Student Success Story Oscar Hernandez Oscar Hernandez grew up in Sunnyside, WA. “It was really tough growing up so I figured there has to be something better than just a farming community.” His passion for science led him to Washington State University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Basic Medical Science. After moving to Spokane, Hernandez looked through job listings and noticed a demand for phlebotomists: “I thought ‘this is perfect, I can blend both my passions’” which are science and human interaction. “I found out the hard way it’s really hard to get into the healthcare field without a license or certificate” said Hernandez. He researched local Phlebotomy programs and was drawn to the hands-on approach that SCC offers. The Center for Workforce & Continuing Education’s 10-week Phlebotomy program is offered twice a year through Spokane Community College, certifying 20 students in both the fall and winter quarters. The course is competitive entry, with a waiting list and CWCE is currently considering opening up an additional offering during the summer quarter. Hernandez joined the wait list and was eventually offered a spot for the fall 2015 session. Once accepted into the phlebotomy program, Hernandez said his first thought was, “how am I going to pay for this?” During the mandatory orientation, Hernandez learned of WorkSource and funding options that are available to new students. Hernandez took it upon himself to contact the career and training specialist at WorkSource and was able to have the majority of his tuition funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). After completion of the course, Oscar accepted a phlebotomist position at Deaconess Hospital. “I felt the program [at SCC] definitely prepared me for my phlebotomy career” Hernandez reflected. “We did a lot of in class lectures which helped understand the theory and practice behind it, but then we also did a lot of labs.” The combination of theory and labs helped prepare Hernandez for the workforce, and ultimately it was the combination of experience and his passion for the subject that earned him his current position: “If you’re passionate about what you’re doing, I think that’s going to show a lot in your interview.” For more information on the CCS Phlebotomy program, or to be placed on the interest list, please contact Sandy Saperstein at cehealthandmed@ccs.spokane.edu

Class Cancellations
If you register for a class and cannot attend, please call in advance to cancel. This makes it possible for another student to enroll. Students are responsible for initiating the paperwork for withdrawal and refund requests. A $7 processing fee is deducted from the refund amount. All refunds require at least two weeks for processing. The following policies apply whether a student attends class or not.
All class offerings are subject to change. Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) cannot guarantee class offerings, designed times or specific instructor. CCS reserves the right to cancel any continuing education class and may reduce class hours or cancel classes due to low enrollment. Fees for classes cancelled by CCS will be refunded automatically. Some class enrollments are limited due to space and equipment.
• 100% refund for classes and workshops cancelled by the college. • 100% refund for student-initiated withdrawals three business days prior to the first day of class (including online classes) unless noted in class description. • No refund granted two business days or less prior to the start of a class. A business day is 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday.
Disability Support Services Persons with a disability requiring any auxiliary aids or accommodations should contact one of our Disability Support Services offices in advance of class.
