BEHIND THE PAGES COMMUNITY NOW! MAGAZINE
Krista Malden, a multifaceted individual with a passion for storytelling, connecting people, industry, and generations through building community.
Krista is a mom of two, the founder of Community Now! Magazine, a drummer, teacher, storyteller, and overall rockstar. She was nominated and became a UN SHEInnovator, Won the 2020 Women of Inspiration Cultural Ambassador Award, and a 2022 Mental Health Advocacy Awareness Media Award, along with being nominated for other innovation and women’s awards.
She emphasizes the power of music and stories as a universal language, inspiring readers and driving them to be better as an entire community because she knows “It takes a community.”
Krista “connected the dots backwards”, realizing that storytelling and connecting people were the key to her purpose which led her to create a platform for businesses, education, community, and innovation… Community Now! Magazine & their events push the community to ENGAGE. INSPIRE. EDUCATE. TOGETHER.
Krista knows the power of community and collaboration are the key to everyones success. “Community Now! Magazine was built on collaboration between various communities, community members and local businesses.” – Krista Malden. “We need to continue to collaborate so that everyone wins, we need to listen, elevate and cheer each other on through our journeys because ‘it takes a community’ to be successful and that is why we need Community Now!”
“
Until thought is linked with purpose there is no intelligent accomplishments.”
– James Allen.

Dear Community,
First, THANK YOU. Celebrating 5 years of storytelling is a remarkable accomplishment and would not be possible without this community.
Over the past 5 years I have had the opportunity to meet remarkable people who inspire change, create opportunities and who are moving the needle! It has been remarkable to watch the community collide, collaborate and make change in various ways across multiple communities. Keep creating collisions!
When I launched Community Now! Magazine in August 2018, my vision was to create a platform for people to connect to various industries and people outside of their everyday communities through storytelling and events because the more we learn about each other, the better we can and will be. BUT what happened over the past 5 years is we have built a strong diverse community of people who show up for each other, support each other, learn from each other, and create opportunities for everyone! REMARKABLE!
I am so proud of Community Now! Magazine, and the collisions it has created… and I am excited for WHAT’s NEXT. I am excited to watch the collisions continue within the community and beyond. We need to keep storytelling, connecting and showing up for each other and keeping growing the community.
… we NEED Community NOW!
Mother Theresa said: “DO NOT WAIT FOR LEADERS. DO IT ALONE, PERSON TO PERSON.”
John Cage said: “BEGIN ANYWHERE.”
THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed, sponsored, supported, participated in events events and read & shared CN! Magazine. We have done this!
This issue… showcases THE PERSONS WHO helped create Community Now! WHO pushed me to be better and WHO helped elevate MY Vision along with Community Now! Magazines voice. Community Now! is OUR VOICES together. I am looking forward to another year of storytelling, learning, creating what is next, and collaborating in all things!
Thank you.

The Superpower Project is an ongoing monthly column in Community Now! Magazine created by Blaise Hunter.
“The Superpower Project is about highlighting various challenges or “kryptonites” facing people and helping us neutralize their effect on us.” - Blaise Hunter Every Issue Blaise explores various topics that impact everyone, while giving advice on how to face our kryptonites, and turn things into our own superpowers!
Blaise is a true Superhero and will always breath fire!
The WIN Awards is an inclusive platform geared to support and celebrate the power of being influential. Women, non-binary, 2-spirit, and gender-diverse people all over Nanaimo are impacting the world in positive and revolutionary ways. They are mothers, parents, leaders, entrepreneurs, business owners, creators, STEM pioneers, activists, artists, tradespeople, philanthropists, and so much more.
The goal with the Women of Influence
Nanaimo Network is to normalize the perception of people in these roles by championing what they do, who they are, and their character rather than the gender they identify with. Inclusion lies in the contrast between a sense of belonging and the pressure for people to “fit in” to groups, communities, or cultures.

BEHIND THE EVENTS
OKT SOBER
Fest
Jayme Minor is a successful entrepreneur, sobriety coach and aspiring musician/actor. He’s also the trumpet player AKA “TrumpetGuy” for the Calgary Flames NHL team (we’re not joking). Jayme credits sobriety for saving his life, and strongly believes in the concept of “24/7 sober-fun;” essentially, learning to enjoy life completely through sobriety and accepting your true self. Outside of all that, Jayme is a partner in MAXgreen, one of Canada’s most successful window and door companies, and a founding partner of the exotic car club, Endorphin Dream Garage.
Jayme has become a partner to Community Now! Magazine, and will be the host of DESIGN the SHIFT and will be lighting up the dance stage at our pink and green gala with his original songs. He will also be a part of the 6th annual mental health event in December and will continue to bring community together through sober fun, music, storytelling and being an advocate for change!
“
Performing brings a community together. You have a leader up on stage, offering themselves completely and showing the audience firsthand it is ok to be the real you. It gives the audience a chance to share something special, something personal and something amazing! It can spark creativity, inspiration, and togetherness.”
– Jayme Minor
“
Community is important because we need to be able to reach out for help, we cannot do things alone, without community and support I may not be here today given my severe struggle with addiction. It is because of community I had the courage to ASK for help and make the changes I needed to make.”
We did it! We hosted Calgary's first 100% alcohol and drug free music festival that saw over 300 people in attendance and raised over $30,000 for individuals in need of counselling and addiction recovery services - all while showcasing independent artists and speakers, themes of mental health, community healing, the benefits of sobriety and having “sober-fun."
This year our goal is to raise over $100,000. By partnering with us, you directly contribute to breaking down barriers and providing muchneeded support for those seeking help. Jayme is deeply committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in their journey towards recovery, and your sponsorship helps him turn this vision into a reality. Your generosity enables us to expand our reach, increase awareness, and offer essential resources to those who may otherwise struggle to access the necessary support.
Together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of individuals battling mental health and addiction challenges. TO SPONSOR of GET INVOLVED EMAIL:

“My favorite part of my job is knowing the impact it is making, seeing the responses online and having complete strangers share their personal stories with me on-site. It shows I've been successful in creating a trust through branding. No Fixed Address is here for you, whether you've got the dough, or you just need some.” – Tyler Melnyk
“Mental health is important for me because I work with children in a school setting where the rubber hits the road. And now along with teaching I have started a PAY IT FORWARD mobile soup kitchen.
I've seen children who I just recently taught who are living rough, having no social or personal connection, losing their self-worth and their dignity, and because of this their futures seem stunted. However, I know with a strong community there are ways we can help. There's more that can be done for everyone. Preventative and not reactionary.” – Tyler Melnyk

Christina is an Empowering Peer Support trainer and facilitator who helps her clients build their mental health toolkit by focusing on what is strong instead of what is wrong.
Christina collaborates with CN! Magazine. She contributes as a writer, sponsor & speaker for events, and supporter.
Why is creating space for people important?
Creating space for people is important because we all have a common need to be understood and feel we belong. Creating brave and safe spaces is essential to building a positive community. We not only need to create space, but we need to invite people in.
What advice can you give someone building/creating an organization or business?
When you fail, “fail forward.” Learn from mistakes and move forward. See mistakes as learning opportunities and a critical part of the growth process. Keep putting yourself out there differently and keep your eye on your strengths because they will get you through the hard bits. Focus on the strong, not the wrong. “Be tenacious in engaging your strengths, relentless in following your passions, and fiercely unyielding in living your dream!” (Abe Brown)

Since Garbo joined our family … well, it has been remarkable. Our son Ayden is noticeably more confident, outgoing, social, and frequently more content day-to-day. Ayden has come to depend on Garbo for emotional support, to create personal space, and he relies on Garbo for a sense of safety.
Garbo creates a role of responsibility and a sturdy place for Ayden to “buddy up.” This has helped establish and maintain routines that have eased transitions and provided the stability that Ayden responds to.
When together in public, Garbo provides a greater sense of safety for us. It has allowed us to explore activities and places we would not have

contemplated before. When overstimulated, Ayden uses Garbo tohelp communicate his feelings before he can verbalize his emotions. With Garbo, he doesn’t need to use his words. He will stop and put his face into Garbo’s neck. He puts his hands under her vest to feel her breath if feelings escalate. Having these cues has significantly decreased the frequency of his attempts to bolt. Not all the outings go smoothly but having Garbo assist in anchoring Ayden is a huge stress reliever.

COLLABORATION
CALGARY INSTITUE OF COUNSELLING
Jenn Betts, founder of the Calgary Institute of Counselling.
Jenn is a mother, wife, community advocate for change, advocate and voice for universal mental health care and knows that collaboration and community are important for creating a positive environment for everyone to succeed.
Jenn has always had a passion for helping people who are struggling.
Jenn began her career working with youth and soon fell in love with the one-on-one conversations she was having. She could see the impact of her words on their lives. She enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts with a major of counselling psychology in the hopes of learning how to better help people. She completed her practicum helping women facing unplanned pregnancies. Once she completed her master’s she became a Registered Provisional Psychologist.
Jenn grew to love her work with clients, doing deep work with them and helping them find long lasting healing. As Jenn continued to work as a psychologist and attending personal therapy herself, she realized that changes needed to be made. There were too many psychologists that were unhealthy themselves and not helping clients properly. So, she began to work towards her vision and dream of healthy psychologists and proper client care, which led to the opening of the Calgary Institute of Counselling.
Jenn has dreams of changing mental health in Canada. In the Spring of 2022 Jenn meet with the NDP to lobby them to implement universal mental health care. Jenn continues to push for universal mental health care. She continues to implement her dream to see individuals become strong and ethical psychologists.
“One Voice is where change starts, two voices together is when the change starts to happen… let’s continue to support eachother and make change. Jenn and her team are setting a remarkable example of pushing for change. And Community Now! Is excited to work with them to see how we can make an impact in peoples lives together.”
The Mission of the Calgary Institute of Counselling is twofold. Firstly, it seeks to provide excellent training for practicum students and Provisional Psychologists in Alberta. It aims to produce Psychologists who are excellent in the field. Psychologists who strive to do deep healing work with their clients.
The other mission of the Calgary Institute of Counselling is to help clients uncover the root of their difficulties. When client and Psychologist can uncover the root of the problem and “pull it from the root”, clients are more easily able to find true and long-lasting healing. It is only through deep work that clients can truly heal.
The Institute values empathy, kindness, healing, fun and excellence. These values are played out everyday at the agency. Yes, these values are shown to clients daily. Counsellors strive to show these values in each session. However, they are also shown amongst staff. The Institute has created a culture where excellence is strived for each day. However, walk by the training room and you will hear laughter and kindness amongst the staff. We treat our fellow staff members as we treat clients, with empathy, kindness, and respect.
The Calgary Institute of Counselling is well on its way to being an industry leader in ensuring that quality counselling is done by strong and ethical Psychologists.
The Calgary Institute of Counselling is partnered with Community Now! Magazine for Design the Shift & the 6th Annual Mental Health event. Jenns voice and knowledge will be shared with the whole community.

COLLABORATION
Collaboration forms various collisions across every community.
COLLABORATION: the definition of collaboration is generalized as two or more people working together (to create and or build something.) LET’S take the word collaboration and make it work to its fullest.
Collaboration … working together, promoting eachother, connecting eachother, lifting eachother up and helping each other reach our end goals! Collaboration can be as simple as being each others’ cheerleaders and connecting eachother to the right people, or it can be as complex as joining two businesses to build something new!
Collaboration is something we can all do together.

IN THE COMMUNITY!
Welcome to Alberta’s first workplace resource centre for workplace Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)! Workplaces across Canada are facing major workforce demographic changes with a projected loss of 25% of their current workforce over the next 10-13 years…is your workplace ready?
At the GEDI (Gateway to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Hub, we help Alberta workplaces build capacity, confidence, and community to attract and engage diverse talent while developing their EDI capacity and sustainable workforce strategies.
The GEDI-Hub is a Gateway Association Initiative, fully funded by the Government of Canada, and is offered at no cost to workplaces.
NEW PODCAST brought to you by the GEDI Hub. Featuring Stephen & Sarah
The White Lives Matter Always Podcast (AKA The WLMA Podcast) is exploring diverse perspectives of Whiteness in the White-Settler-Colonial society of Mohkinstsis-Calgary, Treaty7Alberta and Turtle Island-North America more broadly.
This is the first episode of up to 12 that Stephen and Sarah have agreed to do. This episode explores White shame and other phenomena associated with White Supremacy.

WHAT IS EQUITY?
Equity aims to ensure that there is fair treatment, access, equal opportunity, and advancement for everyone. Equity identifies and removes barriers that may be preventing people from fully participating – or benefitting within a workplace.
Equity is an important consideration when designing internal workplace processes, culture, and delivery of resources. Equity directly affects employee retention and engagement. Equity allows workplaces to better value and leverage differences and accesses diverse perspectives.
WHAT IS DIVERSITY?
Diversity is all the ways that people are different from one another. These differences may include race, ethnicity, religion, marital/family status, sex, gender identity or expression, disability, sexual orientation, age, class, and/or socio-economic situations.
Diversity influences ideas, perspectives, and values, guided by people’s lived experiences and realities. Workplaces that lack new perspectives are statistically not as competitive and innovative as compared to those workplaces that embrace diversity. Diversity is about creating a workforce with a wider variety of ideas and approaches.
WHAT IS INCULSION?
Inclusion builds a place and a culture where everyone feels welcome by actively inviting everyone to share their perspectives and participate. It’s very much about behavior and the ways people interact with each other. In an inclusive workplace, employees are given the opportunity to voice opinions, not feeling excluded based on their differences. Exclusion, on the other hand, can be extremely destructive in a workplace – leading to high employee turnover and lost productivity.

“
CN! is the place where collisions happen. The REAL power of an engaged community comes from the number of unlikely collisions between two or more people, groups or ideas leading up to actionable change. CN! is the only place where that happens across industries, borders, and generations. That is an energy that I cannot resist.” – Stacy Richter
