Kick off the season with an interesting Iguana, a video game favorite Pixel Block Character and the geometrical world of architecture as we draw the Notre Dame Cathedral. Later, students will immerse themselves in the seasonal spirit as they learn still life technique of pumpkins, draw a detailed Scarecrow, and draw a silly but challenging Patterned Bat. Finally, get ready for winter as we turn out a “sweet” drawing of a gingerbread house (almost good enough to eat!). We’ll draw these (and many more exciting lessons!) while we improve creative and critical thinking skills today’s students need. So what are you waiting for? Sign up now!

Over 100 Chisago Lakes Teachers Trained in LETRS, Leading the state in the Science of Reading!

At Chisago Lakes School District, we are deeply committed to the mission, “Learning for All ” This includes equipping every child with the ability to read. Learning to read is an essential skill to be successful in school and in life. For the last three years, cohorts of teachers and administrators have been participating in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) by Dr Louisa Moats and Dr Carol Tolman. Over 100 teachers have been trained, spending a minimum of 64 hours each year, reading, watching, and observing the science of reading The training is a multi year commitment, so in the 2022 23 school year, another 94 teachers will either start or continue their training. Four district teachers are also statewide recognized trainers of LETRS, so we have the expertise right within the district!

This intense training provides teachers with the most effective instructional practices that are aligned with the Science of Reading. As teachers are learning, they are implementing new practices in their reading lessons and discussing the results with their colleagues

LETRS is the most sought out training around reading in the nation right now Chisago Lakes is a leader among the nation in its implementation Just recently, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) provided Chisago Lakes School District with a one time funding source to hire a full time K 5 Literacy Instructional Coach to support the teachers with their implementation of LETRS. We are the only district in the state receiving this funding. We are excited to announce that Taylors Falls elementary teacher, Michelle Rockenback, has accepted the position She will observe classes, model lessons, co teach, and work with teachers on how to make the lessons more effective for students Michelle will also serve on the local LETRS team Having in person support of LETRS implementation will be essential for continued success.
