THE † IN “CROSS COUNTRY” “… Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross,” Hebrews 12:1-2

They run through rain, mud, sleet, wind, extreme heat and extreme cold conditions; up hills, down hills; over ruts, holes in ground and hard pavement, following a white chalk line determined to win a race. I am talking about cross country runners. This Sunday (September 8, 2013) Pastor Joe Shaler and I will be preaching a sermon together entitled “The Cross in Cross Country.” The cross is the symbol of our faith. The cross represents God’s love, God’s salvation and His victory over death. We will talk about how faith in Christ is much like running a race. Jesus ran His race with confidence, poise, power, peace and resolve. He endured rejection, opposition, suffering, pain, persecution and death as He crossed the finish line with faith, hope and love. The race begins when we choose to follow Jesus Christ (salvation, new birth, conversion). In this race called discipleship, we have … ...an example (Jesus Christ) ...an inspiration (all of our spiritual mentors) ...a means (divine grace, prayer, worship and the sacraments) ...a goal (serving the needs of others; leading others to Christ) ...a destination (Heaven; eternal life) Apostle Paul talked about spiritual warfare, the battle between good and evil, flesh and spirit, darkness and light. Lorena ‘Rene’ SEEKMAN

AGE 74 – OTSEGO, MI Rene passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 at her home. Rene was born October 13, 1938 in Parchment to Clayton and Ethel (Taylor) Warner. She was very artistic and in her leisure time enjoyed painting, water colors, pencil drawing, ceramics and had a great sense of humor. Rene was employed as a cook at Pipp Hospital in Plainwell where she worked for several years. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Stanley Seekman; her children, Annie Staton, Debbie Moore, Danny Tyrie, Deanne, Kelly Northrop, Laura Ferrara; 9 grandchildren, Katy, EliMae, Hannah, Danny Jr., Mary, Jacob, Jaqueline, Alex and Wally; a sister, Lila (Lynn) Rake of Wayland; several nieces and nephews. Joyce BAKER

AGE 79 – OTSEGO, MI Joyce passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013. Joyce was born June 17, 1934 in Kalamazoo, MI the daughter of Gerald and Minnie (Arendson) Langeance. Joyce worked for Bruce’s Market for about 10 years before starting at Brookside Market for 17 years; she then worked at Karen’s Daycare before starting her own daycare, Wee World Daycare, which she ran out of her home for 13 years. In her leisure time Joyce enjoyed knitting, crafts, camping and baking. She had been a Girl Scout leader in Otsego and was a member of the Otsego Church of God for over 25 years. On December 4, 1954 in Otsego she married Raymond Baker who survives. Also surviving are 6 children, Kathi (Dave) Tice of Allegan, Kevin (Tina) Baker of Allegan, Kris Baker of Anderson, IN, Kim Baker of Allegan, Ken Baker of Allegan and Kyle (Lori) Baker of Otsego ; 8 grandchildren, Brian Tice, Amy Brink, Jerry Baker, Jason Baker, Matthew Baker, David Baker, Jamie Myers and Angela Boyett; several great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Barbara Michaels and Marlyn Langeance both of Otsego; a half-brother Scott Langejans and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Karolyn Baker, a brother, Don Langeance and grandson, Kenneth Ray Baker II. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Otsego Church God on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 7:00P.M. with Pastor Stephen Burrow officiating. AGE 73 – PLAINWELL, MI Rolly passed away at Borgess Hospital, surrounded by family members on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Roland was born to Russell & Ardith Rinehart on November 18, 1939 at Borgess Hospital, in Kalamazoo, MI. Roland was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and 3 brothers, Larry Rinehart, Gene Rinehart and Paul Rinehart. Besides his wife of 16 ½ years, Amanda “Amy” Rinehart, he is survived by his 2 daughters, Rolanda Doud (Rick), Crystal Rinehart, a grandson, Brandon Taylor, a granddaughter, Katie Hays, and a great granddaughter, Aliana Taylor. He is also survived by his 2 sisters, Carole Hauschuldt (Edwin), Delores Wright (Kenneth), cousins and many nieces and nephews. Roland lived in Plainwell and was employed in Otsego at RockTenn Paper Company from 1977 to 1995. He was a member of First Baptist of Otsego where he was baptized in 1980. Roland was known as quite the jokester when he was a child, but later served his country in the military. He had quite a love for music and shared a band “The Peace Makers” with his brother Paul. He loved to perform and sign Karaoke when he was able. His friends and family loved to hear him perform, as he touched so many lives with his music. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be spread at his Aunt and Uncle’s farmhouse where he shared such wonderful memories as a child and throughout his years.

Donald C. HIMELRICK, Sr.

AGE 83 – PLAINWELL, MI Donald passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in Allegan. Mr. Himelrick was born August 4, 1930, to Earl and Lillian (Chalmers) Himelrick. Don graduated from Northeastern University and Burdett College, both in Massachusetts. For many years he was employed as comptroller/treasurer, first with Cabot, Cabot and Forbes in Boston, MA, and later with Meyer C. Weiner of Kalamazoo. Don loved his family. In his leisure time he enjoyed photography, cooking, camping, fishing, swimming and collecting toy trains. He had helped to establish the Kalamazoo Toy Train Co. Don was a member of the Assembly of God, Plainwell, where he served as church treasurer and director of the church’s homeless shelter. On May 8, 1955 in Middleton, MA he married Loretta Luzinski, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters and a son, Joyce (John) Davis of Otsego, Sharon Dolfin of Bloomingdale, Lauren (Mark) Witsaman of Grand Rapids and Donald Chalmers (Bernadette) Himelrick, Jr. of Plainwell; 11 grandchildren, Michael, Angela, Danita, Nathaniel, Casey, Catherine, Donald III, Lillian, Blaise, Mara and Conrad; siblings, Robert (Carolyne) Himelrick of Florida, David Himelrick and Gail (Peter) Smith, both of Massachusetts; several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Don may be made to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission.
