The City of Otsego Water Department will flush all fire hydrants October 2 through October 13. This is done to remove any stale water that may be in the system and ensure that the fire hydrants are working properly. You may experience reduced pressure and discoloration during this process. If discoloration occurs, let your water run until it clears.

Drivers, Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Tips Drivers should: • Look out for and always yield the right-of-way to people walking, jogging, biking, etc.; • Pull out slowly from driveways and parking areas while watching for vulnerable road users, including children and others on the sidewalk or nearby pathways; • Stop fully before turning at driveways and intersections to make sure you do not cut off pedestrians or approaching bicyclists with right of way; • Never turn right immediately after passing a cyclist - wait until the cyclist has completed the trip through the intersection; • Do not pass vehicles stopped at crosswalks, as they may be allowing a pedestrian to cross the street; • Yield to anyone crossing the street when turning left on a green light; • Watch for surprising changes in direction, especially by children or cyclists avoiding road hazards. • When parallel parked, check for approaching cyclists before opening your door; • Leave sufficient space when passing vulnerable road users and take every possible precaution to avoid collision.

Pedestrians are reminded to:

• Walk on the side of the road as far to the left as possible or on a paved shoulder AGAINST oncoming traffic where there are no sidewalks;

• Avoid entering the roadway without first stopping to look for vehicles;

• Cross the street at an intersection or designated crosswalk when possible and always stop, look left, right, and left again before crossing. Do not rely solely on pedestrian traffic signals;

• Always yield to pedestrians;

• Come to the edge of a parked vehicle, stop and look both ways if it's blocking the view of the street before entering the street. This is also recom-

In Loving Memory of My Wife “Sally”

My wife and I had a wonderful life together. God gave us 62 years. I know that’s a lot in today’s day and age. I know we were very blessed and I am truly grateful. Yes, we had our ups and downs like every marriage, especially when we were first starting out. There were many times we could have given up, but, we didn’t because we had a third party between us that kept us from doing that. LET ME EXPLAIN… My beautiful wife, at the age of 6, gave her life to Jesus Christ. When we met during our high school years (and married shortly after that) she still loved the Lord while I had yet to be introduced to her God and Savior. You see, I was a bit of a rebel and also on my way to having a problem with alcohol. As expected, her parents were not thrilled with me, especially her father. But, Sally saw something in me that many didn’t see. Hope...hope that if she kept praying for me we would make it through anything. Hope I could be a better man. She never gave up on me. Then, after 20 some years, her prayers were in fact answered. It took awhile, but, eventually while in my 40’s the “third party”, who in fact is Jesus because my Jesus and Lord and Savior. I accepted him into my heart, and I have never been the same. That started my road to sobriety. Without Jesus (and her prayers) I know I couldn’t have made it. That’s when we also started to really live a wonderful life, equally yoked, living for Jesus, together. Now fast forward to October 2016…My loving wife at the age of 78 started having terrible health issues. For nearly 10 months I became her caregiver. She was in and out of the hospital for most of those months. I took to praying for her with the same faith she had when she used to pray for me for all those years. I was able to find peace that goes beyond understanding. The peace that only Jesus our Savior can give. One day it got to the point when I looked at her, there in the hospital, I just knew I wouldn’t have her much longer. She wasn’t going to get better. She would never be the same. But later that day, in a conversation with her (while she couldn’t utter much) I asked her if she was wanting and ready to be with her Jesus, our Jesus. She turned her head and with a slight grin, probably all she could muster, nodded her head yes she was. When I went home that night I prayed for God’s will. I didn’t want her to be suffering. I asked God to take that away. This was July 13th. The next day, July 14th, God answered that prayer and removed her from her earthly body and took her to be with Him in heaven. While I miss her so dearly, I realize our love will never end. I have been blessed to have had her. She may have been the only one who even had faith enough to try to teach me of a faith in Jesus Christ. Because of that faith, I know that I too will leave this world one day to be reunited with her and our dear Savior Jesus. Only God knows when I will be on the way. But, I’m ready when he calls me. I pray now for the same kind of love and faith for all of you reading this. On October 1st, we would have celebrated our 63rd Anniversary.

John Harvey Thurston, Sr. would like to send a special thank you to the First Congregational Church of Otsego for the beautiful service for our beloved husband, father and grandfather. A special thank you to Pastor Darin Youngs, David Youngs, and everyone at the church who helped with the funeral and luncheon. We also want to thank Ben and Amy at Winkel Funeral Home, who were so compassionate and caring. Thank you to everyone who prayed, sent cards, called and visited John at the nursing home and during his three hospital stays the last five months. We are so very grateful. We will cherish our memories with John and he will remain in our hearts forever.

John Harvey THURSTON, Sr. AGE 88 - OTSEGO, MI

John was a retired auctioneer from Otsego, who went to be with his Lord and Saviour on September 8, 2017. John was well-known in the community for his auction business, which he began in 1972. He will be greatly missed. John was born on May 6, 1929 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was the firstborn of Ira and Lorraine Thurston. John attended the one room schoolhouse known as the Brook Farm School, on Douglas Avenue. He later attended Woodward Elementary and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1948. As a child, he grew up on Barney Road which was very close to the celery fields on Mosel Avenue. John had a very happy, fulfilled childhood. He told so many stories of adventures that he had shared with his cousins who lived close by. He told of skiing down the hill behind his house, where the US-131 Business loop to Kalamazoo is now located. He rode his Indian motorcycle in the Allegan County Fairgrounds race. He loved being outdoors, and was always doing something exciting. His mother even took him to a Harry Blackstone show where he was chosen to pull the rabbit out of the hat! After graduation, John was hired at Hammond Machinery, on Douglas Avenue. He later worked for Kalamazoo Stove Company and also the Eckrich Meat Company. He was a very hard worker his whole life, and his example will never be forgotten. Later that year, John met Annabell Brackin from Florida. She was visiting her

We would like to extend our gratitude and love to all the people, family and friends, who helped guide and comfort us in our greatest time of need. The police, Martin Fire Department and other first responders were there right away to help us cope and to comfort us right after the loss of Bill. Winkel Funeral Home director, Ben, spent countless hours helping us and using his talents to see that we were able to say our good-byes to Bill one last time to get the closure we all needed. Ben and his employees were so very helpful and caring which made a very difficult situation a little easier. We chose Bill Rose to lead the funeral service. He really spent a lot of time with our family and researching Bill's life and careers to be able to help us put on an amazing service. He and Ben at Winkel's saw that the service was perfect, just as we wanted it. We would also like to thank the Otsego Methodist Church and the ladies who worked so very hard to put the luncheon on. We could not have done it ourselves with all the other things we had to do. Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt love and sincere thanks to our family and friends who were there to help us in various ways. Many of you have been there for all of us over the years when we needed you and your love. We could never thank you all enough for comforting us and helping us after Bill’s death. Your help, food, stories and pictures were so very needed and they were therapeutic to our hearts to hear how much Bill was loved by so many. We will ALWAYS miss and love Bill, his kind, caring nature and the way he listened so deeply to all of us when we needed it. He always tried to give everyone the best advice he could and to help everyone the best way he knew how. He loved all of us so very much and we will miss him and love him forever. He will never be forgotten and his love for everyone will not be forgotten. God bless Bill and all of you who loved him.

James passed away on September 20, 2017 in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born on April 7, 1991 in Plainwell, MI and was raised in Martin and Kalamazoo, MI. Jimmy was dearly loved and will be missed by his father, Thomas Kelsey of Martin, his mother, Robyn Smith of Kalamazoo, and his “other mother” - Aunt Alice Kelsey also of Martin. Those who knew Jimmy will remember his quick smile and his soft-spoken manner. Jimmy loved animals, especially his dogs. Jimmy was always quick to lend a hand and assumed the role of caregiver for many people in his life. Jimmy is survived by his parents and his aunt. He is also survived by his daughter Alexandra Nicole Kelsey-Harrington; his sister Shantel Nicole Smith of Kalamazoo; his brother Alexander Allen James Smith of Kalamazoo; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Jimmy was preceded in death by his Grandparents Robert and Beverly Kelsey and his Grandparents Brenda Burgen and Dan Campbell. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Martin United Methodist Church, 969 E. Allegan Street, Martin, Michigan on Saturday, September 30th at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service. Cremation has taken place as were Jimmy’s wishes. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to: Martin United Methodist Church Youth Programming.

brother, Oscar Lewis. He introduced her to John, and they fell in love. They were married on June 18, 1948. They had a daughter, Patricia, born in 1950. Two years later, another daughter, Sandra was born in 1952. In 1953, they both excepted Christ as their Saviour at an Evangelistic meeting at the Covey Hill Baptist Church in Paw Paw, MI. Also in 1950, John bought a small cottage on Eagle Lake in Texas Corners. His oldest daughter bought the property in 1974, and lives on the two adjoining lots. John made a wise investment when he bought this land in 1950. In 1955, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona due to John's asthma and allergies. They settled in Sunnyslope, and later moved to Paradise Valley, which is north of Phoenix. John found work at Nelsons Nursery and then was hired by Reynolds Aluminum in Phoenix. He was employed there for 10 years while he lived in Phoenix. John took his family on many vacations in Northern Arizona where it was cooler. They visited the Grand Canyon and Oak Creek Canyon, where the children could swim, and he could fish for trout. He also took them to Saguaro Lake and Superstition Mountains in Tempe where they dug for Apache tear stones. The family still has them to this day. John also bought several horses at different times for his children. This was a sacrifice to him, since hay was so expensive, but he always tried to make his family happy. John designed and built two homes for his family while in Arizona. He built the first one in 1959, and the other one in 1964. They both had beautiful fireplaces in them, and were very nice homes. In 1960 he bought a small restaurant in Bell Center on Bell Road. He named it Thurston's Restaurant. He and Ann both worked very hard at running the restaurant and had many loyal customers. John was even pursuing getting a patent for a T-burger bun he designed. Unfortunately, the business did not do as well as they had hoped, and they had to sell it. In 1962, his son John Harvey Thurston Jr. was born. In 1964, John began thinking about coming back to Kalamazoo due to layoffs at Reynolds Aluminum. He and his family returned to his hometown in December of 1964. John worked at National Gypson Paper Mill and later at the Kalamazoo Paper Mill. He and his family moved to Plainwell in 1965. Around 1969, he became interested

in antiques, flea markets and attending auctions. That year, the family moved to Otsego. In 1972, John attended Hinkley Auction School in Battle Creek, Michigan. He graduated on May 5, 1972 which was the day before his 43rd birthday! He was finally able to pursue a career that he would end up loving. He had his first auctions at his pole barn at 604 W. M-89 which was called the Now and Then Barn. He then bought a business on 10th Street in Plainwell and named it the Auction Place. He stayed there several years and eventually sold it. He then named his business Thurston's Auction Service. In the auctioneer world, he was known as "Honest John." The auction business is a lot of work, and you must be willing to work long hours, and work very hard. John loved it, and never complained about all the extra hours he put in. One of his coworkers even said that he would work through his lunch hour to get a house emptied or whatever else needed to be done. John loved going to Shipshewana, Indiana to auction off his own goods. He was there in Shipshewana two years ago, at the age of 86, hauling, setting up and auctioneering his own merchandise! John loved fishing, hunting, gardening, working in his yard, watching drag racing, and of course attending auctions. He was such a joy to his family and his humor could light up a room. His family loved hearing all of his old stories. John was a member of the First Congregational Church of Otsego, and he loved his church family. He had attended Baptist churches in Phoenix, and also in Plainwell and Otsego. He was a sweet, fun-loving, God-fearing and gracious Christian man who will always be remembered for his faith in Christ, unconditional love for his family and friends and his giving spirit. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Annabell Thurston. Also surviving are his children, Patricia (Rodger) Bolen of Kalamazoo, Sandra Ambs of Parchment, and John Thurston, Jr. of Otsego; grandchildren; Kelly, Andy, Sarah, Laura, Crystal and Danielle; 8 great-grandchildren; and brother James (Nadine) of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Roger Ambs. Funeral services were held on September 14, 2017. The family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the First Congregational Church of Otsego.

A visionary group of Plainwell residents saw great possibilities for the vacated hospital building. Under the leadership of Forrest Burchfield, the team of John Gores, Edmond Cance, Leon Hoke, and Tyler Riggin put together a plan to convert the facility into a home for senior citizens. Financially, renovations were made possible through the generous funds of Frank J. Scott’s estate after his passing in 1957. When establishing the William Crispe Community House it was stated “It is the belief of the Senior Citizens Board that the problem of the aged is not restricted to the destitute or infirm, but is a problem created by the comparative isolation and loneliness of the older person in today’s living pattern. His or her need is for companionship, independent living, stimulus, fulfillment of interests and relief of housekeeping cares. The Senior Citizens idea, therefore, pays attention to the active, able-bodied elderly person, with the aim of extending the period of activity and alertness. The main objective is to provide a pleasant place for congenial individuals to live. Every effort will be made to avoid an institutional atmosphere.” In 1961 the City of Plainwell transferred hospital property to a volunteer non-profit board that is responsible for its maintenance and operation. In February of 1962 the first residents moved into William Crispe Community House. For fifty years we have been serving the people of Plainwell and the surrounding area.
