With nails popping up through the floor and dead spots causing problems, it was time for a new gym floor at All Saints Catholic School. A variety of fundraising efforts made the project possible, and now the kids at the Kenosha school have a bright, shiny new gymnasium floor on which to play a variety of indoor sports.

Televisions were placed throughout the facility and tickets were sold for community members to come in and watch the game between two bitter border rivals on the gridiron. On June 9, the happy day arrived. The day after school ended, Jason Thomas Flooring Company began tearing out the original floor. The company has created the floor for NCAA Final Fours, and locally installed the existing floor at Carthage College.

“We felt very comfortable with them,” said Lesnak of the flooring company. “On August 1, the floor could be walked on. New carpeting on the stage and at the entrance is a part of the renovation, too.” Adult basketball and volleyball groups, the school teams at the newly named All Saints Catholic School, and other civic events will do their thing on the new wooden floor. Work on the new gym floor took nearly two months.

It’s tip-off 7th Grade Boys Fans who attend All Saints seventh grade boys basketball games this winter will not be bored. “Intensity and defense will be our strengths this season,” said coach Matt Skurski, who added that gelling as a unit will be a key to the team’s success. “We’ll work on team chemistry, being that many of the boys are playing together for the first time.”
“Rohit’s defense is getting better, as is his offensive game. If he builds his confidence up, he will be a nice addition to the team. Dario is the rock of the team, a good role player. He sets a lot of picks but is looking to score more this year. Joe is a good shooter and he hustles on defense. He has a good concept of the grand scheme we are trying to play.
“Paul is the man in the paint and he gets every rebound. He will be averaging a double-double again this year for us. Team members include guard Lorenzo Caselena, guard Jacob Charon, forward David Davison, center Jack Grosz, center Jacob Gerovac, forward David Kollman, forward Harry Orth and guard Aaron Schlitz. “Lorenzo Caselena has speed and the ability to play both ends of the court at high tempo,” Gonzales said. “Jacob Charon has good court vision, great ball control, speed and competitiveness; David Davison is a defensive specialist with rebounding skills; and Jack Grosz has strong offensive and defensive talent and competitiveness.” “Jacob Gerovac is a strong rebounder with middle presence defensively, David Kollman is consistent offensively and defensively, Harry Orth has multiposition capabilities and speed, and Aaron Schlitz has ball-handling capabilities.”
“I feel our team’s strengths will be our speed and tenacious defense,” said coach Sue Backus. “We also have height underneath the basket, which will help in rebounding. I feel our team’s weakness is the lack of practice that we have had to work on the fundamentals.” The 10 girls on the roster are center/forward Sara Backus, guard Claire Bevec, guard Tommie Capelli, guard Andrea Hubli, guard/forward Erin Loewen, guard Jordan Richards, guard Mia Ruffalo, center/forward Amanda Steele, forward Samantha Richards and forward Joelle Tarczewski. Backus’ assistant coach is Kim DeWitt. “Coach DeWitt and I are looking forward to seeing our team grow in both knowledge and skill of the game of basketball,” Backus said. “All of the girls are a joy to coach and we are anxious to get the season started.”

All Saints 6th grade boys Red runs out of steam versus Prairie Red After holding a first-quarter lead and staying close for much of the game, the All Saints 6th grade boys Red team dropped a 37-28 decision to Prairie Red Dec. 3. Prairie used a high-powered fast break to secure most of its points and captured many second-chance points on offensive rebounds. Looking ahead, All Saints 6th grade Red will use practice time to improve on getting back on defense to prevent easy fast breaks, defensive rebounding to reduce second-chance points and finishing off layups when easy baskets are available. All Saints 5th grade girls Red bows to St. Lucy Gold The All Saints 5th grade girls Red team put up a strong fight in its first game of the season, but dropped a heartbreaker, 10-8, to St. Lucy Gold Dec. 3. Andrea Hubli and Tommie Capelli hustled the ball down court to make the plays, while Sara Backus and Joelle Tarczewski did a great job rebounding. Working out those first game jitters, the girls plan to bring a win home for their next game. The girls will be back on the court Dec. 17 against All Saints White.
