Of note: The Rangers saw their 23-game home winning streak snapped on a last-second shot Dec. 1 before recovering quickly with a big win over Southern Indiana Dec. 3. The win over Southern Indiana marked the largest margin in school history against the Screaming Eagles. Statistically speaking, the Rangers had a significant week. Brittany Beyer (17.5 ppg last week) and Jadee Rooney (16.5 ppg) moved up on the school’s all-time scoring list and appear destined to finish second and third when it’s all said and done. Beyer is now at 1,343 points, third in Ranger history. She is 20 shy of Carrie Weir (2001-05), who sits in second place at 1,322. Men’s Basketball (4-3, 0-2 GLVC) Last week: Defeated by #9 Kentucky Wesleyan, 8178 (OT); defeated by #5 Southern Indiana, 71-69. Of note: The UW-Parkside men’s basketball team proved it could play with the nation’s best this past week after its two games against top 10 programs went down to the wire. Unfortunately for the Rangers, each opponent hit a late three-pointer in regulation which eventually led to heartbreaking defeat. The Rangers hope to get continued production out of their post players who put together a good weekend against Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana. Freshman Ziggy Riauka averaged 12 points and four rebounds in the two games, while Steve Jaskulske added 8.5 points and 3.5 boards to help solidify that center spot. Conrad Krutwig and Kevin Senechalle also manned the power forward position nicely. Krutwig averaged 8.5 points and six rebounds for the weekend, while Senechalle gave the Rangers 5.5 boards a contest.
This week in Ranger sports perfect on the season after four events. Davien Willis and Arik Yde each reached the championship round before falling in the finals. Willis lost a hard-fought title match, 6-5. Yde dropped a decision to Kyle Windquist from Luther College. Heavyweight James Malechek finished third thanks to a 7-2 victory over Anthony Edgren, who wrestled unattached. Malechek was 4-1 on the day including three pins. Montrail Johnson earned a fourth-place spot by going 3-2 at 165. He dropped a pair of close decisions in the semifinal (6-5) and third-place match (4-2). His three wins included two by pin and one by major decision.

UWP women rebound in big win over USI After suffering a 68-67 loss at the buzzer to Kentucky Wesleyan College, snapping a near two-year-long home winning streak Dec. 1, the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team took out its frustration on Southern Indiana, beating the Screaming Eagles, 76-50, Dec. 3. The 15th-ranked Rangers led 33-11 early and were never threatened. Parkside forced 14 first-half turnovers, converting them into 21 points. There was no letdown in the second half, as the Rangers scored the first 13 points and pushed their lead to 57-19. The Rangers shot 50 percent from the field in the game, including 5-of-10 from behind the arc.

UWP edged by nationally-ranked teams The UW-Parkside men’s basketball team could argue that it was two possessions away from being nationally ranked. The Rangers dropped a heartbreaking 81-78 game, in overtime, to the ninth-ranked team in the country, Kentucky Wesleyan, Dec. 1. Then, on Dec. 3, UW-Parkside came up just short again, this time to Southern Indiana, ranked No. 5 in the nation, 71-69. Kentucky Wesleyan forced overtime on a tightly defended, desperation three-point shot on the Panthers’ last possession. Against the Screaming Eagles, the Rangers had a chance to tie or win the game on their final possession, but USI came up with a steal as time expired.

Freshman Ziggy Riauka led the Rangers in scoring with 15 points against Kentucky Wesleyan Dec. 1. He also pulled down six rebounds, blocked a shot and dished out an assist. Jordan Mach paced Parkside in scoring with 17 points against Southern Indiana Dec. 3.
