This Week’s Highlights… Flag football is branching out . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5 Following a two-month season for approximately 80 kids in a K-8 league – played on the state-of-the-art field inside the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha in September and October – flag football is now being played by middle school kids through Dec. 21. An adult league is also ongoing, and another middle school league and a high school league will start in February.

A variety of local teams in various sports is highlighted in this edition of Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha @Play. Included are a U8 Kenosha Crew team, youth soccer squads such as the U10 Ice Dragons and U11ACE, high school soccer teams from United FC and Kenosha Crew, and Adult Soccer League squads including Valeri Insurance, FTFC and ACE.
Indoor flag footba The new state-of-the-art facility at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha has received plenty of play since its doors opened recently. The indoor surface, which is 65 yards long from baseline to baseline, has brought soccer players out of the woodwork for the adult fall league’s recently completed season.
“We started a league in conjunction with Kenosha Area Athletics,” explained Steve Milkie, who oversees the flag football program. “It was a K-8 league which played on Saturday mornings from September through October and had about 80 kids involved. The fall flag football league played its games on Saturday mornings, as did the Boys & Girls Club’s tackle football league, which plays outdoors. Milkie said the two are not in competition with each other; rather the club now offers another option for the young football enthusiast. “Some parents are either afraid of injury or just don’t feel their kid is ready for tackle football,” reasoned Milkie. “Flag football is a good way to see if you are interested in playing football. And, some people just like flag football better.”
Other leagues in the mix A middle school league is underway and runs on consecutive Wednesdays through Dec. 21. This league is more of a pick-up league in nature. A total of 18 kids are signed up and show up to play for an hour each week. Sides are chosen and they have at it. Another middle school league, along with a high school league, is planned for the winter, starting in February. An adult league is in the mix, starting play on Nov. 5. They will play 10 consecutive Saturdays and have six teams of 14 players each. Milkie has had conversations with area high school football coaches. There are some hurdles to jump over with the WIAA, but once all that is worked out, high school athletes will have a viable football option in their off-season.

Thanks to Milkie’s innovation, the walls and the netting are in play, as is the ceiling on punts, much like an arena league. There are no kickoffs, and teams start their possession just outside their own end zone. If the offensive team reaches midfield, they earn a first down.

U17 Kenosha Crew scores big win in indoor opener The U17 Kenosha Crew girls team began indoor action playing the Eagles in high school girls action at the indoor facility at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha Nov. 13. The Crew won the game in convincing fashion by a 9-1 margin. In other high school girls action, the United FC Red team scored with 16 seconds remaining to secure a 4-4 tie with U16 Kenosha Crew.
