This Week’s Highlights… Skilled players return for Eagles . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5 A number of talented players return to the boys varsity basketball team for the 2011-12 season. They include guards Jon Metz and San Brekke, and forwards Matt Pitt and Dan Rozema. The Eagles are moving into the highly competitive South Division of the Midwest Classic Conference this season.

A significant number of Christian Life students are competing in basketball and wrestling this school year. This week’s edition of Christian Life School @Play lists varsity wrestlers; varsity and JV girls basketball players; and varsity and JV boys basketball players.

“We have the most depth in the 15 years I’ve been coaching,” stated Powell. “We would like to keep our starters in as much as possible, but we can go 10 deep to give them a break and we’ll rotate as needed.” Powell told the parents of the players at a recent meeting that, although the competition will be tough, the team will be fun to watch. “People will get their money’s worth,” he said.

Four talented players return, who collectively will look to pick up the slack left by Charles Crawford, lost through graduation. Crawford averaged a teamhigh 15.8 points per game last season. The returning quartet consists of Jon Metz, a 6-foot-2 senior guard; Dan Rozema, a 6-foot-4 senior forward; Matt Pitt, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward; and Sam Brekke, a 6-foot-1 senior guard. Pitt is the leading returning scorer, averaging 9.7 points per game last year. Brekke added 8.2 points

Look for the Eagles to take advantage of their team speed and get up and down the court quickly, attempting to steal a few transition buckets. Powell, who doubles as the school’s athletic director, said he plans to press the opposition most of the game.

The key to the Eagles’ success will be to connect on a high percentage of their shots. “Matt Pitt is a key player for us,” noted Powell. “He can score inside and out, and is hard to stop. You try to block his shot from the perimeter and he goes right around you.

“Rozema can play any position on the floor. As teams try to stop him at 6-4, that will open it up for Matt’s shots.”

The question mark comes inside. The Eagles do not have the type of players who defend or attack the post.

Matt Pitt

CLS looks to play solid team defense. Powell said this is one of the better defensive squads he has had under his watch.

“If we can come out of the season .500, I’d be happy,” said Powell. “We have never played a schedule this tough. This year will either make us step up and improve, or we will have a season of building for the future of the program.” Next season, nine schools are dropping out of the huge Midwest Classic Conference, leaving CLS, Lake Country Lutheran, Living
