Also requiring annual care is your engine’s oil, which should be changed at either the end or beginning of every mowing season.
Did you know?
Homeowners about to embark on home improvement projects should prioritize dust removal to avoid the potentially negative side effects of exposure to lead dust.
When undergoing a renovation, homes built before 1978, the year the use of lead paint was banned, are likely to produce lead dust, which occurs when lead paint is sanded or chipped. That dust can be especially harmful to children, pregnant women and pets. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead dust that is as small as a grain of sand is enough to poison children, who may suffer brain damage, hearing loss, nervous system and kidney damage, and decreased muscle and bone growth after exposure to lead dust. When pregnant women are exposed to lead dust, that exposure may affect the baby's cognitive development while increasing the mother's blood pressure. Household pets exposed to lead dust may suffer from a series of side effects, including vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain and possibly death. When making renovations to their homes, homeowners can open windows and wear protective gear such as masks and safety goggles to avoid direct exposure to lead dust.
Consult your mower’s product guidelines for any steps that may be specific to your make and model. Take it to the Shop Not all of us are comfortable with taking on maintenance projects without the help of professionals, preferring to seek out the advice of local experts. Many people take their mowers to repair shops during the spring when the lines are longer and the rates are higher. By visiting your local shop during the fall or winter, you can save some time and money from professionals who are usually willing to offer an off-season deal on their services.

of items? No matter your excuse, there are plenty of ways you can de-clutter your life even if you refuse to let go. It might take more than a weekend, but simple steps can make a big difference on the overall space that is being taken up by unnecessary items or clothing. Use the Walls If you have a room with a full floor and bare walls, consider a transformation. Certain items – especially guitars and children’s artwork – can serve as greatlooking additions to any blank wall as well as a major space saver. Install and fill up some basic shelving units on your wall, and watch your floor clean up in a hurry. Shelves are perfect for laundry rooms, workshops, bathrooms, bedrooms, and garages. Swap Out Your Clothing As the weather cools, free up some closet and dresser space by swapping out your tank tops for flannels. Sort through your items to determine what can stay through the fall and winter months and what can be neatly tucked into totes.
Also consider donating your closet of extra clothing to a good cause like a local charity, thrift shop or ministerial alliance. Go Digital Are bulky VHS tapes and CDs taking too much space in your living room or entertainment den? It might be time for you to go digital.
There are many converters available on the market to transfer VHS files into DVD format, which will help rid you of those space-eating VHS tapes. Download all of your CDs onto your computer and save them into easy-tonavigate folders for streamlined storage. Transfer your songs over to your MP3 player, and just like that you have solved one of your storage dilemmas.

mart Tips to Make Fall Lawn Care Easier
(StatePoint) A beautiful lawn is important for a lovely home, but when those autumn leaves begin to fall, some extra effort is required to keep things picture perfect. This once meant firing up noisy machinery and piling up bag after bag of yard waste. Now that we live in more environmentallyconscientious times, this might not seem like such a responsible idea.

Doing things by hand doesn’t have to lead to a sore back. Learning some helpful hints can make your lawn really stand out this year and help you get the job done in a breeze. Spring is when the lawn and garden really come into full bloom, but fall is when plants are storing energy and nutrients to have ready when the season turns. Like an athlete training in the offseason, get a step up on the competition by building a good foundation. Now’s the time to fertilize and aerate since roots keep growing and storing energy even when above-ground growth slows during the colder months. Don’t forget to keep watering too! Weeding can be made less painful if you adhere to the old gardener’s trick of completing this task after it rains. When the earth is dry, it’s harder to pull out the whole weed without breaking off the top. After rainfall, the ground is soft, making it easier to pluck out entire weeds. They can easily be added to leaves and other debris that needs to be hauled away. Leaves can smother your lawn if enough of them build up, preventing sunlight from reaching the grass and increasing the chances of lawn disease. Collecting the leaves in bags allows your lawn to breathe and receive proper sunlight. The average cost to remove leaves is $374. There are easy DIY methods that can save you money. To make your life easier and get the job done faster, consider using tools such as the EZ Leaf Hauler, which acts like a giant dustpan for leaves, and is a cost-effective, green alternative.
Opt for ergonomically designed rakes Reduce waste by packing more leaves into every bag with tools like the EZ Leaf Stomper or using leaves and yard debris for mulch or compost. Good posture can also prevent backaches when raking leaves. Keep your head up and back straight. Relieve back pressure by raking in the “scissors” stance: placing one foot forward and the other back and reversing position when comfortable. Another option is to haul tarps by using pull handles like EZ Tarp Tugger.
Opt for ergonomically designed rakes, shears and pruners that require less hand strength and provide a comfortable non-slip grip to help prevent muscle soreness. More information on innovative tools for raking, hauling and bagging yard waste can be found at www.ezlawnandgarden.com Get a head start on home improvement this fall with smart lawn and garden care. Grab the kids and get the clippers, rake ‘em in and bag ‘em up.

FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
Automating Your Home (StatePoint) The “connected home” is one of the biggest areas of technical innovation today, with smart appliances, learning thermostats, app-driven lights, and intelligent door locks taking center stage in home improvement stores and magazines. In fact, by 2017, an estimated 36 million homes throughout North America and Europe will be smart. For some consumers, the concept of a “smart home” can be overwhelming. Here are a few things to keep in mind: The Basics Home automation gives you remote and automatic control of a wide array of devices in your home -- it’s ideal for convenience and control, and some devices can help with money savings. Home automation can also alert you to events that you might want to know about while you’re gone, like leaks, kids arriving home or security breaches. For your furry family member, your smart home can distribute pre-determined amounts of food on a schedule so you don’t have to worry about your pet missing dinner while you’re stuck in traffic. Is it Right for Your Home? Not everyone is in a place to install a full
home automation system -- literally and financially, as apartment living, renting, low cash flow, expensive installation fees and advanced technical set-up can all be limitations. However, with stand-alone home automation devices and apps, you can make your home smart without integrating a whole-home automation network. For example, smart locks, lighting, irons, coffee makers, security cameras and refrigerators can all be controlled by smartphones without the need for a fully integrated system. First Things First In a recent analyst report from NextMarket, the smart lock market will grow to $3.6 billion worldwide by 2019. With security and access control leading smart home product adoption, a logical place to start is at your front door. Consider trying Kwikset Kevo, powered by UniKey, which was the first smart lock on the market. It makes it possible to open the door by simply touching the deadbolt -- without removing your smartphone from your purse or pocket. Via the Kevo app, users can grant and revoke access to the house electronically, view a lock history and get notified when someone locks or unlocks the door without

Home automation give you remote and automatic control of a wide arrary of devices in your home. connecting to the home network or a power source. Available at many major retailers, it installs easily, within a few minutes, with just a Phillips head screwdriver, making it an excellent example of how one product can usher your home into the era of automation. From there it’s easy to move on to take smarter control of your home appliances and lighting, and you can make as many or as few changes as your budget and imagination allow. to Make the Most of Small Spaces
This is especially true for residents in urban areas who typically have smaller living spaces. And urban living is on the rise. As of 2010, more than half of all people lived in an urban area, and by 2030 it is anticipated that six out of every 10 people will be living in a city, according to the World Health Organization. But less space doesn’t mean that you have to go without, say experts. “A few simple adjustments can help you maintain your comfort in a small home, says Robin Wilson, celebrity interior designer with expertise in creating healthy spaces. There are plenty of ways to “open up your living spaces to create more room.
No matter where you live, you want to make the most of your available living and storage space.

Choose furniture for a small living room that is appropriate for the space. For example, avoid sofas with skirts and select couches which are raised off the floor to create a more open look. A large, strategically placed mirror can also help create the illusion that your living room is actually much larger than it is. The same goes for lack of clutter. Be sure to keep a small space organized with a daily once-over.

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, particularly if you like entertaining or love to cook. Unfortunately, kitchens can get overcrowded quickly by excessive gadgetry. “If counter space is at a premium, consider highly functional appliances that have multiple uses, says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic Genius NNSD681S microwave is equipped with inverter technology, which gives this kitchen essential the ability to function like an oven and ensures every dish is cooked evenly throughout. Though it is compact in size, it still maintains a spacious interior and comes with an optional trim kit that easily converts this microwave to a built-in, freeing up counter space while giving a stylish accent to cabinetry. Ensure that you have lighting at floor, table and eye level to help limit shadows. Another trick is to use a tall lamp to draw eyes upwards and add height to the room. A small home is no excuse for feeling cramped. With a few interior design strategies in place, you can make even the smallest space feel larger in size.

Living simply can go a long way toward making your home feel larger. Every season, go through your closet and toss aside items that are worn out, no longer fit, or are out of style. Use creative storage solutions to make more space. For example, an ottoman that doubles as a trunk is a great place to store old photos and keepsakes. A bike rack that mounts to the wall can clear valuable floor space in your foyer.

FALL HOME SECTION I 2014
Air Quality In Your Home
With winter on the horizon, homeowners who live in locales with harsh winters are preparing their homes for a season spent largely indoors. Unlike the other seasons of the year, when homeowners can comfortably air out their homes by opening windows,

winter offers no such opportunities to let nature improve indoor air quality. Such a reality can make a home uncomfortable as winter drags on. But that discomfort pales in comparison to the health risks presented by poor indoor air quality.

Radon, volatile chemicals from fragrances used in conventional cleaners and lead from house dust are just a few of the many sources of indoor air pollution commonly found in homes, and these pollutants can be especially harmful in winter, when many people spend more time indoors thanks to harsh weather. But while you might not be able to change the weather so you can open windows in the wintertime, you can take steps to improve indoor air quality in your home. • Clean the floors regularly. Dirty floors take their toll on a home's indoor air quality. Dust that's allowed to settle on floors may contain harmful chemicals and allergens that can lead to respiratory problems and additional uncomfortable health conditions. Clean your floors at least once per week during the winter months, ideally with a vacuum that's equipped with a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is important because it can prevent dust and dirt from being blown back out of the vacuum in the exhaust. After you have vacuumed, mop the floors as well, as even the most effective vacuums leave potentially harmful dust particles behind. A once-over with a mop and some hot water can remove any lingering dust left behind by the vacuum. • Place a floor mat near every entrance. Winter is a messy season, and it's easy to bring in the great outdoors when you enter your home during cold weather seasons. Dirt that sticks to your shoes may contain potentially harmful chemicals, so place a floor mat near any door where people routinely enter your home and politely ask that all who enter wipe off and remove their shoes before moving about the house. • Dehumidify your home. Mold and dust mites thrive on moisture, so homeowners concerned about the moisture in their homes during the winter months can purchase a dehumidifier to control allergens and reduce moisture in the air. In addition to using a dehumidifier, you can control humidity in your home by using an exhaust fan when cooking, addressing leaky plumbing fixtures to prevent mold growth and making sure your clothes dryer is vented to the outside of your home. • Choose naturally scented laundry products. Everyone wants their freshly
cleaned clothes to smell good, but the price you pay when using laundry products that employ synthetic fragrances may be far more steep than you realize. Such synthetic fragrances emit dozens of chemicals into the air, so choose naturally scented detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets when possible. • Avoid plug-in air fresheners. Unless otherwise noted on the packaging, plug-in air fresheners likely contain volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which contain a variety of chemicals that can negatively impact both short and long-term health. Instead of plugging in an air freshener to improve a home's interior aroma, slice fresh lemons and leave them out in the kitchen and keep fresh indoor plants in living areas. Studies from NASA have shown that indoor plants naturally purify indoor air by absorbing materials released by synthetic materials. As winter gets set to return, homeowners can employ several simple strategies to improve indoor air quality in their homes.
Routinely vacuuming floors can improve indoor air quality in a home by preventing the buildup of dust mites and other harmful allergens.

“Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...” – Matthew 28: 19,20 Shortly before He left this earth Jesus gave a great commission. They were among His last words to the original disciples. The commission is for the ages. Here is how it breaks down: 1. A GREAT MESSAGE – God’s Love Jesus said that love is the greatest commandment. Inasmuch as we love others as Christ loves us, it can be said we are obeying Him. Inasmuch as we love ourselves (healthy self-esteem), it can be said we are obeying Him. 2. A GREAT MESSENGER – Jesus Christ Jesus is the message and the messenger wrapped in one person. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John l: l4). 3. A GREAT MANDATE – “Go, make disciples …” The mandate is for all generations. Years ago a Post Office was dedicated in a large city in Pennsylvania. State and local dignitaries were present along with a marching band and a large crowd of people. But when they went to mail the ceremonial letter in the mail box, they discovered a surprising mistake. The postal box did not have a place to drop the mail inside the box! As a mailbox is made for collecting mail and sending it forward, the church exists for sending God’s love here and throughout the world. Let us not make the Great Commission our great omission. Let us share the message, the Messenger and the mandate to the world! Prayer: Lord, help us to spread your love to everyone. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

“Krazy for the Kazoo” Community Event Celebrates Conservation Volunteer Saturday, October 4th at the Kalamazoo River Cleanup Event
Local municipalities and the Kalamazoo River Watershed Council are inviting community members of all ages to celebrate the Kalamazoo River by volunteering in a river cleanup and conservation day event. This is an opportunity for residents and others who love our river to have fun while supporting this valuable natural resource. Volunteers can help keep the river clean by signing up to clean a riverside park or remove trash from a stream. This watershed-wide event, called Krazy for the Kazoo, will take place on Saturday, October 4, 2014, at seven different locations. In Allegan County, volunteers should meet at Fannie Pell Park in Plainwell or the Otsego Historical Museum in Otsego at 9:00 am or the Allegan County Fairgrounds at 9:30 am. More information can be found at www.kalamazooriver.org. Contact the

local host for more information about each site. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. Trash bags, gloves, and tools will be provided. Refreshments will be served and all participants will receive a free Krazy for the Kazoo t-shirt. Krazy for the Kazoo builds on multiple successful river cleanups organized by communities in the region for the past 12 years. This year, more communities and volunteers are working together on the same day to promote good stewardship of the Kalamazoo River. The event is meant to help promote stewardship and improve water quality of the river. The health of the Kalamazoo River is impacted by pollution from human activities on land and in the water. Stormwater from cities and runoff from agriculture wash nutrients and sediment into streams, lakes, and rivers. This can lead to unsightly algae, poor fishing, and unpleasant beaches. Help be a part of the solution and protect our community natural resources by volunteering at one of the Krazy for the Kazoo cleanup events this fall.
