This Week’s Highlights… Men’s basketball team eyes improvement . . . . . . 4-5 With considerably more depth than it has possessed in recent years, the men’s basketball team is looking to show improvement in the recently launched 2011-12 season. Ninth-year head coach Luke Reigel, whose team began its regular season Nov. 12 with an impressive 125-70 victory over Indiana University-Northwest, said the Rangers will be fun to watch.

Included in the Top Performers section of this week’s edition of UW-Parkside @Play are Brittany Beyer’s career-high 37 points against the University of Tampa, Ziggy Riauka’s 18 points versus Indiana University-Northwest and Luke Rynish’s title in the 174-pound division at Iowa State.

Depth – or the lack of it – can make a significant difference in the fortunes of a basketball team. With solid depth, players can go all out on every play, knowing that when they need to sit on the bench to catch their wind, a replacement will capably fill the void. Coaches enjoy having depth on their teams because when a starter goes down to injury, he can usually be replaced without too much of a letdown.

The Rangers opened their brief exhibition season with an 87-77 loss at Division I Bradley Nov. 1, then dropped a 67-59 decision at Division I UWMilwaukee. #16 Women’s Basketball Last week: Defeated the University of Tampa, 72-57; defeated by Rollins College at Tampa, 66-58. With fall sports wrapping up, the full transition into the winter season is coming. Last up for the fall is cross-country with Hope Christie and Evan Lewandowski heading to the NCAA Championships Nov. 19. Both basketball teams are at home, including the men hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic presented by Comfort Suites. Wrestling is back on the mats Nov. 20 in Mequon. Take a look at what’s happening this week in UWParkside athletics:

Men’s Basketball Last week: Defeated Indiana University Northwest, 125-70. This week: Nov. 18 vs. Saginaw Valley, 7 p.m.; Nov. 19 vs. Northwood, 7 p.m.

This week: Nov. 19 vs. Saginaw Valley, 1 p.m. Of note: The women’s basketball team started its season off with two nationally mentioned opponents in the Spartan Classic at the University of Tampa. The Rangers knocked off the hosts, 72-57 Nov. 11 before falling to a tough Rollins College squad on Nov. 12, 66-58. Against Tampa, senior Brittany Beyer had a night to remember, scoring 37 points, the second-most in school history. She was 15-of-19 from the floor along with grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists. She helped the Rangers build on a one-point halftime lead and win going away. Against Rollins, the Rangers were faced with early foul trouble and had to play catch-up throughout the game before finally running out of time. Amy Selk led

Of note: The Ranger men’s basketball team got off to an impressive start by scoring the second-most points in school history in a 125-70 pasting of Indiana University Northwest. Parkside knocked down 15 threepointers and shot an eye-catching 60 percent from the field. Freshman Ziggy Riauka led a group of five players in double figures with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Rangers had 32 assists on their 49 field goals and committed just four turnovers. Parkside is back at the DeSimone Gymnasium hosting the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Nov. 18-19. The Rangers will welcome regional foes MinnesotaDuluth, Saginaw Valley State and Northwood University for what promises to be two great days of basketball. Duluth and Northwood will kick things off Nov. 18 at 5 p.m. with the Rangers and Saginaw Valley to follow at 7 p.m. The Nov. 19 times remain the same with Duluth and Saginaw Valley playing the first game and the Rangers and Northwood immediately after. This week in Ranger sports Parkside with 20 points and nine rebounds. Beyer and fellow senior Jadee Rooney tried to lead a late comeback, scoring the team’s final 24 points. The team will be back at the DeSimone Gymnasium on Nov. 19, for their home opener against Saginaw Valley State. The Rangers have won 19 straight games at home and 34 of their last 35. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

Wrestling This week: Had one champion and three other place finishers at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open hosted by Iowa State. This week: Nov. 19 at the Concordia Open hosted by Concordia University, Mequon, Wis., 9 a.m. Of note: Luke Rynish showed again why he’s one of the nation’s top wrestlers at 174 pounds as he dominated the field at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open hosted by Iowa State University. Rynish was one of four Rangers to place at the tournament. Collin Crume took third at 133 while Davien Willis (197) and James Malechek (285) each finished fourth. Rynish cruised to the 174 title with his only points against coming on escapes he allowed. He is now 8-0 on the young season. Crume was impressive at 133 with a pair of victories over Iowa State grapplers. He reached the semifinals before taking a loss, but rebounded with two more wins to claim third. Willis and Malechek combined for seven pins on the day, going 5-2 and 6-2, respectively, to place fourth in the two highest weight classes. The team will hit the mats again when they head to the Concordia Open on Nov. 19, in Mequon, Wis. The first matches will start at 9 a.m.

Evan Lewandowski

look to earn All-American honors as coach Micah VanDenend believes they will both be in position to push for a spot in the top 40 on Nov. 19. Christie was eighth at the regional meet on Nov. 5 at Ferris State and will be running at the national meet for the first time. She has dealt with an injured foot during the past month but appears to be getting stronger in time for this weekend.

This week: NCAA Championships in Spokane, Wash., Nov. 19.

Lewandowski, who finished sixth at regionals, is also making his first appearance at nationals. He is only the second male runner from UW-Parkside to run for All-American status, joining Ben Orvold, who qualified last year.

Of note: The Rangers will be represented in both races at the NCAA Championships at the Plantes Ferry Athletic Complex in Spokane, Wash. Hope Christie for the women and Evan Lewandowski for the men will

Rangers split on Florida trip Playing against two teams which picked up votes in the pre-season national poll, the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team, ranked No. 16 in the country, split their season-opening contests. The Rangers beat the University of Tampa on its home floor Nov. 11, 72-57, but then fell to Rollins College, 66-58, the following day, also at the University of Tampa. Brittany Beyer scored 37 points against Tampa, which was the second highest output by any Ranger women’s basketball player in history. Debbie Hanson’s 39 points against Chicago State in 1985 was nearly eclipsed. The Rangers will bring their 1-1 record into their home opener Saturday, Nov. 19, against Saginaw Valley State, at 1 p.m. The Cardinals are 0-1 after losing at Southern Indiana, 76-62.

UWP wins first-round match, then bows to two-time national champ The UW-Parkside women’s soccer squad won a thrilling 2-1 overtime game over Quincy in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament Nov. 11. The team then advanced to play the two-time defending national champion Grand Valley State Lakers Nov. 13 and dropped a 3-1 decision, ending their season with a 13-4-2 overall record. Both matches were played on Grand Valley State’s campus in Allendale, Mich. The loss ends the collegiate careers of four highly decorated seniors. Shannon Becker, Kristen Benson, Natalie Brown and Cassie Glodowski finish their tenure with two GLVC championships, three trips to the NCAA Tournament (including at least one win each year) and a superb record of 58-12-9.

Goalkeeper Cassie Glodowski backstopped the Rangers into the NCAA tournament.

Volleyball season ends at conference tournament The Ranger volleyball team made its first appearance at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament since 2003. The team was eliminated by Drury, 21-25, 25-14, 25-27, 23-25 in Indianapolis. The match, played on the campus of the University of Indianapolis, began at 7 a.m. CST Nov. 11. The injury-riddled Rangers ended their season with a 15-16 overall record. The team was 11-7 in league play, marking the first time the Rangers have won 11 league games since 1997. “I’m very proud of what we achieved this season,” said head coach Christine Paciero. “We had great performances by our seniors. They should all be very proud of what we accomplished this year. We fought hard for each and every point. It just didn’t go our way.”

Rangers drop 125 on RedHawks in season opener The UW-Parkside men’s basketball team exploded for 125 points in their season opener against visiting Indiana Northwest in the DeSimone Gymnasium Nov. 12. The Rangers coasted to a 125-70 victory with 13 players getting into the scoring column. Five players finished in double figures. This is the most points Parkside has scored since it defeated Ferris State, 127-122, in double overtime in 1987. “After we settled in a little bit on the defensive end we kind of took off,” said head coach Luke Reigel. “We have a lot of guys that can put the ball in the basket. I was really happy we had a lot of guys contribute today.” The Rangers knocked down 15 three-point shots in the game. The victors got 76 points off their bench.

Rynish dominates at Iowa State Luke Rynish showed again why he’s one of the nation’s top wrestlers at 174 pounds as he dominated the field at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open hosted by Iowa State University Nov. 13. Rynish was one of four Rangers to place at the tournament. Collin Crume took third at 133, while Davien Willis (197) and James Malechek (285) each finished fourth. “We’re very happy with the results,” said head coach Gregg Lewis. “It was a real strong performance from the guys. These guys are scrappers. The whole team performed really well.”
