The 80s-inspired bridal trends are making a strong comeback, and with them comes a new level of versatility and individuality. Modern brides want options, and fashion meets those demands with flair.
Waistlines are taking a new form this season, with Basque waistlines (a drop waist style) paired with exposed corsets, adding a bold touch to wedding gowns. Sparkles, bows, and playful pops of color are also becoming increasingly popular, offering a fresh take on traditional bridal looks. Brides today are also opting for versatility in their attire, with detachable elements like sleeves or skirts allowing for different looks throughout the event.
Bridal fashion is also embracing the multiple accessories, such as chokers, scarves, and veils around the neckline, making the dress even more customizable. For those seeking additional flexibility, brides are adding jackets or other layering pieces for the ceremony, then removing them for a more relaxed reception look.
This trend extends to hair and makeup as well. Brides are highlighting their personality through soft, natural hair for the ceremony, with the option to switch to a more relaxed and down-do for the reception. Makeup trends focus on lashes, glimmering highlights, and a fresh, pearlized look. To ensure your photos pop, consider making your makeup slightly bolder, with darker shades, so you don't get washed out under the lights.
Color is another exciting development, as blush pinks, peaches, soft lavenders, and even subtle metallics are taking over the traditionally white and ivory gowns. Mothers of the bride and groom are also embracing the use of jewel tones and metallics, adding to the richness and variety of the wedding aesthetic.
Ultimately, bridal fashion is about showcasing the bride’s unique style and personality. It’s a time to embrace individuality, from the gown to the accessories and beyond. Brides are looking for styles that reflect their own taste, mixing tradition with modern trends. [ aw ]
Among the loveliest of life’s milestones is that of a bride’s wedding day. Delicate blooms arranged in tasteful displays dot the scene, decorating tabletops, maybe even framing the altar. Blossoming bouquets, bold boutonnieres – flowers front and center at a wedding are as iconic as the white dress.
I think she would be proud, and probably amazed, at how far we’ve come. We’re just happy to continue the legacy.
Rachel Wassberg-Frisell
Rachel Wassberg-Frisell grew up with a fondness for floral. “I think I probably learned to make my first arrangement when I was about ten years old,” she thoughtfully recalls. “My parents started Dalbol Flowers & Gifts in 1984. Originally my mom's aunt and uncle were also involved, but they didn’t stay with it.” Rachel’s parents, Steve and Brenda Wassberg, continued operations together for decades until Brenda sadly passed away in March of 2022. The shop has gone through some major changes since then, including a move to Gateway Drive from their original spot in the 25th Street Market. Though Brenda couldn’t be around to see it, Rachel believes her mom would have approved. “I think she would be proud, and probably amazed, at how far we’ve come. We’re just happy to continue the legacy.”
That legacy began nearly 40 years ago when Dalbol Flowers was one of the very first tenants of 25th Street Market Shopping Center. The old location served them well for decades, but as their client base grew, so did their need for a bigger workspace. The move to their new location (1314 Gateway Drive in South Fargo) was completed January 2024, and Rachel is thrilled. “We have a much bigger building now!” Customers can continue to expect the same amazing quality and attention to detail Dalbol Flowers is known for, as well as some exciting new developments on the horizon.
“We are currently launching a new website that will help people choose their wedding flowers.” Rachel explains that this would allow customers to browse collections of coordinated designs similar to online shopping. “It will be helpful for people to see different ideas and see some price ranges. That way they can come to us with an idea of what they're looking for and make the process go a little smoother.” Adding rentals for wedding decor is another exciting development that she’s looking forward to implementing. “When I lived in Georgia, I was doing weddings full time, so I had all these décor rentals that I brought back with me. I think it makes sense that our next step is to add more options for the weddings and events space and show people what we have and what we can do with it.”
Rachel’s experience in the industry really speaks for itself. When she was young, she helped in the shop and began learning the basics of design. Later, she got married and followed her husband, a member of the US Air Force, to Georgia where he was stationed. “Having that kind of freedom because we were moving around, I was able to work for a lot of different places and see how things are done in different parts of the country.” That’s when big things started happening for her career. From 2017 to 2022, Rachel grew her own floral design business and landed some notable contracts. “I’ve gotten the opportunity to work on pretty major events for celebrities.” To this day, she still returns to Georgia to design flower arrangements for Goldman Sachs, sponsors of the Masters Tournament that’s held in Augusta. “They have a week's worth of events that they do during the Masters tournament every year, so I do all the flowers for their events during that time.”
Think about what things are going to be in your photos and what you're going to remember from the day, then focus your budget on that.
Rachel Wassberg-Frisell
Now that she’s back in Fargo, Rachel is taking over management of Dalbol Flowers and putting her skills to good use. “I’ve been a designer for probably 15 years now,” she says. “I would say in the first few years you don't really have your own style yet and you're kind of just copying what you see, but over time you learn what works and learn what you like.” Now the shop has developed a style of their own, one that focuses on gorgeous mixed arrangements of fresh flowers that tie together different species and textures, recognized throughout the FM community. When it comes to business operations, Rachel isn’t looking to change much from the way her father, Steve, has been doing things for decades. “I think the legacy of his leadership is that he made a very customer service-oriented business, and he always wants to say yes to people whenever possible. If somebody's calling and asking us to do something, we make an effort to accommodate them. That has really helped our business last throughout the years and survive. His focus on serving the customer is what got us through some of the tougher times in the economy.”
Brides who use Dalbol for their wedding arrangements can rest assured knowing their special day is in good hands. “We get a lot of positive feedback,” Rachel says. Additionally, she’s always happy to share advice that will ensure the decision-making process goes smoothly. “Couples who are planning their wedding should really think about [their] venue that [they’ve] chosen and the season that [their] event is happening in before selecting flowers. The most successful events that I've seen are the ones when couples have chosen a style that really complements the space and the season that it is outside.” This will help to simplify the process and create an end product that feels cohesive and well-defined. She also understands that color schemes are important, but matching flowers to an exact shade isn’t always possible. “Mother nature doesn’t do that very well,” she jokes, “so being a little more open-minded with trying to create a color story rather than match a specific shade is always helpful.” Lastly, she urges couples to be mindful of their priorities to maximize how their dollars are spent. “Think about what things are going to be in your photos and what you're going to remember from the day, then focus your budget on that.”
We get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing [a bride’s] face light up on the day of her wedding when she sees her bouquet. Creating that special atmosphere for everyone to enjoy – that’s really rewarding.
Rachel Wassberg-Frisell
Rachel’s passion for her line of work certainly shines through in her creations. She enjoys attributing to the bigger picture and providing memorable arrangements that have customers coming back time and time again. “A big part of our philosophy for the business is being there for all the occasions throughout somebody's life,” she explains. “We want to do their wedding, but then also be there for them during birthdays and anniversaries. If they have kids, we want to do their prom corsages.” She adds that stepping into a management position has taught her a lot of valuable skills. “There's always a balance between giving people what they want and what they're asking for, but also putting out your own ideas and suggestions into the world.”
At the end of the day, Rachel remains eager to learn and continue the legacy her father started. “Our family business has some unique challenges, but I think my dad and I have been a good team. He's seen that I've had so much experience in the industry and that I am up to date on all the current trends and technology. I think he’s finally comfortable taking a step back and letting me take the reins.” While the job isn’t always glamorous, she certainly doesn’t seem to mind. “I never dread going to work, which is much better than what most people can say,” she laughs. Even though her line of work can be exhausting, the one thing she’ll never grow tired of is the connection to her community and the smiles her flowers can bring. “We get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing [a bride’s] face light up on the day of her wedding when she sees her bouquet. Creating that special atmosphere for everyone to enjoy – that’s really rewarding.” [ aw ]
Enjoy this easy to make, buttery breakfast/ brunch hit that is full of cinnamon flavor! The sheet pan method makes it simple to cook for a group and serving is quick, as pieces are individually sliced.
1/3 C brown sugar
4 T room temperature unsalted butter plus 1 tablespoon butter, melted
2 tsp ground cinnamon
Pancakes
2 C whole milk
2 T lemon juice
3 eggs
3 T granulated sugar
3 T unsalted butter, melted, plus 3 tablespoons for greasing pan
Salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 1/2 C all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
Glaze
1 C powdered sugar
2 T whole milk
RECIPE and PHOTO BY STEPHANIE DISSE
Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place a 13x18 inch sheet pan in the oven. Make the cinnamon swirl: In a bowl, using an electric mixer or wooden spoon, mix the brown sugar, 4 T room temperature butter and cinnamon. Add 1 T of melted butter and mix for a few minutes until combined.
Make the pancakes: In a bowl, combine the milk and lemon juice. Set them aside for 2 minutes. The milk will slowly start curdling. Add the eggs,
sugar, 3 T melted butter, a pinch of salt and vanilla. Whisk until combined. In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking powder and baking soda. Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients and whisk until combined. (A few lumps are fine; you are not looking for an ultra-smooth batter.)
Pour 1/3 C of pancake batter in the cinnamon butter. Mix until incorporated. Add to a piping or zip-seal bag. Cut a small hole in tip of the bag.
Prepare the sheet pan: Carefully remove the sheet pan from the oven. Add the remaining 3 T butter to pan and brush all over. Pour the pancake batter in the pan. Pipe the cinnamon swirls all over then use more or less cinnamon swirl filling as desired. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Slice into 12 pancakes to serve. Make the glaze: In a small bowl, combine the sugar and milk. Mix using a spoon and pour over the pancakes. [ aw ]
Erin and Cooper Grensteiner married on May 11, 2024 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Fargo in a floral, delicate, whimsical, and colorful celebration. “We wanted it to feel like a spring garden,” says Erin as she looks back on their big day. Following their church ceremony, the reception was held at The Pines White Venue in Davenport, ND.
The couple met while attending UND in 2017 and were next door neighbors in Selke Hall. Although they were acquainted while living in the dorm, they didn’t begin dating until a few years later. Erin is from Fargo and Cooper is from Moorhead. Erin’s grandpa likes to joke that she had to go to college an hour away just to meet someone from across the river!
Everything can be overwhelming and having people who do their jobs well makes a huge difference. Also, communicate with your partner and enjoy the process. It will be over before you know it!
Erin Grensteiner
Erin is working as an occupational therapist predominantly in pediatrics, but she does have a few adult clients as well. Cooper is a special education teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in Fargo. In their free time, they love to travel, go to concerts or local live music shows, attend any type of sporting event, play board games, and spend time outside (walks, golf, pickleball). They also enjoy time with their families, friends, and dogs (Rocky and Raven). The two are always looking for fun things to experience in the community as well, including Red River Market, hitting a local coffee shop, or checking out breweries.
When it comes to your wedding day, Erin advises to trust and delegate to your team. “Everything can be overwhelming and having people who do their jobs well makes a huge difference. Also, communicate with your partner and enjoy the process. It will be over before you know it!” She adds that working with Abby Anderson Photography was a joy. “She listened to our style ideas and made sure to capture everything we wanted. She kept the day running smoothly, all while displaying her fun and kind personality. She made the day effortless and special.”
The Grensteiners honeymooned in Europe over the summer of 2024, which included a cruise. They visited Italy, France, and Spain and, as Erin states, “It was a trip of a lifetime!”

We kept our wedding pretty straight forward and didn’t have many quirky elements. However, our DJ ended up bringing a putting green, and in order to get us to kiss during the meal, our guests had to make a hole in one. Everyone seemed to really enjoy it!

Ever since Lindsay Piekutowski was four years old, she has loved baking. It all started with a batch of molasses cookies, which were Lindsay’s favorite and a regular baking staple made by her mother. Because of her affinity, Lindsay’s mother promised to teach her how to make them so she could have them whenever she wanted. Lindsay laughs, "By the age of four, I was in the kitchen making cookies by myself! Don’t worry, she was in the house with me too." That early love for baking sparked a lifelong passion for it. Cookies became her specialty growing up and eventually this evolved into her company, Sifted & Sweet Baking Co.
In November 2019, Lindsay started her business at home. She was teaching full time, so this was a side business. At first, she had been baking just for fun. “For about two and a half years, I did whatever I wanted and took some custom orders as they came in. But then around 2022, I started realizing that I might want to take this all a bit further.” She had big dreams and eventually bought a place to be her bakery’s future home.
Cookies launched the bakery. Today, Lindsay decorates many cookies for different occasions, parties, seasons, and holidays. And she also teaches cookie decorating classes. “I’ve done several wedding cookie designs, including a Mamma Mia set I did, which was really cute,” she commented.
In addition to her decorated cookies, Lindsay also makes custom cakes, each one an opportunity for her to get even more creative. Each cake she works on is designed to match the couple's unique personalities and their love story. Recently, Lindsay worked with a couple who requested a Scotcharoo-inspired cake. The flavor holds a significant meaning for the couple. “It was a creative idea, and it felt like it was more out of the box, because most people either want chocolate or vanilla. I was excited because I was thinking of a peanut butter caramel cake with some chocolate frosting,” said Lindsay.
One of the things Lindsay enjoys is sitting down with each couple to get to know them, to understand their vision, and understand their preferences when it comes to flavor, icing, colors, and the theme of their wedding.
There are plenty of exciting things that couples get to do when planning their wedding, but one that is fun and shouldn’t be missed out on is making sure to set up a wedding cake tasting session. The couple gets to sit down and try different cake flavors, fillings, and frostings. And cake tastings are not only about trying different flavors; they are about creating a memorable and personalized experience that reflects the couple’s tastes and vision for their wedding.
Lindsay’s cake tastings are hands-on and immersive. Tastings are $25, and couples get to sample a variety of cake flavors. “Then, if they order through me, that amount is taken from the final total,” said Lindsay.
Each tasting session is carefully curated with the full experience of a wedding day cake. For example, if a couple is interested in a strawberry cheesecake cake, Lindsay presents a slice that mirrors exactly what they would receive on their wedding day, complete with the fluffy layers of cake, the strawberry filling between them, and the smooth frosting. She goes a step further by offering a deeper exploration of the cake’s components. "I bring out the strawberry filling separately so couples can taste the layer on its own," she says. "I’ve also brought out small portions of the frosting, so they can decide if they like the texture or flavor and whether they want something different."
The cake tasting session is an important part of the wedding planning process because it ensures the couple's wedding cake is everything they have envisioned, from the flavor to the frosting and presentation. It is not just about picking a cake, it’s about ensuring every detail is perfect and that the cake is as memorable as the wedding day itself.
Wedding budgeting can be challenging, but Lindsay shared some pointers that will help couples when budgeting for their wedding cake and treats. “There are times where people do have sticker shock with cakes because they don't know that it costs as much as it does. But when you think about the time, effort, and love that the baker puts into it, including the consultation(s), that’s a part of it too. There is the time that they spend baking and decorating. It is a very involved process. One thing couples can do is ask for the base pricing and then at least they know their starting point. They can add 10 to 15 percent on top of that to get a better idea of what they could be paying.”
It is also important for couples to keep the lines of communication open with their baker. To share what they want or do not want, but also when it comes to budget concerns or questions. By establishing clear expectations from the start, couples can enjoy a stress-free planning process and ensure their wedding treats are both beautiful and that they fit within their budget.
Besides baking and decorating cookies and cakes, Lindsay also teaches cookie decorating classes. She first started teaching cookie decorating classes about two years ago around Thanksgiving. “It went okay, but I was not ready to keep running with it at the time. However, this year I've been offering them monthly,” said Lindsay. In these classes, each student gets a set amount of un-iced sugar cookies to decorate, icing bags, instructions, as well as a set of tools to use during the class. By the end of the class, each student leaves with their decorated cookies.
Since Lindsay now has a physical location for her bakery, she’s working on getting through her to-do list before opening. With a passion for creating cakes and cookies that elevate life’s most meaningful moments, Lindsay is ready to share her love of baking with the world. Whether it’s a wedding or another special occasion, she aims to craft sweet treats that leave a lasting impression. As she continues to expand her offerings and grow her business, one thing remains certain: the sweetest moments in life are often made from the heart, and Lindsay is honored to be part of creating those moments for her customers. With a future full of new opportunities, Lindsay is ready to take Sifted & Sweet Baking Co. to even greater heights, continuing to spread love and sweetness, one cake and cookie at a time. [ aw ]
It was a summer night in 2017 when Katrina and Spencer Sweeney met at a Tolna, ND street dance. The two grew up in small towns (LaMoure, ND and Larimore, ND, respectively) and love the charm of that atmosphere. “We loved growing up that way!” says Katrina, who works as a registered nurse at Sanford. Spencer is an engineer at CNH.
The two tied the knot on November 2, 2024 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in West Fargo. Their wedding was traditional, held at a beautiful church with the customary activities at their ceremony and reception (first look, first dance, mother/son dance, father/daughter dance, etc.) Kaitlin Rude of Kaitlin Rose Photography captured the special moments of the Sweeney’s wedding day and Katrina comments that she was easy to work with, relatable, and laid back.
“Neither of us had ever taken professional photos before, so we were a bit nervous. We didn’t know what to expect. But we could tell Kaitlin really loves working with couples and photographing the key moments. She had photos back within a few days and they were great! We are so glad we chose her as our photographer and will continue to have her work with us as things arise in our life,” says Katrina.

Katrina Sweeney
Although they didn’t include extra-quirky elements in their wedding, the Sweeneys did have their new puppy take pictures with them. He even wore a cute little bow tie! The couple loves being with him and enjoy going to breweries, trying new things around town, and spending time with family as much as they can. Their honeymoon was time spent in idyllic Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Katrina adds that it’s important to have fun in the wedding planning process. “You can make it as stressful or as fun as you want. Little things are not going to matter on your big day, so just focus on the big things and enjoy it!”

Laura Rotenberger knew she wanted minimal intervention during pregnancy and labor. While drawn to the idea of a home birth, she and her husband, Steve, live near Lisbon, North Dakota, on the family farm — about 70 miles from Fargo.
Laura was pregnant with their first child in 2016 when she learned that Essentia Health-Fargo had a midwifery program. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are advanced practitioners with education and training in caring for women throughout their lives. They have specialty training to do deliveries, postpartum care and comprehensive women’s health.
“I was excited to learn this was an option,” said Laura, adding that she was encouraged by a friend who shared her own positive Essentia midwife experience.
Essentia Health-Fargo has a six-member midwife team that currently delivers between 30-40% of the hospital’s babies.
“We work collaboratively with our physicians and maternal-fetal specialists for high-risk deliveries or patients with more complicated situations,” explained Denise Powell, a CNM of 15 years at Essentia. “They support our patients in achieving their desired birth experience, even if they need to transition from our team, which is rare.”
Laura began working with Denise for her first pregnancy. The expectant mother wanted to be unmedicated and labor alone as long as possible. “It was very much, ‘Let me be at my own pace and let my body do the work that it needed to,’ ” said Laura. “That’s how I wanted it, and the team respected that.”
“We are there to support whatever birth you want,” added Denise. “Sometimes people shy away from a midwife because they feel like that means they must have an unmedicated birth. If that’s what people want, we’re very well equipped to support them.
“But I always tell patients, ‘I’m not giving birth. You are, and however you want to, that is the right way to do it.’”
Denise helped deliver Quinn, a healthy baby girl, in April 2017.
Like her first, Laura’s second pregnancy went smoothly, and her son, Blake, was born in 2019. However, during Laura’s third pregnancy, in 2021, there were some tense moments. Jennifer Janke, another CNM at Essentia, was checking Laura during a contraction when suddenly she felt the umbilical cord.
An umbilical cord prolapse is a rare but serious obstetric emergency that occurs when the umbilical cord drops in front of the baby and passes through the cervix. With every contraction, the baby’s head was pressing into the cord, cutting off the oxygen supply.
“I remember thinking, ‘Just put it back in,’” said Laura. “I had no idea what a cord prolapse was. I hadn’t been Googling what could go wrong.”
Acting quickly, Janke used her hand to keep the baby’s head from compressing the cord. Laura was transferred to the OR for an emergency C-section. Ayker, affectionately known as the Rotenbergers’ “cord baby,” entered the world weighing a healthy nine pounds, six ounces.
Despite not being the experience she had envisioned, Laura was still thankful for the staff’s commitment to honoring as much as possible the physiological birth she wanted — and keeping her and her baby safe.
“It really put it into perspective for me when the on-call OB came in the next day and confirmed I had a true emergency C-section,” she said.
For her fourth and final pregnancy, Laura wanted to attempt a vaginal birth after cesarean, or VBAC.
“I knew my body could do it,” she said. “They told me I was a great candidate for it. I’m happy they worked with me.”
Laura continued to see Denise and the midwife team, this time in collaboration with an OB/GYN given the complications of her previous delivery. Just two days before her scheduled induction, Laura started spontaneous labor and successfully gave birth to her fourth child, Greta, via VBAC.
Laura credits the quality of care and teamwork at Essentia — and her faith — for being able to birth four healthy babies.
“I basically tell everyone I know about the midwife team,” she said. “They get to know you on a personal level and really care about what you want for your birth plan.”
Reflecting on why she enjoys being a midwife, Denise emphasized the personal connections she develops with patients like Laura. “I just can’t over-emphasize what a privilege it is to be allowed into the most private, vulnerable moments of a person’s life,” she said. “You can’t take that for granted.”
For those considering a midwife, Denise stresses her team’s commitment to safety while respecting patients’ wishes. “Sometimes people think that to have control over their birth and their birth story, or to choose a midwife, means they need to be at home,” said Denise. “Our entire team can support your low-intervention goals, but in a safe environment. Healthy mom and healthy baby are our first priorities always.”

Nestled along the idyllic riverside in Moorhead, Minnesota, RiverHaven Events Center has quickly become a cherished venue for couples who are celebrating one of the most special days of their lives. With its historic charm, elegant space design, and thoughtfully renovated building, RiverHaven offers a perfect blend of timeless beauty and modern convenience–from their soaring ceilings and stunning chandeliers, and glorious natural light setting the ambiance to the welcoming patio space overlooking the serene river.
RiverHaven Events Center opened in June 2020 and despite the challenges they faced as a new business during uncertain times, they flourished in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Kayla Cash, partner and Director of Sales is passionate about weddings and–her love for the wedding industry grew from a part-time role at a local venue to ownership of three thriving event centers: RiverHaven Events Center in downtown Moorhead, Sanctuary Events Center in downtown Fargo, and The Reserve at Woodland in Valley City. RiverHaven Events Center has hosted more than 425 weddings and counting. Kayla and her team pride themselves on building lasting connections with their clients, ensuring that each event is not only seamless but also deeply personal.
As a child, Kayla was given a “My Size Barbie” bridal edition. “I was seven years old and wore that Barbie's wedding gown, so there must have been something in the cards for me 20 years later,” said Kayla. During her first year of learning about the wedding industry, she was also planning her own wedding. “I had firsthand experience on what it was like to be a bride.” It was when she was a newly-engaged bride searching for a local venue to hold her own wedding at, that she ended up leaving a venue she’d been looking at, with a job.
One of her favorite wedding memories, was a surprise wedding for a bride during Covid. The couple had booked, but had to reschedule because of the pandemic and military orders. It was the groom and the bride's family who decided to surprise the bride with a wedding. The bride arrived at their church to find it filled with all her family and friends. They celebrated their reception at Sanctuary Events Center. Kayla always enjoys seeing couples choose family members to officiate their weddings. “I've also worked with sisters who were brides and two occasions where the mother and daughter were both brides at our venues throughout the years,” said Kayla.
Each wedding and corporate event is unique and depends solely on the people holding the event. Every day at work is unique and different for Kayla. “It's wonderful to work with a bride or groom years later when they're planning a baby shower, or their company books a corporate event with us. I also love running into couples in my regular day-to-day life and reminiscing about their special day with them. I'm extremely grateful we have a wonderful staff that truly loves what they do as well! We're like a big family and everyone works together to ensure each event is a success, which makes me love what I do even more,” said Kayla.
“The completed project consists of one large open space, with a gorgeous glass room overlooking the Red River, perfect for the ceremony and dance, a beautiful outdoor patio space for social hour, and a classy dinner area. The white textured wood walls as well as three large chandeliers also give the space the perfect ambiance for an elegant wedding, dinner, and dance,” said Kayla.
RiverHaven Events Center is managed by Kayla and her partners, Aaron Duma, Jon Rustvang, Jade Nielsen, and Ted Duma. The sister space, Sanctuary Events Center, opened in downtown Fargo in 2016 and is part of the venue collection. The partners are deeply grateful for the community's support of their venue and for the couples who have chosen—and continue to choose—them for their special day.
When it comes to planning a wedding, there are many to-do list items that couples need to check off their list. Having a list will help cut back on the stress. Here are some things to think about as well as questions to ask when booking a wedding venue:
• Make sure you have your budget figured out before you book.
• Make a detailed guest list to help figure out if the venue you're looking at is a good fit for how many guests you are going to have at your wedding. “We find that typically 70% of invited guests are able to attend, so keeping those numbers in mind helps tremendously with the budget,” said Kayla.
• Ask venues about food and beverage minimums. “This makes such a difference in the overall budget, and we are glad to have all-inclusive packages without any food or beverage minimums, so that there are no surprises for couples during the wedding planning process.”
• Ask about additional fees. “Many other local venues charge additional fees for security, bartenders, insurance, additional gratuities, etc. It all adds up quickly, so it's important to understand all the fees before booking a venue,” says Cash.
• Can you bring in your own vendors, or is there an additional fee for that?
• Is there an on-site coordinator for the venue included?
• What’s included in the rental (tables, chairs, linens, lighting, etc.)?
• Are there any restrictions when it comes to decorations?
• What time can vendors and your wedding party start setting up?
• How many hours are included in the rental? Are there additional charges for extending the time?
• Can you schedule a walkthrough or rehearsal before the wedding? Choosing the perfect venue is a big decision when it comes to planning your wedding. It’s the place you’ll have memories of when thinking back to your special day. Pick one that aligns with your wants and needs, but also your budget. By asking the right questions, you can feel confident and prepared for the big day.
As couples walk down the aisle and celebrate under the sparkling chandeliers, RiverHaven Events Center becomes a canvas for the joy, happiness, and cherished memories that define each love story. The care and passion Kayla Cash and the rest of the dedicated team does to ensure that every wedding is more than just an event—it’s a personal, heartfelt celebration of love, family, and connection. In 2009, just a year into business ownership, life threw a curveball at the Andersons. Abby’s husband, a land surveyor, contracted Lyme disease from a deer tick. His health declined rapidly, forcing him to leave his job for a year while he and Abby searched for answers about his condition. During this time, the couple sold their home in Detroit Lakes and moved closer to family in Moorhead.
“In the midst of these challenges,” Abby states, “I became laser-focused on building a photography business that could support our family while allowing me to care for my husband and daughters. Specializing in weddings was the ideal solution.” She explains that because of the cre-
“I became laserfocused on building a photography business that could support our family.”
Abby Anderson
Senior photos spark excitement in many students and one who experienced this is Abby Anderson, owner of Abby Anderson Photography. Her photo session led to an interest in photography, which was strengthened when she got married in 2005. “I was captivated by the magic of photoshoots,” she explains, “and I started taking photos for friends, capturing moments at weddings. I began saving every dollar I could to buy my first professional camera on eBay.”
Two years after getting married, Abby and her husband welcomed their first child, a daughter. Once their baby was a year old, Abby launched her photography business. “For a young, creative mom, photography was the perfect side hustle,” Abby says. “It allowed me to fill my creative tank while immersing myself in learning about camera settings, lighting, directing clients, and the business side of the operation, too.” Abby delved into the world of websites, marketing, pricing, and financial management.
ative pressure and long-term scheduling requirements, this type of photography offers a higher pay rate than other types and allowed her the flexibility she needed during a difficult season of life. “My parents and siblings stepped in to help me with childcare occasionally, which allowed me to grow my business while keeping my family at the center.”
Abby is passionate about wedding photography and says that the challenge of creating art in a fast-paced environment is what fuels her. “I thrive on connecting with people and working in a dynamic, unpredictable setting.” She adds that the difficulties she had in her personal life helped her to gain a deeper appreciation for the mental aspect of her work. “As a wedding photographer, I get to spend my days intently seeking out beauty, joy, and connection. This process is profoundly therapeutic. Building relationships with couples

and their families while getting a front row seat to their happiest memories feels like a privilege.”
Wedding galleries filled with classic portraits and genuine moments are something Abby states will always be treasured, and these are the cornerstone of her photography style. She has an affinity for iconic lighting, stating that a blend of natural and studio light results in an artful portraiture and an elevated image gallery.
Trends come and go, but Abby believes that natural color is key in the editing process. “A clean, lightly film-inspired edit means your gallery of images will beautifully represent your wedding story for decades to come,” she remarks. With more than 20 years of experience and nearly 300 events covered, Abby has watched as preferences and trends have evolved, noting the imagery that has stood the test of time.
In addition, Abby has mentored aspiring photographers through her Intern & Associate Program the past 10 years. “I offer hands-on experience in camera use, lighting, and creative business management,” Abby says, “and many of the people I have worked with in the program have gone on to build successful careers of their own. I’ve cherished the friendships formed and in 2024, I expanded my team by hiring my first associate photographer to meet the growing demand for portrait sessions. Empowering women to balance work and family life is a passion of mine.”
“Empowering women to balance work and family life is a passion of mine.”
Abby Anderson
Abby also hosts local photography workshops and classes on lighting and business. She conducts these at her studio, sharing techniques that have helped her grow a sustainable, rewarding career. She has expanded to offer branding, headshots, and product photography for business, and just for fun, creates floral artwork. She sells digital files and prints on her Etsy shop site, AbbyAndersonFineArt (https://www.etsy.com/shop/AbbyAndersonFineArt).
When choosing a photographer, Abby stresses that there are professionals available for every budget, but experience matters when it comes to capturing your once-in-a-lifetime day. “Look for someone whose style resonates with you,” she advises. “Find someone who has glowing recommendations from a recent bride and who is willing to provide full wedding galleries to review, not just a highlight reel on social media. A strong personal connection with your photographer will ensure an enjoyable experience.”
I prioritize unscheduled days to recharge and manage overflow tasks in my home or business.
Abby Anderson
Abby concludes that she is grateful to work in a creative field and connect with so many incredible families. Her advice for entrepreneur moms is to design a life that aligns with personal values. “Serve your clients with excellence, streamline your work, and protect time for the people who matter most.”
Tips for self-care amid the “juggle”
When balancing business, family, and personal well-being, Abby has a few practices that she states keep her grounded:
1. Saying No: “Being an entrepreneur means there is always more work you can accept. Holding strict boundaries for my work has kept this career sustainable.”
2. Margin in my Schedule: “I prioritize unscheduled days to recharge and manage overflow tasks in my home or business. One day a week,
one weekend a month, and a few one-week breaks per year are the goal. I don’t always get this, but I try hard to make it happen!”
3. Daily Exercise: “Gentle movement such as walks and Pilates keep me strong and flexible.”
4. Soup as Self-Care: “I like to think of myself as a “SouperHero,” relying on nutrient-packed soups to fuel me throughout the week. It’s truly my secret weapon! At the start of each week, I make a big pot of soup and enjoy it for days. While I don’t follow recipes, my soups usually combine four to five types of vegetables, a flavorful broth, a grain, a protein source, and full-fat, canned coconut milk. For me, soup is the ultimate meal.” Abby comments that her soups are perfectly balanced with protein, carbs, healthy fats, and fiber, plus they are hydrating. “Simmering vegetables in broth not only enhances their flavor, but also makes the nutrients easier
for your body to absorb. And yes, my family loves soup, too! It’s a household favorite and a simple, wholesome way we nourish ourselves together.”
5. Church Involvement: “My faith in Jesus is the cornerstone of my life and I know He is the one who has held my life together through the ups and downs. I love being involved at our church, living in community with our church family, and occasionally playing piano for worship services.” [ aw ]

2025 is the 18th year of Giving Hearts Day, the nation’s longest-running 24-hour giving event and one of the largest in the country. Dakota Medical Foundation, along with Impact Foundation and the Alex Stern Family Foundation, are honored to host this joyful celebration of the region’s Giving Hearts.
On Thursday, February 13, 2025, 625 charities will participate in Giving Hearts Day, which includes 50 new organizations. The goal this year is to inspire 75,000 Giving Hearts to support a charity through donating dollars, giving food or goods at a Giving Hearts Day Food Drive location (a map can be found at GivingHeartsDay.org), and/or volunteering
On Giving Hearts Day in 2024, 40,851 donors gave more than 87,849 gifts totaling $29.2M and since its inception in 2008, hundreds of thousands of generous donors have given $195M on this specially designated day. The organization states, “By emphasizing new forms of giving, Giving Hearts Day paves the way to the ultimate goal of being the most generous region in the nation. This means that the region will be number one for volunteerism, and Giving Hearts Day will be the number one giving day in the country.”
Additionally, representatives state, “The magic of Giving Hearts Day is that anyone who participates can become eligible for a significant gift to a participating charity by making a donation of $10 or more, making a donation at any Giving Hearts Day Food Drive location, and/or submitting a volunteer activity from January 13-February 13 or pledging to volunteer at a Giving Hearts Day charity.” There are also tens of thousands of dollars in “Golden Tickets” available throughout early giving (January 13-February 12) and on Giving Hearts Day (February 13). Golden Tickets are charity prize dollars that donors become eligible for through these same actions.
This event is a fun and easy way for donors to give and it’s a gateway for them to connect to charities doing important work improving health and quality of life in our region. The participating charities are in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Giving Hearts Day’s representative notes, “Knowing our region’s tremendous capacity to demonstrate kindness and generosity, we are confident that everyone can find a cause they are passionate about. With the gateway to connect with charities through time, talent, and treasure, there is no better time than Giving Hearts Day to start the cycle of giving. We are grateful for every Giving Heart that brings us closer to becoming the most generous region on the planet.”
The official hashtags of Giving Hearts Day are: #GivingHeartsDay and #GiveYourWay and the event can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. [ aw ]

Olivia Clennon from Liv Travel had her first big international trip when she was 15 years old. She went to Turkey by herself as an exchange student to live with her host family, whom she’s still in touch with today. “There were new exciting foods and a different culture. Everything was eye-opening. I spent a year living there, including time in Istanbul and Antalya on the Mediterranean coast. They say that when you go somewhere in the old world for the first time, it puts everything into a new perspective,” said Olivia.
Working as an assistant at a travel agency was Olivia’s first big-girl job. Eight years ago, she moved to a small town and wanted to keep working in the industry, so she started Liv Travel. It has grown over the years and now the company has returned to Fargo. “I love how travel can give us so many experiences and expose us to new things, whether it's bonding with someone you love or trying something for the first time.”
Travel at any stage in life is exhilarating, but inserting travel into your wedding plans makes for a magical memory that will never be forgotten. Olivia has helped many couples find honeymoon or destination wedding locations.
When it comes to destination weddings and honeymoons, choosing the right location is a crucial part of the journey. But, if planning a wedding in a different country or the mention of setting up a trip sounds like the last thing you ever want to do, then you might want to look into working with a travel agent, which can alleviate much of the guesswork and worry. “When it comes to travel planning, it depends on the couple what they want whether they're looking for. We work with elopements, secluded escape destinations, and even large groups. It comes down to how involved it is, how big or small the wedding is; we cover the whole range,” said Olivia.
A honeymoon is more than a vacation—it's a celebration of your new life together. Whether you're dreaming of relaxing on sun-drenched beaches, exploring cobblestone streets in a European city, or adventuring in the great outdoors, careful planning can make your honeymoon truly unforgettable.
Olivia mentioned that the Cancun area is popular. “I'd say Mexico is number one for sure. I’ve also had some interest in the Dominican Republic, because both places are accessible, affordable, and have a wide variety of resort options. I also find honeymooners love adult-only resorts and there are some great ones in the Cancun or Via Maya area.”
Destination weddings offer a perfect blend of romance and adventure, but also allow couples to celebrate their love in a setting that feels unique to them. Maybe the couple chooses a place where they’ve always wanted to go or somewhere they’ve been many times and love.
There are several places couples can choose from; from the ever popular beach destinations to
mountain getaways too. Mountain destinations are growing in popularity for couples seeking something out of the ordinary. Imagine exchanging vows in the shadow of the Alps or surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Rockies. These locations offer not just breathtaking scenery but also opportunities for cozy, intimate celebrations that feel magical. “A getaway to the Alps would make a special and meaningful destination wedding,” said Olivia. “The mountain vibes are something that’s gaining more interest as compared with the always-popular beach vacations.”
Travel agents are especially helpful for trips that require intricate planning or coordination, as their expertise can save time and help you avoid potential stress. This is highly beneficial, especially when planning a wedding-related trip. But before you make the decision to work with a travel agent or not, it’s important to consider a few things:
• What type of trip are you planning? A simple getaway or a destination wedding and a complex multi-destination honeymoon adventure?
• Consider your budget. While travel agents often have access to deals and perks that aren’t available to the general public, their services may come with a fee. However, many travelers find this cost well worth it for the peace of mind and personalized attention they receive. Before booking, ask the agent about their fee structure and any additional costs that might arise during the planning process.
• Research the travel agent’s experience and areas of expertise.
• How involved do you want to be in the planning process? Be sure to discuss your preferences upfront to ensure the agent’s approach matches your expectations.
• Read over reviews to see how other’s experiences were.
Olivia mentioned how important it is to give each other grace when traveling and to understand that when you travel together for the first time that you learn more about your partner plus how they might react under different circumstances. “When you are mindful of that and look at it as an opportunity to better get to know your partner and all their little quirks, it makes for the best kinds of trips,” said Olivia. Nicolle Johnson met her husband, Erik, in 2019 through a coworker, who happened to be best friends with his sister. It took just one meeting amongst friends for Nicolle and Erik to begin their relationship and on September 2, 2023, they married at Bois De Sioux Golf Course in Sioux Falls, SD. Nicolle is a native of Mandan, ND and Erik grew up in Glyndon, MN. Both went to NDSU and Nicolle now works as a registered nurse in the emergency room of a local hospital.
She describes their wedding style as “modern Boho”, a popular twist on Bohemian aesthetic, often combining earthy elements with more sleek, contemporary accents. The couple honeymooned in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and their puppy, Charlie, was one of their ringbearers at their ceremony. Another fun detail about their wedding is that their maid of honor and best man switched outfits prior to the grand march and pulled this off without anyone’s knowledge!
As for the wedding photos, the Johnsons chose to work with Laura Nesler, Willow + Rose Photo. “Our experience was exceptional,” says Nicolle. She explains that despite not having any experience working with photographers, she was excited when Laura replied to her inquiry. “Willow + Rose Photo was my favorite by far!” She adds that from their first meeting, she new Laura would be the perfect fit because she is personable and easy-going. “She went above and beyond by helping us create a timeline for our day so that we had a starting point. She was so responsive throughout my planning process every time I changed my mind. By the time we had our last meeting, she felt more like a friend coming to our wedding than a vendor I had just found a year prior.”
Laura kept the wedding on schedule and captured the important points of the day. “Laura has now photographed our engagement, wedding, Nicolle’s pregnancy, and the Johnson’s newborn daughter. Nicolle shares, “She has captured the biggest milestones in our lives and I am so excited for her to photograph more in the future.”
Nicolle’s advice for couples in the planning process is, “Invest in your favorite photographer and videographer. The day comes and goes so fast that you are left reliving it through photos and videos, so take the time to find vendors whose work you truly love.”
