AGE 103 – ALLEGAN

“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come.” – Psalm 71:18 (NIV) I have been retired now for l4 months and loving it. I have enjoyed doing what I want to do, when I want to do it. That all changed on 9/11 – a day of sadness, not only for our nation, but for the people of Gobles and Kendall United Methodist Churches. That was the day they lost their beloved pastor, Ed Mohr, in a tragic bike accident. That same afternoon I received the call to provide pastoral leadership for two grieving churches until such time as a new pastor shall be appointed. Of course I can. I arranged for a prayer service which was held that evening. All of a sudden, “I’m back in the saddle” pastoring two churches. It has been a “Minor adjustment” to say the least. The first thing I had to do was buy a calendar! (My obsolete palm pilot finally gave out). It is really not about me. It is about the Body of Christ (His church on earth) pulling together. We have been warmly received and it is a pleasure to help. I am reminded of a story that comes out of the Old Testament. In the Book of Numbers (8:24-25), the Lord gives instructions to Moses concerning the Levites. The Levites were to begin serving at age 25 and retire at age 50. Thereafter, they were to continue to be active – not in their former priestly role but in the equally important role of assisting others. We never retire from serving God. God always has something for us to do. In the meantime, will you do me a favor? I am missing Sunday morning worship at Otsego United Methodist Church. Will you bring a car load of people to church this Sunday and tell them Dan sent you? Prayer: Lord, help us to pray with the psalmist, “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122:1).

Anna passed away Saturday, September 22, 2012 in Allegan. Mrs. Grimes was born July 28, 1909 in Jonesville, MI the daughter of Wellington and Minnie (Davis) Lawrence. She graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1927 and from Bronson School of Nursing in 1931. Anna worked as a RN until she retired in 1968. In her leisure time she enjoyed knitting and crocheting and had been a member of the Merson Church and Otsego Women of the Moose. Surviving are her daughter Frances Rutherford of Delton; 9 grandchildren, Kitty Towne, Gary Rutherford, Larry Rutherford, Harry Rutherford, Dan Rutherford, Mary Ann Winn, June Lester, Penny Marshall and Karen Butcher; many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband W.B. Grimes in 1974; a daughter, Beatrice Ann Dent; grandson David Rutherford and her brothers William and Samuel Lawrence; a son-in-law Donald Rutherford and a great-great grandson, David Towne Jr. A graveside service was held Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Mt. EverRest Memorial Park Chapel in Kalamazoo. Pastor Alan Carson Sr. officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ivan went home to be with the Lord, September 26th, 2012 at his residence with his fiance, Laura Konnight at his side. Mac loved the outdoors, loved to hunt & fish and enjoyed fixing things. Mac did roofing & brick laying. He is survived by his mother, Donna Mead of Allegan, his dad, Ivan Mac Sr. and stepmother, Paula Sooy of Orangeville. Also, 2 sons, Travis and Dustin, both of Oklahoma; 1 daughter, Kaily of Orangeville; 1 brother, Brian Mead of Allegan; several aunts, uncles & nephews Tyler & Tyson Mead. Burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery, Orangeville.

Alberta passed away quietly Wednesday evening, September 24, 2012. Alberta was born on March 7, 1933 in Kalamazoo to Lona (Arnett) Glidic and Ora McComis who both preceded her in death. Alberta was a loving wife and mother. While raising seven children and working many demanding jobs, she also worked with her late husband, Malcolm in the horse racing business. Horses were their shared passion. She continued her education throughout life, all the while working and raising a family. To limit Alberta’s role as a mother to her children would not do her justice. She was a mother to many others in the family. She did more for her grandchildren in a year than most would expect to be done in a lifetime. Her sense of humor, knowledge, passion and love remains in all of those whom she and Malcolm raised and knew; we all will miss her greatly. She passed on the same day as Malcolm, September 24, and they are together, fittingly and forever. Also preceding her in death were Malcolm Lee Smith, her husband of 48 years; son Gary Lee Foster; brothers Curtis Plummer, Carl Cecil, and Earl Clifford (Mac) McComis and sister Shirley Ann (McComis) Okeley. Surviving are sons Larry Lee (Sue) Smith of Otsego, Larry Joe (Suzanne) Foster of Buda, Texas; daughter-inlaw Sue Schiebergen of Paw Paw; daughters Barbara (Daniel) Schumacher of College Station, Texas, Sheryl Todd of Plainwell, Terrie Smith of Vicksburg, and Mary (Randall) Meitz of Plainwell; one brother- and sister-in-law Frederick and Katherine Smith of Mattawan; sisters-in-law Shirley McComis of Plainwell, and Georgia (Midge) McComis of Kalamazoo. Alberta leaves 17 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews. On Sunday, September 30th a private interment will be held at Mount Ever-Rest on Drake Road at 1:00 p.m. Join the family in Alberta’s Celebration of Life and a light meal at Gun Plain Township Hall from 3:00-5:00 p.m. A brief memorial service will be conducted by Larry J. Foster, beginning at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, it is Alberta’s family’s request that donations go to the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Kalamazoo, 1833 South Burdick Street, Kalamazoo, MI, 49001.
