BLACKTOWN CLD

New movement explores future living options

BLACKTOWN could emerge as Australia's first Central Living District (CLD) in the not-so-distant future, provided the community is able to convince authorities of its feasibility. A new movement has emerged with the aim of creating a think tank for ideas for the future development of Blacktown and in particular the CBD. Blacktown MP Stephen Bali under whose leadership community members are meeting to express their opinions on redesigning Blacktown as a model place, believes that Central Living Districts as opposed to Central Business Districts is the way forward for Blacktown. On March 31, more than 60 stakeholders, from different walks of life, attended a workshop at the ACU campus in Blacktown to brainstorm ideas for shaping Blacktown’s future. More: page 10.

Students and dream degrees

THREE Western Sydney students including one form Riverstone, have started degrees at the University of Sydney thanks to the new highly sought after MySydney scholarships.

The students are:

• Mia Nikolic, 17, from Mt Pritchard who is studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy with Master of Pharmacy practice.

• Earl Jamsek, 18 years, from Riverstone who is studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy.

• Mohammad Reha, 30, from Auburn who came to Australia on a humanitarian visa and is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Philosophy.

The University of Sydney has hosted its biggest-ever Welcome Program as students, including the Western trio, began to arrive on campus for the start of the academic year.

Held over nearly three weeks in February, the extended Welcome Program includes orientation events to help new students get started, workshops for continuing students as they transition into their next year, information sessions and fun social events for all students.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott said it was a milestone moment for the University with most students to be on campus for Semester One.

“Three years after the pandemic first hit our community, we’re

giving students our biggest and best welcome to campus life – whether they’re returning or coming to campus for the first time,” Professor Scott said.

“This is a lively time in the University calendar when students can make new friends and reconnect with old ones, work out what their areas of interest are and find their kindred spirits.

“We want our students’ lives to be changed by their positive experiences here at Sydney – not just by what they study, but through the people they meet and the connections they make.

MySydney students

“We have an incredible line-up to give our students a taste of how exciting uni life can be, as well as online orientation events for those who unfortunately can’t make it in person.”

The University also hosted a

special welcome for the first cohort of students beginning their degrees through the MySydney Entry and Scholarship scheme.

An immediate commitment of the University’s new 10-year strategy announced last year, the new scheme is designed to give more students the opportunity to study at Sydney by offering financial and other support to domestic students from low socio-economic areas.

“We are delighted to have made more than 1200 MySydney offers and are expecting our biggest cohort of students from under-represented areas ever to join us this year. We can’t wait to welcome them into our University community, as they engage with campus life and achieve their immense potential.

“They are part of a historic moment for the University of Sydney. We want to be a place in which all of our students – no matter where they come from – truly thrive.”

50% of locals live with diabetes

ABOUT 50% of adults in the Local Health District covering Blacktown and adjoining local government areas are living with diabetes or at risk of the condition.

Twelve per cent of adults in the Western Sydney Local Health District, about 91,500 people, have type 2 diabetes.

Another 38% of adults, or 290,000 people, are at high risk of contracting the condition.

The latest estimates are in Western Sydney Diabetes’ Year-in-Review 2022 report.

They underscore why Workers Lifestyle Group is funding a $500,000, fiveyear community campaign for diabetes prevention and early detection, says group CEO Morgan Stewart.

Workers Lifestyle Group, in partnership with Western Sydney Diabetes and Novo Nordisk, launched the Western Sydney Changing Diabetes campaign in December. The campaign promotes regular health checks along with healthy diets, cooking and activities to its 53,000 members.

“Diabetes is Australia’s largest disease burden and Western Sydney is a diabetes hot spot, yet 80 per cent is preventable by early detection and lifestyle changes,” Mr Stewart said.

“At the campaign launch, we heard that an average 2kg weight loss can prevent 30% of at-risk people developing diabetes.

“Western Sydney Changing Diabetes is about primary prevention, for the

Western Sydney community and for members and staff at our Workers Blacktown and Workers Sports clubs. With the support of sponsorship from

Novo Nordisk, Workers Lifestyle Group is hosting fortnightly Western Sydney Diabetes detection testing for members and guests through the HbA1c blood test, which can detect the risk developing Type 2 diabetes within a few minutes. The next detection testing is on Tuesday, March 28.

Novo Nordisk has also supported the installation of SiSU health stations at the Workers and Sports Clubs for members and guests, for broader health checks and tracking of health improvement as Club patrons engage with the health promotion activities. The 12% incidence of type-2 diabetes among Western Sydney adults is signifi-

cantly higher than the state-wide average, which NSW Health estimates at 11%. About 22% of people attending Blacktown Hospital have diabetes and 30% of adults attending hospital emergency departments and GPs in Western Sydney have pre-diabetes (high blood sugar likely to progress to type 2 diabetes if untreated), according to the Western Sydney Diabetes report.

Diabetes is the main cause of preventable blindness, raises the risk of heart failure by 4 times and doubles the risk of strokes, heart attacks and dementia.

AARON PRAISES HIS STAFF FROM NOVA

Nova’s role in business success

WHEN Aaron Nolan went looking for devoted staff to work for his company, NOVA Employment provided the perfect answer.

Aaron is the Owner of Hercules Plastics in a new workshop at Arndell Park and keen employer of workers with disability through NOVA Employment.

“In any business, you need a steady workforce,” Aaron said.

“The disability means nothing as long as the work is performed in a proper manner and we teach the necessary skills,” Aaron said.

Today Hercules Plastics has developed an enviable reputation, designing, manufacturing, and servicing a wide range of high-quality plastic products for countless industries.

And staff from NOVA have played a role in the success of the business.

NOVA has been working with business owners like Aaron for 32 years and has secured thousands of jobs for people with disability across Greater Sydney.

“We aim to find jobs for people with disability that match an individual’s skills and aspirations with the roles employers are looking to fill,” NOVA’s chief executive Martin Wren said.

“There’s no point finding someone an admin job if they prefer to work outside,” explains Mr Wren.

“Before we start looking at roles, we

sit down with our clients to learn their likes and dislikes before we begin to consider what employment opportunities might interest them.”

So, NOVA Employment's success stories prove that finding the right job is not just about fulfilling a need for income. It is about finding a sense of purpose and fulfillment in one's life.

By matching job seekers' preferences and interests with suitable roles, NOVA Employment has provided thousands of people with disabilities the opportunity to pursue their passions and build successful careers.

In conclusion, NOVA Employment's 32 years of experience in securing jobs for people with disabilities demonstrates that when you find a job that you love, it doesn't feel like work.

It is essential for individuals to pursue their passions, and with the right support and opportunities, people with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to the workforce. NOVA Employment's ongoing commitment to securing employment for people with disabilities is a testament to the power of matching skills and interests to suitable roles.

WALKER TO TURBO CHARGE CBD TRANSFORMATION Masterplan for a broad vision

LANG Walker will make his mark yet again on Sydney’s west, signing a multi-billion agreement with Blacktown City Council to take on a chunk of its CBD and revitalise the state’s largest and fastest-growing city.

Walker Corporation will invest over $2B in the project, touted to bring $920M in value every year to the city’s economy. The development will deliver over 1,000 construction jobs over five years.

It follows his $3B role in helping turbo-charge the growth of Parramatta – Sydney’s second CBD – through his Parramatta Square office development, which has attracted major names including the ABC and Deloitte.

The future Blacktown masterplan will deliver the Council’s vision for the Blacktown Brain and Spinal Institute, and bring education, retail, commercial offices and a hotel to the Blacktown CBD.

“This is an exciting opportunity to deliver an urban transformation which will change the way people think about Blacktown and bring thousands of new jobs closer to where people live,” Walker said.

“Blacktown is growing fast and it needs the modern amenities and infrastructure to match, accompanied by wide open public squares and better-designed access, in and around the city for pedestrians, cars, buses and those using public transport.”

The land being sold to Walker includes the Council civic centre, Bowman

Hall, the Leo Kelly Arts Centre and part of a council-owned car park.

“Over the coming months we will be finessing the details of our masterplan to create vibrant, energised, people-friendly spaces through great architecture, careful placemaking and state-of-the-art facilities,” Walker said.

Blacktown is the most populous city in NSW, and its population of 400,000 is expected to hit 615,000 residents by 2041.

Blacktown City Council Mayor Tony Bleasdale said the opportunity to work closely with Walker on a transformation the same size as Parramatta Square is a “game changer”.

“This is the beginning of a major boom period for Blacktown. The Walker project will play a central role in Council’s long-term plan to ensure Blacktown residents have access to world-class infrastructure, education, health and open space in the heart of our city, for

our community to flourish.”

Business Western Sydney executive director David Borger said, “Walker’s vision for Parramatta Square has transformed what was a run-down section of the CBD into a vibrant city centre that is now providing tens of thousands of new jobs in premium offices, fantastic restaurants and wide-open public plazas”.

Australian Property Journal.

Council backs “modern” CBD design

BLACKTOWN City Mayor, Tony Bleasdale has welcomed a giant leap for Blacktown City in a shared vision that will transform Blacktown City.

Council has announced the signing of an historic agreement between Blacktown City Council and Walker Corporation.

Mayor Bleasdale said: “The future of the Blacktown CBD is now secure. This is our next significant step in the transformation of the City that will shape this region for generations to come.

“This is a key step for Council, and a giant leap for the community of Blacktown City.

“The CBD development by Walker Corporation will deliver over 1,000 construction jobs over five years in Blacktown city centre.

“It will permanently add 4,500 jobs in Blacktown the CBD – this is an enormous increase from the 10,000 jobs which are currently there.

The project will generate $920M economic value every year to the City, providing a huge boost the CBD businesses and the economy of the City which is currently $22.35 billion per annum, Mayor Bleasdale said,

“The need for this is clear, Blacktown City is home to a population of more than 400,000 people, and our

Council is planning to support one of the largest and fastest growing cities in Australia. We have laid the plans for projects that will support our growth and provide vital employment opportunities in Blacktown City.

“Walker Corporation has a vision

which fits perfectly in the strategic plan Council has, to build the modern Blacktown City.

“We want to see the talent and energy of Blacktown residents given access to world class infrastructure and quality jobs in the heart of the community in which they live.

“Council welcomes the experienced Walker Corporation investment into our CBD. We are confident that working together for the people and businesses of our City, we can deliver a CBD masterplan that underpins the building of a robust local economy.”

Walker Corporation’s investment into the Blacktown CBD will meet a range of objectives set by Council.

“Our residents will benefit from high value jobs generated in the CBD. Local businesses will flourish with expanded workforces, and the changes in the CBD will be a catalyst for expansion and development of new business opportunities in the City. 2

"Through careful design planning, our Council has and built strong partnerships with organisations like Walker Corporation and the Australian Catholic University.

“With those strong partnerships, Council will be a significant partner in landmark projects across the City, generating the future our City’s residents deserve,” Mayor Bleasdale said.

BLACKTOWN AUSTRALIA’S FIRST CLD?

Why not, says community

„ SASWATI MUKHERJEE

BLACKTOWN could well emerge as Australia’s’ first Central Living District (CLD) in the not-so-distant future, provided the community is able to convince the authorities of its feasibility.

A new movement has emerged in Blacktown with the aim of developing a think tank for ideas for the future development of Blacktown and in particular its CBD.

Stephen Bali MP (Blacktown), under whose leadership community members are getting together to express their opinion on redesigning Blacktown as a model place, believes that Central Living Districts as opposed to Central Business Districts is the way forward for Blacktown.

On March 31, more than 60 stakeholders, from different walks of life, attended a workshop at the ACU campus in Blacktown to brainstorm ideas for shaping Blacktown’s future.

“Let’s start creating a new place, something which is profitable for everyone,” Mr Bali said.

The need for a town square came up in a big way at the discussion, a place for people to gather either in small groups or in large numbers to celebrate major festivals.

Entertainment was identified as an essential element for a future CLD. The creation of a safe and connected environment, also came up as key factors for the new place.

“The traditional view of Central Business Districts (CBDs) with mega sized commercial buildings, hotels, shopping centres with little green space and some tokenistic Aboriginal artwork scattered around is not what the public wants,” said Mr Bali MP.

At the workshop, there were concerns that public views were not being effectively considered or that civic leaders

and landowners were presenting already drawn-up plans for a feedback-only involvement from the community.

“A case in point is the recent sale of the Blacktown Council Civic Centre and surrounding lands to Walker Corporation. Here, approximately 45 acres of land is now substantially owned by four organisations, who can potentially create their own vision of what people may or may not want,’ said Mr Bali MP in a statement issued by his office.

The recent workshop could certainly be the initiation of a grassroots movement to drive ideas to shape the future Blacktown. Several workshops, seminars, forums and brainstorming sessions in a variety of settings are planned for different locations throughout Blacktown LGA.

If a redesign is on the cards, it might

well be with a fair engagement from the local multicultural community. That means more emphasis on leisure, health and safety in an all-inclusive design, an inspirational city for the future generations to live, study, work, and raise families.

If these awareness sessions gain momentum, talk from experts would follow next to gather more expert knowledge on the subject. “The idea is to get people

involved, let them have their say in creating a new masterplan for Blacktown,” said Mr Bali MP.

CLD VS CBD: The white businessman factor

CBDs are a concept past their use-by date. The phrase “central business district” was coined by white, male, middle-class planners in Chicago in the 1930s and 40s, based on the notion that cities work most efficiently when different groups work, live and play in different precincts. CBDs were designed to be used by white, middle-class businessmen, 9-5, Monday to Friday. They were never really designed to include anyone else. (Source: Rob Stokes’ column in The Sydney Morning Herald)

The need of the hour is CLDs (Central Living District), places designed for the people and in consultation with them. An ideal CLD is a safe environment full with amenities needed for a sizeable population to live and thrive socially, economically and emotionally.

Positive space for our youth

ON Friday, March 31, Mr Stephen Bali, Member of Parliament for Blacktown with ACU Blacktown Campus co-hosted the “Future of Blacktown” workshop.

Mr Bali facilitated the discussion on the infrastructural future of Blacktown. This was a remarkably inspiring gathering of community leaders and individuals from across the Blacktown region, who share a similar heart and interest that cares about the future Blacktown.

There were several discussions and suggestions of what a central living district should look like. One of the suggestions arising that the workshop table discussions was the need to have

an open, around the clock, 24/7 Blacktown community hub/community space, which can be utilised for multiple big social events, activities and programs. This could be a space large enough for

local and international artists to perform, and the space would also be easily transformable for the use of our beloved festivals, can incorporate multicultural festivals, women’s programs, kids events, youth and young adult inspirational and motivational events through the regular showcasing of the creative arts and entertainment, music, dance, poetry, art displays and other entertainment, throughout the year. The Hub could have facilities for social study areas and opportunities for regular programs and events that support youth and alleviate the mental health of the youth, encouraging them in

obtaining or furthering their education so they too can make their contributions to society.

The Hub would be a space that regularly casts vision with the youth and “speaks life” into their situation through motivational speeches inspiring them to pursue their dreams.

The Hub would be a positive space that helps youth overcome depression, poverty, and/or substance abuse. The Hub would be a space that serves as a constant reminder of how vital the youth are to Blacktown community.

I was very encouraged by the discussions we had at the workshop. I look forward to continuing to participate in these discussions, alongside other youth, and to making further contributions in shaping the future of Blacktown.

NSW Labor sweeps across Blacktown

LABOR increased their margin across Blacktown City.

There are 6 populated NSW electorates across Blacktown City Local Government area and prior to the election there were 4 Labor and 2 Liberal seats.

As counting continues, Labor has secured Riverstone to have 5 Labor electorates to one Liberal.

Securing Riverstone for Labor with new member Warren Kirby has significantly contributed to Chris Minns Labor winning NSW Government for the first time in NSW in 12 years.

Across Blacktown City on a two-party preferred (2PP) margin, Labor secured 63.1% to the Liberals 36.9% resulting in Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Londonderry, Prospect and now Riverstone all being Labor seats with Winston Hills being the only Liberal seat.

Prue Carr, NSW Labor Deputy Leader and now Deputy Premier secured 70.8% 2PP vote across Marsden Park and Ropes Crossing.

Ms Carr said, “this is humbling to

gain such strong support but it is also reflective of how the area has been neglected with a lack of services, schools and transport by the previous Liberal Government.”

Edmond Atalla retained Mt Druitt for Labor with a 72.9% 2PP vote and was able to achieve the Rooty Hill station and Mt Druitt police station upgrades. Improvements to schools, roads and services were his key priorities for the new Government.

Stephen Bali retained Blacktown for Labor with 69.4% 2PP vote and has been vocal on the lack of health, education and over development not being supported with appropriate services by the Liberal Government in the past 12 years.

Hugh McDermott retained Prospect for Labor with 62.6% 2PP vote from the residents of Blacktown City.

His electorate crosses a few local

government areas. Mr McDermott with Stephen Bali (Blacktown) and Michelle Rowland (Federal Member for Greenway) have strongly advocated for the Prospect Highway upgrade over the past decade and were pleased that it is finally happening.

Warren Kirby secured almost a 10% swing to Labor winning the Riverstone State seat. Mr Kirby said: “this is one of the fastest growing population centres in NSW and infrastructure does not meet the demands and the failure to deliver a hospital for the Northwest has resulted in people losing trust in the Liberal Government.”

Mark Taylor held onto Winston Hills for the Liberal party despite a swing against him of 5%. The result in the Blacktown City portion of the electorate was 50.6% (2PP) which classifies his seat as one of the most marginal in the State.

$1M invested in pollutant traps

SYDNEY Water has committed to investing nearly $1M over the next 12 months to produce and install five additional Gross Pollutant Traps (GPTs), with the aim of safeguarding the city's flora and fauna.

These traps are located on storm drainage waterways and are responsible for collecting numerous plastic and other debris yearly.

Last year, a record-breaking 1500 cubic meters of waste were collected across Sydney's storm water networks by 75 traps situated throughout the city.

To put this in perspective, this is comparable to nearly 9,500 bathtubs of debris.

Sydney Water currently runs eight GPTs in the Blacktown area – one of the largest concentrations of GPTs in Sydney.

Sydney Water owns and manages about 450km of storm water channels spanning from Bondi in the east to Wentworthville in the west and Rouse Hill in the north.

Gross Pollutant Traps are specially designed structures that are strategically located to prevent debris from entering sensitive ecosystems.

Plastic, rubber balls, styrofoam, shopping trolleys, chairs, footwear, rubber tyres, and even car bumper bars are among the common types of waste caught.

The GPTs are positioned to protect areas with high wastage loads and sensitive ecosystems, including some of the city's most extensive coastal freshwater wetlands and critical endangered flora and fauna situated within them.

Sydney Water's GPT contractor recycles plastics where possible and processes organic matter for reuse as a gardening product after removing debris from the GPTs.

In the next few months, Sydney Water intends to introduce five more GPTs in various locations across the city. Three of these GPTs will be installed at the Parkside Drive Wetland site in Kogarah Bay, while the remaining two will be installed at the Milson Park Wetland site in Westmead.

According to Lorne Gurney, a Sydney Water Network Programs Scientist, Gross Pollutant Traps are incredibly beneficial in maintaining the cleanliness of our waterways. "The real benefit of this program is the environmental benefit. We see this as a tangible way to help ensure our wildlife in our wetlands continues to flourish. We all love healthy waterways," he said.

Honor for lifesaving lifeguards

FIVE Blacktown City lifeguards at Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope

have received NSW Royal Life Saving’s highest honor for saving a man’s life after he suddenly collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during a game of basketball.

The lifeguards were called to assist with the emergency situation last May, when they found the man unconscious, unresponsive and not breathing.

After contacting emergency services, the quick-thinking lifeguards performed life-saving CPR on the man for up to 15 minutes, used a defibrillator and gave him emergency oxygen while they waited for paramedics to arrive.

Their heroic actions helped the man’s breathing return by the time ambulance

crews arrived and took him to hospital. By the following day, the man had made a miraculous recovery, thanks to the swift response by the lifeguards at

the centre.

Paramedics praised the lifeguards and staff who rendered emergency first aid to the man and said: “There was no doubt that the actions of the team on that evening saved this man’s life”.

The lifeguards were commended for their efforts at the NSW Royal Life Saving Commendation Awards at Government House in Sydney.

These awards acknowledge members of the community for their acts of ‘outstanding initiative, expertise and empathy towards their fellow human beings by applying lifesaving skills in emergency situations’.

Blacktown lifeguards Craig Felstein, Jerome Golledge, Adrian Rossi, Hamish Wilson and Jaime Valencour were pre-

sented with certificates of commendation.

Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale applauded the lifeguards for their actions and said: “There is nothing more rewarding than knowing your efforts helped save someone’s life.

“The staff at Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope are extremely deserving recipients of this award.

“The outcome of this incident could have been very different if it weren’t for their level-headedness and initiative during a high-stress situation.

“They should be extremely proud of their actions that saved a life that day.”

The lifeguards also received a Values Award from Blacktown City Council in recognition of their actions.

Feelings of young people surveyed

MISSION Australia is inviting all young people aged between 15 to 19 to participate in its 22nd annual Youth Survey. This survey is the largest of its kind in Australia and aims to provide a valuable insight into the thoughts and feelings of young people. In the last survey, nearly 4,600 young people in NSW participated, and they highlighted

issues such as the environment, equity and discrimination, mental health, financial concerns, and housing instability as some of the critical issues that require attention. Mission Australia's NSW State Director, Nada Nasser, believes that the Youth Survey is an essential platform for young people to express their concerns, aspirations, and experiences and to amplify their voices

to bring about change. Survey results will be shared with government and non-government organizations and the public. The Youth Survey 2023 is open from March to August and takes only 20 minutes to complete. Participants can submit their responses online through participating schools, groups, or the Mission Australia website.

BLACKTOWN LOCAL BUSINESS AWARDS 2023

NIGHT WHEN LOCAL FINALISTS TAKE THE STAGE

It’s the business night of nights

HOLLYWOOD has the Oscars and the music industry has the Grammys – but for Blacktown City businesses, the annual night of nights is Wednesday, May 17.

That’s the date of the 2023 Blacktown City Local Business Awards.

Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe said: “There’s no doubt that local business owners and their staff work hard to provide the best possible service to their customers.

“That’s why the annual Blacktown City Local Business Awards presentation night is always such a popular event.

“It’s a glittering event that gives finalists a chance to dress up and take a break so they can enjoy an evening of entertainment, good food, relaxed chat and celebration with their colleagues and people from other businesses from around the district.”

Mr Loe said being a finalist at the Blacktown City Local Business Awards presentation night was an enormous achievement.

“It’s also a chance for businesspeople and their teams to reflect on their successes with a fun night out,” he said.

"Making it to the finalist presentation

is a great reflection on their efforts and everyone is always extremely proud to be there.

“All finalists in each category are

announced, with their picture shown on the big screen.

“It’s heart-warming to hear the deafening cheers from the crowd as everyone celebrates the achevement of all the businesses in the room.”

Today is the day when nominees for the 2023 Blacktown City Local Business Awards discover if they have made it as a finalist.

Mr Loe said the high quality of all nominees had made the job of judges incredibly difficult.

“Blacktown News, which has supported the awards as media partner for many years, will announce the finalists in each category with a special feature in today’s paper,” he said.

“This is a chance for customers and clients to see if the businesses they nominated have become finalists.”

The Blacktown City Local Business Awards are only possible with the support of Presenting Partner, Commonwealth Bank and Major Partners, Blacktown City Coucnil, Blacktown Workers Club, Westpoint and NOVA Employment and support partners, Cornerstone and White Key Marketing.

“It’s with great pleasure that I congratulate all the finalists on their achievements, on behalf of the Blacktown City Local Business Awards,” Mr Loe said.

“I would also like to thank the Blacktown City community for the huge support that they continue to show for their local businesses through the Awards every year.

“Without them, these outstanding businesses would receive the recognition which they deserve.”

and two dryers,” owner Padman Jain said.

“In the first year we took a big ad in the Yellow Pages and did so for four years.”

The laundry expanded rapidly and Mr Jain won the contract from Sydney FC from 2005 to 2020.

“Then came Western Wanderers 2012- 2019 followed by lots of industries in the local area as well as event organisers.

“We became the preferred dry cleaner of Blacktown City Council and Blacktown Police. We also supported TLC for a long time, providing the gift vouchers.”

Mr Jain said in 2008 the business started a dry-cleaning outlet as well “with a brand new set up”.

“Now we are one of the only few- or may be only one- who specialise in doing the finest Indian clothes like heavy wedding dresses and saris In the whole of Sydney.”

Mr Jain said the customers came from Canberra and the northern and eastern suburbs to have their clothes revitalised professionally by the expert team at the Laundry.

“We are very proud of our achievement and blessed with the lovely customers.”

“After some time, I came across a Carpet and Upholstery cleaning business for sale - the company being Keeping it Fresh Carpet Cleaning.

“The current owner of the business had not done any work for more than six months, with no new clients, no work on the website and no work to help the business grow.

RECONNECT FUNDING TO HELP YOUNG PEOPLE Greenway at risk of homelessness

THE breakdown of family relationships is a leading cause of youth homelessness.

That’s why the Albanese Government is investing $91.7M into youth homelessness through the Reconnect Program over the next three years.

Reconnect is a community-based early intervention and prevention program targeted towards young people who are experiencing or are at-risk of experiencing. homelessness, and their families.

Through Reconnect, young people aged 12 to 18 years (or 12 to 21 years for newly arrived youth) can access counselling, group work, mediation and specialised mental health services, to improve relationships with their family, stay at school, and participate in their local community.

This funding will deliver vital services in Greenway and right across the country to support young people and their families in times of need.

Our local Reconnect services in Northwest Sydney are:

• Level 5, 31-39 Macquarie Street, PARRAMATTA, NSW, 2150,.

• Level 1, 41-45 Rickard Road, BANKSTOWN, NSW, 2200.

• 91a Kurrajong Avenue, MOUNT DRUITT, NSW, 2770.

These locations will provide meaningful help to combat youth homelessness.

Our hope is that, through this funding, thousands of young people and their families will continue to benefit from improved family ties, engagement in education and employment, and enhanced community connections.

MARIO’S AIMING AT A WORLD RECORD…

56 hours of a continuous podcast

SASWATI MUKHERJEE

COME April 29, 2023 and Western Sydney businessman Mario Bekes will attempt to create history and enter the Guinness Book of World Records.

The 51-year- old is looking at a 56-hour marathon of continuous radio broadcast.

This, Mario says, is his way of challenging life. “I want to set an example, live life to the fullest and inspire people to believe in their abilities,” says Mario who first came to Canberra in Australia in 1998 on an official task.

He took a liking to this country and later moved to Sydney in 2003. This city has been his home since then.

With a background in military and diplomatic affairs, Mario did quite a lot of odd jobs to start off with as a migrant in a new country and eventually started his own business.

A successful businessman now, he took to podcasting as a hobby during lockdown.

A few years down the line and Mario is attempting to enter the Guinness Book of World Records – his proposed schedule would have him in his podcast studio, the ‘Secret Location’ for 56 straight hours and one minute from 11 am that day. That means he must give up on his sleep and talk continuously for the entire length of time. For him, the longest pod-

cast so far has been a two-hour stint.

“I am mentally setting myself up for the challenge, I want to create a legacy,” says Mario who is in the final stages of preparing my script. He wants to touch on his personal experiences around health, friends, family, business and maybe even his books.

Yes, Mario is a successful author of seven published books too.

At this point in time, he is still working out the nitty-gritty’s of the program, and is certainly hoping to make it as interesting as possible.

Sponsorship opportunities are avaiolbale.

The entire broadcast would be available for streaming live through his website: https:// mariosworldrecord.au/

TRAVELING AND WORKING….

We explore some cool options

„ DALLAS SHERRINGHAM

THERE has been a dramatic 12-month increase in searches for remote work locations in Australia as thousands of workers move to regional centres.

Exclusive data from Instant Offices has revealed a dramatic increase of 82% in searches for remote work since last year- confirming people are growing tired of the city office lifestyle.

With the world opening up since the covid pandemic and workers getting excited to jump back to normality, there was a buzz of excitement last year for everyone to get back to the office, but the new data shows the enthusiasm was short lived.

CMO for The Instant Group John Williams said the significant rise in searches from the Instant Offices data showed a vast surge in searches for remote working.

“It indicates a robust demand for remote and hybrid working, including both careers and workspaces that can enable this working pattern.

"Most people have moved on from the initial post-covid freedom and return to office and are now looking for a more permanent routine that strikes a comfortable work-life balance between commuting, working hours, collaboration, and flexibility.”

People are also using caravans and motorhomes as work bases as they travel around Australia.

However, the best we came across was a Meta employee who plans to work remotely from a new mega cruise ship for several years.

Austin Wells, whose job in augmented and virtual reality for Meta is fully remote, has bought a 12-year lease on the soon-to-launch MV Narrative cruise ship, which markets itself as a “residence at sea”.

Mr Wells said he spent $300,000 on a 12-year lease for an entry-level “Discover” studio on the ship, which will launch in 2025.

Living onboard the ship full-time, the tech employee will have access to a medical centre, a gym and spa, a co-working space, three swimming pools, a bank and even a farmer’s market.

It will make stops in the likes of Rome, Venice, Croatian islands and Greece, as well as travelling to the Arctic Circle, on a yet-to-be-confirmed threeyear itinerary.

“The thing that most excites me is [that] I don’t have to upend my daily routine in order to go see the world,” Mr Wells said.

“I’m going from this model where if you want to go somewhere, you pack a bag, you get on a flight, you rent a room... to now my condo, my gym, my doctors and dentists, all of my grocery stores travel the world with me.”

Passengers can choose to pay an “all-inclusive” living rate per month, meaning all meals, clinic visits, fitness classes and laundry would be covered, or simply pay as they go.

The 18-deck vessel will also feature 20 restaurants and bars, a school, library and a cinema. It is currently under construction in Split, Croatia, from where it will set sail in 2025.

Studies have shown that a stimulating working environment can help to increase productivity. Couple this with advances in mobile technology and you open up a plethora of interesting workplace solutions.

Workspace-sharing website Vrumi offers users a wide variety of locations available to hire, with current listings ranging from a private dining room in Notting Hill to a retro barge moored just outside Little Venice to a pond-side cabin

for 10 in Enfield. England.

Many larger corporates are also embracing this trend with PR giant Ogilvy & Mather adopting a carnival-themed design at their offices in China, where workers can enjoy giant Nutcrackers and merry-go-round horses suspended from ceilings.

Google’s Zurich base offers themed gondolas for team meetings alongside break-out spaces where employees can sing, dance, enjoy a massage or perfect their slam-dunk on a mini basketball court.

We have taken a closer look at some other unusual places to work around the world. Here are our top 5:

1. Sphinx ObservatoryFieschertal, Switzerland

This astronomical observatory is located above the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. Standing some 11,716ft above sea level, it is precariously balanced on a steep narrow summit high in the Bernese Alps. The observatory has accommodated a multitude of the world’s top scientists and includes living quarters, several laboratories, high-tech weather station, astronomical and meteorological domes, and a 76-cm telescope. It can only be accessed via the Jungfrau railway buried deep within the mountain and entered via James Bond-esque doors carved out of the ice.

2. Stanley Hotel - Colorado, USA

Situated in the beautiful Estes Park and nestled within the Rockies, The Stanley Hotel is said to be America’s most haunted hotel. Staff and guests alike have reported witnessing ghostly apparitions and hearing children playing in the corridors with music drifting from the Concert Hall deep into the night. The hotel is thought to have inspired Stephen King’s novel ‘The Shining’ following the author’s nightmarish stay here. Today, visitors flock to the hotel to see the strange goings-on for themselves and the hotel now employs clairvoyants and Night Spirit Tour leaders amongst its staff!

3. Village Underground –Shoreditch, East London

The Village Underground is an art collective in Shoreditch, East London where creatives can hot-desk within the four refurbished London Underground tube carriages and two shipping containers, all sitting atop a Victorian warehouse which can be hired for events. Holywell Lane Wall, the largest dedicated street art wall in London, is located just outside the warehouse and is repainted every three months by local and world-renowned artists.

4. TREExOFFICE - Hoxton Square, London

The TREExOFFICE in Hoxton was a joint initiative by Groundwork London, Artsadmin and Hackney Council and formed part of the Park Hack project in 2015. The group aimed to create more sustainable, innovative and flexi-working spaces for the local businesses and community. They teamed up with designer Natalie Jeremijenko, in collaboration with artists Shuster + Moseley, architects Tate Harmer and briefing architects Gensler, to create this eightpod tree house office space in Hoxton Square. This project has since inspired similar ventures across the world such as the TREExOFFICE build, designed by students at the University of Colorado in 2017.

5. Inventionland –Pittsburgh, USA

Davison Design & Development’s Headquarters represent America’s largest innovation factory at 70,000sq ft. The self-titled "idea incubator" is the brain-child of Davison founder and CEO, George McConnell Davison. Inventionland is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is a state of the art production facility for educational materials and corporate innovation products. It houses no less than sixteen themed workspaces, including a shipwrecked pirate ship, three running waterfalls and a castle complete with turrets and drawbridge. At Halcyon, we may not be able to boast a fire-breathing dragon to inspire our workers, but we certainly have some beautiful and unique locations, such as the Thorncroft Manor Estate in Leatherhead, Surrey which offers small businesses both flexi-working options and a permanent base.

Building a Voice for Western Sydney

WentWest, the Western Sydney Primary Health Network, is working with the community to improve health equity. Our aim is to deliver services that are co-designed by the community, for the community, and we are constantly expanding ways to improve our community relationships and partnerships.

Our West Sydney

To help listen and respond to community members in Western Sydney, we have developed an online community hub, Our West Sydney. Our West Sydney is an interactive online forum for community members, health care professionals and partners to come together and share high-quality information, ideas and events.

Facilitated by WentWest, the platform is designed to build and strengthen positive relationships and partnerships that focus on creating a healthier Western Sydney for everyone. By opening up the conversation, Our West Sydney allows you to play a role in the design of quality health care services in our region

Community-led Solutions

When is the last time that someone asked you what the most important health and social care priorities are in your community? At WentWest, we’re trying to shift the way health care is approached and bring community into the conversation about their own health.

We’re already fortunate to have great feedback from our Consumer Advisory Council, but we’re now expanding our reach and creating a series of “Community Juries”.

Community Juries

It’s called a “jury” because the group is randomly selected and representative of the community. Collectively, members will learn about a health and social issue, then debate and discuss the information to come up with recommendations.

At WentWest, we will be running our first two Community Juries in Western Sydney in August 2023. One will be a First Nations group, led by a First Nations facilitator, and the other will be multicultural. Both groups will consider information about the health and wellbeing of Western Sydney communities to provide wellinformed recommendations about what matters to communities in our region.

To prepare, WentWest is listening to communityled Advisory Panels to guide the development of the evidence and refine the language being used to describe and run these groups. Juries will be made up of Western Sydney people randomly selected from a ballot.

To take part in the ballot to be a Western Sydney Community juror scan the QR code below.

John Wick: Chapter 4 - 4 Stars

RUNNUING tiemn is epic. At 2 hours and 49 minutes, it’s a long one for sure - and particularly with the sort of film that has less story than could be expected. Instead, it’s a lengthy slugfest; with mammoth action sequences, endless shoot outs, and blood by the bucketload.

And that’s exactly what it should be. Keanu is pulling his usual Wick Schtick, grunting his way through the bare minimum dialogue they give him. Director Chad Stahleski wisely keeps him out of the first section of the film; making him more of a bogeyman than before. In particular, the scenes at the Tokyo Continental are particularly effective, with Wick standing like a painting atop the roof, hunted by everyone around the world.

It’s the newcomers, though, that really shine! Donnie Yen is an absolute standout as the blind assassin Caine. He is a complete badass, and worms his way into your heart over the course of the nearly 3 hour film despite being predominantly the villain. Perhaps most surprising is Scott Adkins, who plays the villain Killa in a fatsuit. He monologues fantastically, but more impressive is the physicality of his role. In a film filled with a heap of frankly over the top, fantastical gun violence, the fist fight between Killa and John

in a water soaked Berlin club feels the most visceral.

The fight scenes continue to be striking in this franchise. This installment continues to up the ante. There’s fantastic moments peppered throughout, but the best scenes happen in Paris - one particularly fantastic staircase sequence, a gorgeously shot overhead

gun battle in a Parisian apartment, and a tense gun battle amidst hectic traffic around the Arc De Triomphe. It’s gorgeously shot, stunningly brutal, and completely inventive - as we’ve come to expect from this franchise. Ultimately, you find yourself longing for the feel of that first John Wick. What happened to the simplicity of that mov-

Air - 4 Stars

SONNY Vaccaro (Matt Damon) works for Nike, tracking down talent that the Basketball Division can entice to wear their fledgling array of basketball shoes. He, marketing director Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman), Howard White (Chris Tucker), and the CEO of Nike Phil Knight (Ben Affleck), are all trying to use their paltry budget for the year to entice some lower tier players to join their shoe roster. But Sonny has an idea, to go after just one player and pour the whole budget into that venture; Michael Jordan.

The 3rd round draft pick famously hates Nike shoes, and is almost guaranteed to go to Adidas. In fact, his agent David Falk (Chris Messina) refuses a meeting outright.

But Sonny believes Michael has the chance to be great. He goes down to meet with Michael’s mother Deloris (Viola Davis), as he and his team break all the rules, and all the conventions, to get this future NBA star into a shoe with a swoosh on it.

Air is such an interesting film, because you can see exactly how easily it could have gone off the rails. It’s the sure hand of Ben Affleck here in the director's seat, and the script from Alex Convery, that makes certain Air never overreaches.

It never grabs for the tempting fruit around it; the mile a minute pace of a basketball game, or the tempting headlines that could be generated by having some young up and coming actor play Michael Jordan himself. Instead, it grounds itself in the core heart of this story, and one that ultimately is fascinating.

Affleck makes the imaginably staid process of designing a shoe, doing financial deals for revenue share, and enticing the family into a single meeting,

extremely fun.

He has a fantastic balance for flair and character, and delivers this melting pot of 80’s memorabilia, office politics, and adjacency to big basketball, in a very compelling way. The film gives a very lived in and authentic view of the 80’s vibe, avoiding some of the more poppy versions done in other recent fare.

Character-wise, the balance is all here. Damon delivers the lead role as the straight man, and does so with aplomb, delivering the needed inspirational

ie? More importantly, what happened to the character work?

There is nothing dialogue-wise here that could possibly match John Wick’s speech in the first film where he proclaims that, yes, he is back.

Perhaps that is because Wick has nothing to fight for here other than his own life. In the first film, John sought revenge; he was hurt, angry, and nothing could stop him.

For the last three films, this one included, his motivation is solely self-preservation; trying to save a life that, even once he saves, he barely wants to live in. Keanu had so much more to work with in that first movie, and while the action has intensified, the emotionality behind it and the simplicity behind it has gone. For that reason, no John Wick film could top that first installment.

That being said, while this film suffers by comparison to the first one in the franchise, it is still the second best in the series by a long stretch. It’s also a fitting end, and head and shoulders above the action fare offered by other modern movies.

speech as required. The dialogue may be stock standard, but Damon tackles it winningly.

Bateman plays a sort of more earnest version of his usual character, and has a number of winning jokes. Affleck’s Phil Knight is iconically 80’s, perfectly self-doubting, and a fan fave. Viola Davis, in her brief screen time, also impresses. Chris Messina is an absolute standout as the foul mouthed agent, Falk. He is frequently hilarious, completely over the top, and brings a smile to your face constantly.

Ultimately, what makes Air such a winning film is the fact that it tells an interesting story, self-contains it, and is confident in delivering what it sets out to do. The ambition here is curtailed, but in doing so it foisters a vote of confidence in the source material it’s dealing with.

The tale of this shoe deal is interesting, almost anecdotally, and Air tells it in a fun, enjoyably engaging, funny and affecting way. This movie probably isn’t going to change your life, but you’ll have a blast watching it.

John Wick, and Keanu, are back and this final film is a complete bloodbath; giving fans of the series everything they could want.
Air is the sort of simple, wholesome content that - when done well, and it is done very well here - makes an impact.

But the Volkswagen MEB-based electric five-seater will not be heading to OZ

FORD has debuted its all-electric Explorer SUV this week, with the Volkswagen-based five-seater to go on sale in Europe later this year price from €45,000 ($A72,000) plus on-road costs.

The stylish mid-sized model – which will not be offered in Australia – will be produced at Ford of Europe’s Cologne facility in Germany. It shares underpinnings with the VW ID.4, making it one of two Ford models that will stem from Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform before the end of 2024.

For the EU, Ford will offer the Explorer EV in three configurations: an entry-grade rear-wheel drive with a 52kWh battery, 350km range and 125kW output; a mid-tier rear-wheel drive with larger 77kWh battery, 540km range and stronger 210kW output; and a range-topping all-wheel drive dual-motor with the same 77kWh battery, 490km range and 250kW output.

DC fast charging can replenish the smaller battery pack at a capacity of up to 130kW, while the larger battery pack supports a charging capacity of up to 170kW. A 10 to 80 per cent charge is said to take just 25 minutes.

Ford says the Explorer EV receives its own suspension tune with a familiar MacPherson strut front and multilink rear arrangement providing a “different driving experience” to the Volkswagen derivative.

The 2024 Ford Explorer EV measures 4450mm in length, giving it a similar stature to the Honda HR-V, Nissan Qashqai or Toyota Corolla Cross. It will be offered in two model grades in Europe: Explorer and Explorer Premium, each with a generous list of standard equipment.

Ford’s 15.0-inch SYNC Move central infotainment array offers a moveable, portrait-oriented display that combines wireless app integration with a tailored audio package and advanced driver assistance technology. The screen conceals a storage cubby ahead of the centre console, which itself offers a separate compartment of 17 litres.

The “ultra-modern” interior combines premium materials and sculpted sports seats across two rows. Like many EVs, pre-conditioning of the cabin’s cli-

mate is possible, the space also boasting heated front seats and a heated steering

wheel, a massaging driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, as well as keyless

entry and start.

Further back, and with access via an optional handsfree electric tailgate, the Explorer EV provides “about 470 litres” of cargo space in five-seat mode.

Advanced driver assistance systems include assisted lane change and clear exit assist among a raft of active and passive safety systems.

“(The) Explorer is a trailblazer for a new breed of exciting Ford electric vehicles,” said Ford Model e Europe general manager, Martin Sander.

“Steeped in our American roots but built in Cologne for our customers in Europe, it is road-trip ready for the big adventures and fully loaded with everything our customers will need for their daily drives.”

Speaking to GoAuto about the possibility of an Explorer EV for Australia, a local spokesperson said simply, “while we have no plans to introduce the all-electric Explorer in Australia, we’re looking forward to sharing the next phase of our EV journey very soon”.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF CORTISOL? Tips for managing stress

CORTISOL is the hormone we release as part of the stress response. When the body perceives a threat, cortisol is released to help us respond appropriately. Now, bear in mind, as part of the animal species, a threat is something that will impact on our wellbeing or livelihood; such as a predator.

However, in this modern world, the things that threaten our wellbeing are losing our phone, not being able to connect to the internet, not finding a park when you’re running late for meeting etc.

So, you can see, it’s not difficult to be living with a chronic level of stress that can cause cortisol levels to remain elevated, which can then lead to a range of health problems.

Here are five warning signs that you may have high cortisol levels:

1. 2-4 AM Wake Up: Cortisol levels naturally peak in the early morning, helping us wake up and feel alert. However, when cortisol levels are chronically high, it can cause you to wake up between 2-4 AM and struggle to fall back asleep.

2. Hard-to-lose Belly Fat: Cortisol can contribute to the accumulation of fat, particularly around the midsection. High cortisol levels can make it difficult to lose

belly fat, even with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

3. Cravings for Salty and Sugary Foods: High cortisol levels can cause you to crave salty and sugary foods regularly. This is because cortisol triggers the release of glucose, which can cause cravings for foods that provide a quick energy boost.

4. Exhausted but Energized: High

cortisol levels can cause you to feel exhausted and wired at the same time. You may feel like you are always on edge, even when you are tired and need to rest.

5. No Morning Hunger: Cortisol is responsible for suppressing hunger in the morning, so when cortisol levels are high, you may not feel hungry when you wake up. This can make it difficult to get the nutrients you need to start the day.

Things you can do to reduce stress levels:

1. Exercise… choose exercise that you love to do.

Research has shown that low-intensity exercise lowers cortisol levels.

2. Sleep… make sure you get enough.

Research tells us that 7 to 8 hours sleep is ideal to allow your brain to complete its cleaning process. Also, you need to get enough sleep.

3. Do things that you enjoy and find relaxing.

Focus on these joyful activities –like reading a book, listening to your favourite music, gardening, going for a walk, matching movies, or whatever these special things are for you.

4. Re-think regular alcohol. TV and movies constantly show us people engaging in alcohol as a destress tool, where in fact, it has an opposite effect of the body. The way to go is to cut back on alcohol.

5. Avoid the late-night news just before bed.

Anticipatory stress is a major problem for many people. Research has identified that bad news can increase your stress levels and interfere in a major way with healthy sleep.
