Lacrosse is gaining a considerable amount of popularity in the Midwest and elsewhere – after enjoying years of success on the East Coast – and the Kenosha Raptors are a big part of the reason. There are now more than 3,600 lacrosse players in Wisconsin, compared to fewer than 500 seven years ago. The Raptors are a cooperative high school team competing in the Milwaukee Area Youth Lacrosse League.

The Top Performers section in this edition of KSN @Play features impressive feats by athletes in seven different sports. Among the highlights are 11-year-old Claire Czerwonka’s first-place finish in a Milwaukee tennis tournament, Kendra Everts’ fourth-place finish at the Kenosha County Cross-Country Meet, Tony Martin’s 100-yard passing effort for the Racine Raptors and Shannon Becker tying UW-Parkside’s all-time goals scored record.

Although immensely popular on the East Coast and other scattered pockets, lacrosse is far from mainstream nationwide. But, that may soon change.
“I don’t know if lacrosse can be the next soccer, but it is growing rapidly around the country,” he said. “The Midwest has been the slowest part of the country to react to the sport, but it appears to be reacting in a positive way now.” Backing Wikstrom’s comments is the fact Wisconsin Lacrosse was recently awarded a grant from U.S. Lacrosse. The reasoning behind the financial award is due to the fact that the governing body feels lacrosse in our state is about to explode. The Raptors have applied for some of that grant money to purchase equipment. Lacrosse is not an elitist or expensive sport to play, and many parents find that attractive. On the

ptors creating awareness for the sport in southeastern Wisconsin youth and adult level, clubs and leagues have popped up in the Milwaukee area and in northeast Illinois. “For kids in Kenosha, our club gives them another option,” reasoned Wikstrom. “When you get to high school and you decide you want to try out for the baseball team, if you haven’t played since you were a little kid, you can pretty much forget about making the team. The kids pick up lacrosse so fast. If you’re an athlete, playing sports like hockey, soccer, football or basketball, they transition well into lacrosse.” The game, which is sometimes called “the fastest game on two feet,” could be the easiest way to garner a collegiate athletic scholarship. More and more colleges are starting lacrosse programs. In this area, both Marquette University and Beloit College will field lacrosse pro-
grams next year. A large percentage of colleges also have lacrosse clubs available, so high school students have many options when it comes to playing at the collegiate level.
