Among the annual events are the Wisconsin regional National Wild Turkey Federation calling contest. The organization has affiliations with the Wisconsin Field Archery Association and the Wisconsin Bow Hunters Association.

Peak performances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18-20 The cream always rises to the top. The Top Performers section in the current edition of KSN @Play includes Justin Waller’s six-goal effort for United FC U8 Black, Andrew Alia’s title in the Hot Shot Competition of the RYS Gus Macker basketball tourney, Luke Shine’s catch of a 40-inch tiger muskie, Keith Dorey’s first-ever eagle at Maplecrest Country Club and Austin Hernandez’s four sacks for the CYC Steelers.
Kenosha Bowmen entren with a 24-lane indoor range. “It is a large facility compared to others,” noted Picard. “When people come out, they see it is a pretty nice place.”
The Kenosha Bowmen are not only responsible hunters and target shooting aficionados, they are a group which shoots a bulls-eye right through a stereotype that some who are unaware of their doings may have.
The 120 or so members help keep it nice. Members are required to put in at least 20 hours per year working on the spacious facility. Everybody, young and old, pitches in and few consider it “work.” Picard said when people help with the upkeep, it gives members a sense of ownership and pride.
Emphasis on archery The Kenosha Bowmen organiza“We are not a bunch of hick hunter guys drinking beer,” said Jeff tion was founded to foster, expand Picard, promotions director for the and perpetuate the practice of field archery and the spirit of good group. “We are individuals lookfellowship among all archers. It ening to educate the community and courages the use of bow and arrow are willing to help anyone who is interested in archery. We have hunters and recreational shooters of all different age groups. We see a lot of families out here.” The Kenosha Bowmen club was formed on July 3, 1949, by Dick Brennan, Roger Brennan, Lenny Vaccarlella and Ed Pobar, the latter of whom was the group’s first president. The club moved to several different locations in those early years, finally settling on its current property in 1969 on Highway 50 in Bristol, about two miles west of I94. The venue has 40 wooded acres which encompass four outdoor ranges, three broad head ranges, two outdoor practice ranges, an equipment building and a clubhouse

The group cooperates with Wisconsin Conservation agencies for the propagation and conservation of all game. Potential members fill out an application and are required to attend a meeting to be voted into membership. They then are assessed a one-time initiation fee, along with the annual dues. Once a member, the archer has access to the gated facility, as do members of their immediate family. In addition to drawing back the bow with family and friends, members have an opportunity to par-

nched in community since 1949 ticipate in various leagues, which take place on different ranges each week. The fall league, which started in July, is currently wrapping up. The winter league will take place in January and February – both indoor and outdoor – and the spring league runs from April through June. The leagues are open to nonmembers as well for a nominal fee. The majority of the revenue for the Kenosha Bowmen comes from summer shoots, as they offer numerous types of 3D opportunities. These shoots also bring in members of other archery clubs in a reciprocal act. Certified trainers put on family archery classes for those looking to hone their skills or who are merely interested in getting started. The Kenosha Bowmen have opened their doors to the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and 4-H clubs to educate the youth of the community and to give them another positive pastime
option, which could be carried on into adulthood. If a potential archer does not have the equipment, the Bowmen will provide it.
Shoots benefit the needy “We try to serve the community in many ways,” explained Picard. “We have an annual benefit shoot which started three years ago. The last one was in August and the proceeds go to someone in need. We have generated over $60,000 in three years. There’s a lot of work involved in putting on those events, but it’s a lot of fun, too.”
have never picked up a bow to come out and try it. “Everyone is always welcome, even if you just want to come out and look around,” he said. “Our members are friendly and will be happy to answer any questions and help you, should you decide you want to try it out.”
The Bowmen also host the Wisconsin regional National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) calling contest each year. Winners advance to the national contest. Also, the Bowmen put on youth archery training at the Bass Pro Shop several times during hunting promotional times. Picard encourages those who
