As another glorious Minnesota summer winds down and kids head back to school, there are touches of autumn in the air. With that, we again began to shift focus to include new décor and aesthetic accents in our homes. As temperatures begin to cool and we ease into fall, rethinking our spaces to be cozier and more conducive to indoor living become our focus.

This issue, our feature homes showcase thoughtful design, construction, and attention to ambiance. Their unique qualities offer inspiration and ideas galore, and more opportunities to dream and plan if you’re in the market for a new or remodeled space. Not ready to make a move just yet? Many of our homeowners built inspiration boards for months (or even years) prior to building their custom dwellings. Many built for the long haul, easing into retirement or creating spaces where they can plan for aging in place. Whatever the situation, collecting ideas is a fun and easy activity, especially in

the months where we spend more time inside. Build Pinterest boards, clip photos from magazines, or print out pictures from online blogs, publications, or sites such as Houzz. com. As you get closer to the next steps in the design process, these boards and files will come in handy if you work with designers, builders, and architects.

You’ll also find ideas in this issue for autumn décor. Simple switches from summer motifs and color palettes to autumn textures and tones make the difference in a home’s look and feel. These do not need to be overtly “fall,” i.e. pumpkins, leaves, or holiday themes. Colors such as maroon, rust, dark gold, greens, and black are subtle hues that will warm up a room and pull in the colors we see in nature as the leaves turn and the weather shifts. Additionally, natural accents in furniture, including raw edge, one-of-akind pieces add character and conversation pieces to your rooms.

Also, don’t miss our story on fireplaces to learn about the latest trends to warm up your home while adding design flair. Fireplaces are a key feature in Midwestern homes, both for beauty and functionality.

There are different fuel options for you to choose from when it comes to fireplaces. "Options include gas fireplaces, wood fireplaces, and even pellet-buring fireplaces that use wood pellets. The ones that require the least amount of maintenance are gas fireplaces. By far, our gas fireplaces outsell all other fuel sources,” said Kevin Pietz.

In the Walker, MN area, dealers are seeing other trends. Recently, many people are offsetting the cost of heating their homes by choosing wood-burning fireplaces. “As far as the fuel trend in our area, wood is increasing over gas as consumers see this as an alternative to provide backup heat and offset the costs,” said Gary Wilkening from Wilkening Fireplace Company in Walker, MN.

Brick fireplaces are timeless classics, and they continue to reign as an old favorite in the realm of home design. They have a rustic charm and exude coziness which blends so well with a contemporary aesthetic. The same thing is true about stone fireplaces. “We have linear fireplaces, which have been around for a while, but they are really starting to take off up here; the caveat is that they are using rustic finishes around them. So, you will get this linear modern-looking fireplace with river-rock like the kind you’ll find up near Duluth. The trend is going to rustic with modern fireplaces. People want rustic rock,” said Kevin Pietz.

If you want to include a mantel above your fireplace, that’s something you’ll want to take into consideration with the design. Besides being a great spot to hang and display seasonal decor, a mantel completes the look of your fireplace. It also provides a great opportunity to display photos and other decorative items.

When it comes to living in the Midwest, our winters are long and excruciating, so it’s always a good idea to enjoy every bit of the warmer months outside. One way of doing this is by turning your backyard into a vacation spot by adding something like an outdoor fireplace. “The outdoor living area becomes a kind of vacation spot in your own backyard with the fireplace, the outdoor kitchens, and the landscaping. People are choosing to stay home and spend some money on their own yards,” said Berglind.

Wood is an exceptional addition, from ceiling to floor. An efficient way to update the ceilings in your house is to add wooden beams. The color and texture of the wood add a glowing warmth along with depth and texture. Whether it be raw or sanded smooth, there is no piece of wood identical to the other, adding true authenticity. Wood floors have been around forever and will continue to be, as they are not only durable, but grow more beautiful with age.

The woodworking craft is an art form that has been around for ages. You can see the true craftsmanship in every turned bowl, hand carved bird, or skillfully made piece of furniture. Adding a piece of warm wood is

Chicken & Pesto Stuffed Peppers

INGREDIENTS

3-4 medium yellow, orange, red, and/or green bell peppers

1 ½ C shredded rotisserie chicken

2 C cooked brown rice

1 C prepared pesto

1 T toasted pine nuts

1-14 oz. can diced tomatoes

1-7 oz. package sliced Havarti cheese

Fresh basil leaves, chopped or torn into small pieces (optional)

THE METHOD

his is a good option for an easy dinner that’s flavorful and that is quick to make. By using rotisserie chicken that is already cooked and a prepared pesto, the prep time is short (approximately 10 minutes). The result is a tasty and unique addition to your dinner menu!Turn on oven broiler to high. Cut peppers lengthwise in half; remove stems and seeds. Place peppers on a baking sheet, skin side up. Once broiler is ready, broil the peppers 4 inches from heat until the skins blister, about 5 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine chicken, rice, pesto, pine nuts, and tomatoes. When cool enough to handle, fill the peppers with the chicken mixture; return to baking sheet. Bake until heated through, about 5 minutes. Place a slice of Havarti cheese on top; bake until the cheese is melted, 4-5 minutes. If desired, top with fresh basil.

aybe you’ve done all of the obvious projects—painted the walls, bought new art and rugs, switched out the fixtures or flooring, and purchased or rearranged the furniture, but your home still doesn’t have the clean, minimalistic look you want. Or, maybe you’re designing your dream space and you want a fresh and modern look. The good news is that you have many options to consider and they are well beyond basic; they are contemporary takes and upgrades that offer flair along with function.

Here are options to think about in terms of types and designs: What is a cable railing?

Either way, a cable railing system might be the solution to your design problems. A cable railing replaces a weighty, traditional wood railing with a series of posts (which are usually made of metal or wood) that are connected by a metal wire. The wire’s tension keeps the whole system upright and provides long-lasting support.

When used indoors, the thin cables recede from sight almost completely, giving staircases, lofts, and interior spaces a contemporary vibe. When used outdoors, the view beyond the deck or patio becomes the star. The metal is powder coated to protect it from the elements and match the railing and posts to the rest of the design.

What is a glass railing?

A glass railing system has a similar effect. Instead of metal wires, a seamless stretch of durable glass runs between the posts or up and down the sides of the staircase. This allows the entire system to disappear from view almost completely. Natural light pours into interior spaces almost completely unimpeded. Outdoors, the eye moves through the glass railing to drink in dramatic lake, lawn and forest views.

We spoke with two experts about the investment and expertise needed to install a cable railing or glass railing, which homes look best with cable railings (and a related design element, floating stairs), and what homeowners should know about having and maintaining cable or glass railing system.

How can switching to a cable or glass railing change a home’s overall look?

“Wood railings tend to lean more warm and traditional,” says Matt Esau of Viewrail, a cable and glass railing company headquartered in Goshen, Indiana. “Metal railings give a sleeker, more modern look. If you want to make a house look more up to date without much effort, swapping out an old railing for a new one with metal posts and cable or glass infill can immediately enhance the space.” The effect can be stark and minimalistic or more nuanced. A variety of customization choices make it easy for homeowners to find the right balance.

What customization options are avail- able?

“Wood to metal can provide a modern or industrial appearance,” says Kasey Larson of Medic Metal, a Lake Park business that provides custom metal railings tailored to a customer’s project. “Depending on some of the design choices (powder coat colors, height, tubing choices, cable system end options, and cable diameter) it may look like a marriage of both.”

“Different companies offer different levels of customization,” adds Esau. “At Viewrail, we pride ourselves on being the most customizable railing option out there. That doesn’t just mean we have countless post mounting styles, powder coats, metal types, wood species, stains, finishes, materials, and infill options. It means we have the perfect combination for you and your space.”

What’s so appealing about choosing a cable or glass railing system?

“Most people want to never have to think about it again once they’ve bought it,” explains Esau. “That means designing railings that blend seamlessly into the background, suit the overall design aesthetic of the space, and don’t require a lot of maintenance.”

How long does this kind of system last?

“It’s hard to say, depending the environment it’s subjected to,” says Larson. “It will outlast the decking it’s mounted to for sure.”

Obviously, exterior decking systems will experience more stressors (wind, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations) than an indoor cable and railing system. But even so, the overall maintenance required is negligible. The most common concern (indoors and out) is that a cable might need additional tension. Other than that, Larson says the biggest thing outdoor systems need to last for years is a quick spring cleaning annually.

What’s the biggest trend in the industry right now?

“At the end of every cable is a cable system end to be outfitted with an anchor, or tensioner type end,” explains Larson “The industry has grown, so the cable system ends they offer are so sleek and clean—and in some cases unnoticeable.”

But the near invisibility of the cable system ends comes at a cost—literally. (“They’re so expensive,” Larson admits.) Homeowners need to balance their aesthetic ideals with real world budget concerns.

How does a customer know if they’re a good candidate for this type of railing?

“If they’re willing to spend the money,” Larson says frankly. “It’s expensive for the ends and all the holes that we need to drill to allow the cable to run.”

But as both Larson and Esau mentioned, once the cable and railings are installed, there’s very little maintenance required for both interior and exterior metal and glass railing systems. These systems last a long time and they’re highly resistant to damage from people and pets, termites and time. For homeowners who stay put, the larger initial investment pays off over the years.

Which kind of interior looks great with a cable railing?

“These are best in an interior without little kids,” says Larson, highlighting perhaps the largest concern with cable railing systems. “To them, it’s a ladder. Cable railings are also good for homeowners who want to see through more, without having their sightlines broken.”

For families waiting a few years until the youngest kids are grown up can bring peace of mind. If a home is child-free, the cable railings are a good option as there won’t be the same safety concerns as in a home with kids.

How can homeowners really shake up the look of a staircase?

Switching out a railing system is only the first step. Homeowners can also opt for a floating staircase. A floating staircase is anchored by a metal stair stringer that supports the stairs from the bottom. This is very different than a traditional staircase, which uses a wood stringer on either side of the steps.

This type of staircase removes physical and visual barriers and emphasizes negative space. It looks right at home in contemporary, minimalistic, industrial, and art-filled interiors. Homeowners typically select a glass or metal railing to preserve the light and airy look that a floating staircase provides.

A variety of stair treads are available in a range of colors and materials. (A tread is the flat portion of the step that you put your feet on in order to go up or down the staircase.) Tread material isn’t the only variable to consider, however. The size of the tread also matters to the overall look of the staircase.

“Wider treads take up more space and command more attention,” Esau explains. “If you have a large space you’re trying to fill, or want to draw additional focus to the staircase, go with wider treads.”

How does a customer know if they are ready for a change?

So how does a customer know if they’re ready to take the plunge with a new cable and railing system or a net set of stairs? Esau says to go with your gut.

“If you find yourself constantly trying to cover up the parts of your stairs and railings you don’t like – with artwork, or furniture, or fabric runners, for instance – then that’s a pretty good sign that it’s time for a change,” Esau says. “For folks who want to create their dream space, it has to start with the finishing touches, no distractions.”

Can people install products on their own? Or is this a job for the pros?

As with many design and construction projects, the answer to this question depends on the skill of the homeowner and the project itself. Stairs are a real challenge for all but the handiest and most experienced of homeowners.

Railings are a little easier to install. Larson says many homeowners will be able to put in most Medic Metal cable and railing systems themselves. There’s just one caveat: “The biggest thing is to keep the posts in line, since they’re not connected,” he stresses. Viewrail offers a different set of products. So Esau advises that homeowners consider their own skill set and consult with the expert assigned to their project to find the best course of action.

the candle market is massive and there is no shortage of options when it comes to type, size, and scent. 2022 statistics from Grand View Research (grandviewresearch.com) state that the candle industry in the US alone reached $12.88B, with anticipated growth of nearly 6% within the next eight years. Why are these once rather non-descript décor items now a go-to decorative touch? Simple. They set the mood of the home, add scent (if desired), and they create warmth in the overall vibe of a space. Although popular throughout the year, Fall is when they fit so well; the amber glow of the candle’s flame blends in with the autumn aesthetic perfectly.

When it comes to shopping for candles, it can be a little overwhelming at times; there are simply so many to choose from that after smelling several and seeing all of the shapes and sizes available, choosing what’s right for your home may be a time-consuming task. However, learning a few basics about candles can help shorten the search and hopefully get you on your way to enjoying your new purchases.

There are six main types of candles and they are container, tealight, votive, pillar, taper, and flameless. Many are scented with essential oils, yet the cheaper brands will still include synthetic (and toxic) fragrance and chemicals. With candles, quality goes a long way in terms of decreasing toxicity, increasing the authenticity of scent, and also enjoying longer burn times.

This type of candle is what you’ll find in nearly every gift or design shop in the area and they are typically soy-based. Some, such as the brand WoodWick feature an alternative to the standard candle wick. Theirs are a slim, flat piece of wood that allows the candle’s flame to flicker and crackle, much like a larger fire would. For some, the sound may not be desirable and for others, comforting. This brand is not only highly accessible in stores and online, it offers an array of scents that range from floral to citrus, woodsy and natural, and comfort-focused such as cookie, cake, and maple inspired. They are made by one of the candle industry’s mainstays, Yankee Candle, and now offer a luxury line that features upscale glass, modern shapes of containers, and new blends of scents such as Smoked Walnut & Maple and Hinoki Dahlia, Lavender Spa, and White Teak. One spot in the region where you’ll find these is at Red Willow’s two locations in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Another option for container candles is made in Waubun, MN by the small business Cedar Sense. Popular scents that they make are Eastern Red Aromatic Cedar, Eastern Red Cedar and Fraser Fir, and Cedar With White Sage and Lavender. The candles come boxed and ready for gifting and include a frosted glass, branded container (lidless). They are available online at cedar-sense.com and at Mainstream Boutique in downtown Detroit Lakes, MN.

Beautiful Junque in Detroit Lakes, MN carries a vast selection of locally-crafted candles, including those by the mother/son duo behind FSR Soap Company, a Fargo-based artisan goods shop. Their container candles, available in Mason jar style, short cylinders with lids, whitewashed squares, and dough bowl styles, are known for their captivating scents that are derived from pure essential oils. The candles are soy-based and a top seller is "Shiplap," however, this season's new releases Vanilla Pumpkin, Woodland Maple, and Pumpkin Waffle are already popular autumn picks.

Tealights:

Tealights have been part of events for years, but today’s tealights typically feature LED lighting versus a flame. This is, in part, due to safety, as the small candles burn down rather quickly, making them susceptible to the metal casing getting very hot (and possibly damaging furniture) and the flame being only minimally contained. Tealights are inexpensive and sold in packages of 2+.

Votives are another small option and there are many scents on the market; unscented votives are also popular. These are typically placed into a small glass cylinder and, like tealights, there has been a rise in LED votives versus those with a flame. Traditional votives burn quickly compared to having the lasting light of an LED that will be on for many hours before needing replacement.

Pillar:

Pillar candles come in many sizes and these are often seen on console tables, mantles, and in groupings on various shelves in a home. Three together of different heights makes a statement and using flameless LED candles is an option if you want them to be safer and offer a flickering flame-like light for an extended time. You’ll find every color and scent of pillars imaginable, along with plates, trays, and various holders to add extra flair to the home’s décor. Placing natural pieces such as branches, foliage, and also faux florals are trendy ways to liven up the candle display.

Taper:

Tapers are used in candelabras, antique chandeliers, old-fashioned Christmas tree decorating (think St. Lucia Day in Sweden style), and in single holders. Ranging in width and height, as well as in unscented or scented versions, tapers are what we think of when it comes to the dinner table or perhaps a church ceremony. They are more formal. Yet, brands like Root, sold nationwide and at area spots like Red Willow in Detroit Lakes and Wild Goose in Perham, MN, offer grainy-texture candles that are thicker width and they come in shorter heights. These have an indented base, so they won’t always fit in every taper holder, however, they burn long and clean. Most are unscented and this is something to be mindful of if you’re using tapers at the dinner table; unscented candles (of any shape or size) should be unscented if people will be eating around them. The scented candles are too pungent and will affect the overall taste and smell experience for diners.

Flameless:

Look for LED lights in all shapes and sizes; these are wonderful additions to the home that are worry-free and safe around kids. Regular candles are a safety hazard around children and need to be left in plain sight, not burning in random rooms unattended. Having flameless candles around an area you’re entertaining in will add warmth and exceptional ambiance, thus setting the mood for the guests.

INGREDIENTS

¼ C olive oil (note: Choose a good quality EVOO for the best taste results)

2 T Red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar

1-2 cloves garlic (minced)

4 C cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters

1 English cucumber (long), quartered lengthwise and cut into small squares

½ medium red onion, thinly sliced

Roughly chopped fresh herbs (basil, cilantro, dill, mint, parsley all work)

Salt and pepper (to taste)

THE METHOD

In a large bowl, whisk the olive oil, vinegar, garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the tomatoes, cucumber, and onion and toss well to combine. Let sit at room temperature at least 20 minutes, or refrigerate overnight. Before serving, add the fresh herbs and toss.

This refreshing salad is quick and easy, plus full of flavor! Using simple, garden-fresh ingredients (either from your garden or someone else’s), this one is a hit at parties or a great staple for a fast, healthy side or meal. You can experiment with fresh herbs and add more garlic if you want to punch up the flavor even more. As we settle into the natural progression of the fall season, the feeling of ease reflected in the home evolves into comforting hibernation. Short sleeve shirts are put away and are changed into their longer-sleeved cousin. The light salads of summer are replaced by thick soups. Varieties of gourds and dried grasses are placed where the once vibrant flowers adorned a front stoop. Though the warmth and liveliness of summer will soon come to pass, there are a plethora of fall amenities to embrace.

Comforting Colors

When thinking colors, dusty jewel tones are the pinnacle of accents to add to your home. This fall, we will see muted tones in the spotlight. Deep mustard yellow brings the color of the sun into the house as the days begin to shorten. Sage green incites memories of walking barefoot in the mossy, soft grass. Rosy violets bring a soft but cool freshness and spark of vibrancy. Rich red magentas provide a striking and bold welcome of coziness. An array of slate blues evoke the feeling of relaxation, reflecting the color of the sky as the sun begins to set. Warm, caramel browns, creams, stone whites, and charcoal blacks are exemplary classics, never to fade away and are always a must. And softer, lighter peach hues are popular, straying away from the traditional pumpkin orange.

Textures

Velvet continues to reign as a trendy classic for fall with pillows, throws, and furniture. In addition, we see several thick, chunky knit throws and heavy, wool blankets on the market. Texture is always a must in any home decorating, but especially in the fall. These range from rough, bumpy, smooth, silky, heavy linens or leathery.

Organics

Using natural elements throughout your house should look “just collected” and real. If you are going the faux route, make sure to have plants and accents look as real as possible. Decor such as plastic pumpkins and silk flowers make a home look dated. Instead, look for fall branches, apples, pears, weathered gourd bird houses, fall greenery, and dried flowers. Don’t forget to go out in nature for some of these! Minnesota offers an infinite supply of decorative touches that can be gathered in your own yard or the woods.

The kitchen is the unofficial gathering grounds of the house. Whether you are a family of one, seven, or entertaining a group of 20, the kitchen is where everyone will inevitably be all at once. To help your home reflect the sensations of the season, there are fun ways to enhance your environment.

The end of summer brings many local artisans and their kitchen creations to the area through their processes of canned goods. These goods are an art form that is not only appreciated by our stomachs, but a great gift to give to friends, and a simple way to add some uniqueness to a counter or table scape. The natural depth of color and texture is a great way to add an accent alongside a stone or wooden bowl filled with fruit or to embellish a charcuterie board.

Florals are also a great addition for a pop of color and texture. Whether they be real or faux, a bundle of deep oranges in a Mason jar or an older, unique glass lends a combination of depth and brightness to the environment, pairing perfectly with the sensational, spicy smells of autumn. Incorporating apples, berries, and thin cat tails are an excellent addition to any bouquet. Natural elements such as wood slices or birch branches bring the simplicity of Mother Nature indoors.

Decompress in the Living Room

The comfort of a thick blanket, oversized, soft pillows, paired with a big glass of red wine, beckons to be snuggled into and enhances the feeling of relaxation after a day of work. Let the combination of mustard yellow and slate blues bring a sense of peace as you cozy in for the night. There is no such thing as too many blankets or pillows when it comes to the season of nesting. A variety of textures enriches the environment, bringing depth to any size of the room.

Pampas plumes are a soft way to add a burst of brightness in a tall vase, placed perfectly in a corner of the room or by a doorway. Monochromatic bundles of flowers such as mums, zinnias, and hydrangeas placed throughout the room are simple but bring a burst of joy and optimism. A more traditional collection of stems and leaves in a simple vase or pitcher, is a great way to celebrate the fall foliage. The deep red of dogwood branches, the vibrant yellows and oranges of a Maple, and the greens and berries from rose hip branches are the trifecta of tradition. To add a hint of northwoods, add some pheasant feathers and an arrangement of deer antlers.

A Bohemian Paradise

Is there anything better than a sunny porch on a fall Saturday afternoon? Wearing your favorite oversized sweater, being wrapped up in a big, chunky blanket, enjoying a hot cup of coffee, reading your favorite book for the fifth time or enjoying a new adventure... this is autumn in a nutshell. Fill your outdoor oasis with a variety of giant oversized pillows atop the perfect, chunky rug. Enjoy an indoor hammock, macramé swing, or the traditional porch swing, brimming with soft linens to keep the cool chill at bay.

Along with the soft lighting of lamps or a string of Edison lights, candles offer a soft light. Candles also enhance the senses with their many scents, including rich blends of cinnamon, cloves, sage, bergamot, and eucalyptus

Not all floral arrangements are necessarily vase-bound. Wreaths are a unique and creative way to add foliage to a smaller space. Simple metal rings hung with thin jute rope, adorned with delicate branches, dried flowers such as straw flowers, lavender bundles, eucalyptus branches, and berry sprigs bring a colorful but minimalist element.

The Great Outdoors

Fall naturally welcomes herself to your yard without much need of assistance. But we can help adorn her with some gifts. Replace the flowers in your pots with a combination of ornamental cabbages, tall grasses, and gourds or try arranging dried hydrangeas in a galvanized bucket. Dried hydrangea bundles in a galvanized bucket. Freshly picked ditch wildflowers in an old crock. A tall, mixed bundle of native grasses, wrapped in wide, natural fiber ribbon.

Make decorating the outside of your house a family event. Take the kids in your life to the pumpkin patch for the day and have them create a uniqueness all of their own. Have a campfire in the backyard where everyone can collaborate on outdoor creations. Try a pumpkin topiary with burlap bows, wrapped in white lights perhaps.

For a bolder statement, paint your front door a colorful color. Hang large, showy wreaths that can be seen from the road. Create a bountiful display of pumpkins and gourds, fountaining down your steps, with accents of mums throughout.

Make it Uniquely Your Own

Take the time to plan out and decide on your color palette. Use elements you already have, but recycle your dated decor. Find ideas you like. Decorate in layers, using natural elements and textures. Have fun!

With every change of the season, we have a natural change of our senses. Assist the organic evolution of each season by enhancing the sanctuary of your home to reflect each of the senses. Visually add colors that bring a sense of relaxation, comfort, and peace. Celebrate the crackle of a fire either in a fireplace or at a firepit in the backyard with friends. With a level lot and 100 feet of lakefront, this piece of property on Otter Tail Lake seemed like the perfect place for Marilyn and Dale Nelson to build a home.

“We have three adult children and eight grandchildren, and we wanted a place by the lake where we could gather and enjoy family times together,” says Marilyn.

Although the new structure is a spacious two-level home, with four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and more than 3,000 square feet of living space, Dale Nelson claims this house, “is about as cozy as any we’ve ever had.”

This North Dakota couple both enjoy the process of renovating, building and decorating homes; they have plenty of experience in that area.

When they purchased this property, Marilyn says there was only a three-stall garage on the back of the lot.

“Since we wanted to be there during the construction of the home, we first converted the third stall into living quarters.”

The Nelsons chose a local family-owned father-daughter business, Bladow Construction in Battle Lake, for their builder and general contractor.

“My grandpa started Bladow Construction in 1966, and I’ve been involved with my dad in this business for quite a few years,” says Tiffany Bladow. “We offer new home construction, major remodels, and design work all over the lakes area.”

Marilyn - homeowner

Hilltop Lumber in Ottertail, another family-owned business, supplied all the building materials. Founded in Glenwood, Minn. in 1988, it now has four locations – Glenwood, Ottertail, Alexandria, and Park Rapids – offering building supplies for both residential and commercial projects.

A self-proclaimed Pinterest browser, Marilyn enjoys spending time on the Internet to get home building and decorating ideas from a number of sources. Before they even chose their builder, she found a floor plan they both liked on Architectural Designs, a family-owned online business that offers a wide range of house plans for homeowners. “We purchased the plans from them, and then, with Rick Bladow’s drafting experience, we tweaked it a little bit, working with

him to finalize that design to meet our specific needs,” she says. “I think Bladow Construction was building three houses at the same time, but both Rick and his daughter Tiffany worked hard to make it happen for us within our time frame. Rick was here at the site a lot, and Tiffany does all the finishing work herself.”

Exterior

With white siding and gray trim, this home has an American farmhouse look and feel to it from the outside. Dale says the original plan called for board & batten siding, which is typically made of wood.

“After discussing it with Matt Blashack at Hilltop Lumber, however, we decided to go with LP® Smartside® siding,” he says.

"It was great working with the Nelsons. They have a lot of experience, and that shows through."

Made from engineered wood that’s treated with a process to add strength, along with resistance to weather and decay, this siding and trim from LP® Building Solutions comes in a variety of options and styles.

“The Nelsons chose a white Diamond Coat Board & Batten, and they liked Evening Gray for the soffits and fascia,” says Blashack, who began working on the sales team at the Hilltop Lumber Ottertail location soon after it opened more than eight years ago. “Marilyn and Dale had already decided to go with Marvin Windows throughout the home, so they were happy to find out that instead of white window wraps, Marvin offered a Cadet Gray as one of the color options.”

Their original design plan called for a metal roof over each of the two porches, and the black/charcoal shingle roof they chose blended nicely with the charcoal color of the steel roofs.

“The backsplash tile in the kitchen was a fun project. The tile has a shimmery, wavy look to it, and it actually has three colors in it.”

“It was great working with the Nelsons,” he says. “They have a lot of experience, and that shows through. Although they knew what they wanted, they were very flexible and willing to listen to suggestions along the way.”

Marilyn’s choices also shine through in many ways, including the outdoor light fixtures –and a distinctive wooden screen door with pine tree cut-outs.

Interior

While the style of the home may look like American farmhouse from the outside, Marilyn says the inside has a more coastal-inspired aesthetic, including numerous nods to all different types and colors of fish.

“I knew I liked fish, but when we first got started, I wasn’t sure what kind of color scheme I wanted to go with on the inside,” she says. “Then I found a tile that I really liked for the wall in the laundry room, and I knew that was it.”

When Marilyn began working with River’s Edge Cabinetry in Perham, she showed that tile to them, and “we kind of figured it out together,” she says. “Greg Meyer, the cabinet maker, does very nice work, and everyone there was so helpful. We were very pleased with the outcome.”

The 8 x 8-inch cement tiles have a flower pattern with a couple different shades of blue. Those colors are used as accents throughout the home, especially in the kitchen.

As a division of Joe Foltz Construction & Interiors by Winkels, this husband-and-wife cabinetry business handles new construction and remodeling projects for both residential and commercial clients. Besides custom cabinets, they can also provide countertops, hardware, showers, fireplaces, appliances, and window treatments.

“The kitchen cabinets in this home are alder, and one of our custom stains from River’s Edge was used on all the lower cabinets,” according to Tasha Foltz, Owner/Designer.

For the upper cabinets, they chose a Benjamin Moore paint called White Dove, and the island accent blue color is Hale Navy.

“We also added metal accenting panels on some of the flip-up cabinet doors in the kitchen,” she adds. “They have a metal mesh panel on them that gives some of the upper cabinets a unique look.”

A Secret Door

A tall piece of built-in cabinetry is stained in the same custom color as the lower cabinets, and has those same metal accenting panels across the top. There is more than meets the eye, however, with these three large panels that appear to be stationary. One of the panels opens as a door that leads into a full walk-in pantry.

“Marilyn had seen a similar pantry entry when they were looking at homes, so she brought us an ‘inspiration picture’,” Foltz explains. “When customers bring us ideas, we like to be able to create something specifically for their situation, and to fit any particular space. This is a statement piece, but it’s also functional.”

Besides the obvious use for food and small appliance storage, Marilyn says the grandkids are also very pleased with the space, and think of it as a place to go into and to hide from everyone.

Not only did the Nelsons watch the home being built, and make all the individual choices, but they also installed some of the flooring, ceiling, and tile themselves.

“The backsplash tile in the kitchen was a fun project,” says Marilyn. “The tile has a shimmery, wavy look to it, and it actually has three colors in it.”

For the wood floors in the kitchen and dining area, Dale says they used a pine tongueand-groove, with a Driftwood stain.

“Marilyn loves the metal touches, and we both love a lot of wood,” he says. “We installed wood ceilings in a couple other places we owned, and for this house we added them in the kitchen and dining room.”

There are two bedrooms and a small family room on the second floor, with a large bath that has two sets of vanities for the grandchildren. There are also two primary bedroom suites on the main floor and a large open kitchen with two living areas.

“The front part facing the lake was supposed to be all screened porch, but we wanted more usage, so we opened that up,” says Dale.

That extra room allowed them to also add a second fireplace.

“One of the fireplaces has a semi-smooth cement face, but for the other one, we wanted a different type of look, one that makes it seem like it’s been there for ages,” Marilyn

explains. “We had found a photo on Hebron Brick’s online site, and it was perfect for us. We didn’t want it to LOOK perfect.”

Although the fireplaces are quite different, they tie the living areas together to help create that warm and cozy atmosphere that’s so important to the Nelsons.

“I like all the different conversation areas we have throughout the main floor,” Dale adds. “You can be in the kitchen, or sit at the dining area near the fireplace, or even in the other areas, and you can still see everyone, and talk to others. We like having a large social place where we can all gather.” L&H

his rustic and luxurious cut-logstyle lake cabin is an unforgettable escape for the homeowners, away from Sioux Falls in the picturesque wilderness of Lake Pickerel in Grenville, South Dakota. Step inside, and prepare to embark on a journey of warmth and relaxation unlike any other.

After going to Lake Okoboji in Iowa, for years, the homeowners decided they wanted to find a quieter lake–somewhere safe where they would feel comfortable raising their kids. When originally looking for a place to build their lake cabin, they went to visit some friends who had a place on Lake Pickerel. Many properties and a tiny restaurant adorn this 955-acre lake known for its spring-fed water and being one of the deepest natural lakes in South Dakota.

“We went and visited our friends and loved the feel of the lake and the quietness of it. There aren't 100 jet skis out on the lake. There are some weekends where there’s maybe only five or six other boats out on the lake, so I felt comfortable sending my kids out at a younger age, on the jet ski or in the boat,” said the homeowner.

Nor-Son began construction on the lake cabin in the summer of 2008 and the project took a year to finish. The next year, they submitted the cabin for an Excellence in Construction Award with the MN/ND Associated Builders & Contractors award program, where it won an Eagle Award–which is a top honor.

Behind The Inspiration

When the homeowners approached Nor-Son to build their home, Nor-Son hadn’t ever worked on a project in South Dakota before that time. “It was fun and interesting to work with a client that wasn’t in Northern Minnesota because it’s a very different type of atmosphere in South Dakota. One of the reasons I was assigned to the project is because my family personally has a cabin about 20-30 miles away from where this job site was.

I was familiar with the area,” said Amy Dirkes who was the Project Architect with Nor-Son on this build.

Even before the cabin had been built, the homeowner started an idea book where she pulled pictures and sheets out of magazines and books that inspired her. Anything she found and loved she cut out and put into that book. She commented, “It was back in the day, when you still looked at magazines and books for your inspiration. Every time I found a magazine picture I liked, I added it to my collection,” she said.

The Rustic Home by Ralph Kylloe was also a huge inspiration to her as she and her husband went through dreaming up and designing this lake cabin.

After putting together her idea book that was filled with the soul of their dream lake cabin, she sat down with their architect, Amy Dirkes. “I showed her everything I liked, and she did a great job of incorporating those ideas and then some. She did a phenomenal job,” the homeowner said. “I don’t feel like it took us too terribly long to make a plan that we really liked.”

Design Mastery

Nor-Son conducted several meetings with the homeowners and also went to Sioux Falls a few times to meet with them and talk about their goals for building the house. Nor-Son also took them through past clients’ cabins that they’d built in Minnesota. When the homeowners bought the property, they had Nor-Son build a guest home up against the bay area before building the main house. The properties are across the road from each other. “A road goes through to the dead end at the end of the point. Their property is almost to the end of the point,

so the main house was on the south-facing property and the guest home faced a bay on the north side of the lake. The guest house was kind of a trial run for them to work with us and to make sure they were happy with the process and working with our team. They were happy with us! We eventually designed and built their main home,” said Dirkes.

Nor-Son was excited about designing and building this lake cabin for the homeowners since the rustic log home wasn’t really what people were seeing on the lakes in South Dakota at that time. “The cabins were usually more ‘mom and pop’, smaller cabins that were more traditional looking, not so much of the rustic, so it was really fun to introduce that style of home. Because after we built

that home, there were others popping up around the lake, taking inspiration from the one that we created,” said Dirkes.

When it came to all the little things, the homeowners knew exactly what they wanted even when it came down to smallest details like noises that one usually hears in their home. “I told them I didn’t want to hear any noises in the house. I didn’t want to hear water running down the wall when someone flushed the toilet. I didn’t want to yell from upstairs and have someone downstairs hear me,” said the homeowner. To help cut the noise, a sound-deadening board was installed in the great room since the vaulted ceilings were close to the children’s bedrooms.

“They weren’t scared of trying new things. We were able to push the envelope in some of the design details.”

The design team had brilliant attention to detail and left no stone unturned in their journey to creating a noise-free sanctuary–resulting in a truly exceptional retreat that the homeowners have been enjoying for many years.

“Honestly, working with that client was a lot of fun. They were very involved from start to finish. They weren’t scared of trying new things. They took more inspiration from those Montana-style mountain lodge homes, which isn’t typical of what you see in South Dakota. We were able to push the envelope in some of the design details,” said Dirkes.

The Details: Wood, Metals, and Stonework

One of the defining features in this lake home is the juxtaposition of cut logs and exposed wooden beams mixed with a lot of stonework, bringing the rustic warmth inside; this creates a beautiful aesthetic. “The homeowners were interested in doing something different and fun and they didn’t want to have a place that was like everyone else's. That really makes it a great project, because you can introduce some things that other clients don’t have interest in doing. They were a fun couple to work with. Their kids were young when we started the project, so we kind of watched their kids grow up,” said Dirkes.

The Wood

The wood throughout the cabin is one of the distinguishing factors in this log cabin. The floors were built with reclaimed oak wood, and then it was intentionally distressed to have a rough texture. The homeowner talked about how she didn’t care if her kids ran through the house with wet feet because that floor wasn’t going to be damaged.

This cabin has so many areas with detailed woodwork, which brought the warmth of nature indoors. There were seven different stain colors that were placed on the wood throughout the cabin–this allowed them to get consistent warm shades. They also used a custom paint finish and a hand-rolled finish to create a rustic appearance in the lake cabin. These were applied in several areas, such as the kitchen island and the cabinets.

The meticulous attention to detail extends even to the smaller elements, such as the knotty wood used for the door frames and staircase rail, showcasing the commitment to fulfilling the homeowner's desires. NorSon ensured that the twigs, logs, and wood remained as natural as possible, preserving the rustic charm envisioned by the homeowner.

Inside the cabin, all of the log work, as well as the white cedar and pine, originated from Minnesota. Natural elements like the wood and stone were hand-picked for their rustic allure.

Going beyond traditional approaches, the team ingeniously designed a captivating twisted twig railing that gracefully leads to the second level of the lake cabin. Crafting this unique masterpiece proved to be both thrilling and challenging, since they had to construct it onsite to accommodate the complexity of the slope. “There’s so much character in that wood,” said the homeowner.

They also crafted a custom ladder using the logs and twigs for the boys' bedroom. It helped the kids and their friends get to and from the bunks in that room.

Rust + Metal Details

The attention to detail for both design and execution is clear when you look at things like the unique cabinet fronts in the kitchen. They have a stainless woven mesh that was set into the fronts of the cabinets and then they were rusted on purpose. The rusting process was achieved by dipping each piece into a saltwater solution. When they reached the desired color of rust, they were sealed. Another detail that really adds to the rustic aesthetic is the steel-range hood. “The range hood over the kitchen range is all custom metal, even down to the last little rivet. That was meticulously discussed and reviewed with the homeowners to make sure we were capturing the right vision that they wanted,” said Dirkes.

The Stonework

Exquisite stonework is a huge part of the design, reaching throughout the lake cabin. All of the stones used in the house were hand-selected by the homeowners and design team. The stones came from an Oklahoma stone quarry.

“The fireplace in the main level is all solid big boulders, big rocks. The fireplace is rock, and it creates that feeling that it’s always been there, like the house was built around it,” said Dirkes. The fireplace stones were skillfully cut and pieced together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Impressively, some cornerstones of the fireplace weighed a staggering 2 ½ tons, making their placement a challenging task. To ensure the team's safety and prevent back injuries, they employed a creative approach where they cleverly used 2-inch wide pipes to roll the massive stones across the floor and into their designated positions with precision and caution.

A Few Other Details the Homeowner Loved

There are two rooms where the homeowner’s daughters sleep, and these rooms share a bathroom. “One has a king and a single. The other one has a queen with a single. I tried putting in as many beds as possible so when my kids had friends over, there would be plenty of places to sleep,” the homeowner said. The boys' room has a queen-size bed and four twin-sized bunks built into the walls.

The designer and owner of Interiors Etc., Mary Kelly, took some old doors and refurbished them before cutting the ends off. She then put a mirror inside the panel of the door and finished it off by painting it. It was placed in the girls’ shared bathroom.

Another feature the homeowners love is their screened porch, which faces the lake. One can only imagine the fun nights they have, filled with laughter and great conversation. “We have a great big table in the screened porch so we can fit all our kids and friends in there for dinner. We eat all of our meals out there. I said no TV on the porch so it invites game playing, reading and relaxing, and talking,” said the homeowner.

Interior Design: The Furniture + Lighting

The homeowner and the interior designer, Mary Kelly, embarked on a collaborative and transformative journey to make the interior design reflect the homeowner’s vision, lifestyle preferences, and preferred aesthetic. When talking about working with the interior designer, the homeowner was so thankful and appreciative of all her hard work and that she walked through the process with her. “She went everywhere with me; she came up to Minneapolis and helped me pick out all the lighting. “We have a lot of unique lighting. Our big chandelier is like a waxed candle, so it drips if it’s on for too long,” the homeowner said. “We went to the International Market Square and then we also took a trip to Chicago and I actually found 90% of my stuff that I put in the cabin in Chicago.”

The homeowners enjoy escaping the city or to the lake cabin any chance they can during the warmer months. The homeowner’s father-in-law was out at the lake cabin and had asked her, “Okay, now that you've lived here this long, is there anything you would have changed?” She told him the only thing she would change is to make the laundry room bigger, which is pretty good if that’s the only thing you’d want to alter after so many years. “We put in a laundry chute, which I love, so it's easy for the upstairs people to throw their items downstairs,” said the homeowner.

The cabin at Lake Pickerel is the epitome of relaxation–a lakefront getaway. Its fusion of rustic charm and modern amenities creates a sanctuary where the homeowners can unwind and reconnect after a busy week. “The whole house is unique and very us. It really speaks to our vibe and way of life. We play a ton of games, such as ladder golf, and I’m always looking for the newest and greatest yard games. We do a lot of cards, Cribbage, Rummy, and all kinds of games,” said the homeowner.
