Newslet ter Study on the impact of MTHFD1 gen in plant genome is published by Nature Communications

Three years ago, Martin Groth of Steve Jacobsen’s

With this study we are discovering research group in UCLA was looking to characterize folates ways in which folates impact the in the plant model, Arabidopsis. This step was essential for cells of organisms their project on plant epigenetics. Epigenetics studies the

heritable structural changes to the DNA of an organism in response to the environment. These changes do not alter the DNA sequence; however, they have a great impact on the regulation of genes in organisms. There are few laboratories in the world that can perform detailed folate analysis. Biotechnology-FEMSA Center is one of them. Rocio Diaz, expert on folate metabolism along with Carolina Garcia and Perla Ramos designed, performed, and interpreted experiments with mutant plants. Nature Communications published “MTHFD1 controls DNA methylation in Arabidopsis.” In the paper it is discussed how defects in folate metabolism can lower the methylation of Arabidopsis DNA affecting negatively the plant. The Rocio Diaz de la Garza, Carolina Garcia Salinas and Perla Ramos Parra in Biotechnology-FEMSA Center importance of the study relays on the fact that for the first laboratories. The researchers collaborated in an time it was possible to correlate a defect on a gene of folate epigenetic study of plants along with the University of metabolism to DNA methylation problems in an organism, California in Los Angeles. this could happen to other organisms, even humans. Students Enjoy Summer Course with Professors From German Universities

Rafael Batres, Professor-Researcher of the School of Engineering and Sciences coordinated the “Process Systems Engineering Summer School 2016.” This event was held at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Cuernavaca Campus. Professors from RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, and TU Dortmund offered lectures. The students had the opportunity to learn from them during the three-week course. "The Summer School's purpose was to expand the participants knowledge. In particular in global optimization, model-based design of experiments, modeling and optimization of physicochemical and biological process, and advance control" said Batres. The Students from 16 universities participated in “Process Systems Engineering Summer School 2016” at importance of mathematical modeling and strategies was Cuernavaca Campus. also highlighted due to their use in solving optimization problems. Students from all over the country and from 16 different universities assisted to the event.

EIC Professor is Keynote Speaker at International Conference

The 2nd International Conference on Food and Beverage Packaging 2016 was held in Rome. Researchers from all over the world participated in the conference on June 13th and 14th. The assistants enjoyed more than 30 conferences, workshops, panels, and poster presentations. Professor Cecilia Rojas de Gante was invited to give the keynote speech on the event's second day. "In Italy I had the opportunity to lecture a conference based on my research. My conference was ‘Development of biodegradable films based on blue corn flour with potential applications in food packaging’” said Rojas. The researcher is part of the Emerging Technologies and Molecular Nutrition research group. She works with cereal flours as raw materials for obtaining thermoplastics. "The blue corn flour is obtained according to an specific methodology" she concluded. More information: goo.gl/gfOKjI

CIMA is the Venue of “Innovation & Industry 2016. Motivating without limits” event The two-day event held conferences from leaders of national and international companies. The conferences focused on innovation case studies: Bimbo, Macimex, General Motors in Mexico, Volvo, BMW, Nissan, Sypris, and RAMCO. The stand area and the event was ideal for networking between assistants. As part of the program, company representatives took a tour in the Research Center of Automotive Mechatronics (CIMA) in Toluca Campus. The last day of the event simultaneous workshops were held. "This event is part of the actions of the Committee of Innovation and Technological Development of CLAUT EdoMex. Which aims to This event was organized by the Automotive Cluster promote innovation in the automotive industry and in of Estado de México and the Research Center of Estado de México. Academic institutions and research Automotive Mechatronics centers are collaboration to develop the industry" said Alejandro Rojo, CIMA director and event organizer. More information: goo.gl/rNXOKB
