From the Office

We are in the middle of a beautiful summer and nothing beats lake life! Sunshine, being on and in the water, and all of the fun gatherings that center around the lakes in our area make this a perfect place to call our home, even if you are a seasonal visitor. Nothing beats Minnesota in the warmer months. (Let's forget our frigid winters for right now...).

Personally, I love to entertain. Events are a fabulous way to gather friends and family together and hosting or helping with parties at the lake takes the fun to a new level. Nature gives us the perfect backdrop for picnics, parties, reunions, and special time with loved ones. The lake, trees, lush green landscape, and warm temperatures all culminate into a serene and soothing atmosphere, ideal for those times when you want to create special moments. This issue,

we bring you tips for lakeside entertaining, complete with recommendations for goods from local retailers. Additionally, you’ll find a few fun food and drink recipes designed for the summertime. Refreshments are in order during hot, sunny days and here, you’ll find “mocktail” recipes (easily converted to cocktails if you desire).

Also, don’t miss our feature homes. They are showstoppers and offer different styles and aesthetics. Lake homes run the gamut in this region and the luxury/custom market continues to surprise us with new products, designs, and options, both exterior and interior. Landscaping is the cherry on top! You can glean great ideas for your own property by paying close attention to the landscapes

surrounding our feature homes and also by checking out our story on pergolas.

We look forward to this issue, as it celebrates what we believe is the best time of the Minnesota year. Take full advantage of every summer day and have fun entertaining and enjoying the best of lakes country! L&H

A peaceful lakefront property with shimmering waves holds endless opportunities for aquatic adventures, whether you love boating or jet skiing, fishing on the weekends, or simply if you revel the serenity of being by the water at your lake cabin. This summer you can give your lakefront property a glow up by updating your dock, investing in a dock hammock, or adding a hillside tram. These additions will elevate your waterfront living experience, transforming it into your own personal paradise.

Looking to Upgrade Your Dock?

Do you currently have an outdated dock and you’re looking for a new one? Or maybe you are in search of your first dock. This journey is exciting. It opens up new possibilities for enhancing your lake property so that you’ll be able to enjoy all the recreational activities you love. Before consulting a dock specialist, it’s essential to consider a few key points that’ll help you make an informed decision.

JULY / AUGUST 2023 www.lakeandhomemagazine.com 17

Some things you’ll want to think about are what your specific needs and preferences are. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the different kinds of docks that are out there. For example, do you want a floating dock option? Or would you rather have a sturdy fixed dock? Are you going to mainly use it for your boats or jet skis, or are you wanting a multifunctional dock you can fish off of or use as another relaxation area with your family?

Lake Area Docks & Lifts is owned by Donavan and Renae Rasmusson. They’ve been serving customers since 1995 and offer a wide selection of docks options. They have ShoreMaster Docks which come in traditional woodgrain, gray woodgrain, Glacier™ Flow-Through in tan or gray, Vertex™ (which has a flagstone appearance) in tan or gray, painted aluminum in tan or white, plain aluminum, or even cedar.

You can see the ShoreMaster RS4 with gray wood grain, in the picture of the dock with the blue canopy. “The exclusive 45 degree sections gives the customer the most custom use of their lake front. With 3 - 90 degree sections, she was able to create the perfect place to gather and relax.” said Jim Gjere Lake Area Docks & Lifts service manager.

Tackling Too Many Stairs? Here’s The Solution!

If you have a lake cabin with multiple steps leading down to the shore, you might want to look into getting a hillside tram system from Marine Innovations. These “hillevators” will change your experience with lake life. No more getting tired from long journeys up and down the stairs before the fun has even begun. These trams also cater to those with mobility challenges, disabilities, or even busy families with young children. They are safe to ride on comfortably for all ages.

You’ll be able to load up all the things you need for your day in the sun (fishing gear, snacks, or even toys) onto your tram and then you’ll board it with your family and set out for fun at the lake. Instead of making multiple tiring trips up and down the stairs. This will also make the trip down to the shore easier if you have kids with you.

The tram is made with powder-coated aluminum which means it’s durable and will look great for years to come. The tracks and also the pin piles are made from galvanized steel which makes them stable and strong.

The type of cable used on the traction drive hill lift is commercial grade. It’s the same kind used in the aircraft industry. Through the years, they have been building outdoor hill trams; to date, Marine Innovations has not had a cable break or experienced any failure of equipment.

Like anything, you can also customize your hillevator with lighting, canopies, and even security options too (such as key fobs and passcodes). Hillside elevators are designed and constructed following strict standards, followed by Marine Innovations' certified installers visiting property to properly install the tram.

When you invest in your property by building something like this, it’s always great to know that the company stands behind their product with warranties. For all of the residential hill elevators’ electrical components, Marine Innovations offers a comprehensive one-year warranty, on structure they offer 15 years, and for the motor, gearbox, and brakes they offer three years.

If you ever think about selling your lake cabin in the future, having one of these will definitely add value to your lake home, making it a sought-after commodity.

Ever Considered a Dock Hammock?

Imagine the relaxation and peace of being suspended above the water in the soft embrace of a premium hammock while reading a book as the kids swim or fish. Installing a dock hammock provides a tranquil retreat where you can unwind, escape the rat race, and indulge in precious moments with family at the lake.

Every hammock from Muskoka Hammocks is handcrafted with the finest materials to withstand the elements. They have a collection of hammocks that you can choose from whether you want a more classic one or even one with a fun, modern twist. “Muskoka Hammocks, is a new and innovative company that is now entering its second season. We are dedicated to delivering exceptional quality and creating memorable outdoor experiences for our customers,” said Thomas Pittman, CEO of Muskoka Hammocks.

They are based in Muskoka, Ontario, Canada and ship hammocks and hardware to the United States. When the hammocks arrive, you can easily install them yourself or have a local contractor build the frame for it. “We do custom orders to fit whatever the customer's needs are.” Pittman said.

“I absolutely love assisting my clients, especially when I receive pictures of their loved ones and friends enjoying our hammocks. It brings me immense joy to see the happiness they bring,” said Pittman.

Updating your dock, getting a hillside tram installed, or even adding a luxurious dock hammock will greatly enhance your lake experience by providing many benefits. It’ll be your own serene escape where you can unwind. Adding any of these to your lake property will allow you to more conveniently immerse yourself in your surroundings of peace and comfort. Whether you’re seeking adventure, some much needed rest, or some quality time with your family, these elements will transform your lakeside experience into an unforgettable retreat. L&H

Since summer is finally here, it’s the perfect time to turn your outdoor spaces into luxurious oases where you can relax in style while listening to frogs and crickets singing in the night.

There are certain things you’ll want to make sure you take into consideration when planning to buy high-end outdoor furniture to elevate your patio, deck, or even your three-season porch.

High-end patio furniture elevates your experience outside in more than one way. It looks great, but if you’ve done your research, it should also last you awhile. It’ll also add to your peaceful aesthetic, whether you're alone on the porch reading a book or hosting a small gathering of family and friends.

Let’s go over some of the different points you’ll want to keep in mind when on the hunt for the perfect furniture pieces to add to your outdoor space, as well as some styling tips to transform your porch into a haven of relaxation and peace this summer.

JULY / AUGUST 2023 www.lakeandhomemagazine.com 27

1. Cushion Craze

Comfort is one of the first things you’ll want to look at when it comes to buying new furniture. You’ll want to be cozy when unwinding in the sun by the pool or snuggling under a light blanket on your deck in the evening. There’s nothing better than sinking into a soft cushioned seat for a long cat nap in the sun.

And then there’s nothing worse than buying new furniture, to find out later how unbearable sitting on it feels. It’s a good idea to check out the comfort level of the furniture you purchase for your outdoor spaces before making a purchase. Go to different places and try out the furniture and also ask the staff questions about the pieces, including the return policy.

You’ll also want to pay close attention to the upholstery fabric. Is it buttery soft or is it scratchy? Look for something you love.

Homecrest Elements seating is a wonderful option for comfortable, quality, and long-lasting outdoor furniture. Plus, they are an Americanmade brand, available to order locally through SCHEELS Home & Hardware.

2. Withstanding the Elements

As all Midwesterners know, we have extreme weather and because of that, our outdoor furniture can take a beating with intense freeze-thaw cycles. This is one area that can easily be overlooked when searching for great furniture that’ll stand the test of time in the elements.

Since certain materials do better in different areas, you’ll want to look for materials like: aluminum, resin wicker, composite woods, and even some teakwood (but you’ll want to check before buying from a dealer to make sure it can endure the intense winters without warping, splintering, or damaging in the sun. It’s good to ask about non-wood furniture and whether it rusts or corrodes.) Also, if the furniture has cushions, you’ll want to make sure it has waterproof or water resistant features in the fabric. If not, you can always take the cushions off in the fall, but when you ensure it is safe to be out all year long, that will make your life much easier, as this means no more hauling awkwardsized cushions into storage.

Other than our intense winters, there's something else we always have to deal with no matter the season–it’s the wind. “With our winds, I always check the weight of chairs so that you don’t have issues with the wind blowing it away,” said Trever Hill, Principal Designer and owner of Curated Home by Trever Hill.

Ashley Furniture Industries has an attractive, durable swivel lounge chair called the Danson, which is handwoven with a resin wicker over an aluminum frame. This construction means it should have exceptional durability against the elements.

3. Make your life easier with less work

Of course, you could always move your furniture inside or into storage for the winter, but this is tiring, and it’s a lot of extra work. So if you can find pieces that make less work for you, it will be so much better. Since we all have to-do lists that are a mile long, finding furniture that requires minimal to no maintenance will be a welcome time saver.

Plus, they'll stay brilliant all year long and you won’t have to even think about cleaning, staining, or repairing them. Instead, you’ll be able to spend more time doing things you enjoy with those you love and enjoying your home without all the added work. “You really have to make sure the furniture is functional for that space. You can’t just run out and grab anything. Otherwise, you’re just setting yourself up for heartache or replacements,” said Trever Hill.

If you are concerned about choosing the right furniture and want a professional to walk along with you in choosing the right pieces that fit your lifestyle but will also last a long time, think about working with a designer.

On top of choosing the right furniture that fits your lifestyle, you’ll also want to add some final touches to your space.

Essential tips for making your outdoor space feel like a peaceful paradise

If you are planning to build a new patio, it’s good to keep the sun to shade ratio in mind. Do you want your patio in the full sun? Or want some in the shade and some in the full sun? It’s sometimes nice to have shaded and sunny areas on your patio.

If you already have a patio and there’s a lot of sun and you need some shaded areas, umbrellas, canopies, and pergolas are great options. Berlin Gardens has many you can choose from and you can get these through SCHEELS Home & Hardware. You can add an umbrella to your picnic table or even add a freestanding one or two to your patio or deck. This also helps frame in your space. Just make sure you research umbrella options that are stable and won’t be pushed around by the wind. When you find the right one, it will definitely bring you refuge from the sun in the summer.

Another thing to include on your patio is a firepit, like the one from Berlin Gardens. There’s nothing like relaxing by a firepit in the evenings or roasting marshmallows over stories with family and friends. You can also find an assortment of stylish fire pits from Ashley Furniture Industries like the Beachcroft Firepit which was inspired by a driftwood look. With its all-weather resin wicker which was handwoven over the top of aluminum that has been powder coated and is rust-proof, this would make a long-lasting addition to your patio.

You might also want to add some texture to your space by picking out some planters with plants, getting some throw pillows for the seats, and rugs that add to the aesthetic you’d like.

Missy Palczewski from Burlap Rustic Chic Boutique said, “If I had to pick one thing that I can’t live without, it would be Turkish towels! Not only do they come in any beautiful style and color, but their elegance is accompanied by a buttery soft feeling that adds a coziness that is hard to beat while still being lightweight and breathable enough to cuddle up with on summer days. No worries if you leave them out overnight and in inclement weather because they are just quick drying towels! You can even use these on your outdoor table as a sophisticated-looking table cloth at mealtime.”

As the summer sun beckons us, now is the time to transform your patio into a luxurious retreat with these styling tips and some new comfortable outdoor furniture that matches not only your style but also your lifestyle. Have a peaceful summer enjoying your outdoor sanctuary.

THE FUNCTION OF PERGOLAS IN THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN

If you’re looking to enhance your outdoor living space, then pergolas are the way to go! These beautiful garden structures not only provide shade but also add elegance and style to any landscape design. With their unique function, pergolas can create inviting outdoor living areas perfect for relaxing or entertaining guests. Here, we’ll explore how pergolas can transform any hardscape area into a focal point of your backyard while adding LED lighting or fire features that will make it even more enjoyable during chilly evenings.

PERGOLAS CREATE UNIQUE SPACES IN THE LANDSCAPE

Pergolas are a great way to create unique spaces in your landscape. Whether you have a large or small backyard, these structures can be customized to fit any space and style. With their open design, pergolas allow for natural light and air flow while still providing shade from the sun’s harsh rays. One of the main benefits of installing a pergola is that it creates an outdoor living area that is separate from the rest of your yard. This provides a designated space for relaxing or entertaining guests without feeling like you’re exposed to the entire neighborhood. With different styles and materials available, there’s no limit to what you can do with your pergola design. You can opt for wood or metal material depending on your preference and budget. Plus, adding climbing plants such as vines or flowers can further enhance its beauty while adding some privacy at the same time. Imagine having a cozy seating area surrounded by lush greenery under the shade of your stunning pergola! If you’re looking for ways to make your backyard more inviting and functional, consider adding a pergola structure.

OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS UTILIZING PERGOLAS

Pergolas are a great addition to any outdoor living space. They provide shade and privacy while adding unique style and design elements to the area. Utilizing pergolas in your outdoor living areas creates an inviting atmosphere for relaxation, entertainment, and dining. One way to incorporate pergolas into your outdoor living space is by creating a patio area with comfortable seating arrangements under the shade of a beautiful pergola. This provides an ideal spot for enjoying morning coffee or evening cocktails with family or friends. Another way to use pergolas is by incorporating them into other hardscape features such as fire pits or water features. A well-designed landscape can create multiple focal points within a backyard that will provide visual interest all year round. LED lighting fixtures installed on the top of the pergola add ambiance to your night-time gatherings while providing safety around walkways and stairs leading up to it. Additionally, you can install an overhead fan inside the structure which helps keep things cool during warm weather days. Incorporating pergolas into your outdoor living spaces adds functionality while enhancing its natural beauty at the same time - making it an excellent investment if you love spending time outdoors.

JULY / AUGUST 2023 www.lakeandhomemagazine.com 41

Hardscapes with pergolas in the design create areas of focal points and enhance your outdoor living experience. By incorporating pergolas into your landscape design, you can create a functional outdoor living space. Whether you are looking to add shade, privacy or simply an area for entertaining guests, pergolas are the perfect addition to any patio or backyard. Hardscapes with pergolas in the design also offer a great opportunity to create areas of focal points within your landscaping. With LED lighting options and fire features available, you can transform your outdoor space into a cozy retreat that is perfect for relaxing after a long day at work or hosting gatherings with family and friends.

If adding shade and ambiance in an easy, affordable fashion are goals you have for your outdoor space, a pergola may be the best option to consider. The durability and functionality of a pergola instantly enhances the space and provides a structure that, if built with excellent construction, should last for several years to come. L&H

Summer is the best time of the year in Minnesota and lake goers far and wide are ready to celebrate the longawaited warmth in a summer daze of sunny rays. Hosting a party any time of the year flows as naturally through the veins of any good Minnesotan as the water flows down the Mighty Mississippi, but throwing a summer party truly

brings out the extra credit of being Minnesota Nice. Two guests or 20, on the patio or on the pontoon, there are plenty of options to make your gathering unforgettable!

“Bright colors are always a great option”, says Michelle Shaw of The Back Porch in Perham, MN. “I love to mix and

LAKE LIFE

match colors when I am decorating my outdoor space with anything fun and bright!”. Viva Magenta is this year’s color of choice and can be incorporated in multitudes of ways, from fresh cut flowers from your garden, to fun napkins and serving items to tablecloths.

When entertaining, you always want to do as much of the prep work ahead of the time as possible, so when your guests arrive, you have time to enjoy their company and aren’t sidetracked with melon balling or trying to win an award winning tablescape. “We sell a lot of our dips and cheesecake mixes in the summer. They are easy to prepare, they also make a great hostess gift, especially the cheesecakes which are to die for!” Fun, easy, and delicious mixes are a great way to make your prep work more efficient and less stressful.

Having a few ready-to-mix dips and sauces on hand works well for those unexpected pop-by guests or impromptu parties. They’re quick and easy to make; most require just a few key ingredients such as mayo and/or sour cream and you’re done. They’re easy to pack in a sealed container to take out on the boat or serve them in fun, summer-themed partyware that’s ceramic or melamine-style plastic.

JULY / AUGUST 2023 www.lakeandhomemagazine.com 49

Prep work also includes thinking ahead when it comes to cleaning up. There are many great disposable and environmentally safe products to use that are fun, bright, and recyclable, leaving clean-up a breeze. Make sure to have plenty of to-go containers on hand for any leftovers  or if you would like to send small bags home with any of your guests. There are multiple great party containers that make bringing your favorite pies, cakes, cupcakes and deviled eggs a breeze and also grab a Wine Buddy. “It keeps your entire bottle of wine or champagne cold for 12+ hours with no need for an ice bucket,” Michelle added.

Having plenty of game options for your guests is a great way to engage your friends and family in laughter and conversation. Old school games such as Badminton, Horseshoes, and Cornhole are no fail, excellent options! ”We like to focus on things that tend to incorporate the lake since it is such a big factor of outdoor fun in our area. We have a great selection of water toys as well as fun outdoor games like our Hide and Seek Firefly game, bubble machines and wands, and flying discs. “On the off chance Mother Nature has alternative plans for the day, Michelle says, “It’s always a good idea to have some party games on hand, which we have a great selection of for all ages, in case you have to move your party indoors!”

Keep in mind, sometimes less is more when decorating for the big day. Be mindful of both the weather that if you plan on playing into the evening, sometimes extra outdoor lighting is needed. Outdoor solar lanterns that can be hung from your pergola, trees, or a garden stake,  luminaries which use water-activated tea lights, and the indoor/outdoor LED Bluetooth speaker and lantern in one make excellent accessories to incorporate into your summer party setup. Along with selling solar lanterns, Michelle sells several outdoor rugs, including highly-efficient ones. “Because they are made from recycled plastic, they don’t absorb water and are fade-resistant which makes them great for decks and RV areas.”

What is a great gathering without music? Take the time a week or so in advance to start working on a playlist  you can play in the background. Many streaming services offer the option to share your list and have a collection of people add to it to create something that everyone will enjoy. It is a good way to get the party started before the party starts! Whether your party stays on land or heads out onto the lake, be sure to have a portable Bluetooth speaker that can play your “mixed tape” wherever you are.

Day tripping on the pontoon lends itself to a host of fun party accessories. Michelle commented, “We love our silicone drink lids which work on pretty much any beverage or cup to keep the bugs out ,along with our freezable wine glasses, beer mugs, and tumblers for your drinks. You simply store them in the freezer until you are ready to use and you have a drink that isn’t watered down with ice cubes. We also love Frost Buddy which is a stainless steel can cooler that works with over 500+ drinks making it another great choice to keep your favorite beverage cold.”

Decided to be a guest instead of the host this year? Don’t show up empty-handed, as you know how hard it is to be the hostess of an unforgettable event. A host/hostess gift is always a great idea, never expected but always appreciated. “We carry all sorts of fun hostess gifts. Our favorite is probably our Gurgle Pot because it makes fun gurgling sounds when you pour! It makes a fun talking point and it can also be used to display all your beautiful summer flowers  when you are not using it to pour your favorite beverage.”

their grocery area, The Market is full of ideas for entertaining beautifully. Multiple drink mixes, including the conversation starter UffDa Bloody Mary Mix (regular or spicy),  and garnishes such as stuffed olives, pickles, and jars of unique veggies are available here, as well as drink and partyware that ranges from fun and trendy, Minnesota-themed, and gorgeous glass. Many of the glassware options are in fun colors, such as turquoise, hot pink, green, and amber.

Cocktail Bomb Shop's cocktail bombs and Noble Mick’s single-serve craft cocktail mixes are good to keep on hand in your bar as they just need a few ingredients (spirit, ice) and you have an excellent drink ready to go. Keeping your bar stocked with basics (alcohol and/or dealcoholized if you want mocktails) such as rum, vodka, gin, tequila, and whiskey, along with these helpers make whipping up drinks at a moment’s notice easy. (See our mocktail recipes in this issue for further inspiration).

Trays are another party essential, making drinks and dips look appealing and stylishly presented, but also adding function. Transporting items from the kitchen to the deck, patio, and/or boat is made much easier if trays are used. From heavy plastic to glass to raw-edged wood, The Market offers a tray selection that is extensive.

Many of the wood trays are created here in Minnesota through local or regional artisans and one tray that will get mileage all year is the extended narrow version with raw edge, designed for boards (cheese, charcuterie). It features a handle for hanging and easy transport and is a conversation piece as well. To assist in your board assembly, check out the many cookbooks and the cheese board deck at The Market; you’ll be able to put together boards that look professionally done and that offer a beautiful array of colorful, flavorful bites for guests.

Candles are always a good idea to set the mood and provide a pleasant aromatherapy experience in your home. The Milkhouse Candle Company from Osage, Iowa has a huge line of scents and different sizes of white milk bottle or jar-inspired options, including a few that have summer-theme names, such as Summer Storm and Mountain Rain. The pleasant, light scents are a wonderful, warm and welcoming way to greet guests when they enter your home.

Placemats that are made from durable, recycled material and that do not lose their color or shape are another excellent addition to your summer entertaining. They protect your furniture from spills and stains while being extra-easy to wipe off and keep clean.

And, although cloth napkins are always a good idea in terms of beauty, environmentalfriendliness, reusability, and durability, sometimes occasions call for paper options. Having a selection of beverage and dinner napkins on hand in fun colors and themes make last-minute party planning and entertaining easy. Today, there are so many styles available for every season and in Minnesota, loons, lake motifs, anchors, boats, trees, and birds are extra-popular choices in the summer. For a kitschy option, check out the napkins, tea towels, and potholders that feature the official hotdishes of Minnesota as attributed to cities of origin. The Market carries these, along with Minnesota-shaped bamboo cutting boards and other state-celebratory items for party fun.

At the end of the night, go sit by the campfire. Laugh and enjoy every moment it offers with those you love. Don’t worry about the dishes, they will be there tomorrow. You have earned the respite after a job well done. Lake life is in swing and it is glorious!

Gone are the days when concrete was just the dull gray slab in your workshop. Now, stamped concrete has transformed this material into a creative canvas – truly it’s an artform and there’s so much you can choose from. The sky is the limit!

W. Gohman, a primary commercial and residential general contractor (serving central and northern Minnesota) does private and municipal projects. When it comes to artistry, they know what they are doing, as they’ve been in business since 1950. “We’ve constructed skateparks that have stamped concrete details in them. And we are working with the city of St. Cloud to beautify downtown [area] with 20-30,000 square feet of stamped sidewalks for that project.” said Mark Wolvert, who is a principal senior project manager at W. Gohman.

W. Gohman considers stamped concrete as an artform and you can see how excited they are about what they’ve been building for the last 73 years. With expert craftsmanship, the result is a visually stunning outdoor space that leaves a lasting impression.

H&H Masonry also works with stamped concrete and are a talented and skilled team servicing the Brainerd Lakes Area for the past 28 years. They also enjoy working alongside charities like Habitat for Humanity, which constructs houses for low income families in need.

Bitzan Ohren Masonry is another brilliant option when it comes to stamped concrete. They work on residential and commercial projects. They’ve been serving Central MN as well as the Alexandria area for over 30 years. Their portfolio is extensive and testament to the versatility that stamped concrete offers.

Patterns galore… which one is best?

Depending on the aesthetic you want your space to have, there are different reasons for choosing one pattern or texture over the others. There are hundreds of distinct patterns, textures, and many colors to choose from. If you want your stamped concrete to be customized, that’s definitely doable. “You can create your own pattern. It’s really up to the customer or municipality with what they want to do. It can be leaves, random design, foot prints, animal tracks, and a variety of different things.” said Tim Elness, Vice President of Business Development at W. Gohman.

If you have a log cabin and want your walkways or stoops to have the same rustic feel that matches the rest of your home but without the maintenance of wood, you can go with the stamped concrete pattern of wood or railroad ties. Perhaps you want more of a whimsical English garden feel in your backyard; in this case, a cobblestone look would fit your aesthetic better.

Paver patios have always been popular, but maybe you’d rather not have to deal with the upkeep that goes into having one. There’s nothing worse than re-leveling or adding sand every few years all to see it heave and dip after going through some of Minnesota’s notorious winters that quickly shift into wet spring and hot summer.

Since stamped concrete is low maintenance, it continues to rise in popularity and many home and business owners consider it a must in terms of choosing an option that will stand up to weather, traffic, and general wear and tear. Professional maintenance matters. Stamped concrete captivates with its visual appeal, its strength, and durability. With the proper care and maintenance, stamped concrete will withstand the elements, heavy foot traffic, seasonal changes, and the test of time. To ensure yours lasts for the long haul, the routine upkeep is important. The minimal maintenance makes it a practical choice for you whether you’re a busy homeowner or business seeking an aesthetic space that lasts and is easy to take care of. Maybe you have a patio, deck, or garage slab that’s a few years old, but you’re looking for someone to clean it and seal it again? Or maybe you’re remodeling your home and getting new siding that’s a different color and you’re worried about it not matching your current stamped concrete patio.

Clean ‘N Seal services the Twin Cities and Brainerd Area. They do exactly as their name Suggests; they clean and seal your stamped concrete patio (amongst other services as well) –whether it’s new or old. They’ve been doing this for about two decades. “We strip all the old sealer off and at that point we can recolor the concrete. This is pretty common. For years it was always earth tone colors; everyone wanted tans and browns, but now it seems like the trend is going to grays and blacks. After stripping the sealer off, we go and reapply the color,” said Jeff Essig, President at Clean ‘N Seal.

There’s an artform to maintaining stamped concrete and it is one Clean ‘N Seal has perfected. “Most people have us come out and clean it and reseal it every two to three years,” Essig said. Clean ‘N Seal is experienced providing cleaning services, restoration, and also sealing that’ll give your stamped concrete and other exterior surfaces a brand new life. They also use the latest and greatest restoration equipment to safely clean your concrete. Stamped concrete has truly transformed the way outdoor living spaces are designed, offering ablend of artistry and durability. It allows you to personalize like never before. With such a wide range of options, you can now enjoy your outdoor areas with more flair and style. L&H

hether you choose to imbibe or not, the stats speak for themselves. The non-alcoholic market of beverages has exploded into a nearly $12B revenue stream in just a few years. Today, drinkers and non-drinkers alike are choosing, even if only on occasion, to opt for beverages that are sans alcohol and the options now run the gamut in terms of dealcoholized spirits, wines, and beers, along with many packaged/ canned beverages that are ready to go, right off the shelf or out of the fridge. Gone are the days of only have one type of n/a beer and pop, juice, or water to choose from if you choose a night off or never drink; now, there are so many refreshing ways to go booze-free and indulge in “mocktails” that you can try new drinks to your heart’s content! Looking to kick these up into the cocktail realm? No problem! Just swap out the dealcoholized spirit for one with alcohol in it; it’s now that simple.

Chelsey Malstrom, General Manager for Seven Sisters Spirits in Detroit Lakes is a culinary school grad and passionate about all things flavorful when it comes to food and beverage. Here, Chelsey shares her recipes for refreshing summer mocktails and suggests n/a brands such as Ritual, Spiritless, and Seedlip as ones to try. Ritual, in particular, is a great one when it comes to building a non-alcoholic bar; the company offers n/a tequila, gin, whiskey, vodka, and rum. These are the basic spirits that will provide the foundation for mocktails and cocktails. Like wines on the n/a market, these have been dealcoholized, meaning that they are made the same way as alcohol, but then go through a thorough, rigorous (and pricey) process that extracts the alcohol from the product. Do note that with some spirits and beverages, trace amounts (such as .5%) alcohol can remain.

Here are Chelsey’s go-to recipes to keep you refreshed all summer:

Serves 6

Ingredients:

6 limes, juiced 20-30 mint leaves (plus a few for garnish)

2 T. Honey

6 oz. blackberries (1.5 C) (plus a few for garnish)

1 bottle de-alcoholized sparkling wine (Prosecco if making this into a cocktail) (750 ml)

Ice Sliced lime (6 slices) for garnish

Directions: Using a 2 C. measuring cup or a pint jar, combine lime juice mint leaves, honey,

and fresh blackberries. Next, using a muddler or end of a wooden spoon, mash the mixture into a consistency that is like jam. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer that is over a pitcher to remove seeds and leaves. Using the back of a wooden spoon, press mixture to release all of the juices. Discard berry mixture left in the strainer. Add the sparkling beverage (or Prosecco) to the berry juice in the pitcher; stir gently. Allow foam to settle. Add 4 C of ice to the pitcher, stir. Serve pitcher-style or divide among 6 tall glasses with ice. Garnish: Slice of lime, mint leaves, 2-3 blackberries. Serve immediately.

Ingredients:

2 oz. dealcoholized tequila

2 cucumber slices

1 T fresh lime

4 oz tonic water

.25 oz agave syrup

Directions: In a shaker, add the tequila, cucumber, lime juice, and agave. Add ice and shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled glass and top off with tonic water. Rim the glass with tajin for an extra kick. Make it a cocktail by using tequila of choice.

Singe serving recipe

Ingredients:

1 rounded tsp marmalade

2 T dark rum alternative (suggestion:

Ritual brand)

1 madarin, plus 1 slice

1 star anise

Ice or chilled tonic water

Directions:

Using a jar, add all ingredients up until the ice or tonic water into the container and screw on the lid. Leave sealed until ready to serve. To finish, add ice or chilled tonic water to the jar, screw the lid back on and shake very well to mix all ingredients thoroughly. Top with tonic water and serve.

One fun way to serve this is to use the watermelon with just the top removed about 1/6 of the way down and with the bottom cut off enough to make the watermelon stand on its own.

Ingredients:

1, 10# seedless watermelon (round/ oblong)

12 oz. frozen lemonade, thawed (can)

2 C unsweetened pineapple juice

Directions:

After slicing off top and bottom of watermelon, if you are using it as instructed above for serving, scoop out all flesh and place in blender. Blend until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer and discard solids. Next, place the juice inside the watermelon rind and add the lemonade and the pineapple juice. Mix well. Serve chilled, over ice. Stir the punch before you sip--Fun straws look great in this drink and do double duty for sipping and stirring! Optional: Garnish with a small watermelon wedge.

Mix in a pitcher

Ingredients:

1.5 C dealcoholized vodka

8 C cubed watermelon (approximately

½ of a watermelon; 4 C fresh watermelon juice)

Juice from 3 limes (approximately ¼ C)

¼ C honey, agave syrup, or simple syrup

½ C thyme leaves (washed)

½ C fresh blueberries (washed)

Directions:

Blend cubed watermelon in a blender and set aside. Add the berries,

Servings: 2 glasses (Tom Collins style)

Ingredients:4 fresh peaches

2 tsp sugar or sugar substitute (Note: Simple syrup may be used instead of sugar. Use 1 tsp simple syrup for every 2 tsp of sugar).

4-5 T fresh mint

4 oz white rum alternative (Ritual brand suggested) Ice

4 oz club soda (as needed)

Directions: Slice two peaches for garnish and chop the other two peaches. Place chopped peaches in a muddler or a cocktail shaker. Add sugar and rum. Muddle the peach, sugar, and rum until well combined and the sugar is dissolved. Strain with a cocktail shaker or directly pour into serving glasses that are filled with ice, mint, and peaches. Garnish: additional peaches. Add splash of club soda.

honey, and thyme leaves into a large pitcher and lightly muddle. Strain watermelon juice into the pitcher. Discard pulp. Pour the lime juice into the pitcher and add the vodka. Stir. Put the watermelon blueberry vodka mixture in the fridge for 2030 minutes to blend flavors. Serve in glasses over ice and top with thyme and a few blueberries. Rum or gin would work well in this recipe if preferred over vodka. This is also a fantastic, refreshing drink without the spirits/alternative spirits. You can also use sparkling water or water in place of the spirit.

FEATURE LAKE

John and Ashley Valesano had several goals for their new home on Gull Lake. First, it needed to be a functional, convenient, and flexible space for the two of them and for their two young children. It needed to be a comfortable place to live all year long, from the heady days of summer through the bitter cold of a Minnesota winter. They also wanted the house to stand out aesthetically, while still honoring (and blending in with) its surroundings.

FEATURE HOME

To accomplish that final goal the couple skipped right over typical Minnesota lake home mood board photos and focused on another landscape entirely: the mountains.

“Ashley and I were inspired by homes that we saw near Lake Tahoe and in Colorado ski areas,” explains John Valesano. “We liked the angular, asymmetric exteriors and the way that they often utilized similar materials throughout the interior and exterior of the homes, bringing the outside in. We thought of this as a ‘modern mountain’ style and wanted to infuse some of that archetype into a layout that would complement our lot and its panoramic view of the lake. We wanted something that was both comfortable to live in, but also had an interesting, beautiful look that was not your typical ‘up north’ cabin.”

It turns out that a contemporary mountain home translates beautifully to Minnesota lakes country. The couple worked with Baratto Brothers Construction in Cross Lake and Kevin A. Yeager Fine Homes & Interiors in Brainerd to transplant elements from the mountain homes they love into a Midwestern landscape. The result is a dynamic dwelling that lives in harmony with nature.

The home’s unique energy is evident the minute you pull into the driveway. This is no sleepy lake place. Instead, the front façade is broken up into several planes, a choice that adds interest and keeps the viewer’s eye moving. A diagonal roof section injects a sense of vitality. LP Smart Siding in quiet shades of rust and gray echoes the bark of the trees and fall’s vibrant foliage and lets the bold shape of the exterior take center stage. Darkly framed Marvin Windows blend into the exterior, a subtle touch that feels modern and minimalistic.

On the lake-facing side, the gentle curve of the patio arcs toward the water like the prow of a ship. The cable railing system recedes from view almost entirely, in order to highlight the beauty of the water. There are many places to sit and enjoy the sunshine and the sounds of the waves. Ashley and John can enjoy the fresh air from the primary bedroom balcony while their guests unwind on the spacious deck outside the great room or step out onto the patio from the walk-out basement. (The family’s sleeping quarters are upstairs, while the guest rooms are tucked into the sunny basement, so there’s plenty of space for everyone, both inside and out.)

A rustic stone staircase from Landscaping Etc. in Pequot Lakes complements the bold timbers and rustic stone columns along the back of the home. These natural materials look gorgeous and stand out against the siding, but that’s not the only reason the homeowners chose this particular combination of exterior elements.

“We used as many low or ‘zero’ maintenance materials for the exterior as possible,” says John. “This was one of the first things we talked to our designers about, as we wanted to minimize the amount of upkeep.”

This gives the Valesanos more time to be out on the boat, grilling on the deck, or gathering around a campfire. Since the family lives here year-round and they frequently welcome guests to their Gull Lake abode, the space needed to function well (and provide adequate storage) for the four-person nuclear family as well as their extended family and friends.

“I would call (it) a modern take on lake living,” says Eric Carder, Partner/Director of Project Development at Baratto Brothers. “This is also their full-time home for a growing family, so the design intent was to not only satisfy today’s needs but also to accommodate their changing needs.”

The 5,600 square foot home contains numerous spaces that serve the family and accommodate their guests. There are five bedrooms, four bathrooms, and plenty of storage space, as well as a few flexible, multipurpose areas that can change as the Valesano kids grow and the family’s home needs evolve.

The exterior of the Valesano home is striking, so the couple wanted to create some unique interior spaces to wow their guests, too. “When people walked in through the front doors and into the foyer, we wanted their attention to be drawn to two things,” explains Ashley Valesano. “First, we wanted focus on the features of the great room with its vaulted ceilings, large beams and prominent fireplace and then the large windows across the great room from the entry foyer that showed off the views of Gull Lake.”

Thin, stone veneer columns in the great room (installed by Jason Dano of Dano Masonry of Brainerd) mirror the exterior columns. The rough stone contrasts with the sleek lines of the wooden ceiling beams and the smooth surfaces of the fireplace, while was installed by Cross Lake Sheetmetal.

Eric Carder //BARATTO BROTHERS

“The fireplace is a combination of stone and tile,” says Eric Carder. “It fit the design intent and overall feel of the house which is a rustic modern design.”

This contrast between textures—tactile and rustic on one hand, sleek and modern on the other—subtly repeats throughout the home. The delicate interplay between nature and design is perhaps most noticeable in the kitchen, where light streams through the wide windows and bounces off the gleaming Cambria countertops from Supreme Counters in Brainerd and creamy cabinets by IvyWoodCraft in Merrifield, imbuing the whole space with a soft glow. The abundance of natural light, outdoor views, a soothing, neutral color palette, and crisp, clean lines create an atmosphere of quiet luxury. The kitchen opens onto other key spaces on the main level. This helps traffic, conversation, and sightlines flow, whether the family has company or not.

“We spend a majority of our time on the main floor, where the great room, dining area, and kitchen all flow into each other,” Ashley says. “The open concept floor plan of the main level provides a great space for entertaining not only guests, but our kids as well. “It’s incredibly convenient that the adults can be in the kitchen preparing dinner while our kids can be playing in the great room or doing homework at the breakfast nook, all the while sharing the same space as us.”

If it gets too crowded (or if the kids need to burn off some excess energy), there’s a solution close at hand. Like several other spaces in the Valesano home, this room serves one purpose at the present moment, but it can easily be converted into a different type of living space in the future. “We have a separate ‘flex room’ just off of the great room that currently functions as a playroom, where we can keep most of the kids’ toys out of sight,” Ashley explains.

This kid-friendly space is painted a deep and stormy shade greenish blue called Vanderberg Blue. It reappears in more adult spaces, like the bar in the walk-out basement, just off the comfortable family room. Softer greens pop up throughout the home, appearing in elegant herringbone shower tile or a striking bathroom cabinet. Glass shower doors from Fabulous Glass in Baxter keep all the focus on these carefully selected design elements.

Other custom spaces include a walk-in wine cooler and an indoor sauna tucked into the basement. The blonde wood and soothing steam provide an enveloping warmth in the cold winter months and an atmosphere of rest and relaxation all year long. An expansive shower and deep soaking tub with a treetop view add elegance to the master bath, while porcelain herringbone tile installed by Northwoods Contracting injects an unconventional and eye-catching accent in the primary bedroom.

A clean-lined, contemporary living space like this one depends on decisive design choices and a strong sense of restraint. But making a design-forward home comfortable for a modern family also requires practical transitional spaces and plenty of storage. The couple noted what worked (and what didn’t) in their previous home to maximize every inch of their new build.

“One of our favorite features is that our garage opens into the mudroom, and the next room in that hallway is our pantry. The ability to take just a few steps from the garage while unloading the car from the most recent grocery or Costco run seems like a small thing in the grand scheme of things, but is certainly not something we take for granted,” Ashley explains. “The last house we lived in had a detached garage that precipitated long walks with groceries and other things.”

Now those long walks in the rain or snow are a thing of the past. The enclosed pantry also solved a concern that’s quite common in open plan kitchens.

“Because of the number of windows in our kitchen, we were worried about cabinet space, so elected for a large butler style pantry,” Ashley explains. “It also provides a nice area to hide some of the clutter that might otherwise travel out into the kitchen.”

The pantry provides copious storage: tall shelves, deep drawers, and even additional counter space. It’s just another way that the Valesano home combines form and function.

This home showcases fresh, forwardthinking design and is certain to be one that the Valesano family will cherish for years to come. L&H

FEATURE HOME

When you walk through the entryway into this home, you can immediately see through the open kitchen, dining and living area directly out to a beautiful view of Long Lake.

“It’s my favorite part of this house,” says Kelli Wegscheid, AIA, owner and operator of Harmonious Architecture in Perham, who originally designed the home as a remodel.

Karen and TJ, the homeowners, came to Kelli soon after purchasing a 1960s home in the Detroit Lakes area. They wanted an architect who could do a total remodel design, and they were very happy with the plans she designed for them.

“I like clean lines and neutral colors, and I think of it as a contemporary prairie design,” says Karen. “I grew up in southwestern

Minnesota, where there are more prairie style homes, and I like that kind of architecture.”

The remodel plans they worked on, however, soon turned out to be new home plans.

Builder Andy Pettow, owner of Andy Pettow Construction in Perham since 1995, says the original intent was always a remodel.

“We were hoping to be able to save the foundation, but as we began demolishing parts of the home to begin the remodel, we discovered many flaws in the existing foundation, as well as areas of structural failure,” he says. “I couldn’t reason putting a totally new remodeled home on a foundation that had minimal structural integrity.”

The homeowners could see that they didn’t have any choice.

“Although it was not our intent, now we have a good solid foundation,” says TJ. “Kelli didn’t have to make too many adjustments, since we basically kept the same footprint.” Other than adjusting the location of a bathroom, the only other change was that a previous area that had been crawl space on the walkout level could now be opened up for some additional living space with the new foundation.

Kelli says they may have lost the original foundation, but actually gained a theater room.

“Another thing we gained with the collapse of the foundation was the hunting storage room,” says TJ. “The higher ceilings and concrete floors were also a plus.”

THE BUILD

Although acting as your own general contractor takes a lot of extra work and planning to manage all aspects of the home building process, these homeowners were up to the challenge.

“We had a great builder in Andy Pettow, who also built our first home on Detroit Lake,” Karen explains. “We simply wanted to manage the overall aspects ourselves, choosing all our own local contractors, and we even did some of the installations ourselves.”

With a desire to keep the footprint the same as the original house, which had just been a main floor and walkout, they added a second floor for the extra space they needed. That’s where they put two bedrooms for their teenage children.

“The bathroom up there has stackable laundry, so the kids can do their own,” says Karen, “and along with a family room, TJ and I both have office space.”

To provide natural light to the hallway, they added windows on the west and south side up high, and several upstairs on the east stairway wall.

96 Lake & Home Magazine JULY / AUGUST 2023

THE EXTERIOR

The Marvin windows all around this home, along with the steel siding and the distinctive design, complete the exterior look the homeowners desired.

“The cohesive styles and colors of siding and windows that TJ and Karen chose is what really makes the house stand out to me,” says Andy. “The color scheme is very original and unique to this residence.”

Called Quality Edge Vesta Steel Siding, those colors are Ironstone and Gilded Grain. Inside of the three-season porch and hot tub area, they used a different color called Sand Dollar.

The outdoor saltwater hot tub is nestled underneath the three-season porch. Covered and protected from the elements, it also provides some privacy for their family, while still offering a view out to the lake.

Another special touch on the exterior is a putting green on some otherwise unusable and hard-to-reach ground space.

“It was a raised area that would be difficult to mow,” says TJ, “so since we all like golf, we decided to try something different as part of the landscaping. The putting green was especially attractive because the water drains right through the artificial turf into the ground, making it totally pervious. We were able to measure it all out, order it, and fit it in.”

Additional landscaping was done by Blair Westrom Landscaping, of Detroit lakes, who removed a retaining wall, and returned the lakeshore back to natural grasses.

THE INTERIOR

The metal on the outside of the home transfers into metal touches throughout the interior of the home – from the backsplash in the kitchen, to the finish on the fireplace, and the stairway railings and cutouts.

Karen Buboltz | homeowner

The main floor design remained essentially the same as the original home, except that the two bedrooms became one larger master suite. The open kitchen, dining and living area focuses not only on the view of the lake, but on the simple lines Karen and TJ wanted, which also have practical and simple applications.

The alder cabinets, stained in a gray wash peppercorn, are from Southwest Interiors (SWI) in Osage, MN.

“We wanted them to go from floor to ceiling,” says Karen, “and they’re not only beautiful, but they’re all flat and easier to clean, with no cutouts in the doors.”

A waterfall edge island, a quartz material also from SWI, adds some drama, and continues the modern, clean look of this kitchen.

With the lighting, most of Karen’s focus was on the main floor. Built-in ceiling lights keep the kitchen bright, and three hanging globe lights accentuate the island.

All the lighting came from Ferguson Lighting in Fargo, ND, including the unique fixture in the front hallway, and the broad, circular “not your typical chandelier” with indirect lighting over the dining room table. Throughout the rest of the house, Karen kept the designs simple, but loves that most of the canned light fixtures are “square instead of round.”

When it came to wiring all that lighting, they worked with Malstrom Electric, in Detroit Lakes.

“Joshua Hanson, the Project Lead at Malstrom, had some great ideas,” says Karen. “He looked at our plans and was able to put many of our lighting and fan systems on a system where we can program schedules and operate them from our phone.”

“He was able to put many of our lighting and fan systems on a system where we can program schedules and operate them from our phone.“
Karen Buboltz | homeowner on Joshua Hanson of Malstrom Electric

Joshua says he installed the Lutron Caseta System that works with remotes called Picos.

“We can go through the system and design it so you have full functional control throughout the house – either in an existing home or a new build,” he says. “It’s tied in with a Wi-Fi system, and you download an App onto your phone. It’s like having a light switch in your pocket. As long as you’re linked up with the home’s Wi-Fi, you can tie in with the network.”

Justin Felt, Sales Rep at Ramsey Flooring in Detroit Lakes for 10 years, says that this couple chose some beautiful looking vinyl plank flooring to cover most areas.

“We installed their carpeting in the theater room, and we also installed vinyl plank flooring, of course, but TJ and Karen installed all of vinyl themselves,” he says.

As homeowners, you have to be motivated to do those kinds of installations on your own.”

The main level is from COREtec®, called Grandure Oak, which is very high quality, and highly scratch and dent resistant, according to Justin, and they chose an EverLife LVP upstairs.

“In the main level mudroom and half bath, they used a COREtec® Pompeii Oak, with a herringbone pattern,” he continues. “It looks like tile, but it’s a vinyl plank, and can be challenging to install with that pattern, but they did a great job. Their style choices were amazing, and it was great working with them.”

Although some of the vinyl plank flooring may have looked like tile, the only real tile work in the house is in the showers, and came from Design 2 Sell in Detroit Lakes.

“Matt Haverkamp did a wonderful job of installing the designs we chose,” says Karen. “On the main floor, there’s white subway tile mixed with glass blue subway tile, with a wave that looks like water. In the kids’ bathroom upstairs, there’s subway tile, but with blue penny tiles going down in a vertical strip, and a rock-looking tile on the bottom.”

Another interesting feature on the interior of their windows that provides a clean, finished look is something that Karen had seen done elsewhere, and decided to include in this home. Instead of finishing the interior of the windows with wood frames or sills, they are sheetrocked all the way up on the sides and across the top. There is only a simple sill on the bottom of each one, which is made of quartz to avoid any kind of interior water damage.

An open deck on the main floor faces the lake, with a covered patio below it. One of the favorite rooms in the house, though, is the 3-season porch off the dining room that’s fitted with a 4-track system of stacking vinyl windows. When the wall-to-wall accordion glass doors from Marvin Windows separating this porch are opened, the entire dining and living room becomes one continuous room with the porch that they can use when the temperature is right.

Karen claims that she wouldn’t change a thing about this house.

“I think of their style as modern but comfortable, and I ’m so happy that it turned out so well for them. Even with the foundation setback, they were able to build their home the way they wanted to, in a style they both love.“

“We learned from our other home about usable space, and I don’t think there’s a single room that we don’t use,” she says. “We love the house, the lake, the views, the wildlife, and the neighbors.”

Andy adds that working with TJ and Karen was a fantastic experience.

“I believe that the overall building process of the residence went very well. The floor plan was very interesting and unique, and it provides such great views of the lake from the living areas and the porches.”

Kelli agrees. “I think of their style as modern but comfortable, and I’m so happy that it turned out so well for them. Even with the foundation setback, they were able to build their home the way they wanted to, in a style they both love.” L&H
