This Week’s Highlights… Men’s basketball team eyes improvement . . . . . . 4-5 With considerably more depth than it has possessed in recent years, the men’s basketball team is looking to show improvement in the recently launched 2011-12 season. Ninth-year head coach Luke Reigel, whose team began its regular season Nov. 12 with an impressive 125-70 victory over Indiana University-Northwest, said the Rangers will be fun to watch.

A look at the week ahead . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 11-16 A number of UW-Parkside teams will be in action this week, including the men’s and women’s basketball teams, and the men’s wrestling squad, along with Evan Lewandowski and Hope Christie at the NCAA Cross Country Nationals.

Peak performances . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18-19 Several individuals stood tall in recent performances for the Rangers. Included in the Top Performers section of this week’s edition of UW-Parkside @Play are Brittany Beyer’s career-high 37 points against the University of Tampa, Ziggy Riauka’s 18 points versus Indiana University-Northwest and Luke Rynish’s title in the 174-pound division at Iowa State.

Depth – or the lack of it – can make a significant difference in the fortunes of a basketball team. With solid depth, players can go all out on every play, knowing that when they need to sit on the bench to catch their wind, a replacement will capably fill the void. Coaches enjoy having depth on their teams because when a starter goes down to injury, he can usually be replaced without too much of a letdown.

point field goals made per game (3.0), ninth in steals (1.52), ninth in minutes played (31.8) and 13th in scoring (14.0). “We expect big things out of Jeremy this year,” Reigel said. “Both Leneal and Jordan had some growing pains in their first year in the program last season, but Leneal will be a more complete player this year and Jordan will build on things he did last year and he’ll add things to his game.”

The Parkside frontcourt will consist of 6-7 junior forwards Kevin Senechalle, “We have so much more depth who missed this season,” said ninth-year head the exhibition coach Luke Reigel. “The bottom line opener due to is we have more good players than illness, and we’ve had recently. We haven’t been Steve Jaskulske, very deep the last few years, but this whose 2010-11 depth will make us better on both season ended ends of the court.” with an injury Among those good players is after just seven Jeremy Saffold. He’s been through it.” Other key contributors will be 6-3 senior guard Sam Katula, 6-2 junior guard Nick Neari and 6-8 freshman forward Ziggy Riauka. Last season, Katula scored in double figures eight times, Neari played in all 27 games and was runner-up on the team in steals (25) and assists (55), and Riauka averaged 11.7 points and

“One thing we can take out of both exhibition games is that we know we have a lot to build on,” Reigel said. “This is a group that wants to get better. With our depth this season, we don’t have to rely on the same players every night offensively, and on defense we don’t have to play players when they’re tired. We haven’t had that kind of luxury in recent years.

The Rangers began the 2011-12 regular season with a 125-70 rout of Indiana University-Northwest Nov. 12. Riauka led the way with 18 points, followed by Colt Grandstaff with 16, Jarvis Lawson with 15, Jaskulske with 14 and Krutwig with 12. The Rangers opened their brief exhibition season with an 87-77 loss at Division I Bradley Nov. 1, then dropped a 67-59 decision at Division I UWMilwaukee. Saffold scored 19 points against Bradley, while Mach added a dozen. Versus Milwaukee, Harris tossed in 14 points, while Krutwig and Saffold had 12 each. Steve Jaskulske

“There’s a different feel to this group. Offensively we’re going to go. We’ll get out in transition and run. We’ll be fun to watch. We have a bunch of guys who love to compete. Teams will have their hands full if they’re not prepared to play. We’re going to grow and get better as the season goes along.”

This week: Nov. 19 vs. Saginaw Valley, 1 p.m. Of note: The women’s basketball team started its season off with two nationally mentioned opponents in the Spartan Classic at the University of Tampa. The Rangers knocked off the hosts, 72-57 Nov. 11 before falling to a tough Rollins College squad on Nov. 12, 66-58. Against Tampa, senior Brittany Beyer had a night to remember, scoring 37 points, the second-most in school history. She was 15-of-19 from the floor along with grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out four assists. She helped the Rangers build on a one-point halftime lead and win going away. Against Rollins, the Rangers were faced with early foul trouble and had to play catch-up throughout the game before finally running out of time. Amy Selk led

Of note: The Ranger men’s basketball team got off to an impressive start by scoring the second-most points in school history in a 125-70 pasting of Indiana University Northwest. Rangers split on Florida trip Playing against two teams which picked up votes in the pre-season national poll, the UW-Parkside women’s basketball team, ranked No. 16 in the country, split their season-opening contests. The Rangers beat the University of Tampa on its home floor Nov. 11, 72-57, but then fell to Rollins College, 66-58, the following day, also at the University of Tampa. Brittany Beyer scored 37 points against Tampa, which was the second highest output by any Ranger women’s basketball player in history. Debbie Hanson’s 39 points against Chicago State in 1985 was nearly eclipsed. The Rangers will bring their 1-1 record into their home opener Saturday, Nov. 19, against Saginaw Valley State, at 1 p.m. The Cardinals are 0-1 after losing at Southern Indiana, 76-62.

Volleyball season ends at conference tournament The Ranger volleyball team made its first appearance at the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament since 2003. The team was eliminated by Drury, 21-25, 25-14, 25-27, 23-25 in Indianapolis. The match, played on the campus of the University of Indianapolis, began at 7 a.m. CST Nov. 11. The injury-riddled Rangers ended their season with a 15-16 overall record. The team was 11-7 in league play, marking the first time the Rangers have won 11 league games since 1997. “I’m very proud of what we achieved this season,” said head coach Christine Paciero. “We had great performances by our seniors. They should all be very proud of what we accomplished this year. We fought hard for each and every point. It just didn’t go our way.”

Senior Addie Kramer closed her career out at the GLVC tournament.

Rangers drop 125 on RedHawks in season opener The UW-Parkside men’s basketball team exploded for 125 points in their season opener against visiting Indiana Northwest in the DeSimone Gymnasium Nov. 12. The Rangers coasted to a 125-70 victory with 13 players getting into the scoring column. Five players finished in double figures. This is the most points Parkside has scored since it defeated Ferris State, 127-122, in double overtime in 1987. “After we settled in a little bit on the defensive end we kind of took off,” said head coach Luke Reigel. “We have a lot of guys that can put the ball in the basket. I was really happy we had a lot of guys contribute today.” The Rangers knocked down 15 three-point shots in the game. The victors got 76 points off their bench.
