One day I think a small shaft of light made its way through to my brain and something clicked inside me and I asked myself how long I could continue to live like this and where my life was heading to. 6 // Community Now!

rriving back in Belfast from England, I want to say that I was filled with hope, but I wasn’t. I didn’t have any direction. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was probably happy and excited about the change in location and about the prospect of being surrounded by people and places and accents that were familiar to me. My mum loves me and naturally has always done her best for me. She was no different back then - she gave me a place to stay, she gave me food and she even went so far as to find a job for me. As a bartender. I guess, looking back, that she had no idea that that wasn’t the most healthy environment for me. Of course I thought differently. It was a comfortable place for me, almost like my natural habitat. I could be with like minded people and get paid for it. Maybe I didn’t even give it any thought back then - I think my life at that time was just to make it from day to day. I don’t mean in a survival way, more that I didn’t have a plan or any ambition.
